He singlehandedly brought Canadian Whisky to the attention of Canada and The World. His latest book is the updated and expanded third edition of Canadian Whisky - The Essential Portable Expert. I love the first line. "Handles, mickeys, shots or drams, no matter what its measure, Canadian whisky is a story of Canada." Davin is my ultimate connection to the world of Canadian Whisky. He helped create these awards and leads the judging team. Grant Stevely - Distiller at DubhGlas (Oliver) In the fall of 2010, Grant purchased some property at Gallagher Lake near Oliver, B.C. “I wanted to build a distillery from the ground up, which is distinctly different from a lot of other distilleries,” he says. “So we built the distillery with expansion in mind.” Grant Stevely[/caption] At the heart of the operation is a German-made Arnold Holstein still. No sooner did Stevely open Dubh Glas Distillery in the spring of 2015, when he began winning awards for his first product, Noteworthy Gin. “Dubh Glas” is Scottish Gaelic for “from the dark water.” It's pronounced “Douglas,” which happens to be Stevely's middle name. Jason MacIsaac - Distiller. Sheringham (Langford, BC) Sheringham Distillery won Best Contemporary Gin at the 2019 World Gin Awards Its Seaside Gin captured the award against World-class competition from 23 countries, including the UK and USA. "We created Sheringham because we saw a hole in the market: the opportunity to create the world's most drinkable spirits. This approach has served us well, and in the seven years since founding Sheringham, we have been on the ground building authentic connections with buyers, retailers, and consumers, sharing our story and highlighting our chef-driven approach to innovation and quality." (Distiller Mag) Jason and wife Alayne now have their growing portfolio available across Canada and in 15 markets in the USA. Graeme Macaloney - Master Distiller Macaloney Island Distillery (Saanich) There once was a wee Scottish lad by the name of Graeme Macaloney who found a summer job bottling whisky and fell in love with Uisge Beatha, the ‘water of life'. He dedicated his heart to finding a way to make whisky for a living. Graeme set up shop on Saanich, just outside Victoria. Some of his favourite Scottish and Irish whiskies were island-made. Graeme has found his "island" in Canada. Congratulations Champ!! - Distillery opened in 2016 - The first whisky made onsite and released in 2020 -Canadian Whisky of the Year - 2025 Brennan Colebank - Master Distiller Stillhead Distillery (Duncan) Founded by the Colebank family, Stillhead Distillery Inc. opened its doors in October of 2017. After working 15 years in the tech industry, Master Distiller Brennan Colebank left his job to pursue his dream career, blending the two things he loved most: chemistry and spirits. The chemist has created an amazing portfolio and a home for Whisky in the Cowichan Valley. www.victoriawhiskyfestival.com www.canadianwhiskyawards.com

Tasting Notes: Drawn from the same stocks as the much allocated Caribou Crossing, a true HIDDEN GEM is Sazerac's Rich and Rare Reserve. It's priced like bottom shelf, but it's one of the BEST Canadian blends out there and for $12.99 a bottle it's a completely under the radar blend. Even up against Crown or Canadian Club this vanilla and oak rich whiskey exudes character and stands up to it's more premium brothers. Next time you have a Caribou Crossing on hand do the Pepsi challenge yourself and you'll see what I'm talking about. We've always loved blended Canadian whiskies for their drinkability and dollar to flavor value ratio, but try it for yourself.

