What a week of football this has been and we bring you as much chat about it as we can cram into two and a half hours! We start things off by looking back at Canada's historic Nations League victory against the US on Tuesday, as we hear from a cock-a-hoop Canadian head coach John Herdman and chat about how the loss went down among a number of the US media. Turning our attention to MLS, we look back at the initial roster moves made by Vancouver Whitecaps this past week and what that may mean for the future look of the squad, and we delve into a truly fantastic weekend of MLS playoff action with Philly.com's Jonathan Tannenwald. It's been a busy week in the CPL as well. As the first ever regular season wraps up, we hear from caretaker Pacific FC head coach James Merriman about the end to their season and sit down for a chat with Pacific co-owner Rob Friend about the club's decision to sack head coach Michael Silberbauer and what the ideal future looks like for the club. All this plus Scott Sutter talks TV, Vanilla Muffins are back in Wavelength, 13 Tombs continue as our artists of the month for October, and there's BC Soccerweb headlines. Corey Basso & Colin Miller break down the Whitecaps 1-all draw versus the Columbus Crew at BC Place, plus post game comments from Andy Rose, Scott Sutter and Marc Dos Santos.
They've only been and gone and done it. Vancouver Whitecaps won a match! Okay, so it wasn't pretty and it was against a shambles of a team, but a win is a win is a win and right now any small victories they can get should be grabbed with both hands. We look at the main talking points coming out of the victory over FC Cincinnati and the big news in Whitecapsland and throughout MLS this week. From transfers to games to suspensions and failed drug tests, there's been a lot to chat about. Keeping with Canadian club football, we chat with Cavalry FC head coach Tommy Wheeldon about their league season so far, what's made them the class of the CPL, and the need to keep it going to the championship game. Plus we look at what the future of club football in BC may look like. We also delve into the world of football board games as we chat with Marty Neill, one of the men behind the reboot of the classic board/computer game hybrid Football Fortunes, and we reveal our plans for AFTN's new video channel. All this plus Wavelength, BC Soccerweb headlines, and fun food segments with Max Crepeau, Felipe Martins, and Scott Sutter. This show has strong language throughout and humour that may offend. Whitecaps defender Scott Sutter previews the Canadian Championship 2nd leg vs Cavalry FC & looks at the club's current 5-match losing skid.
Guests include Scott Sutter of the Whitecaps.
Another busy week is in the book and it was a rare winning one for Vancouver Whitecaps. At least on the pitch. Thankfully the 'Caps didn't have to send out any Mayday cries for help from Colorado, although they were made to work hard in their 2-1 win over the Rapids. We look back at that match, the main talking points coming out of it for the team and individual players, and have a quick look ahead to Portland coming to town on Friday night. We also catch up with Whitecaps right back Scott Sutter who took in Pacific FC's first ever match last weekend. We get his thoughts on the CPL, his friendships with Pacific head coach Michael Silberbauer and co-owner Josh Simpson, and chat about his own coaching plans and how it's making him look at games a little bit differently. We also look at the continuing scandals surround the Whitecaps off the pitch, plus we continue our 1979 NASL Soccer Bowl celebrations, look at the annoyance that was VAR in MLS this week, and Football Violence Awareness Month wraps up with The Men They Couldn't Hang in our latest Wavelength section. It was all looking fairly good at half time, penalty horrorshow aside. It was looking like the Lion Ibrahimovic was sleeping tonight, with Doneil Henry as the Lion tamer. Then it all went horribly long, Vancouver Whitecaps looked a disorganised and dysfunctional mess, and another loss was handed out following another blank at home. We look back at the good, the bad, and the ugly from the loss to LA, hear from both head coaches, chat with Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and ponder where the 'Caps go from here. Plus we look at the weekend's action in the MLS West, talk CPL jerseys and football clichés, continue our 1979 NASL Soccer Bowl celebrations, find out if Scott Sutter fancies a chocolate digestive, and The Business are back again in this week's Wavelength. Here's the rundown for the main segments from the episode:03.21: Vancouver Whitecaps v LA Galaxy analysis29.45: Coaches audio - Marc Dos Santos and Guillermo Barros Schelotto36.39: More Whitecaps v Sounders chat44.35: Zlatan Ibrahimovic audio and discussion58.31: 1979 NASL Soccer Bowl celebrations continue64.13: Football clichés73.15: Anyone Fancy A Chocolate Digestive - Scott Sutter78.20: MLS West Week in Review89.23: Canadian Premier League jersey launch102.36: Wavelength - The Business - Hardcore Hooligan [Explicit Lyrics]106.29: BC Soccerweb Headlines - football news from around the world including the continuing Whitecaps women's team abuse scandal

New VWFC signings Scott Sutter & Andy Rose joined live from Hawaii to discuss their journey to Vancouver and look at the current state of MLS!
