Democracy works best when everyone can participate—and that starts with making sure every eligible voter can cast a ballot. At this BigTentUSA TentTalk held on June 9, VoteRiders' Sylvester Johnson III joined activist and organizer Jess Craven for a practical conversation about one of the biggest barriers to voting: voter ID requirements. Johnson explained that more than 34 million voting-age Americans lack a current government-issued ID, while 38 states require identification to vote. He outlined how VoteRiders helps voters navigate often confusing state rules, obtain supporting documents such as birth certificates, secure transportation to ID offices, and successfully complete the process from start to finish. The discussion also explored broader threats to voter participation, strategies for increasing turnout, and the importance of grassroots engagement. Attendees learned how simple actions—letter writing, texting, sharing information, and helping neighbors prepare to vote—can make a measurable difference. The takeaway was clear: Whether you live in a battleground state or not, there are concrete ways to help ensure every eligible voter can make their voice heard.Learn more about VoteRiders:https://voteriders.org/ Check out Jessica's newsletter “Chop Wood, Carry Water”:https://chopwoodcarrywaterdailyactions.substack.com/ABOUT THE SPEAKERS:Sylvester Johnson III serves as the Voter Outreach & Data Manager for VoteRiders. A little bit strange... President Trump did NOT hit the road today. Presidents typically hopscotch the country selling the new proposals from their State of the Union speeches. But President Trump has given that task to JD Vance. Joining us live... ABC News Deputy Political Director Ben Siegel joins us live. I watched the speech. There weren't that many proposals to sell...

Confusion persists today over who's in charge in Venezuela... now that Nicolas Maduro is in U-S custody. Let's bring in ABC News Deputy Political Director Ben Siegel.
We welcome Sam Rosenthal, political director of Roots Action, to analyze their “Autopsy” report on why in 2024 the Democratic Party lost to the worst, most corrupt GOP in American history. Plus, Ralph answers some of your listener questions.Sam Rosenthal is an organizer and researcher who serves as Political Director at RootsAction. We're talking about young voters, voters of color in major urban centers and college towns who looked at their choices last year (2024), looked at the candidates in the way the Democratic Party had conducted business and said, “I don't really see anyone here who's representing my best interests.” So it's not that these folks necessarily went and voted for Donald Trump (although some did) or voted third party (although some did). But by and large, people just didn't come out and vote. They were not inspired. They were not galvanized. And they didn't see how it would benefit their material interests to come out and support the Democratic Party as they had in 2020. So that's the ballgame, basically. It's incredibly hard to come back from a nearly 7 million vote drop from Presidential cycle to Presidential cycle. And everything else that we point to in this report, I think, is a bit secondary to that top line.Sam RosenthalOne of the reasons we wanted to write this report is because we haven't seen a similar type of reflection from the DNC, from anyone inside the Democratic Party apparatus. There's reporting that there's some kind of autopsy underway inside the DNC. But the subsequent reporting was that there was so much infighting about who's looking bad, which sect of consultant-types looks bad in that report and which comes out on top that it became too rancorous. It's not clear that they're going to release that report. We think this is complete political malpractice. If you can't have an assessment by the party of what went wrong, they are doomed to run a similar campaign in 2028.Sam Rosenthal Get full access to Ralph Nader Radio Hour at www.ralphnaderradiohour.com/subscribe

Listen, we heard Trump today at the U.N. talking crazy, but also saying Ukraine can get its territories back, and then some. As in, occupy Russia? We'll get into all that in this week's bonus show out later this week for our Patreon members. We'll also break down the crime cabal of Epstein, Trump, and Russia. More soon. For now, Happy New Year! 5786, to be precise. As Jewish families dip apples in honey and blow the shofar, we'd all do well to take inspiration: resilience is the tradition. Which is good, because democracy needs that same resilience right now. Fox News will tell you New York is a crime-hive communist brothel, while Donald Trump–the convicted felon, enthusiastic coup-plotter, and Orban fanboy–cheers on Christian nationalism like it's a Russian gift basket of underage girls. Thanks to Trump, RFK Jr.–a human centipede of conspiracies–used our tax dollars to declare war on Tylenol. MAGA and their Christian nationalist Charlie Kirk tent revival want to drag us back to an idealized 1950s where everyone smoked indoors for their health and also had polio. With MAGA using Charlie Kirk's laser light show memorial to fire up their base, we must and can fight back. That all-important work is in the states. Look to Virginia: a bellwether of the 2026 midterms. This week's guest, Shawn Werner, Organizing and Political Director of Sister District, joins Gaslit Nation to explain why the 2026 midterms start now. But will we even have elections? Here's some hope: groups like Sister District and the Democracy Security Project are training volunteers, protecting elections, and building the infrastructure we need to out-organize the new Jim Crow. Races to watch on election night, for any indication of a blue and angry red MAGA-regrets wave, include Kimberly Pope Adams in House District 82, Lily Franklin at Virginia Tech in District 41, and Leslie Mehta's campaign for the House of Delegates. Win them, and we prove momentum is on our side–and we lay the groundwork to build a victory engine to overcome Trump's desperate shenanigans in 2026. Consider this episode your official invitation to Gaslit Nation's Halloween Party with Sister District on Wednesday, October 22nd, from 6 to 8 p.m. ET. We'll be dressed up in costumes like our lives depend on it and phonebanking for Virginia. Because democracy cannot defend itself. Fight back now, because fighting back in the MAGA Gulag will be infinitely harder. For more on how to join forces with Sister District in these precious days and weeks ahead, and plant seeds of hope wherever you live, check out SisterDistrict.com. And again, don't miss this week's bonus show on Epstein, Trump, and Russia. Look out for that soon. We speak with Chuck Zlatkin, a longtime postal worker who is currently the Legislative and Political Director for New York Metro Area Postal Union, the local affiliate of the American Postal Workers Union. The U.S. postal service is older than country itself and provides universal service to every address in the country. While people may not write as many letters as they used to, the Postal Service remains essential to small and large businesses, to elderly who receive their prescriptions by mail, to voters who vote by mail and many others.
