Returning all-star guest Max Flight helps me cover 17 ways to re-evaluate your podcast this summer, and we also discuss Max's latest podcast production workflow, equipment, software and more. Max has been producing aviation podcasts since 2008: Airplane Geeks (now over 700 episodes!) The UAV Digest (looking at unmanned aircraft or drones) Check out his main site — http://thirtythousandfeet.com/ He was previously on episodes 20 and 39 of this show Check out his equipment, software, services and more below... We discuss these 17 ways in which you can re-evaluate and improve your show this summer: Update your goals Change the format Start using chapters Personal focus on eliminating verbal crutches. (A short duration of intense focus will provide years of good results) Change and/or add equipment Sell old equipment Treat yourself to that mic you've always wanted Sound absorption and diffusers Add a new segment Cover new yet pertinent subject matter topics Publish in video format as well Publish better shownotes Revamp your marketing Evaluate the shows overall effectiveness Hire a VA Bring on a cohost Decide to end your show??? Perhaps decide you want to become a professional podcast engineer/producer and earn a great living producing podcasts for clients - from home?! And here's a lot more detail on Max's production: Big changes since PES 20 and PES 39 mostly involve a simplification of the signal path: Skype and cohost multi-enders replaced by Riverside.fm Behringer mixer (still going strong since 2009!) replaced with MixPre The MixPre handles all mic pre-amplification Sound clips and pre-recorded segments played through Riverside, replacing an iOS soundboard Backup recording is handled by the MixPre Current equipment: Sound Devices MixPre-6 Also use a MixPre-3 Gen 2 for field recordings Zoom H5 for field recordings, too Heil PR40 Sennheiser MD46 interview mic Dell XPS 16 and MacBook Pro 15-inch, 2018 model, 2.9GHz i9 32 GB laptops Audio Technica ATH-M50x headphones Yamaha HS5 monitors Software: Riverside.fm (was Skype then Squadcast) Hindenburg Journalist Pro Audacity (yep!) iZotope RX 8 Advanced ID3 Editor for tagging Services: Media hosting: Blubrry and Libsyn Website hosting: Bluehost and SiteGround Notes from Max: I'm retired and traveling more which makes weekly podcast production a bit more difficult. Biggest current problem: At the home studio I mix/master with my Yamaha monitors, which I love. I can't master properly with the Audio Technica headphones when traveling. Other Notes: If you ever have questions please reach out! You can sign up to receive Daily Goody's in your email a few times per week or a weekly roundup. Sign up here. The start date for the next PES semester is Sep. 13, 2022! (fyi, the course is delivered once per quarter) If you'd like to share this show with any of your podcaster friends, feel free to send them a message saying, “Btw, here's a show about podcast audio production you may find helpful” with this link: https://podcastengineeringschool.com/subscribe/) Let me know if you have any questions or need any help with anything, ~Chris

Fawn and Matt open this show with the admission that it’s hard to feel inspired to talk about a friendly world when the world sometimes appears anything but friendly. All countries and cultures have been experiencing so much hardship and with the rise in violence in the United States, Fawn finds it hard to keep a positive outlook. But they try, and they recall all the kindness they have experienced in their lives. They keep telling and recalling stories until they begin to feel more hope. TRANSCRIPT: Keep the Faith – episode 41 Fawn and Matt open this show with the admission that it’s hard to feel inspired to talk about a friendly world when the world sometimes appears anything but friendly. All countries and cultures have been experiencing so much hardship and with the rise in violence in the United States, Fawn finds it hard to keep a positive outlook. But they try, and they recall all the kindness they have experienced in their lives. They keep telling and recalling stories until they begin to feel more hope. Nugget of wisdom from Santa Monica – The rollerblading knight in shining armor who told Fawn to stop crying and to have Faith. Hall of Fame Quotes from this episode: On feeling bad or having a bad day: Matt: …everybody has those moments and those days. And I think it's so important during those days to take us back that we really take a look at and really hopefully try and remember those moments of kindness from the past and hold ourselves open to those moments of kindness coming to us in the future. On being open to kindness: Matt: “…it seems like I refused to make myself vulnerable to anything and anyone. And so nobody could really give me an act of kindness because I didn't even allow them the opportunity to even understand what that may look like, because I was so like guarded and angry.” Matt: “…it can be interesting the way an act of kindness can get magnified; Just the tiniest little thing.” Matt: “You never know where your kindness is going and you never know if your kindness will rebound on you, which is why you should be kind.” Matt: “kindness is one of those things that grows. And sometimes you don't even know why things are going well, but we'd like to say like attracts, like, and what you focus on grows. So if you focus on kindness, if you focus on helping people, if you focus on, in those moments, hopefully, and we've experienced it in those moments where you need people to be kind, when you're in that situation, as I like to say, Battlestar Galactica, quote out there for you, sometimes you gotta roll the hard six. When you're in those situations, if you have been kind in the past and you're drawing in kindness, then you know, hopefully you will receive it. Because you're focused on kind.” Matt: “A smile and a nod makes you feel good.” MixPre-238 [00:00:00] Fawn: [00:00:00] Hello, everyone. Welcome to our friendly worlds. Matt: [00:00:04] Welcome. Welcome!. Fawn: [00:00:05] Hello. Kindness comes from the old English word, kindness, meaning nation Matt: [00:00:13] (Matt laughs) kindness comes from kindness. Fawn: [00:00:15] I know don't you love the dictionaries, but this is the etymology of it. Let me start over. Kindness comes from the old English word kynd. This it's actually KYNDNES. Yeah. K Y N D N E S. Meaning nation or produce i

In today's Q&A Friday, we talk about our audio setup, tools for writing, building a SaaS company, books, how to read an article, hobbies, and more!Q: What is your audio set up?We use the MixPre 3 since it has three audio inputs. We also like that it can use batteries and an SD card. It makes it very portable and can be used without a computer if you have to go out to grab an interview with someone. For mics, we use the Audio Technica AT875R. It's a great shotgun mic that works well in spaces that aren't acoustically treated. Finally, we use Sony MDR7506 headphones.Q: What tool do you use to draft your writing? We use tools like Ulysses for a pure writing experience. It has a great “table of contents” style organization. We also use Notion for long-form and collaborative writing.Q: What's one thing you learned about building a SaaS company that you think is a valuable lesson for creators? The first thing that comes to mind is that it will take a lot longer than you think. You've got to make sure you keep at it and have the mindset of showing up every day for years. Q: Which books about writing non-fiction would you recommend?Nathan recommends Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott. Barrett recommends The Golden Book on Writing by David Lambuth, Zen and the Art of Writing by Ray Bradbury, On Speaking Well by Peggy Noonan, The Pyramid Principle by Barbara Minto, and On Writing by Steven King.Q: When you read articles, do you read the entire article, or just skim for highlights? We usually read the entire thing. If we're thinking of giving up on an article, then we start skimming to give it more of a chance.Q: Are you expecting a decrease in your customer base from people who have gone out of business? We've seen a little bit of that, but we've actually seen more growth as businesses try to increase their online presence.Q: What are your hobbies?Nathan - playing outside with his kids, practicing soccer by himself, woodworking, and reading books. Barrett - reading and writing, hiking, skiing, camping, and fly-fishing. Q: What are your priorities for revenue as your business increases? We'll invest heavily in the product. We've added team members recently and we've put more money into advertising. As the work we do changes so does