Dawn O'Porter is the writer and broadcaster with the sharp bob, vintage clothes and brilliantly witty turn of phrase. We've met lots of times over the years and she's always the best company. She's married to comedian Chris O' Dowd who she met in LA, fifteen years ago. Since then they've shuttled between America and the UK, bringing up their two boys Art and Valentine. She told me how having babies has made her more productive - getting more writing done and having more ideas. And so it seems... Dawn has multiple projects underway: her new book Cat Lady has just been published; she has a new clothes collection out with @joanieclothing, and when we spoke, she'd recently helped put on Flackstock festival in memory of her great friend Caroline Flack who took her own life in 2020. Because her sons were so little at the time that Caroline died, just before the pandemic, Dawn explained she cried in cupboards for months so they wouldn't see her upset. She also talked about losing her mum, aged seven, and how that hit her recently when her own little boy turned seven.Dawn and I had a brilliant conversation where we moaned about some stuff, laughed about others and both concluded it's good to acknowledge all the good things in life.. and it's good to wear fabulous secondhand clothes no matter what you're up to - even if it's just the school run. Want to know what goes into making a top branded podcast? "If you can continually deliver on that stuff without hitting them with a hard sell, you have an audience. And that's different than a customer, right? But with time, you can evolve some of that audience into customers, and it's getting easier and easier to tell the ROI" Chris O'Keeffe is an Executive Producer with JAR Audio, a full-service branded podcast agency. Chris has over 7 years of experience in the audio industry, and has worked on a variety of projects, from audio dramas to branded podcasts. This is Chris' story... I'm Chris O'Keeffe from JAR Audio, and today I'm here to talk about branded podcasting. Branded content differs from a hard sell in that it's all about storytelling and building relationships over the long term. This medium is still new, so there are a lot of skills that are transferable from other industries. For example, at JAR Audio, we work with brands to create custom branded podcasts. We start with strategy and then move on to creation, production, marketing, and reporting. It's important to have a robust mix of marketing approaches, but storytelling is something completely different. If you can entertain or educate without asking for anything in return, you have an audience. And with time, you can evolve some of that audience into customers. In this episode, you will learn the following: 1. What goes into making a top branded podcast, including market research, production and content strategy? 2. How can audio storytelling be used to build relationships and achieve marketing goals? 3. What are some examples of branded podcasts that have been particularly successful? Resources: Learn more about Podbean's Enterprise and Business solutions that are trusted by industry leaders world wide, read case studies and more. Subscribe to our email newsletter to get industry updates: https://www.podbean.com/email-subscribe Chapter Summaries: [00:00:01] - Podbean's Podcasting smarter is the official podcast from Podbean. Today's episode features an interview with Chris O'Keeffe from JAR Audio. JAR Audio creates branded podcasts for brands such as Lush, Royal Bank of Canada, Lululemon, and more. [00:01:04] - JAR Audio is a full service branded podcast agency that works with brands to build custom branded podcasts. It's a traditional agency model. Except instead of making creative campaigns or websites or commercials, jar Audio makes podcasts amazing. The company has a full marketing team that launches the podcast and promotes it and reports on it. [00:02:27] - Chris explains how he got into the podcasting industry. He is a writer and his writing partner wanted to create an audio drama in 2018. They invited industry people from Vox, Ringer and Gimlet to spend a weekend with them to create it. He helped launch and develop a show called "Disgraceland". [00:05:36] - In addition to building a career in podcasting, Chris also worked in content strategy and content marketing. He believes in value-driven content, going for telling, not selling, building relationships over the long term. He thinks the battle is being the sort of battle for understanding the value of audio storytelling. [00:09:33] - JAR Audio has worked with big brands such as Expedia, Amazon, T Mobile, Lush, Amex, British Columbia Institute of Technology and the Port of Vancouver. For RBC, they have a show called Disruptors, which has been a runaway hit. T-Mobile built trust with its audience by informing them about its products and services. T-Mobile works with a lot of journalists and takes a journalistic lens to its content marketing. It's important to have the brand strategy and the comms goals and the strategic goals overlaid with that and in tension with that. [00:17:53] - Branded podcasts can be either a panel discussion or a one-on-one interview with a host, or a hybrid format like a Radiolab with more rich sound design and a scripted section. "The Message" from GE is a great example of a branded podcast. Brand podcasting is achievable