Powered by Firstory Hosting
Christmas Songs Pt. 1: Mary's Song By Louie Marsh, 12-7-2025 In response to the situation at hand Mary recited a song which praised God's favor on her and her people. "The Magnificat," as the song is called, consists almost entirely of Old Testament allusions and quotations. The same is true of the songs of Zechariah and Simeon. Mary's song has similarities to Hannah's song. 1 Sam. 2:1-10 – First four verses on the PPT 1) Gratitude – for a PERSONAL relationship with God. "46And Mary said, "My soul magnifies the Lord, 47and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior," (Luke 1:46–47, ESV) Some have wondered how this young woman managed to speak these insightful words. We can take this beautiful song as coming from the lips of a woman who deeply loved God and to whom God gave special understanding of what he was doing. Just as the Holy Spirit gave Elizabeth insight, so Mary received it as well "12But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, 13who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God." (John 1:12–13, ESV) 2) Hope – because appearances are DECEPTIVE. "48for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant…" (Luke 1:48a, ESV) · The FOOLISHNESS of God. "25For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men."…"27But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong;" (1 Corinthians 1:25,27, ESV) 3) Wonder – over GOD'S PLAN for my life. "48… from now on all generations will call me blessed;" (Luke 1:48b, ESV) When Mary said, "From now on all generations will call me blessed," was she being proud? No, she was recognizing and accepting the gift God had given her. If Mary had denied her privileged position, she would have been throwing God's blessing back at him. Pride is refusing to accept God's gifts or taking credit for what God has done; humility is accepting the gifts and using them to praise and serve God. Don't deny, belittle, or ignore your gifts. Thank God for them and use them to his glory "11For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope." (Jeremiah 29:11, ESV) 4) Excitement – that GOD'S POWER accomplishes His Plan! "49for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name." (Luke 1:49, ESV) "29For this I toil, struggling with all his energy that he powerfully works within me." (Colossians 1:29, ESV) 5) Relief – I'm FORGIVEN & RESTARTED by His Mercy! "50And his mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation." (Luke 1:50, ESV) THE BIG PICTURE 1) Peace – God is in CONTROL. "51He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts; 52he has brought down the mighty from their thrones and exalted those of humble estate;" (Luke 1:51–52, ESV) 2) Joy – God EXALTS the humble. "53he has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty." (Luke 1:53, ESV) 3) Faith – God will NEVER leave me. "54He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, 55as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his offspring forever."" (Luke 1:54–55, ESV) "18And Jesus came and said to them, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age."" (Matthew 28:18–20, ESV)

The Sprint Review shouldn't be a sleepy status update, it's a high-leverage inspection-and-adaptation event that shapes what happens next. In this episode, we break down what a great Sprint Review looks like, why developers should demo working product (not PPT slides), and how Product Owners and Scrum Masters can co-facilitate to keep it tight, focused, and valuable. Hear practical tips: crafting a clear agenda, inviting the right stakeholders, handling “over-talkers,” using parking lots, avoiding the dog-and-pony prep trap, and closing with decisions that feed straight into the backlog and the next Sprint Plan.
