First Nations lawyer, academic and activist Noel Pearson has given the first of four lectures that will be broadcast by the ABC. In his first address, Pearson shared his fear that a proposed referendum on an Indigenous voice to parliament might fail. The exact words he used were "perish in the mud". Pretty evocative language, but Pearson wasn't finished there. He also said that if the referendum outcome was predicated on the popularity of indigenous Australians as a people, then it is doubtful it will succeed. He described the country's First Nations people as a much unloved group in our society. And said as a result, achieving recognition would be more difficult than it was to legalise same-sex marriage in Australia. And this goes back to the idea that Indigenous people are unloved by white Australia. Pearson said that Unlike same-sex marriage, there is not the requisite empathy of love for aboriginal people to break through the prejudice, contempt and violence, of the past. He said Australians have a closer connection to the LGBT community, but simply do not have Aboriginal people within their circles of family and friendship… You know what… he's absolutely right.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

WA's mystery Powerball jackpot winner — one of three in Australia to split the record $160m — is from a regional area, it has been revealed. Set to take home a cool $53m, the owner of the single ticket entry is not registered on the Lotterywest Player's Registration Service. Lotterywest say they are still waiting to hear from the division one winner. The other two winning tickets were sold in NSW and Victoria. While there will be lots of disappointed people still having to turn up to work on Friday, there are 24 other West Australian players thanking their lucky lotto, having won more than $77,000 in division two of Thursday night's draw. The division two winning tickets were sold at Michael's Health Care Chemist in Wembley, Northam Central Newsagency, Eaton Fair Lottery Kiosk and online.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
A large cruise liner with COVID-19 cases on board has missed a scheduled stop in Western Australia because of bad weather and is now heading to Fremantle. The Coral Princess has an undisclosed number of virus cases among passengers and crew, although the operator, Carnival Australia, says most of its 2000 guests are unaffected. The ship left Broome for Geraldton earlier this week, but bad weather forced it to bypass its scheduled stop there on Thursday and head straight to Fremantle. Carnival Australia said the change of schedule was on the advice of the Mid West Ports Authority.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