It's all about the Three I's for Vancouver Whitecaps right now - improvement, intensity, and integration. Phase Two of the Whitecaps' preseason training camp is underway in Hawaii. A snafu seems to have seen our flight tickets lost in the post, so we're stuck in chilly Vancouver, but we'll make the most of it and try and warm everyone's cockles with another packed episode of the AFTN Soccer Show. It's been another week of coming and goings in Whitecapsland and we look at it all, plus we get the thoughts of 'Caps coach Marc Dos Santos on the signing of Hwang In-beom and Scott Sutter, what they mean to the team and the battle for the right back position, the intensity of preseason training so far, and how he's integrating the young Whitecaps players into the first team squad. We also catch up with new addition Scott Sutter about his move from Orlando, his experience he brings to the group, the right back battle ahead, and what he's made of MLS so far. In our feature interview week, we sit down with new Whitecaps U23 head coach Nick Dasovic for a lengthy chat about the development squad, why it's important to the club, where it fits into the local footballing seen, and how he sees it as an opportunity to develop the guys as both players and people. It's a fantastic chat that will leave you enthused about both the team and the man leading it. All this, plus the MLS and CPL News of the Week, and The Macc Lads are this week's Wavelength band. Here's the rundown for the main segments from the episode:10.02: Hwang In-beom officially signed - the thoughts of Marc Dos Santos and ourselves22.35: Scott Sutter interview and right back discussion43.35: Competition for places chat including MDS audio51.18: Integrating young players with more MDS audio57.39: Nick Dasovic Whitecaps development team interview and discussion94.32: MLS News of the Week108.49: Wavelength - The Macc Lads - Don't Fear the Sweeper113.20: BC Soccerweb headlines - football news from around the world
A draw isn’t a win but it’s better than a loss, and when you get the tying goal in stoppage time, you kind of have to be happy with it. Such was the fate of Orlando City on Saturday night against the Philadelphia Union when Scott Sutter’s strike pulled a point out of thin air after a good first half but yet another lackluster second. We’re talking about the match and it’s a lot nicer to talk about a draw than a loss. Thad Bell, the manager of The Blue Testament then joins us to look ahead to Saturday’s showdown with Sporting Kansas City. Dom Dwyer will be making his return to the Blue Hell for the first time since being traded to Orlando and the Lions will have to beat a good Western Conference side on the road to snap the current interminable skid. Thad gives us the lowdown on the competition from SKC. Our weekly mailbag questions kick off the final segment, we discuss the upcoming Orlando Pride NWSL season finale and the USWNT’s first ever meeting with Chile, and we provide our key match-ups and score predictions for the Lions against the Sporks. If there’s something you want us to address on our next show, just ask by tweeting it to us @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC. Here’s how show No. 141 unspooled: 0:12 - An actual point to discuss, with multiple goals and everything. It feels...weird but oh so right. 21:52 - Thad Bell ruminates on Dom’s return to KC and what we can expect on Saturday night. 40:11 - Mailbag time, plus the Pride close out the season at Sky Blue, the USWNT dismantles Chile, and our predictions for Saturday night. Scott Sutter scored his third goal of the season and second to save a result for Orlando. The Lions didn't lose, but how confident are we in positive change going forward? Plus a look ahead to the match with Sporting Kansas City and a discussion on furries.
Just when it looked like Atlanta United and Josef Martinez would wilt in the hot, humid conditions of Orlando, Tata Martino’s men produced a moment of magic to find the winning goal. Of course, it was Josef Martinez on the end of it. And with that goal, Josef Martinez travels home as the highest-scoring player in a single season in MLS history. And, more importantly, with three points. Leandro Gonzalez Pirez opened the scoring in the twenty-first minute, somehow managing the bungle the ball across the line after Orlando City goalkeeper Joe Bendik spilled a free kick from Ezequiel Barco in front of goal. It was an apt reward for a player who just became a father only days ago. Following the goal, things slowed down quite a bit, and Orland was able to capitalize through—of all people—right back Scott Sutter. The defneder found himself on the end of a bouncing ball near the corner of the box and unleashed a vicious strike past Brad Guzan. The goal gave Orlando a foothold in the game, and the home side defended mightily deep into the game. Utilizing a very low block Atlanta’s Venezuelan striker didn’t have much room to operate, until he did. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

SoccerCast attends the first day of City's preseason training and catches up with Scott Sutter.
Alex and Logan discuss Scott Sutter's dramatic equalizer, update their awards to the midseason point, and look ahead to Chicago round 2.
Let’s skip all the nonsense about winless streaks and just get to the good stuff right up front: Scott Sutter interview! The veteran Swiss-English defender was kind enough to stop by to chat with us about his transition to MLS, how he’s dealing with the team’s current run of form, mentoring young players, dealing with the Florida heat, and plenty more. Sure, we’ve got to talk about the club’s MLS, NWSL, and USL losses on Saturday night. But if you didn’t go through a few losses and suffer a little adversity, the wins wouldn’t taste as sweet, now, would they? OK, maybe we’d like to find out if that’s true. Anyway, let’s just say that we could use a change of fortunes. We’re also previewing D.C. United and the Chicago Fire. The Pride are finally coming home. OCB finally has a somewhat normal schedule. Things could be starting to turn around. Whether they do or not, we’ll be here to yammer about it. Here’s how the pod unfolded: 0:12- Orlando City lost to ex-coach Adrian Heath despite the absence of Kevin Molino. We might as well talk about it. Was it a deserved result? Does ‘deserve’ have anything to do with soccer? Maybe not. Let’s move on. 26:25- The Pride scored first but gave up two straight to fall on the road against Sky Blue FC. But at least they get to play some home games soon. 32:40- OCB took a page out of the Pride’s book by scoring first and having the points slip away. 37:55- Scott Sutter likes to golf in his spare time, so he certainly came to the right place. Enjoy this informal chat with Orlando City’s right back. 52:32- Let’s talk about D.C. United and the Chicago Fire, including key match-ups and predictions. Got a question?