for brands as the cost is lower than television production. Hosted ads are getting more traction than ads that are read externally because people trust the host. It's an exciting time for brands to be able to tell stories specifically of their brand in an entertaining way and share their brand values. Branded content is changing quickly and it's exciting for the industry. [00:24:35] - In the podcasting landscape, how can companies differentiate their brand story? There is a lot of content out there that's branded podcasts or podcasts that are sponsored. It doesn't have to be JAR audio but you should find a partner in the industry. You can't create a show in a vacuum. [00:26:32] - The discovery phase of a podcast is a combination of art and science. It's a number of foundational workshops, creative ideation planning, competitor analysis, data analysis and creative support. Branding is a big part of the discovery phase and it's important to manage expectations of success. [00:30:52] - Marketing is important in the development of a brand-driven podcast. It's important to focus on the product rather than the brand. When it comes to branding, podcast marketing is important to get the best ROI on every dollar you spend. The best way to grow a podcast audience is to create a unique brand. [00:32:44] - JAR is a full service branded agency. Chris believes in focusing on content first and building trust with the audience. He is a big product person and believes that the best way to market a product is to make a better product and work hard on your product. [00:35:11] - In terms of companies seeing return on investment, they are seeing it. [00:37:29] - The ROI story is different. For each show and for each industry, there's a suite of tools and metrics that help clearly tell that story. [00:38:36] - Chris wants to work with brands that are not scared to have a point of view on social issues and environmental issues. Patagonia is one of his favorite brands now because of the stands that they've made. Chris is excited for the future of branded storytelling. [00:42:46] - Chris recommends working with experts who understand the space and starting exploration. Now. Chris' email is email@example.com. If you want to talk directly about anything that they've spoken about today or disagree with him. [00:44:52] - Chris believes the podcasting industry is going to grow for at least the next half decade. The Oregon Public Defender System is broken. Due to a shortage of attorneys willing to take on the cases, hundreds of people wait for months without ever having an attorney appointed to their case. During this wait, they are often required to return to court to mandate another hearing because attorneys are not available to take the case. With each passing day, evidence grows harder to find, the memories of potential witnesses fade away, and whatever trust the accused had in the legal system withers and dies. To help Hunter understand how this crisis consumed Oregon Public Defense, he spoke with Chris O'Connor, a Public Defender at the Metropolitan Public Defender in Multnomah County Oregon. After 20 years as a Public Defender, Chris is the perfect guest to help understand the history and decisions leading up to the crisis. As he reveals, report after report over the years have continuously showcased the many failings of the overly complex, contract based public defender system. Yet despite the issues being obvious, the legislature and the judiciary continued to allow the issue to fester. Chris chats to Nathan Buckley, Peet Cooper, and Anthony Enright of Creature Cauldron about the design and development of their action rogue lite, Spirit Hunters: Infinite Horde Where is that shopkeeper when you need them? http://media.blubrry.com/caneandrinse/caneandrinse.com/sausage/TSF_Episode407.mp3 The Sausage Factory 407 was edited by Chris O'Regan The Sausage Factory is an interview-based podcast that lifts the lid on the makers of videogames. It examines the way in which games are made by asking the very people who create them, though the questions asked aren't just about game design, they also cover how developers made their start and what inspires them as creators. Split into two halves, the first segment delves into what makes the developers tick by asking about how they started, what and who inspires them and what games they are currently playing, whereas the second part of the show covers the game that they are currently working on and the thought processes behind its development. So, if you really want to hear about a game's gestation in full and frank detail then you have found the right podcast.