our gear. After quite a bit of research Robert tests out a Sound Devices MixPre 3 (mark II version). This is not a full review as yet just an overall first experience with the field mixer to see how well the pre-amps work and how easy it is to get a good recording out of the unit. Great conversation with Bryan Entzminger, host of Engaging Missions and podcast engineer/editor. We discuss his podcast production and quite a bit about his preferred DAW which he is quite skilled in using: Hindenburg Journalist Pro. Here is Bryan's Live Demonstration of Hindenburg Journalist Pro, and here's a 90-day free trial of Hindenburg Journalist Pro. Here are Bryan's production details: Electro-Voice RE320 Rolls cough switch Sound Devices MixPre-3 For remote internet calls, I use a second computer (an old Dell) into the line in for the MixPre-3 using a hardware mix-minus in the MixPre I record 2 tracks right onto the SD card in the MixPre. I also run 2 tracks via USB into my MacBook Pro and record into Hindenburg Journalist Pro Voice profiler in Hindenburg can create custom profiles! For editing, I use Hindenburg Journalist Pro along with iZotope RX7 for audio restoration and Ozone 7 for mastering and a variety of Waves and other plugins depending on the need. I mix and edit in multitrack mode, export to WAV fully mastered but not normalized to -16/-19. I then bring that mastered file back into Hindenburg to level using the loudness matching and either convert to MP3 using Hindenburg or RX7. If I use Hindenburg, I'll also apply the id3 tags and upload right to Libsyn from there. Also, Bryan got back to me about the Hindenburg auto-leveling feature that we discussed in the episode: "I did several checks with the auto-level with effects and it appears my original assumption was correct. The auto-level is at the "region" (clip) level upon input - prior to ANY processing within Hindenburg." Thanks for sharing so much great info, Bryan! If your audio is great people can forgive medicore video, but if it sounds bad people will turn it off. This episode we are talking with mic and preamp reviewer Curtis Judd (http://learnlightandsound.com) and podcast producer Ray Ortega (https://rayortega.com) the simple secrets to audio production for some common situations. This podcast is brought to you by Epidemic Sound (http://share.epidemicsound.com/stalmanpodcast), where creators can easily license sound effects and music for all your creative projects Audio for social media The priority for quick social media videos like Instagram stories is to keep it simple and sounding great. When you turn on the selfie camera, you‘re off to a great start because the mic is only an arm's length from you face and most phones have decent mics these days. Just be extra careful not make the biggest rookie mistake of covering the mic with your pinkie finger. Stay aware of which direction the mic is facing since phones have mics on the front, back and bottom. If you are pointing it away from you, your voice will get a lot quieter. If this is a situation, you often find yourself in, there are external mics that can help with that. Portable mics for phones Rode Video Me (https://amzn.to/2VWliRg) Shure MV88 (https://amzn.to/2FKCWBU) Audio for Vloging Similiar to a phone selfie, the vlog format has the instant advtage of mic proximity. As long as you've plugged in a half decent mic, set the levels, and put on appropriate wind protection, it's easy to get great audio. With this format, background noise isn't a huge problem since it blends in with the overall context of the story you‘re telling. What matters most is that you can be heard clearly. Mics for vlogging Rode Video Micro (https://amzn.to/2Ta81mc) Rode VideoMic Pro+ (https://amzn.to/2W1BTTU) Deity V-Mic D3 Pro (https://amzn.to/2W1QdLY) Audio in a YouTuber Studio If people are going to be watching your videos on TV, laptops or with headphones you owe it to them to keep the audio as clean as possible. When they are focused on you‘re talking head, details like echo and background noise start to matter more. So after you've taken the first steps of turning off the AC and unplugging the fridge (TIP: put your keys inside as a way to remember to plug it back in), it's time to treat the room for reverb. In real life, reverb is easy to ignore. Put a decent mic in a room and every echo is a