The Greens ‘stunning' election defeat

Just before 4.30pm last Wednesday, Antony Green called it for the ABC: Greens leader Adam Bandt had lost his seat. Fifteen years after Bandt won the inner-urban seat of Melbourne from the ALP, Labor has taken it back – along with two of the Greens’ other three seats – leaving the party with just a single MP in the House of Representatives and without a leader. The wipeout came as a shock to the Greens, who had high hopes of increasing their number of representatives in parliament. But despite the shock result, this election sits alongside 2010 and 2022 as among the party’s largest ever share of votes. Today, national correspondent for The Saturday Paper, Mike Seccombe, on where it all went wrong, and what now for the Greens. The man in the image behind me is Australia's most dishonest politician.   I know this is a big statement, because Australian politics abounds with dishonesty, deception and bastardry.   We have a Federal Government which has routinely broken its election promises, including the ones about tax cuts and about taxation of superannuation, and they've been in power less than two years.   We have politicians on all sides of the political divide who habitually tell lies in Parliament and in front of the media, as the current Federal Government did on the issue of implementing the promised tax cuts.   They were still lying about that the week before they finally admitted they wouldn't be implementing the tax cuts as promised at the election and repeatedly since then.   They say we get the politicians we deserve and in Australia we certainly do, because we don't punish the politicians who lie to us.   But Adam Bandt, the Federal Leader of the Greens, is at another level of dishonesty.   He constantly and consistently misrepresents the housing industry and the people who participate in it, in the interests of achieving media profile and presenting himself as the saviour of those who rent.   He is, in fact, the opposite of their saviour. He's their nemesis. If his policies on the rental market were implemented, it would turn the current rental shortage crisis into a catastrophe, with vacancies even lower than the current average of just 1%, which is already an historically low figure.   But Bandt appears to believe his stance is a vote winner and he's happy to lie to achieve his goals.   Every time he speaks on this issue, he seeks to characterise the average investor as someone who owns 6 or 8 properties and wants more.   The official data from the ATO shows that less than 1% own more than five properties. 90% of those who own investment properties own 1 or 2, of which 72% own just one.    And they're mostly people on average incomes, trying to improve their financial situation. They are not, as the Greens leader claims, the wealthy elite of the nation with massive property portfolios, ripping off the taxation system.   Bandt also frequently blames investors for high property prices and poor affordability, without presenting any evidence to back up his sweeping statements – and ignoring the reality that investors comprise less than 30% of buyers and that most of the people out there competing for dwellings – and therefore pushing up property prices - are home buyers, including first-home buyers.   There has been a number of independent research studies recently on the major drivers of high property prices – and I emphasise that these are genuine research studies, not sweeping statements by attention-seeking minor politicians or people with a vested interest in the argument.   Reports by the NSW Productivity Commission and by think tank The Centre for Independent Studies have both independently concluded that the biggest reason prices and rents have risen is planning restrictions by politicians and bureaucrats, particularly those that prevent greater density of development in existing suburbs.   These reports argue that rising prices have not been caused by negative gearing or other investor influences, but by planning restrictions which have prevented a good supply of affordable new dwellings.   But the Greens happily ignore these inconvenient truths.   And if Bandt has his way, investors will be hounded out of existence, because property investment will be no longer viable if his policies were implemented.   And the issue that political parasites like Adam Bandt never address is this: if you squash property investors the way he and his cohorts want to, where are the rental properties coming from?   New data from Australia's best research analyst, Simon Pressley of Propertyology, confirms there are 3.5 million rental homes in Australia - and 3.2 million of them are provided by private investors.   That's 91.4% of rental homes supplied by everyday mum-and-dad investors. Only 300,000 rental homes are provided by government.   If you drum investors out of existence, as this idiot wants to do, there needs to be a plan for how you replace those three million homes provided by the investors that the Greens want to squash.   Presumably they expect state governments to step up and provide all the rental dwellings that the nation needs.   And the cost of providing 3.2 million rental homes – conservatively – is $1,300 billion.    Can anyone suggest a state or territory government in this country which has a few hundred billion dollars to spare to replace what is currently provided by mum-and-dad investors.   Mr Bandt – what's your policy for achieving this?   It's a rhetorical question – I know you don't have one. All you have is a burning and rather unsettling hatred for anyone who owns an investment property.

