Steven Halpern is an award-winning composer, recording artist and producer whose healing music has helped millions worldwide to experience the blessings and benefits of deep relaxation and inner peace.CHAKRA SUITE, his debut release in 1975 helped establish a quiet revolution and a new genre in contemporary instrumental music. Based on his own spiritual and health-related experiences, Steven discovered secrets of combining ancient sound healing traditions with quantum biology and energy medicine to produce recordings that support relaxation, stress management, yoga, meditation, massage, sleep, accelerated learning and pure listening pleasure.Halpern's most representative and best-selling recordings include PEACE OF MIND, MUSIC FOR SOUND HEALING, INNER PEACE, IN THE OM ZONE and the Billboard-charting DEJA-BLUES.Steven Halpern is more than just a musician. He is a Renaissance man who is also an author, media spokesperson, seminar leader, pioneering sound healer and entrepreneur who helped create the alternative market for lifestyle-support music outside the traditional music industry. Steven has been recognized by Keyboard magazine as "one of the 30 most influential keyboard artists of the past 50 years."After being initiated into what he has described as a ministry of healing music, Steven was encouraged to scientifically validate the extraordinary effects his music was having on listeners. This research, and his first two books, Tuning the Human Instrument (1977) and Sound Health (Harper & Row, 1985) established him as the pre-eminent spokesperson for the emerging field of sound healing.https://www.stevenhalpernmusic.com/https://www.youtube.com/user/StevenHalpernMusicAffirmation: I am open to the healing and alignment my cells receive from the music of the universe.Oracle Cards: Four of Ariel: When you give, you also receive! Liz and Ben are joined by writer and publisher Peter M Ball for Pratchat's first foray into Pratchett's nonfiction! We discuss fandom, genre, Sharknado, figgins and even fit in six pieces from “A Scribbling Intruder”, the first section of Pratchett's 2014 nonfiction anthology A Slip of the Keyboard. Pratchett writes about the letters he receives from various kinds of fans as a popular genre author in “Kevins” (1993), before revisiting the same topic in the email age and explaining why he quit his own newsgroup in “Wyrd Ideas” (1999), both for The Author magazine. Then its time to discuss fantasy as a genre - both advice for writing it in “Notes From a Successful Fantasy Author: Keep It Real” for the 2007 edition of The Writers and Artists Notebook, and reasons why children should be reading it in “Let There Be Dragons”, a speech given at the Booksellers Association Annual Conference in 1993. Finally, best mates Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman tell us how they feel about each other, Terry in “Neil Gaiman: Amazing Master Conjuror” for the Boskone 39 convention booklet (2002), and Neil in his Foreword for A Slip of the Keyboard (2014). As we've discussed before, Pratchett was never one to let a good idea only be used once - and you may have heard him talk to some of the themes in these pieces when being interviewed. Short stories may have cost him blood, as he used to say, but he never lost his journalistic mojo for writing fact and opinion - or replying to reader mail! Have you ever written to a famous author (a nauthor, if you will)? Would you want them to read your fanfic? What was the first book you read by choice? Can you pin down exactly what makes Pratchett's writing almost a genre unto itself, when others could be said to follow his advice? And go on, you can tell us: which of Liz and Ben is the Terry, and which is the Neil? Join the conversation using the hashtag #Pratchat65. Guest Peter M Ball is an author, publisher and avid roleplayer based in Meanjin (aka Brisbane) in Queensland. Peter teaches creative writing, worked for the Queensland Writers Centre on the Australian Writers Marketplace and GenreCon, and is currently completing a PhD in Writing at the University of Queensland. You can find all of Peter's social media links, and discover more about his own work - including a free sampler of some of his writing - at petermball.com.au. Peter also runs the small press publisher Brain Jar Press, who specialise in shorter works of genre fiction and genre nonfiction. They've published Peter's work, but also that of friends of this podcast Sean Williams (#Pratchat56) and Tansy Rayner Roberts (#PratchatNA7). Peter suggested Pratchett fans might enjoy Tansy's brand new short story collection about seven women from Greek mythology, Gorgons Deserve Nice Things, or the Writer Chaps series of sci-fi and fantasy writers writing about writing. You'll find notes and errata for this episode on our web site. Grab your broom and your pointy hat and watch out for giants and pictsies, because next month we get back to Pratchett's novels with the fourth Tiffany Aching novel, I Shall Wear Midnight! And we're delighted to welcome back as a guest author Amie Kaufman, last heard discussing some of Pratchett's other tiny people nearly five years ago in #Pratchat9, “Upscalator to Heaven”. Get your questions in before the last week of March via email (chat@pratchatpodcast.com) or social media using the hashtag #Pratchat66.