O mundo do trabalho mudou — e quem lidera precisa mudar junto. This is a public episode. Episode Summary:This time on the Event Tech Podcast, Brandt and Will welcome industry veteran Matthew Byrne to unpack the pains and progress of event content management. Byrne introduces ShowSync, a new solution designed to streamline the collection, synchronization, and distribution of event content- eliminating versioning headaches, USB thumbdrive chaos, and other PPT nightmares. The episode explores the real-world challenges that inspired ShowSync, how it works across multiple production environments, and the future possibilities for integrating with other industry tools.Discussions Include:The origin story of ShowSync and the persistent problems it solves in event productionHow ShowSync manages real-time content syncing, version control, and secure uploads across multiple machines and locationsTechnical insights into hardware integration, cloud syncing, and InfoSec compliance for sensitive client dataThe roadmap for ShowSync, including potential integrations and expansion into new event and retail environmentsQuotable Quotes (Should you choose to share):"Essentially what it does is it seamlessly syncs all of content across production for events- and then on the back end leverages out the content that's created at an event in a much more cost effective and efficient way." - Matthew Byrne"If then on machine one, you delete slide one, every version number 29 in that package on every machine just starts to lose slide one. Like as fast as the 10 gigabit connection can make that happen." - Matthew Byrne"We always say that a live event is a content machine. If we can cut down the expense and time to be able to leverage that value out, I think that that solves a lot of problems." - Matthew Byrne"It's always nice when someone's able to go, 'how about we put it all together into one thing and make it go?' It's wonderful." - Brandt KruegerLearn more about ShowSync at https://byrneproductionservices.com/showsync/

Can medication truly transform the landscape of pediatric mental health, or are we oversimplifying the complexities of growing minds? In this episode of Pediatric Meltdown, Dr. Lia Gaggino welcomes Dr. Jess Pierce, a hospital-based child psychiatrist whose expertise bridges the worlds of pediatrics and mental health, especially for children in rural areas. Unraveling the fascinating history of psychopharmacology and delving into the mechanisms of action for the antidepressants, this episode offers a roadmap for pediatricians navigating the maze of SSRIs, SNRIs, risks like serotonin syndrome, and difficult conversations about side effects. This month we're discussing notes and other techniques for when a PPT deck doesn't seem the most appropriate or right fit. Repeat after me, PPT is not the enemy, but there are other options for you to use like an organized note template, a whiteboard, a flipchart, or some form of brainstorming technique. If you're not going with a PPT, you have to decide 3 things: What are you going with? Choose your medium. What do I need to share? Create a plan before the meeting itself. Who am I speaking to and how long do I have? Know your audience and timing. From there, our biggest suggestion is to avoid scripting. You don't want to get stuck dropping your head and reading from your notes. This episode will provide some suggestions for how to organize effectively for this type of setting.

My guest today is my friend and PPT community favorite, Betsy Butterick! Betsy is a lifelong athlete who played college basketball, a coach, and communication specialist. She is known in the industry as “The Coaches' Coach”, mentoring leaders - from the boardroom to the locker room. Betsy has committed her life to helping leaders learn essential communication skills to help them better connect with the people they serve. As a communications expert and a generous teacher, she deeply understands the sociology of sports teams, and the importance of creating an optimal sports environment. More than anything, Betsy is committed to the lifelong practice of learning. If you are a coach, a leader, a parent, or around humans in general, you can learn something from Betsy. In our episode today, we chat about one of the most relevant topics in today's sports landscape: Coaching Gen Z! We cover: How to get athletes to buy-in and co-create their sports environment The challenges Gen Z faces that older generations did not. Modern coaching challenges that are causing coaches to leave their careers Simple tips to communicate with Gen Z, without sacrificing “old school values”. How psychological safety on a team impacts performance. Why strong-arming Gen Z athletes won't work, and what to do instead This episode gives coaches a new perspective and actionable tips to help them connect with their team in a way that makes the coach-athlete relationship and the team stronger. She then defines ”Gen Z”. [2:50] Betsy asks coaches to finish the sentence, “Kids these days are… “ and explains what that helps her discover about a team. Lindsey and Betsy discuss the few defining challenges that Gen Z has that older generations didn't have. [6:33] How can I get Gen Z to listen to me? Why do they seem to care so much about what other people think of them? Betsy shares her perspective and explains the extreme way in which Gen Z internalizes failure. Rather than - “I failed”, it's - “I am a failure”. [9:46] Betsy shares an example of one big mistake she sees many coaches making when it comes to giving feedback to Gen Z athletes. Lindsey and Betsy discuss why many lifelong coaches are now leaving their careers because what they're doing is no longer working with this generation. [14:54] “It's not that old school values are irrelevant, I would argue they're more needed than ever. Our ability to connect with athletes today is paramount to our ability to transform them.” [16:56] Lindsey asks Betsy for a few actionable tips to give coaches who work with Gen Z. Betsy chats about the importance of co-creation and defines what that looks like. [21:00] Lindsey draws a parallel between the best practices for coaching Gen Z and the way she approaches parenting. [22:50] Betsy tells a story about working with a coach who had a sign saying “Because I Said So” mounted to the wall. [26:46] Betsy outlines the huge risk to coaches who want to strongarm their way into coaching athletes their way. The two discuss the importance of “psychological safety” in sports. [28:28] How has the attention span of Gen Z shifted, and what can we do as educators to meet them where they're at? Lindsey talks about the importance of practicing what you preach. [32:56] Betsy peels back the curtain to share the highlights and structure of her Gen Z workshops. [35:28] Betsy talks about her new workshop, “Updates from the Field, Coaching Gen Z in an Optimal Sport Experience” - based on the last 5 years of conversations she had with Gen Z athletes, and why it has become the most requested keynote. Dr. Ajay Kothari returned as our guest. We started out with my asking Ajay about the lasted FAA-SpaceX tension and the fact that it seemed like one part of the government, NASA, was in opposition to other parts of the government, FAA, re SpaceX and Musk. This was possibly contributing delays for Artemis. I asked Ajay what he knew about all of this given his presence next to the Beltway and his connections. Don't miss how Ajay responded to this question. Next, we turned our attention to his repurposing nuclear propulsion for power on the Moon, in cislunar and for going to Mars project. He talked about using thorium and then U233. He explained the project which was also depicted in his PPT on our blog. He fielded many email questions plus he talked with several callers. What do you think of his plan & project. Let us know with your blog comments.
