100 Campaigns that Changed the World

In this pilot episode recorded last year I talk to David Hillman, who cut his campaigning teeth on the anti-Apartheid campaign before going on to work on the hugely successful effort to ban landmines and drop developing country debt. He is currently director of Stamp Out Poverty, working for a number of years on new sources of finance for development and leading UK campaigning for a Financial Transaction Tax. In 2010 he also helped create the Robin Hood Tax campaign, a network of more than 100 UK charities, trade unions, faith organisations and green groups pressing for a tax on financial transaction. With the facts about the Sanders Single Payer Healthcare Plan. Bernie spells out the details and it is clear that it is doable, affordable and probably one of the most important changes this country could ever benefit from. Oh, and no one is talking about one of the revenue raising components of the Sanders plan. It's called the Inclusive Prosperity Act ( H.R. 1464) aka Robin Hood Tax. Check it out at robinhoodtax.org

What would you do with $300 billion? Heal the sick, feed the poor? Well there is a bill being reintroduced in Congress that establishes a 'tiny' transaction tax on Wall Street Trades (mostly high frequency trades) that can raise---you guessed it---$300 billion annually for U.S. budget. Nurses say yes--to The Inclusive Prosperity Act!

Ken Zinn, the D.C. based Political Director for National Nurses United, talks with us about the announcement from the European Nations that 11 countries have signed on to a “financial transaction” tax, aka the Robin Hood Tax. The Robin Hood tax will raise billions of dollars by taxing financial transactions by incurring a less than half a percent tax on Wall Street transactions. Nurses in the U.S. have been on the leading edge of this concept and are making some headway here at home. Keep an open mind. We always joke about our nurses at National Nurses United and how busy they are. Even though we do like to have fun with that, its true! RN and Co-President of National Nurses United, Jean Ross will be with us to talk about H.R. 6411, the Inclusive Prosperity Act (aka the Robin Hood Tax). I swear these people never sleep—but that would be wrong because they are nurses and they know the value of a good night’s rest. That said, this week we find over a thousand of our friends, aka the “Sea of Red Scrubs,” on Capitol Hill this week at a rally to support Minnesota Congressman Keith Ellison as he reintroduces the Inclusive Prosperity Act. You’ve heard us beating this drum for at least 18 months…The Robin Hood Tax makes so much sense it is hard to argue against it. But game on, as there are corporate interests (i.e. Read more...

The global battle against AIDS needs a ‘Robin Hood Tax’ to raise finance: rich countries need to shoulder the cost of fighting the pandemic in poor countries — as well as at home — in the interests of the whole planet. That’s according to Alvaro Bermejo, Executive Director of the International AIDS Alliance, who talked with Sarah Maxwell about his ideas during a symposium held at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine on World AIDS Day.