My guest this week is Kelli Richards, who's been a trusted Advisor to legendary musicians, tech executives, leaders and innovators. During her 25 years as a consultant she's worked with artists like Paul McCartney, Todd Rundgren, Stewart Copeland, Prince, Michael Jackson and even Apple Computer founder Steve Jobs. While she was still in high school, Kelli approached Steve at a local cafe in Cupertino, and he accepted her request for him to be her mentor, which started a relationship that lasted over 30 years until his passing.  She put herself through college by working at GPI Publications, (the home of Guitar Player, Keyboard & Bass Magazines), and then moved to Hollywood where she  landed a job as an A&R exec at EMI Music. Kelli eventually headed back to Apple, and was in charge of the company's early forays in music, as she was largely responsible for making Apple computers the go-to computer for creatives everywhere. Since Apple, she has worked with a range of disruptive, innovative start-ups, and Fortune 100 companies as an advisor, consultant, and sometimes as an acting VP of Business Development and Strategic Partnerships. During the interview spoke about getting Steve Jobs as her mentor as a teenager, laying the foundation for Apple in the music and film communities, helping Todd Rundgren build Patronet,   working as a young A&R exec, moving into the roll of trusted advisor, the future of digital music, and much more.  I spoke with Kelli via Zoom from her office in the heart of Silicon Valley. On the intro I'll take a look at how we now live in a 32 hour day, and how to clean and disinfect a microphone. var podscribeEmbedVars = { epId: 84901026, backgroundColor: 'white', font: undefined, fontColor: undefined, speakerFontColor: undefined, height: '600px', showEditButton: false, showSpeakers: true, showTimestamps: true };

This month, Ben flies solo with guest Andy Matthews as they reach back into Pratchett's earliest fiction to discuss Beatrix Potter, writing practice, The Matrix...oh, and Terry's 1973 short story for the Bucks Free Press, “RIncemangle, the Gnome of Even Moor”! The suspiciously familiar-sounding Gnome Rincemangle lives a sad, solitary life on the strange and mysterious (but also wet and cold) Even Moor. One day an owl tells him about the wonders of the nearby human village of Blackbury, so off he goes, accidentally hitching a ride on a lorry to department store. There he discovers he's not the only Gnome in the world - but is the Store truly as much of a paradise as it seems? Written on Thursday evenings for “Uncle Jim's” children's page when Pratchett himself was just 25 years old, this story forms the blueprint for the novel Truckers, published sixteen years later. How has Pratchett's writing evolved over time? Is Andy right that “yearning” lies at the heart of his most successful work? Would this story amuse or frighten your children? Which of his other short stories should we give the full episode treatment? And is Pratchett the undisputed king of “fishing in his own stream” (sorry again, Ryn), or is this something all writers do, just less obviously? Join the conversation using the hashtag #Pratchat64. Guest Andy Matthews is a comedian, podcaster and most recently an author. He writes and performs sketch comedy with Alasdair Trembly-Birchall, both live and on the podcast Two in the Think Tank, and the pair previously hosted the ABC radio comedy science quiz The Pop Test. Andy is also the Director of Stupid Old Studios, a podcast and video production studio in Melbourne, and the author of two volumes (so far) of Gustav & Henri, a "science fiction mystery time travel detective story” about friendship and snacks starring a dog and a pig, illustrated by Peader Thomas. You can find Andy on Twitter at @stupidoldandy, and his podcast at @twointank. You'll find notes and errata for this episode on our web site. For our March episode, we're going where Pratchat has never gone before: into Pratchett's nonfiction! Author, publisher and roleplayer Peter M. Ball joins us for a collection of Pratchett's scribblings about genre, fandom and Neil Gaiman. The specific pieces are “Kevins”, “Wyrd Ideas”, “Let There Be Dragons” and “Notes From A Successful Fantasy Author”, plus “Neil Gaiman: Amazing Master Conjuror” and Neil's foreword to the book in which all of these were collected, 2014's A Slip of the Keyboard. You'll find all of those (except the foreword) in the book's first section, “A Scribbling Intruder”. Send us your questions about them via email to chat@pratchatpodcast.com, or on social media using the hashtag #Pratchat65.