That was never going to happen but, possessing the major slice of the balance of power in the Senate, the Greens have considerable potential muscle – at least in theory. In this podcast, we get a glimpse of the gap between Greens leader Adam Bandt's aspiration for ambitious reforms and the reality that the government is only giving concessions at the edges to the minor party. “There's a capacity for this to be a golden era of reform in this parliament,” Bandt says. “For us to pass laws that tackle the climate crisis and to protect the environment. After more than a decade of inaction, the Australian House of Representatives finally passed federal climate legislation that aims to cut the nation's emissions by 43% from 2005 levels by 2030. But that target alone is far from enough to get Australia on track to meet its climate goals, according Australian Green party leader and Melbourne MP Adam Bandt. If Australia's May election proved anything on climate, its Australians are demanding greater action. And Bandt says the new parliament needs to ratchet up its ambition to do so. Bandt joins the show this week to discuss why he and the other Greens decided to support the recent bill, how they plan to improve the legislation, and why his party is prepared to battle the Labor Party on new fossil fuel infrastructure. We also discuss how Australia should plan to phase out fossil fuel exports, combat income inequality and inflation, and what the recent scandal with former Prime Minister Scott Morrison means for global democracy.  Subscribe to our Substack newsletter "The Climate Weekly": https://theclimateweekly.substack.com/ As always, follow us @climatepod on Twitter and email us at theclimatepod@gmail.com. Van Badham joins Ben Davison for a very special weekend wrap.  Our hosts got married yesterday!  In a small family ceremony at the beach where Van's father's ashes were put into Botany Bay, Van and Ben have tied the knot. But the news waits for no one. Albo's decision to reinstate paid pandemic leave payments for worker's who have to isolate shows the power of working people raising their voice together and the willingness of a Labor government to listen to workers.  The union movement (which you can join at australianunions.org.au/wow) worked hard to make sure the full social, economic and health impacts of forcing people into an economic choice around COVID were understood by the federal and state governments. As COVID continues it will be more important than ever that worker's voices are heard. On Insiders this morning Adam Bandt managed to reignite the mistakes of the climate wars by threatening to vote with the Dutton Liberals to block a legislated 43% reduction in emissions because it wasn't "ambitious" enough. Or if it didn't have a mechanism to stop ALL future coal and gas projects.  Or possibly because he wants the campaign issue.  Van and Ben breakdown why this is bad policy development and self indulgent politics. Plus the happy couple take a look at why Van's mum's local MP, Scott Morrison, is delivering a sermon on the other side of the country at the church of well known anti-equality activist Margaret Court.

Abstract: Brain structure is tightly coupled with brain functions, but it remains unclear how cognition is related to brain morphology, and what is consistent across neurodevelopment. In this work, we developed graph convolutional neural networks (gCNNs) to predict Fluid Intelligence (Gf) from shapes of cortical ribbons and subcortical structures. T1-weighted MRIs from two independent cohorts, the Human Connectome Project (HCP; age: 28.81 {+/-} 3.70) and the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study (ABCD; age: 9.93 {+/-} 0.62) were independently analyzed. Cortical and subcortical surfaces were extracted and modeled as surface meshes. Three gCNNs were trained and evaluated using six-fold nested cross-validation. Overall, combining cortical and subcortical surfaces yielded the best predictions on both HCP (R=0.454) and ABCD datasets (R=0.314), and outperformed the current literature. Across both datasets, the morphometry of the amygdala and hippocampus, along with temporal, parietal and cingulate cortex consistently drove the prediction of Gf, suggesting a novel reframing of the morphometry underlying Gf. Abstract: The complex relationship between the shape and function of the human brain remains elusive despite extensive studies of cortical folding over many decades. The analysis of cortical gyrification presents an opportunity to advance our knowledge about this relationship, and better understand the etiology of a variety of pathologies involving diverse degrees of cortical folding abnormalities. Surface-based approaches have been shown to be particularly efficient in their ability to accurately describe the folded sheet topology of the cortical ribbon. However, the utility of these approaches has been blunted by their reliance on manually defined features in order to capture all relevant geometric properties of cortical folding. In this paper, we propose a deep-learning based method to