We use frameworks and concepts to protect ourselves from the discomfort of not knowing, but these very concepts, when taken for granted, can prevent us from asking the kinds of questions that will set us free. In this episode, I'm joined by philosophy of mental health scholars, Cristiano Bacchi and Giacomo Piselli Fioroni, co-hosts of the podcast "In Front of the Mirror." Together, we dive into the critical intersection of philosophy and psychiatry, exploring why slowing down to question our fundamental assumptions about mental health is not just academic exercise, but is essential for creating more humane and effective approaches. Cristiano, whose research examines authenticity and agency in mental health experiences, and Giacomo, who investigates the complex interplay between mind, world, and intersubjectivity, bring their interdisciplinary backgrounds to a conversation that challenges the dominant paradigms while remaining unafraid to tackle the big questions.Cristiano Bacchi is a Master's student in Clinical Psychology at the School of Psychology, University of Padua, Italy. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Philosophy and Psychological Sciences and Techniques from the University of Perugia, Italy, and a Master of Arts in Philosophy and Cognitive Sciences from the Berlin School of Mind and Brain, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. This background allowed him to become familiar with interdisciplinary approaches to the study of the mind and the person. To put this perspective into practice, during his undergraduate studies he trained as an intern in Amniotic Therapy, a body-based group therapy for persons experiencing psychosis. His current research addresses key questions in the philosophy of mental health, including issues of authenticity and ambiguity in psychiatry, the impact of mental health narratives on the person's sense of agency, and the role of language and metaphors in representing mental health conditions.Giacomo Piselli Fioroni is finishing his masters at the "Berlin School of Mind and Brain", Humboldt Universität zu Berlin. In his bachelor, he studied "Philosophy and Psychological sciences and techniques" at the University of Perugia, Italy. Currently, he is looking for a doctorate program, striving for realising his dream of becoming a researcher. His current work aims at putting into communication philosophy and mental health-related disciplines. Particularly, his current work focuses on the role of folk psychology both in the theories and practice of clinical sciences, and on the relationship of first-person, second-person and third-person perspectives employed to describe and understand mental health phenomena.Together, in 2024 they organized and taught the Projekttutorium Philosophy of Mental Health at Humboldt University.Since May 2025, they have hosted the podcast In Front of the Mirror, where they continue to explore the dialogue between philosophy and mental health. Distraction kills our purpose. It keeps us from focusing on what we truly want by throwing our attention to other things. Social media offers a new type of distraction for humanity and we are experiencing the repercussions. So how do we know if our own social media habits are hurting us? How do we assess we need a break? And then how do we actually take one? Our guest on the podcast this week, Allie Smith, gives us true and firm words about how social media use can impact quality of life. She also offers some ways to take a break, or "fast", or simply to turn down the volume of the virtual noise. It takes some humility and discernment to look at our own use and how it may be distracting us to a point of trouble. If you log on to a social media account on a regular basis, this is a great listen. If you have young people in your life that you are trying to guide through the murky waters of social media, listen. Full of practical tips, you won't want to miss this episode. Drawing on the story of David and Goliath, Sheldon Oakes shares how faithful stewardship of the small things entrusted, and incredible discipline had much more to do with God's preparation of His chosen King in SECRET than we often give credit and recognition for. When reflecting on the young anointed one and his destined battle with the giant, we sometimes fall into the erroneous thinking that David's preparation was an instantaneous deposit of faith and display of miraculous power, when in reality this climactic fight between David and Goliath only served to reveal what God had formed in the young man over the course of years of faithfulness. What a revelation and exhortation! Faithfulness and anointing begins NOW, not Infront of the masses, but in the secret place with God.