“Friendship is like Whisky – the older the better” Yes, my friends, it's our annual trek to Victoria's inner harbour for the 18th annual Victoria Whisky Festival and the Canadian Whisky Awards. It was the founder of the awards Davin de Kergomeaux who whispered in my ear wondering why I wasn't attending or tasting or writing about his Whisky Awards. On second thought I think the voice in my ear was me saying “How could you possibly miss this?” just after I had missed the events about 6-7 years ago. I knew almost nothing about Whisky but my thinking was the same as wine – 17 years ago – every interview is going to be a master class. Pay attention and you could learn all about wine and pass it on to the listeners. I'm pleased to welcome to Tasting Room Radio – Davin de Kergommeaux – founder of the Canadian Whisky Awards. The Canadian Whisky Awards, held annually with the Victoria Whisky Festival, is the first and only competition dedicated solely to Canadian Whisky. The Awards have become the first stop for whisky producers, distributors, retailers and fans looking for the very best Canadian whiskies. Davin is the world's leading authority on Canadian Whisky. He also has three books available on Canadian Whisky with a fourth coming in March! Davin assembled 10 judges and sent them nearly 200 competing whiskies to blind taste. Davin announces the winner in his interview. We talk to the winners next week. www.canadianwhiskyawards.com www.canadianwhisky.org [caption id="attachment_28306" align="alignnone" width="800"] Graeme Macaloney[/caption] Dr. Graeme Macaloney PEng, PhD. – Macaloney's Island Distillery (Saanich) Proud owner of 5 world whisky awards including World best Potstill – Kildara. Tasting Notes: I'll admit it...I LOVE Canadian whisky, always have. I love Canadian Club, regular Crown, and all its derivatives. I love Gibson's, Forty Creek, and JP Wisers. I LOVE the use of bourbon grains distilled to a higher level, and then aged in used barrels. I've always thought Canadian whisky from top to bottom post 1990 was underrated in terms of flavor and appreciation. Because Crown and CC dominate the category it's easy to overlook brands like Rich & Rare and Pendleton's but I think people should start opening their eyes and palates. Today I'm taking a look at standard Pendleton. This is a Canadian whisky cut with Mt. Hood Water and bottled in Oregon to commemorate the Pendleton Round-Up a historic rodeo that lends its western bona fides to this liquid from the north. And though this brand has jumped around in ownership a few times, it has finally landed with some marketing dollars to spare at Proximo. Good thing too, because it's high time some marketers reinvented this amazing and sleepy category. On the nose, Pendleton is soft and sweet with vanilla and freshly cut oak, just like a Canadian should be, but on the palate it saunters forth, exhibiting fruit, spice, maple frosting, and a long caramelly finish. It's not as grapey as Crown or as fruity as CC but manages to blend both perfectly well with an extra cut of soft oak to round things out.
Downtown Portland's Driftwood Room has been shaking up craft cocktails and intimate, dimly lit hotel bar connections since opening in what was then Hotel Mallory (and today Hotel DeLuxe) in 1954. Once a pioneer of the city's mixology scene, today it remains a beloved, luxurious, unctuous, and, as we can now attest, potent purveyor of spirits. Yes, we had an AWESOME time at Driftwood Room…and then proceeded to continue having an even awesomer time with overflowing glasses of Canadian Club at the HBTG studio over the course of a jaunty, increasingly slurry, and eventually unintelligible mess of an initial recording. We just plain kicked the shit out of it folks. And, after listening to the end result, decided the only way forward was the unprecedented choice to re-record the back half of the episode six days later. We had too much respect for the bar, this project, and, hell, maybe even ourselves(?!) not to take that mulligan. Unorthodox, yes, but without a doubt, a better product. So here's to Driftwood Room, Downtown Portland, and hotel bar frequenters everywhere…this episode (and its many MANY drinks) are for you. Bar visit and initial recording: Thursday, July 20, 2023 Partially re-recorded: Wednesday, July 26, 2023 HBTG theme song: "Frozen Egg" by Lame Drivers Interlude music: "Right Track" by Lame Drivers --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/historybytheglass/message

Join us at our YouTube channel to join in LIVE for upcoming author interviews! https://tinyurl.com/dabbleyoutube A young woman trapped in a deeply dysfunctional family in the seedy wilds of 1990s South Florida has to make a choice—save her family, or save herself—in this larger-than-life debut novel from the acclaimed author of Lay the Favorite (a memoir about Raymer's years in Las Vegas and her work in the sports betting industry, which was made into a feature film directed by Stephen Frears and starring Rebecca Hall and Bruce Willis). In Beth Raymer's FIREWORKS EVERY NIGHT (Random House, on-sale 6/27) we meet twelve-year-old CC (named after her father's beloved Canadian Club whiskey), an unforgettable protagonist who narrates her life story with dark comedy and compassion for her family, even as her parents “opt out of parenthood” as well as society. CC's father is a born grifter, a used-car salesman who burns down his dealership in southern Ohio for enough insurance money to set up a life for himself, his wife, and his two young daughters in a place he picks largely at random, because the living seems easy. CC's mother is thirty-five going on seventeen, a housewife who just wants to drive a Mustang and hang out at the mall. CC's big sister Lorraine goes from loving Debbie Gibson and jelly shoes to having a full-on drug addiction and listening only to heavy metal, after enduring forms of abuse within her family. In the midst of this dysfunction, CC is trying to stay afloat and make it out—to achieve some semblance of a stable life while coming up against the structural and cultural challenges of growing up in poverty. While a work of fiction, Raymer's novel is very much drawn from real life. Hers is a unique voice telling a story with a lot of darkness, but also with incredibly comedy, compassion, and heart. For even as CC is a young woman failed by most of those around her, she still is a character determined to succeed, and one who refuses to disavow the place and people she came from. And while her story is harrowing, I think you will also find it surprisingly poignant.