distraction. There are a few simple and affordable solutions, best of all is to drape sound blankets in front of any hard reflective surfaces. This will make the single biggest difference, ever more than you‘re choice in microphone. And speaking of microphones the gold standard is Sennheiser MKH416 (https://amzn.to/2FL0F56), which now used by top YouTubers like MKBHD and Johnathan Morrison, but if $1,000 is out of your budget the Deity S-Mic 2 (https://amzn.to/2CuBgsY) is incredibly similar for a fraction of the price. A favorite of Ray and Curtis is the AudioTechnica AT4053B (https://amzn.to/2CudEov). Once you've picked out your mic, choose a field recorder and plug it in. For the budget minded, the Tascam DR-60DII (https://amzn.to/2DjGZUe) is a great choice or if you want to go straight for the best pick up the SoundDevices MixPre-3 (https://amzn.to/2VYap1v). And make sure you get some good Sound Blankets (https://www.vocalboothtogo.com/shop-soundproofing-curtains-mobile-vocal-booths-accessories/) YouTube Studio mics and premps Rode VideoMic Pro+ (https://amzn.to/2W1BTTU) SoundDevices MixPre-3 (https://amzn.to/2VYap1v) or MixPre-6 (https://amzn.to/2DmaZPn) Sennheiser MKH416 (https://amzn.to/2FL0F56) Rode NTG-1 (https://amzn.to/2sBqTPC) or NTG-2 (https://amzn.to/2SXOju8) Deity S-Mic 2 (https://amzn.to/2CuBgsY) Tascam DR-70D (https://amzn.to/2ATAtSt) Tascam DR-60DII (https://amzn.to/2DjGZUe) Zoom F4 (https://amzn.to/2sCzbH2) Zoom H6 (https://amzn.to/2W5vWWa) Zoom F8N (https://amzn.to/2szNEDq) AudioTechnica AT4053B (https://amzn.to/2CudEov) Podcasting & Voice Over All the rules of in studio videos apply, but your audience is listening a lot more closely so the pressure is on to make your audio production sound amazing. Ray Ortega (https://thepodcastersstudio.com/gear/) has a great writeup on all your gear needs, but the basics are that you want decent mic that rejects background sounds, a low noise preamp and an echo free room. Sounds blankets are your best friend here, so you might want to build a little fort, or at least make sure you've got some furniture and carpets in the room. There are many great mics to choose from, for beginners the AudioTechnica ATR-2100 (https://amzn.to/2MjbJHN) sounds shockingly good for it's price and can be plugged in via USB or XLR. If you want to step up your game, Tyler likes the Heil PR-40 (https://amzn.to/2VZGzK5) while Ray uses the Shure SM7B (https://amzn.to/2sA3JZV). Podcast mics and preamps Shure SM7B (https://amzn.to/2sA3JZV) Heil PR-40 (https://amzn.to/2VZGzK5) AudioTechnica ATR-2100 (https://amzn.to/2MjbJHN) Samsun Q2U (https://amzn.to/2FIrarK) DBX-286s (https://amzn.to/2T3jRi7) FocusRite 2i2 (https://amzn.to/2T3k7xB) SoundDevices MixPre-3 (https://amzn.to/2VYap1v) Producer's Choice Sound Blankets (http://vocalboothtogo.com) Post Production Less is often more in post production, but it is critical get the volume of your sound to match everyone else's. The easiest way is to run your final mix trough the free software Auphonic (http://auphonic.com) or if you're using Adobe Audtion, use it's match loudness feature. If you have background noise to cleanup, the absolute best is iZotope RX (https://www.izotope.com/en/products/repair-and-edit/rx.html). Special Guests: Curtis Judd and Ray Ortega.

In Episode 3 of Brand on Broadcasting with Ross Brand, I talk about audio interfaces, what they do and why they are important to the quality of your audio when recording in a computer or streaming to the internet. I also discuss Sound Devices' MixPre-3, an audio interface, mixer and recorder. What makes it unique vs competing products is not only the outstanding quality of its Kashmir preamps, but its ability to serve as both a recorder and audio interface at the same time. We wish a very happy 20th anniversary to the team at Sound Devices, a company with a great reputation for making high-quality audio products. I look forward to checking out more gear from Sound Devices at Podcast Movement in Philadelphia later this month. This review of the MixPre-6 by Daniel J. Lewis is very thorough. Sound Devices actually made an update to fix the issue causing one of Daniel's few criticisms in the otherwise strongly favorable review. Parts of this episode were recorded live on Facebook Live late at night on July 13, 2018 and early in the morning on July 14, 2018.

