My returning guest is Garth Humphreys, host and producer of Audio Pizza, Aussie Mac Zone and iBlindTech. Garth and I go deep and get technical - and of course we make it practical and relevant to your podcast production, too ;) Before Garth and I got rolling, I first explained how I recently rescued some bad sounding audio using various steps: Putting it through Auphonic first (noise reduction, low end filter, leveler), then processing the resulting Flac file in iZotope RX 6 (phase, de-reverb, and de-click), then more processing in Reaper including EQ'ing and de-essing. Then we discussed: Garth's new Yamaha HS7 6.5" Powered Studio Monitors Compression: Going through all the parameters, what they mean and how they work. LUFS: Understanding how it's calculated and what it’s measuring. FLAC file format: Benefits of using it for recording and archiving. Phase trick: A cool way to hear what a plugin is actually doing to your audio. It also works for checking impact of MP3 encoding. Then I told the entire story of my recent purchase of the Rode Broadcaster microphone, and why I returned it quickly. (Note: It's NOT because it's a bad mic) I also talked about the two Fabfilter plugins I bought recently: The Pro-DS (de-esser) and the Pro-MB (multiband compressor). Thanks for hanging out with me again Garth and sharing so many tasty slices of audio pizza! Note* I now use and recommend Zencastr instead of CAST. As you listen to previous sessions you'll hear me mention CAST from time to time but their service has gone downhill badly and Zencastr is now the best in that space, in my opinion. First, I reflect on this show - A Walk Down Memory Lane! Can you tell what is different this week? If you are watching the video playback you will see that we are not at the RAWtalk table. The reason being is I have been filming for the last 7 days the next video guide, the FroKnowsPhoto Guide to Video Editing. The crew would leave each night and all the gear would stay in place. The set was set along with the lights and Canon cameras so all we needed to do was turn the cameras on and shoot. Before I jump into telling you about the interview with Todd Wolfe this week I have to tell you we had some slight technical issues. It tuns out for whatever reason the ZOOM gave us a corrupt audio file from that interview. The strange thing is we filmed the interview first before filming the main intro with Stephen. Thankfully that audio was fine but I have to apologize for the camera audio that we used for Todds portion of the show. I guess the silver lining is that fact that you can hear how important quality sound is and why we use the RODE Broadcaster microphones. This weeks show was sponsored by AudioBlocks.com/go/fro and VideoBlocks.com/go/fro . We have been doing a lot of DSLR video coverage since so many people have been venturing into it. AudioBlocks and VideoBlocks are pretty much a must have for content creators and video editors. Todd, Stephen and I have been utilizing their service for the last few years and have recently work out a sponsorship agreement. If you are interested in checking out their service you can sign up for their 7 day trial which does require a credit card. Here is the trick, before the trial ends and they charge you full price for the service cancel it. They will send you an e mail offering it to you for only $99 a year opposed to $79 a month. Enjoy the show and sorry for the poor audio. Intro: 00:00:16 Photo News: 00:11:17 Todd Wolfe Interview / Editing Guide Discussion: 00:51:01 Gear of the Week: 01:16:01
We have made it to the 100th Episode of FroKnowsPhoto RAWtalk. What started as an idea to have a roundtable discussion each week has morphed a few times to get to where it stands today. When it started we did not record video, just audio. But something always told me that audio alone is not enough, we needed to add video. When I started to record video it was done with a static GoPro camera with the audio running into it. The quality was fine but nothing over the top. I wanted better audio, better video and a show that stood out above the other photography podcasts. The missing piece to the puzzle was Stephen Eckert. I knew Stephen had audio skills, so i asked him to help me out with recording each week. Right away he said I should add more camera angles and that he would edit them. Talk about grabbing the balls by the horns, he took initiative. Quickly we added Stephens Photo News where he started at the table then went back off to the side to run the audio. But more and more I would toss questions back his way and he ended up at the table the entire show. And now he is officially part of the show. What Stephen did was make himself indispensable to the show. He didn’t wait for me to give him anything, he simply showed that without him the show wouldn’t be as good. And that’s the reason he is now full time with me. Last but not least I have to thank all of you for sticking with the show. I know it must have been tough at the beginning while I discovered what the show could have been but your questions and support certainly helped. Now together we have something that is real, fun, enjoyable, informative and sometimes over the top. Thank You!!!! PS. I can not forget to thank RODE Microphones for their continued support of the show. We use the RODE Broadcaster microphones each and every week. Atomos, what can I say, they allow us to record our main angle continuously without having to reset the cameras every 20 minutes. We LOVE these little guys and know you will too if you record video. AllensCamera.com: Without your support from day one I would not have been able to get as far as I have. And finally everyone on the Wheel Of Fro for buying into how much fun this little game could be.