Who needs Steve's peaty, smoky whisky this week when Canada is supplying a surplus for half the nation? (But it ain't Canadian Club they're serving.) After clearing the smoke from our eyes—and our whisky glasses, we get down to business on what is known so far about the Trump indictment (we recorded before the full details of the indictment were released), and wonder if the Dept. of Justice isn't blowing a lot of smoke. And just how did the Supreme Court manage to botch the Voting Rights Act case? Finally, we begin rolling out our listener-requested Essential Reading List, starting with a couple titles for the category of philosophy. Naturally Steve and Lucretia divide on a title to recommend. Instead of pitching creative to executives in boardrooms, we were pitching ours to strangers on the internet...Studio 718 wan't quite as glamorous as Studio 54 - email samples, overzealous Facebook groups, and "BFCM" template packs defined our glory. But chicken tacos, Canadian Club, and Mad Men made life worth living. The truth is when you're just starting out, you'll do almost anything to mask the desperation. After all, maybe we were just one email away...

Bigger isn't necessarily better, and we have proof of that this week with our podcast recorded on location at the New Brunswick Spirits Festival in Fredericton, New Brunswick. The festival punches well above its weight class to deliver an outstanding event every year, and celebrated its 25th anniversary this weekend. We'll talk with founder and chairman Frank Scott to find out his secrets for success on WhiskyCast In-Depth, and we'll also catch up with another old friend. Martine Nouet has been organizing the festival's food and whisky lunches for years, but is scaling back her whisky work to pursue other passions. In the news, Diageo's venture capital unit has taken a stake in England's Oxford Artisan Distillery, while Canadian Club is out with another record-setting vintage whisky. Finally, Corby's Dr. Don Livermore has coined a new word for whisky lovers, and he'll share it with us on Behind the Label.

Crown Royal!NoseHas the distinct crown smellAspartamePeach ringsPeach schnappsTasteVery sweetTea like sweetnessReal peach flavorNot artificialThe peach is not overpowering compared to the other crown flavorsFinishThe peach and the alcohol mix, leaving an unpleasant mix.The crown comes out ahead in the battle for flavorFinal thoughtsCrown Royal peach follows the tradition of a sweet canadian whiskey. The most surprising thing though is the flavoring process. Because there isnt any artificial flavors, you get the sweetness of a real peach. The peach juice used is very prominent on the nose, but it falls short in the flavor. It is definitely there, but unfortunately even lowering their proof to 70 wasn't enough. The peach is strong enough that this would make for an amazing mixer. Putting this with tea or lemonade would make a perfect summertime drink, that would be fitting along any lake or ocean.Intro: Crown Royal Peach came in 3rd for the best flavored whiskey that Crown produces. It was beat out by Vanilla (#2) and Apple (#1Canadian whiskey has gotten a bad rep for adding juice or artificial flavors to their finished product. It got started when they were allowed to mix American whiskey in with the barrels when they would bring barrels into the USHowever they did this to get a tax breakwould make more sense as to why Canadian Club started out as an American whiskey and then moved up (that and given prohibition) Crown Royal's flavored whiskey line up has always been super strong when it comes to the flavoringthis may not be the case, but might be partial truth. According to the Canadian whiskey playbook, if a whiskey contains additional flavoring spirit, that spirit must age for at least two years in wood.Seldomly exercised rule thoughall ingredients going into Canadian whiskey are distilled, barrelled, and aged separately. This is why most believe Canadian whiskey is not only the most friendly whiskey, but also why it is so sweet. What we have not talked about is the 9.09% rule that Canadian whiskey has.Master blenders are allowed to add up to 9.09% of flavoring spirit or flavoring to their blend. This started out as a way to allow for Canadian whiskey to get some tax breaks when shipping into America, but has turned into an art that most master blenders use