See http://thepodcastersstudio.com/102 for complete links and video! Do you have more noise in your podcast audio than you'd like? Do you know what is causing that noise? Is it your mic? How about your studio or maybe it's your preamp...if you use one. I'm talking with Julian Krause all about the latter but of course we dive into many related topics surrounding preamps and noise, including: How to test a preamp for noise or find out what its noise floor measurement is. How the noise you're hearing might be coming from your mic (if it's a condenser) before it comes from your preamp. Dynamic vs condensor microphones. Several audio recorders to include the Mixpre, Zoom H5, H4n and H4n Pro, Zoom f8 and more. Microphone impedance and some of the standard mics you may have used or are currently using. And how the device Julian made works for testing a preamp and how to make one of your own. Comparing preamps to other preamps in terms of noise floor specs. And how not to test a preamp. Measuring noise levels (of a preamp) in software. Using low cut filters during recording vs post production. Gain staging—how to get the most out the device you're using cause the noise floor exists regardless of your recording level. Can you simply lower your level to lower the noise? Not really. You'll end up needing to boost levels in post production and the noise will then be audible because it was always there; you just couldn't hear it in your headphones while recording at lower levels. I recap my experience at NAB last week, including our Mic Test Drive Booth and lots more including: BIG thanks to my booth brothers: Michael Helms, Josh Wade, and Landen Hardy! Our 10 mics, Mackie 1642VLZ4, MixPre-6 borrowed from Sound Devices, and a BP40 borrowed from Steve Savanyu at Audio-Technica. Sennheiser’s upcoming wireless clip on mic, and the Neumann U67 at their booth! My birthday gift - a Neewer mini microphone! Watch Bandrew Scott's video on this mic here. The Venue was HUGE - Las Vegas Convention Center. Booth traffic was OK. And I was interviewed twice - one audio and one video. I also mentioned my drive out there - TO Vegas via New Mexico and Arizona, FROM Vegas via Utah and Colorado. And it was great to hang out with: Rob Walch - Libsyn Todd Cochrane, Mike Dell, MacKenzie - Blubrry Jennifer Crawford and Vernon Ross - Podbean Rob Greenlee - Voxnest Eric Larsen - Tascam Sean and Ira - Samson Podfest guys - Chris Krimitsos, John Dennis Podcast Movement guys - Jared Easley, Dan Franks Allan Tepper Emma Victoria Austin Dillman - REV Angela Copeland Other stuff: Skype Has a Big Announcement for Content Creators: Skype was proud to announce the new Skype for Content Creators, which looks to be what podcasters have been asking for, for years. The new feature is available in preview form now (at NAB) and should be widely available in the summer for both Mac and Windows 10 users. Skype for Content Creators records calls directly through NDI-capable software like Wirecast, Xsplit, and Vmix. The feature provides "clean" copies of all call participants that you can quickly drop into audio and video production apps, so you can focus more on the content and publishing of your show, and less on double-checking everyone's recordings. I detail how I mixed an episode using the wrong Sonarworks profile, and then had to correct it. Because I had already done many edits, it wasn’t an option to go back to the mix and adjust the individual tracks. Lastly: Congrats to the current students enrolled in PES! Next semester starts June 26th and super-early-bird pricing still available. DID YOU KNOW........We exist for the purpose of helping you, so please comment below with any questions or remarks. My guest is Paul Isaacs, Director of Product Management and Design at Sound Devices. We discussed the MixPre-6 in lots of detail, and also covered a lot of other audio topics. In the right circumstances, the MixPre-6 could be a really valuable piece of gear for podcasters. It's a high quality recorder, interface and mixer. The microphone preamps are super-high quality. I was able to try the unit courtesy of Sound Devices, but you won't hear that episode session for a couple weeks. Thank you for being so helpful, Paul! Full show notes can be seen at www.schoolofpodcasting.com/580 Why Keeping It Simple is a Good idea I do a show every Saturday call Ask the Podcast Coach with Jim Collison from theaverageguy.tv and at one point I decided to connect with Jim over Google hangouts, as well as have a Call In Number for the phone. I had to send a mix to Jim that had myself and the caller (but not Jim) while sending a mix to the caller than had myself and Jim (but not the caller). For those up on the lingo, I had to configure two mix minuses. I needed a mixer with two auxiliary outs. I found the Behringer X1832. It did the job well. I had a ton of extra channels, and effects that I never used. Then we switched and instead of using a phone (using CallinStudio.com) we went to a chat window to take questions. This was simple and free (using chatwing.com) . So now I have a giant mixer taking up half my desk, and I was looking for an alternative. I have a Yamaha MG102c Mixer (which has been replaced by the MG10XU) that would do the job. For whatever reason, I just didn't like it. It seemed like I had to crank everything up to the max. It still had a clean sound, but it seemed like I really had to push everything. I realize this is stupid (cause you should vote with your