analyze cortical folding patterns in a data-driven way that alleviates this reliance on manual feature definition. This method builds on the emerging field of geometric deep-learning and uses convolutional neural network architecture adapted to the surface representation of the cortical ribbon. MRI data from 6,410 healthy subjects obtained from 11 publicly available data repositories were used to predict age and sex via brain shape analysis. Ages ranged from 6-89 years. Both inner and outer cortical surfaces were extracted using Freesurfer and then registered into MNI space. Two gCNNs were trained, the first of which to predict subject's self-identified sex, the second of which to predict subject's age. Class Activation Maps (CAM) and Regression Activation Maps (RAM) were constructed to map the topographic distribution of the most influential brain regions involved in the decision process for each gCNN. Using this approach, the gCNN was able to predict a subject's sex with an average accuracy of 87.99% and achieved a Person's coefficient of correlation of 0.93 with an average absolute error 4.58 years when predicting a subject's age. "Ultimately Labor's got to decide where it stands, and if Labor decides that it does want to go down the path of working with us on a plan to phase out coal and look after workers in communities, then great. "If Labor prefers to work with the Liberals, maybe we're going to see a situation like we do in Germany at the moment where there's a grand coalition between the equivalent of the Labor and Liberal parties because they find that they've got more in common with each other than with us." The Green Institute is an Australian non-profit organisation, their mission being to “support green politics through education, action, research and debate“. Green politics means broad community-wide change grounded in the principles of ecology, social justice, democracy, non-violence, sustainability and respect for diversity. With ecological breakdown underway, inequality spiralling, colonialism and patriarchy still not dismantled, and the hate-fuelled far right on the rise, we desperately need democracies which are able to both reverse these trends and create hope-filled resilience in the face of difficult times to come. Meanwhile, around the world, people and communities are experimenting with exciting and innovative democratic practices, recasting the relationship between citizens and government, drawing on ancient wisdom, involving deep engagement and participation. The Green Institute’s 2019 conference challenged us to think deeply about democracy, and inspires us to act fast, and with great determination, to cultivate democracy at every level.

It attacked Adam Bandt for admiring his hot wife but supported the disgraceful behaviour of Serena Williams. 3:08 https://www.facebook.com/Adam.Bandt.MP/photos/a.150546688313906/1860256624009562/?type=3&theater (His hot wife gets Adam Bandt into hot water) Here are some of the comments: Katred Stave – … https://www.ironfistvelvetglove.com.au/2018/09/episode-164-the-crazy-left-attacks-bandt-but-supports-serena/ (Read more ›) The post https://www.ironfistvelvetglove.com.au/2018/09/episode-164-the-crazy-left-attacks-bandt-but-supports-serena/ (Episode 164 – The crazy left attacks Bandt but supports Serena) appeared first on https://www.ironfistvelvetglove.com.au (The Iron Fist and the Velvet Glove). CARBON RATIONS OR CARBON ALLOWANCES?Mon 18th Dec 2017How would carbon rationing work?Would it be forever?Would it hurt?BZE’s Vivien Langford talks to author Stan Cox in Salina Kansas about his book “Anyway you slice it”.Some people  are aware of the Climate Emergency, but others behave as if unaware. Australia’s per capita aviation emissions for example  are 18 metric tonnes compares to 5 for a French Citizen. What if this generation put a cap on fossil fuelled travel and energy use? Would it feel better if it was an app on your phone and was called a Carbon Allowance? We say that the bulk of existing coal oil and gas must stay underground, so shouldn’t we treat these as precious commodities, to be rationed while we make the transition? A Government committee in the UK researched this and said it could become an essential measure but that it was” an idea before its time”. We look into why it is such a taboo subject.“How the world breaks” is a new book by Stan Cox and his son Paul. We talk to Paul Cox in Copenhagen about the anthropology of disaster response. He praises countries like Bangladesh as the Netherlands without a budget”. He wants us to stop talking bout “natural;” disasters as if there was nothing we could do to mitigate them. When Greens MP Adam Bandt called PM Tony Abbott a “climate criminal ” during a Blue Mountains bush fire, he was condemned as insensitive. But when is there a “right time to connect the  dots”? Paul talks about our bushfires and the floods and landslides that are testing resilience around the world. He says economists fear any restraint on growth more than they fear the worst that climate change can bring us.How to change the narrative?