There are a couple of moments in this weeks chapter when I tried my hand at improv.Whilst answering a question about Pour My Love I decided (in the moment no less) to illustrate my point by playing a bit of the keyboard part. Not a bad idea you would have thought, especially as I had the piano on front of me - and do you know what, I absolutely nailed it. Boom.No more than five minutes later, another executive-on-the-fly-decision was made as we agreed not to bother with a diary reading. Ant suggested we should still have a little musical interlude and emboldened with my earlier success I decided to play that interlude live - which I did with a wink to the camera and a flourish at the end.Quality podcasting. Xerolinux https://xerolinux.xyz I installed XeroLinux on an older I mac I had, mostly due to 2 factors, I had the hardware and A review I saw touted the MAC like interface from a modified KDE Plasma base. As a Plasma user, how could I resist. I had previously installed Fedora 36 on the MAC and was receiving random hardware issues at boot time, I wanted to see if the issue persisted on and Arch base, and since I had never used Arch, this was a perfect test case. The install: Power on the MAC and (if you have a MAC keyboard) press and hold the Option key. This presented me with 2 options, boot into fedora, or to the EFI partition on my USB with XeroLinux installer. Select the EFI USB device I was then presented with 4 menu options, XeroLinux installer, REFI boot options, MAC OS and reboot I chose to boot into the Installer In the GUI installer I was first given the options to install several fixes for virtual environments including Qemu and VMWare as well as an install option Next I was greeting (literally with a welcome screen proclaiming “Welcome Fellow Linux Nerds” ) I am at home...lol After selecting language, time zone and Keyboard layouts, The disk partitioning options are presented (and in much less confusing verbage than Fedora) and you are given choice of what swap partition type to use, No Swap, Swap no hibernate swap with hibernate and swap to file also a choice of file system, xfs, btrfs of ext4. I chose xfs the default, and since this is just a toy, not a high availability/high capacity server, there is no need for BTRFS, and if I am happy with the state of the system, I may well use it as a media server or Plex server and in that case I’ll need the larger file capacity of XFS Also available are the file system encryption check box and a manual partition options Under the user account setup, it detected and offered to set the machine name as MAcPro51, which is fine, it’ll help me id the device on my network, VS a unique name I would then have to come up with but would inevitably also contain “MAC” The page also included check boxes to validate password strength (forcing strong passwords, an auto-login option and an option to “reuse user password as root password. Obviously for SUDO purposes, this would not be recommended, but in my situation, I did chose it and the strong passwords validation The next screen verifies all the selections and when next is clicked, A pop-up wants you to confirm again that you want to make the changes selected. (insert jeopardy music while the install happens) During the install, there is a button to observe what is actually going on in the background, partitioning, file copies, compiles, etc First boot and login Well poop,I see a message in the boot screens referring to a hardware issue in CPU0 bank 8, there might be a hardware issue, it IS and older Intel MAC after all… Step one is, as always, update the system Picture 1 Click the thumbnail to see the full-sized image Yes, that is a silhouette of the MST3K guys, I’m using a 720 P TV as my monitor and watch movies when I’m in my home office. 121 packages are ready fro update including Kernel 5.19.12 (more jeopardy Music) next stop: install proprietary driver , open source drivers and non-preinstalled apps All this went very smoothly, as though the distro maintainers had put lots of work and thought into it. To say I’m impressed is an understatement so far. Also there’s a handy dandy “Post install system config button, let’s see what that does… Picture 2 Click the thumbnail to see the full-sized image Man, all kinds of goodies to play with!! With such goodies as Yakuake, Avanti browser and KDE connect preinstaled, the only thing I really needed was a decent office suite, Libre office, of course… The XeroLinux “Hello” app is quite a setup, offering all the tools you need to get up and running. With an app browser very similar to Discover, used by Fedora, finding LibreOffice was easy, tick a check box, a few dependencies needed confirmation, click install and poof, done. I was able to seamlessly browse the internet and watched a full length Jackie Chan movie on Netflix with no issues or buffering, Libre-office Calc opened in about 5 seconds, only marginally slower than my regular I7 desktop PC running Fedora 35. The hardware 2010 MACPRO5.1 with dual Intel Xeon 12 core processors running at 2.5Ghz and 32 GB ram and an ATI Radeon HD 5770 I bought the MAC at a local college surplus auction with no hard drive, and installed a 500GB “spinning rust” hard drive I happened to have laying around. As older hardware, it’s still fairly quiet and crash free, so far. With a modest up time of 5 days.