ears, not your eyes) but I've been hesitant to go back to it. The Other Problem with Recording Levels I use a Zoom H5. A great device with a giant screen. However, due to the way the studio is setup with the majority of the light coming in from Behind the Zoom H5 I cant' really get a clear reading. While there are lights to let me know when things are peaking, I tend to feel those are too sensitive. Then I heard about the Sound Devices MixPre-3. This might solve all my problems. Bad Time for a Product Review I received the Sound Devices MixPre-3 this week. It's horrible timing as I'm getting ready to run off to Podcast Movement, and I'm busy packing, buying Dramamine, recording podcasts and won't have time to do a super deep dive. So here is what I want it to do: Power my Electrovocie RE320 without a ton of his I want to do a mix minus for when I do shows with a co-host via skype or Google hangouts I want to plugin my ipad to play sound effects. First Impressions Of the Mix Pre-3 WOW IS THIS THING SMALL. I have an iPhone 6s, and it might be an inch wider, but it is the size of an iPhone on steroids. VERY COOL. At first, I was worried about the touchscreen display. But the display is super clear, and you can adjust the brightness. I had no problems reading it. I was worried about the touchscreen is small. That didn't seem to be an issue (I'm a guitar player with long fingers and not very fat). I almost didn't need the manual. I plugged in a microphone, hit record and was up and running. Using it as an Interface - WHY AM I DRUNK? I went into Hindenburg Journalist and did a recording. it was nice and clear, but I sounded slightly drunk as my voice was lower (as if the sound had been slowed down). I launched Adobe Audition and got the same issue. Hmmm. As I'm on a PC, I right-clicked on the Speaker in the bottom right-hand corner of my screen and went to the Properties of the Mix Pre-3. I had to set the recording and playback to 2 channel 24 bit, 48K. This solved the issue, and everything sounded fine. How Do I Setup a Mix Minus? I was able to set the input of Channel 2 to USB-1, and I could now hear my Skype caller. I was on Channel 3, and life was good. How do I go about making sure that the sound of the caller does not go back to the caller? I look at the output, and all the output routing is for the stereo out mix. Where do I adjust what goes back to the caller? I looked, and looked, and headed to YouTube. They have a video on the Sound Devices website, but they just said, "Set the input and out to the MixPre-3. My thought was, Yeah, but then what. Finally, I saw a video that explained you can't route what is going back to the USB output, and that you don't need to setup a mix minus, as IT JUST DOES IT. Well, that's cool. I'm definitely stopping by their booth at Podcast Movement and asking some questions about this as (and this is important) I'm not sure I'm 100% right on that. If I wanted to use the Stereo Output jack into another USB device (in my case I use a Griffin imic) than I could get into more advanced setups. What Would I Fix About it? The On/Off switch is placed in a not so great spot, but then again because this thing is so tiny, any place you put the switch it's going to be right on top of something. It seems like having the SD card behind the battery pack is a bad idea. However, when I push a button and turn on file transfer, it was super fast to copy the files from the device to my computer. I originally was somewhat bummed that it doesn't have a "Marker" feature, but using the wingman app (free) I can lookup and see what time the boo-boo happened and make a mental note. Not as cool as a marker (especially if you wanted to pass your audio to someone else), but it's a hack for the lack of marker. While I would almost always be using USB to power the unit, I think charging $40 for an AC power adapter (not included) is BS. If they didn't have the wingman app (which is very cool) trying to rename something would be a joke. I love that I downloaded the app, and it just connected. So the short answer of what would I change? - Not almost nothing. What About the Price? The price for the unit Pre-3 Unit is $699, the Pre-6 is $899, and the price of the adapter (AC) is $40. Sound Devices MixPre-3 Audio Recorder/Mixer and USB Audio Interface Sound Devices MixPre-6 Audio Recorder/Mixer and USB Audio Interface Sound Devices MX-Charge AC Power Supply for MixPre-3 and MixPre-6 Who Should Buy This? Someone who is going to be traveling alot, and wants to create great audio without having to worry (too much) about breaking the unit. The person wouldn't use the built-in microphones of a Zoom H5, and will always be traveling with a mic to record, and headphones to listen. Someone who has a small space, and they don't want their kids messing with a mixer. These units allow you to create presets, so you can fire up the unit press a button and everything is set. Also, it is super easy to plug stuff in. The person who understands that any tweaking of sound (more bass, treble,) will be done later in post production (where a mixer allows you to add it while you record) Fun Things To Check Out Mike Russel's YouTube Channel (AMAZING ADOBE AUDITION TUTORIALS Answer the Public - Interesting keyword/question tool (don't use the visualization view) Zoom H6 Course - Want to get the most out of your H6? Check out this course from my friend Daniel J. Lewis This video show an insane test on which device has the best preamps