In today's episode, I'm going to perhaps work myself out of some consulting engagements, but hey, that's ok! True consulting is about service—not PPT decks with strategies and tiers of people attached to rate cards. Specifically today, I decided to reframe a topic and approach it from the opposite/negative side. So, instead of telling you when the right time is to get UX design help for your enterprise SAAS analytics or AI product(s), today I'm going to tell you when you should NOT get help! Reframing this was really fun and made me think a lot as I recorded the episode. Some of these reasons aren't necessarily representative of what I believe, but rather what I've heard from clients and prospects over 25 years—what they believe. For each of these, I'm also giving a counterargument, so hopefully, you get both sides of the coin. Finally, analytical thinkers, especially data product managers it seems, often want to quantify all forms of value they produce in hard monetary units—and so in this episode, I'm also going to talk about other forms of value that products can create that are worth paying for—and how mushy things like “feelings” might just come into play ;-) Ready? Highlights/ Skip to: (1:52) Going for short, easy wins (4:29) When you think you have good design sense/taste (7:09) The impending changes coming with GenAI (11:27) Concerns about "dumbing down" or oversimplifying technical analytics solutions that need to be powerful and flexible (15:36) Agile and process FTW? (18:59) UX design for and with platform products (21:14) The risk of involving designers who don't understand data, analytics, AI, or your complex domain considerations (30:09) Designing after the ML models have been trained—and it's too late to go back (34:59) Not tapping professional design help when your user base is small , and you have routine access and exposure to them (40:01) Explaining the value of UX design investments to your stakeholders when you don't 100% control the budget or decisions Quotes from Today's Episode “It is true that most impactful design often creates more product and engineering work because humans are messy. While there sometimes are these magic, small GUI-type changes that have big impact downstream, the big picture value of UX can be lost if you're simply assigning low-level GUI improvement tasks and hoping to see a big product win. It always comes back to the game you're playing inside your team: are you working to produce UX and business outcomes or shipping outputs on time? ” (3:18) “If you're building something that needs to generate revenue, there has to be a sense of trust and belief in the solution. We've all seen the challenges of this with LLMs. [when] you're unable to get it to respond in a way that makes you feel confident that it understood the query to begin with. And then you start to have all these questions about, ‘Is the answer not in there,' or ‘Am I not prompting it correctly?' If you think that most of this is just an technical data science problem, then don't bother to invest in UX design work… ” (9:52) “Design is about, at a minimum, making it useful and usable, if not delightful. In order to do that, we need to understand the people that are going to use it. What would an improvement to this person's life look like? Simplifying and dumbing things down is not always the answer. There are tools and solutions that need to be complex, flexible, and/or provide a lot of power – especially in an enterprise context. Working with a designer who solely insists on simplifying everything at all costs regardless of your stated business outcome goals is a red flag—and a reason not to invest in UX design—at least with them!“ (12:28)“I think what an analytics product manager [or] an AI product manager needs to accept is there are other ways to measure the value of UX design's contribution to your product and to your organization. Let's say that you have a mission-critical internal data product, it's used by the most senior executives in the organization, and you and your team made their day, or their month, or their quarter. You saved their job. You made them feel like a hero. What is the value of giving them that experience and making them feel like those things… What is that worth when a key customer or colleague feels like you have their back with this solution you created? Ideas that spread, win, and if these people are spreading your idea, your product, or your solution… there's a lot of value in that.” (43:33) “Let's think about value in non-financial terms. Terms like feelings. We buy insurance all the time. We're spending money on something that most likely will have zero economic value this year because we're actually trying not to have to file claims. Yet this industry does very well because the feeling of security matters. That feeling is worth something to a lot of people. The value of feeling secure is something greater than whatever the cost of the insurance plan. If your solution can build feelings of confidence and security, what is that worth? Does “hard to measure precisely” necessarily mean “low value?” (47:26)