Is "biblical" always what it seems? In this thought-provoking episode, the hosts unpack why the word "biblical" might not mean what you think and explore its misuse across faith, politics, and cultural issues. From examining how "biblical" has become a branding tool to discussing its role in sociological stress tests and power dynamics, this conversation challenges us to rethink how we approach scripture and the teachings of Jesus. The discussion delves into the complexity of interpreting the Bible, emphasizing the need to consider the text itself, the cultural context behind the text, and our own assumptions in front of the text. With deep humility and intellectual curiosity, the hosts highlight how faithful readings of scripture require dialogue, critical thinking, and a willingness to hold tension between differing perspectives. How does the Bible shape the church's role in society? What does it mean to navigate cultural challenges with cruciformity and justice in mind? Join the conversation as these questions and more are explored with nuance and authenticity. One afternoon in Oslo changed the course of jazz piano history! In this episode, Adam and Peter dive into Facing You, the hit 1971 ECM release where a 26-year-old Keith Jarrett – torn between Miles Davis' electric band and his own acoustic instincts – walked alone into a studio and recorded eight completely improvised masterpieces. From the gospel-tinged “In Front” to the apex moment in “Lalene,” we explore his remarkable touch, bluesy intuition, and the distinctive distorted Steinway that producer Manfred Eicher perfectly captured. We place this album among solo piano giants (Monk, Tatum, Evans), lovingly examine Jarrett's “fussy” reputation, and show how this afternoon session laid the blueprint for his legendary Köln Concert. Five decades later, we jazz pianists are still chasing the magic Keith created that day.
Today on The Natural Birth Podcast we have Sonia. Sonia is a mom to three and currently resides in North Carolina. At just 22 years old, after meeting the love of her life, she became a mother to her two adoptive kids (now teenagers!) After a long journey to conceiving their first baby, Sonia and her husband were overjoyed to welcome their baby into the world and had spent a lot of time figuring out what they wanted that experience to look and feel like. Sonia knew from a very early age that she wanted to have a home birth with a surprise gender. She and her family did everything in their power to make that possible- and it was beautifully successful even after an intense labor and almost a hospital transfer due to meconium when her water broke and her midwives advised to transfer. Her baby was still at a 0 to -1 position as they moved downstairs to wait for the ambulance to arrive. However, as so often when the waters break late in labour she proceeded to push her baby out on a yoga mat on her living room floor in front of her entire family in about 10 minutes! Sonia is passionate about natural birth and encouraging women to know and trust how powerful and perfect their bodies and minds are! She hopes her story helps to normalize the home birth experience and empower women that your first birth is not a trial run. Curious about? For better or worse, 2024 is shaping up to be The Year of Hong Sang-Soo on IndieSeen! Ian and Sujewa take one last run at appreciating the South Korean critical darling with a look at his latest film, A Traveler's Needs.Isabelle Huppert stars as Iris, a French woman living in Seoul, whose unconventional method of teaching her language to locals has earned her a growing network of tutoring referrals. A Traveler's Needs follows for a day, as she meets with clients, explores local monuments, and tries to sort out her relationship with the young man with whom she shares an apartment. In this spoilerific discussion, the guys talk about their big-screen experiences--which is quite different from how they watched Hong's previous works, The Novelist's Film and In Front of Your Face. They also look at the filmmaker's merits; how the digital revolution created a subset of moviemaking workhorses who give short shrift to screenwriting; and discuss the future of Hong Sang-soo as a podcast subject (Hint: It's not looking good). So pour yourself some makgeolli and get ready for a conversation that's vastly more entertaining than the movie at hand!Subscribe, like, and comment on Kicking the Seat here on YouTube, and check us out at:kickseat.comXBlueSkyInstagramFacebookShow LinksWatch the A Traveler's Needs trailer.Catch up with our review of Hong Sang-soo's The Novelist's Film and In Front of Your Face. Ian and Sujewa get deja vu with Hong Sang-soo with their double-feature IndieSeen review of In Front of Your Face and The Novelist's Film! The guys had initially planned to only discuss one of the movies, but while doing some extra homework, Ian discovered that the prolific South Korean auteur had essentially made the same movie twice, within one year of each other. Hence, this bizarre journey into truly independent (and highly improvised) cinema. Both films share a high-level plot about an artist (one a retired actress, one a novelist) visiting old acquaintances and, through happenstance, getting entrenched in making a movie.Lee Hye-yeong