Sleepyhead recorded their forthcoming sixth album, New Alchemy, at the legendary Boston area recording studio Q Division with esteemed producer and Q Division co-founder Jon Lupfer at the helm. They are releasing the album August 19 as a digital download and via streaming platforms to be followed by a release on 12” vinyl LP. They plan to play as many shows as they can manage after that! New Alchemy features Sleepyhead founders, drummer/vocalist Rachael McNally and guitarist/vocalist Chris O'Rourke as well as bassist/vocalist/keyboardist Derek van Beever, who joined the trio in 2004, a few years after the other two had moved to Boston. Many of the songs conjure the subtly infectious laissez-faire sounds of pre-Grunge Indie Rock the embrace early on in their career with a handful evoking classic Laurel Canyon Country-Rock and other 70's FM staples. The title track to New Alchemy was inspired by the exploits of the New Alchemy Institute, a utopian endeavor founded by idealistic scientists in the 1970's in Falmouth, Massachusetts, the hometown of Sleepyhead guitarist/vocalist Chris O'Rourke. Sleepyhead was formed in a basement room at NYU's Brittany dorm in the fall of 1989 by drummer/vocalist Rachael McNally, bassist Mike Galinsky and guitarist/vocalist Chris O'Rourke. They released their first 7" single, the Kramer-produced "Play," in 1991 on Picture Book Artifact. Four full-length albums followed, on three different independent record labels. Punk Rock City USA was released by Slumberland Records in 1993, followed by Starduster (Homestead 1994), Communist Love Songs (Homestead 1996), and The Brighter Shore (Sealed Fate 1999). They toured the United States and Europe throughout the nineties, sharing the stage with such legendary bands as Polvo, Half Japanese, Yo La Tengo, The Grifters, The Dambuilders, Nation of Ulysses, Helium, Royal Trux, Antietam, Luna, Versus, The Magnetic Fields, and Dungbeetle. Around the time their fourth album was released in 1999, Rachael and Chris got married, and Mike Galinsky moved on to a successful career in filmmaking. Dan Cuddy (The Special Pillow, ex-Hypnolovewheel) joined Chris and Rachael on bass. With Dan on bass, Sleepyhead did some touring for The Brighter Shore and began writing new songs. Rachael and Chris moved from New York to Boston in 2002 after having their first child. They had another kid in 2005. By this time, they had begun recording a new album, with Dan on bass, with producer Mike Deming (Pernice Brothers, Apples in Stereo, Beachwood Sparks, Lilys), at Deming's famed Studio 45 in Hartford, and subsequently Enfield, CT. In 2004, bassist/vocalist/keyboardist Derek van Beever joined the band, and they started playing shows in Boston, Providence, and New York whenever they got the chance. In April 2013, this new lineup of Sleepyhead went into Q Division Studios in Somerville, MA to record the last three songs for their long-time-coming fifth album, Wild Sometimes, which was released on renowned Chicago indie Carrot Top Records on April 8, 2014. They played a bunch of shows in the Northeast, Midwest and Southeast to celebrate the release of Wild Sometimes in 2014, and then started writing a whole bunch of new songs with Derek. In the Spring of 2018, Drawing Room Records released a well-received deluxe double vinyl LP/digital reissue of Starduster and Communist Love Songs called Future Exhibit Goes Here. The Superhero Show Show #439The Umbrella Academy and Best Villain of the Year It's the finale of The Umbrella Academy, plus the award for Villain of the Year, and an interview with the Next Door Villain pod, on an all-new Superhero Show Show! On an all-new, all-different episode of The Superhero Show Show, Cassie and the Boyz are finally wrapping up their coverage of The Umbrella Academy's third season! With two Umbrellas down, and hanging out in the afterlife, it's up to the rest of the Umbrellas and Sparrows to make it out of the mystery hotel. Don't ring that bell! Also...maybe...don't trust that dad! Will the team be able to count on their dirty-butted father to save their lives and the world? Will Klaus and Luthor be able to make it back from the dead to help? And, with this being a show based on comic books, will there be a hallway fight or two? You know it! Before that, though, the Taste Buds keep the 2022 Shushies going with the Best Villain award! Resident Alien won the first Shushie of the year with Best Ensemble, but probably won't win this week, because that show doesn't really have villains. Next up is the Pull List, where we cover every TV show based on a comic book that came out this week, including reviews and discussions of the first two episodes of Harley Quinn, and the penultimate episode of Riverdale! Finally, Ryan sits down with Joe and Tiana of the Next Door Villain podcast to discuss their show, the state of the industry now, and the best villain performances of the year! As part of the Fab4ConJam online fan event, I convened these two Beatles insiders to take questions and reminisce. Chris O'Dell came from Tucson, AZ (yes! home of Jo Jo AND Linda) and was pulled into the Apple Press Office by Derek Taylor. She was a rooftop attendee as well as a one-time resident of Friar Park, witnessing the daily drama of the group as it ended, along with George and Pattie's marriage. She recalled her experiences in 2009's Miss O'Dell: My Hard Days and Long Nights with The Beatles, the Stones, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton and the Women They Loved. Nancy Lee Andrews was a model, actress and briefly, in the music biz as well as a photographer. More importantly, she was Ringo's romantic partner from 1974 through 1980, and likewise a witness to much of the inside relations between the former Beatles. (She also attended the Concert for Bangladesh as a guest of her then-boyfriend, bassist and future Domino, Carl Radle.) Nancy's book of spectacular photos was published as A Dose of Rock 'n' Roll in 2008. These women have maintained a close friendship since the 70s and it was our treat to hear them recall those days during this terrific conversation.