Dr. Joanne BallardJoanne has a PhD in Geography from the University of Tennessee with specializations in Biogeography and Quaternary Environments, advised by Dr Sally Horn, palynologist. She has a M.S. in Geology from the University of Cincinnati, studying under glaciologist Dr. Thomas Lowell. She has also worked as an Archaeologist for the Tennessee Valley Authority as a Database Analyst and Mapping expert. In addition, Joanne worked for the US Census Bureau as an Analyst and Cartographic Technician, giving technical support, troubleshooting, and training personnel on addressing projects. Currently, Joanne is serving as a Naturalist at a local museum, and working with Czech colleagues on YDB research led by Dr. Evzen Stuchlik at the Czech Academy of the Sciences. Joanne is a catastrophist, and collaborates with the Comet Research Group.Joanne has been intrigued with the causation for the megafauna extinction since the 1990s. She met Rick Firestone at the Mammoth Conference in 2005 at Hot Springs, SD. When he and others presented their hypothesis on a bolide strike as causation for the Younger Dryas onset (Firestone et al. 2007), she wanted to look for evidence. Lake mud contains various proxies that help us gain insights into past environments, such as charcoal (wildfires), pollen and macrofossils (vegetation), diatoms, chironomids (climate) and chemistry--isotopes and elements. Lake mud is considered less disturbed (such as by roots, earthworms, freeze/thaw) than terrestrial sediment or soil. At UC, she and her team drilled through the ice to collect cores from four lakes near Flint, Michigan, two of which (Slack and Swift Lakes) are adjacent to the Gainey archaeological site mentioned by Firestone et al. (2007). At UT, she studied lake sediments from sites in the southeastern USA. She discovered a new proxy for wildfires--possibly catastrophic wildfires--which are siliceous aggregates. These form in wood ash. After a tree burns to ash, the silica phytoliths that were part of the structure of the tree are deposited with the wood ash. When that highly alkaline ash gets wet, it causes the phytoliths to dissolve, and the silica gel percolates down through the ash and then hardens up around silt or other particles in the sediment. Five of six lakes sampled across eastern North America showed siliceous aggregates around the time of the onset of the Younger Dryas, suggesting widespread, catastrophic wildfires. However, more work needs to be done to support this interpretation.Joanne has also researched Usselo Horizon sites (typically YDB-age black mats) in The Netherlands and Belgium to understand the events that triggered the onset of the Younger Dryas (12,900 - 11,600 BP). At four Usselo horizon sites across the NL and BE, she found fused quartz, soot, charcoal, melt glass and sponge spicules.See her PPT presentation "Usselo Horizon Presentation" here:https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Joanne-Ballard/researchDid humans tame woolly mammoths? Now it's trying to cut rates in an election year. The Federal Reserve is loath to get involved in elections or politics. But 2024 is already shaping up to be quite the collision course. At Wednesday's hearing, Powell will tell lawmakers the next move isn't yet decided. “If the economy evolves broadly as expected, it will likely be appropriate to begin dialing back policy restraint at some point this year," Powell will say, according to prepared remarks. “But the economic outlook is uncertain, and ongoing progress toward our 2 percent inflation objective is not assured.” But rate cuts — which aren't expected to start until sometime this summer — could read differently on the campaign trail. The Biden administration, for one, is playing up strong growth, a booming job market and easing inflation. Yet the president's polling on the economy — especially on inflation — is weak, and his campaign would probably benefit from rate cuts that ease steep prices for mortgages, car insurance and business investment. (White House officials are diligent about not commenting on Fed policy, sticking to a longtime custom that President Donald Trump often abandoned.)
