The Heat is On is an investigative series by Scrolling 2 Death, in partnership with Heat Initiative. Sarah Gardner, Founder and CEO of Heat Initiative, joins Nicki (S2D) to expose the truth Big Tech doesn't want you to hear – and this episode is all about Snapchat. From a disappearing-nude app in 2011 to a social media giant in 2025, Snapchat's story is one of innovation, imitation, and controversy. When it comes to digital harms and kids, Snapchat ranks among the worst—which is why this story expands two parts. In Part 1, we're exposing how Snapchat's “innovations” have put profits ahead of our children's safety. Snapchat's culture was flawed from the start. The FTC sanctioned the company early on for misleading users about how ‘private' disappearing snaps really were. Since then, features like Discover and AR filters have been designed to keep kids endlessly engaged, regardless of the consequences.Today, nearly half of all U.S. teens use Snapchat. Yet the platform continues to enable drug poisonings, connect minors with predators, and drive addictive use. As psychologist Jonathan Haidt warns, Snapchat is harming children on an industrial scale - and insiders admit the company knows but fails to act.Online drug dealing, especially fentanyl-laced pills, has fueled a 350% rise in teen deaths over the past three years. Snapchat's Quick Add feature helps dealers find young users, exposing an estimated 700,000 people to drug content daily. Even when dealers are reported, only one in four accounts is removed.Sextortion is another growing crisis. Snapchat receives about 10,000 reports each month— numbers employees say barely scratch the surface. Predators exploit the app's disappearing messages, and with Snap Map, digital threats increasingly turn into real-world harm.Rather than designing for safety, Snapchat keeps doubling down on engagement. Features like Snapstreaks drive compulsive use; 45% of teens now use the app “almost constantly.” Your child's attention keeps them profitable. In this episode, Sarah and Nicki hear from parents and experts who've seen the damage firsthand. Their message is clear: these aren't accidents - they're design choices. The question is...can Snapchat fix this? Or is Snap a lost cause?Video Editing expertly provided by Jacob Meade.Thank you to our featured guests:Laura Marquez-Garrett - Attorney, Social Media Victims Law CenterAmy Neville - Parent survivor, founder of Alexander Neville FoundationJonathan Haidt - Author of The Anxious GenerationPaul Raffile - Cyber-analyst and worldwide sextortion expertAaron Ping - Survivor parent of Avery Ping and host of the Superhuman podcastJim & Kate Sullivan - Survivor parent of Jack SullivanAnna McAdams - Online safety advocate and mom of EllistonPaul Solotaroff - Senior Writer at Rolling StoneMike Neff - Attorney, Neff Injury LawSarah Gallagher Trombley - former Snapchat Exec and Founder of Digital Mom Media

The MacVoices Live! reacts to Apple's decision to discontinue the Clips app and rename Apple TV+ simply to Apple TV. Chuck Joiner, Dave Ginsburg, Brian Flanigan-Arthurs, Jim Rea, Marty Jencius, and Norbert Frassa debate why Clips failed to gain traction, Apple's pattern of abandoning smaller software, and how confusing naming conventions blur the lines between Apple's hardware, apps, and streaming service. On September 30th., International Podcast Day, the Podcast Super Friends, welcomed Kendall Breitman, Community Lead at Riverside, with big news on a major product rollout: Riverside's launch of its new chat-based editing tool — the "AI Co-Creator," affectionately nicknamed “Coco” by the internal team. Co-Creator introduces a major shift in how podcasters can handle post-production. Instead of manually editing timelines or transcripts, users can simply type what they want — like “make this episode more engaging” or “cut the part about watermelons” — and Riverside's AI will handle the edits. The tool supports everything from layout changes, B-roll additions, branding overlays, to audio cleanup like EQ adjustments and filler word removal, all with user-guided flexibility. Kendall walks us through the evolution of the tool — how it started as a way to generate show notes and blog posts directly from transcripts, and now powers full post-production editing, video layout automation, and audio enhancements like Magic Audio and Smart Mute. Co-Creator's AI capabilities also include adding royalty-free music, removing background noise, and even dynamically changing video composition based on prompts. While you still have full control to fine-tune manually, the tool helps users speed up their editing dramatically. We also discuss the importance of community feedback. Kendall emphasizes Riverside's commitment to implementing user suggestions quickly, with the Facebook group "Conversation Creators by Riverside" acting as a hub for ideas and feedback. In fact, several features — including the Editor Add-On that lets producers access client accounts — were born directly from community input. The conversation touches on pricing barriers for small-scale producers, the benefits of using iPhones as high-quality second cameras, and the addition of Safari support — making the platform even more accessible. We also explore Riverside's live streaming capabilities, which let creators stream to multiple platforms including YouTube, LinkedIn, Facebook, and custom RTMP destinations — with multi-channel live chat support. Kendall suggests this is a great next step for creators looking to deepen audience engagement, especially as platforms reward live content in their algorithms. Wrapping up, Kendall highlights Riverside's free resources, like the Community Hub (riverside.com/community) and their live workshop series, which showcase workflows from everyday creators. She also teases future updates and encourages everyone to keep checking back — because the features keep rolling out fast. On Tuesday, DoorDash unveiled Dot, a small robot it built in-house that can autonomously drive on roads, bike lanes, and sidewalks to deliver food and small packages at speeds up to 20 miles per hour. Dot is designed to look friendly and even cartoonish — painted bright red, with big LED eyes and a mouth that swings open to reveal where it holds your food — though some would argue it's slightly creepy. Also, Adobe's popular video editing app Premiere is available on iPhone starting today, following the company's announcement of its plans to release the app on mobile earlier this month. If you're creating content that feels like it's screaming into the void, getting minimal engagement, and not converting to sales, you're probably missing at least 1 of these 4 critical components. Today, I'm breaking down the framework I use to evaluate every single piece of content before it goes live. And it's the same system that separates content that converts from content that flops. Here's the thing: if you're approaching every piece of content thinking it needs to directly convert to a sale, you're setting yourself up for frustration and overwhelm. That's not how social media works, and it's definitely not how you build a sustainable content strategy that actually grows your business. I recently went back through my own content and realized I was making some of these mistakes too. I looked at every post I've stopped to engage with, save, or share, and they all had these 4 elements. When I audited my own feed with this lens, I found only two posts that would have made me stop scrolling, and that explained everything about my reach and engagement. This framework works whether you're creating carousels, reels, or any other format on Instagram. It's designed to move people through your social media funnel to whatever your actual conversion goal is: your email list, podcast, freebie, or YouTube channel. And the best part? Once you nail these four components, your content becomes evergreen and continues working for you long-term. In today's episode, we're talking about: The captivating hook formula How to craft a clear message Creative format strategies Call-to-action variety Why captions aren't what they used to be