stars in both films as the respective actress/novelist, and manages to pull off two very compelling and distinct performances. But is she underserved by a script that feels more like a list of prompts rather than the grand human-condition dramas they're billed as?In this spoilerific discussion, the guys talk about the dangers of loosey-goosey screenwriting; actor versatility; and why it's perfectly reasonable to not trust film critics (except for Ian, of course!).Subscribe, like, and comment to the Kicking the Seat YouTube channel, and check out kickseat.com for multiple movie podcasts each week!Show LinksWatch the In Front of Your Face trailer.Watch the Novelist's Film trailer.Watch Sujewa's latest film, Cosmic Disco Detective Rene for free on YouTube! Send us a textIn this day & age of abundance, you can easily forget what's precious - like your favourite bands. If you are anything like me the question “what's your favourite band” now has an official top 40. As in I have a rolling 40 favourite bands. Making a welcome return to the top 40 is Nada Surf, the ‘New York' (now firmly remote) indie band that first hit my favourites list way back in 2005. I always remember how I discovered a band, in the case of Nada Surf it was on a Mojo or Uncut free “covermount” CD (do they still do those?). The track “Do It Again” from The Weight Is A Gift Album (2005) has one of my all-time favourite basslines. Indeed, in our Art of Longevity chat, Matthew Caws and myself ended-up riffing on a playlist of pop songs in which the first thing you hear is the bass line. If playlists were still a thing, that would be a good one. It was a pleasant digression from the important matter of surviving the music industry. Nada Surf is one of those bands that's easy to forget about when music is so abundant and that would be a big mistake. Stumbling upon a new Nada Surf record every 4-5 years is a highly recommended balm for modern day life. I can't think of many bands (or in the case of Matthew Caws, songwriters) who provide the soundtrack to fumbling through life in the way we sometimes do, especially if you recognise the traits of attention deficit, as Matthew does - the origin and subject of the band's superb new song ‘In Front of Me Now', which I have adopted as a theme tune for the time being. In my head, if you will, this song is a number #1 hit single. Over the years, Matthew's subject matter for Nada Surf's songs covers life's day to day tribulations, the mangled thought processes that cycle through our brains and how to see light from the dark patterns that surround us. We are essentially keeping Matthew company as his life has played out. “Most of the time a song is just impressionistically how I'm feeling”. Nada Surf is one of those bands that made their way through a 30-year career and nine studio albums without disturbing the charts. Yet the band has never made a bad record and indeed Matthew, modest to a fault, is somewhat coerced into being proud of never making a dud album. “It has felt great in terms of longevity for a very long time. Unbelievably when we were making The Proximity Effect (the sophomore album in 1998) most of the bands that we toured with had broken up and we were sticking together. That felt unusual”. Whether new album Moon Mirror will change the trajectory for Nada Surf remains to be seen of course, although it's unlikely. That's just the modern music landscape in the streaming era. Perhaps what matters more, is that not only is the new album very much not a dud, but one of the best indie sets you are likely to hear in 2024. And that's saying something, since guitars and indie bands are back in fashion, albeit the modern kind i.e. a new crop of cult bands. Let's hope some of this new crop of indie guitar bands can stay the course the way Nada Surf has done. Turns out surfing on nothing can be a lasting pastime. On this episode of March Forth with Mike Bauman, Mike chats with Sunburnt! Comprised of Justin Tyler (vocals, guitar), Alex Pombar (bass), and Will Brown (guitar), Sunburnt is a pop punk trio from Southern California that stormed onto the scene in 2023 with their own unique blend of pop punk, alternative, pop, and hardcore. Having played music together for 15 years, the resurgence of pop punk and emo in recent years reignited the fire for Sunburnt to transition from performing cover songs in the genre to creating their own new tunes under a new name. On January 26th, Sunburnt dropped their debut EP entitled In Front of Me, a collection of the singles they dropped since emerging onto the scene. In addition to the positive online reception Sunburnt has seen via streams and playlist adds, the band has also played the famed Viper Room in Los Angeles, and has a SoCal run of shows lined up this spring, including a 4/19 gig at the House of Blues in San Diego. On this episode, Justin and Alex of Sunburnt talk with Mike about how they first got into music, their early days playing together and following Warper Tour, the resurgence of pop punk and emo since the pandemic, working with Jayden Seeley, forming their own sound with Sunburnt, and more. This episode of March Forth with Mike Bauman also features the song "In Front of Me" from Sunburnt, available where you get your music! Follow Sunburnt on Instagram @wearesunburnt.
