When most confessional Protestants are preparing for end-of-calendar-year holidays, they are likely thinking about Lutheran seminary education. For that reason, this discussion with co-hosts Korey Maas (Lutheran), Miles Smith (Anglican), and D. G. Hart (Presbyterian) will be a treat. The basis for discussion is an article that Korey Maas wrote for the Acton Institute publication, Religion and Liberty, on the late 1960s controversy at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis which led to the exodus of confessionally liberal Lutherans not only from the seminary but also from the LCMS altogether. Among the points of controversy was the doctrine of inerrancy, which gave the conflict a certain resemblance to the Presbyterian controversy of the 1920s. Spoiler alert: the co-hosts never mention beer and only bring up Presbyterianism at the end of the episode. So you have to listen to the end (at least it's not behind a paywall). The article by Korey Maas who is still not on Twitter (formerly called Twitter) is here. The LCMS statement on the authority and infallibility of the Bible is here. Miles Smith is still @ivmiles and D. G. Hart is still @oldlife. As is always the case, the pudcast would not exist without the incomparable assistance of @presbycast.

Hello and welcome to Dragonfly Tales a story podcast with Emily and Leo.Welcome, one and all to the Merry Merry month of May! May day is a really lovely time of year – we celebrate the beginning of summer, which in the Celtic wheel is called Bealtaine. (which is actually Gaelic for the month of May) The earth is tilting towards the sun here in the northern hemisphere and the warm season is coming. If the sun were a few degrees nearer we would burn up. And if the sun were a few degrees farther away all life on earth would be frozen. But the position of our sun is 'just right', just like baby bear's porridge. And it's called - the Goldilocks Zone. Stories are indeed everywhere. You can find out more about the Goldilocks Zone Here. For our story, we return to ancient Greece and Perseus' quest for the head of Medusa, the gorgon. Will he succeed, or be turned to stone?? You can find out more about Perseus and Medusa HERE.If you would like a shout out, the best thing to do is join the Dragonfly Tales story chat on Facebook. Welcome to the remastered edition of Episode 4 of Holly Jolly X'masu! In this episode, I discuss the granddaddy of all Japanese Christmas compilation albums: King Records' “Merry, Merry X'mas,” from 1963. This revered classic really established the gold standard for Christmas compilations in Japan. I considered redoing the whole episode, but due to time constraints, that wasn't plausible. Instead, I redid my introduction and included the full songs from my recently-obtained vinyl copy of the album. You can't imagine how thrilled I was to finally get this. I'd bid on it several times before but dropped out when bidding got over $50. I paid far less than that for the copy I finally won. The cover isn't in great shape, there's no obi, and the record is extremely warped, but it plays beautifully, which is the most important thing. I've also managed to get two of the singles that were included on the album. I have “Silent Night” by Yasuo Tanabe and Michiyo Azusa, and the Peanuts' “Jingle Bells.” I also managed to get the “Merry X'mas” flexi-disc journal featuring the Peanuts and Hajime Hara & Crazy Cats. It's one of the more sought-after flexi-disc journals, so I was lucky to get a copy. I don't have Yukari Ito's Christmas EP yet, but it goes for almost as much as the album. As far as I can tell, the other songs were never released as singles, although a couple show up on other later compilations. It was interesting redoing this episode. I've made a lot of changes to how I write and edit an episode, so it was a bit of a challenge readjusting. One big change I made was to take out the clip of “March on the River Kwai,” since I don't own a physical copy. I did find a couple copies for auction, and based on the starting bids, I don't think I ever will own a copy. I do have “Mothra's Song” on a CD, though, so I kept it in. I also got a kick out of looking back on how far I've come since this episode came out. A couple days before it was released, I had just ordered a copy of one of my first true Holy Grails, Jun Fukamachi's “Now Sound Christmas,” which brought my Japanese Christmas collection up to 40 whole items. Since then, I've managed to track down a lot of my most-wanted albums, and I'm to…well, a fair deal more than 40 LP's, CD's and singles. I'm also closing in on my 40th episode. Considering how much I struggled to get out one episode per month at first, I'm pretty pleased with how things are currently going. I hop you've enjoyed this refreshed and expanded episode. Join me here every Saturday this month for all new episodes, as well as a special bonus episode on New Year's Eve. I have a lot of great music lined up to help you enjoy your Christmas, most of which you can't hear anywhere else. As always, any feedback on this episode would be appreciated. If have any suggestions, or if you'd like to recommend a song or album for a future episode, drop me a line and let me know. Remember, I've added a button to my Ko-fi page. If you'd like to support me one cup of coffee at a time, a donation is only $3. I've also opened a Redbubble store. I only have a couple designs up, but keep an eye on it as I'll be trying to add more. Any proceeds or donations received will be put towards purchasing new Japanese Christmas music to review for future episodes. You can also find me on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. And if you get a chance, leave me a review on iTunes. Thanks!

It's RJ's birthday week! And we didn't forget about birthday boy's choice this year! To celebrate, RJ lets Ian choose one of the songs (just like he did for them on his birthday in Episode 289), and he opts to finally add "Frosty the Snowman" (the original version by Gene Autry) to the list after all these years. For their choice, RJ selects the much more modern "Merry Merry" by The Bird and The Bee. RJ would like you all to know that Frosty's wife's name was Crystal, and the snow parson was animated using the magic of The Bible. This week's ranking music is the excellent synth solo from the aforementioned "Merry Merry."

What is it we do here at InObscuria? Every show Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection; an artist, album, or grouping of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. This week we stray a bit from our standard rigor because… well, because it’s the end of 2020 and we just feel like spreading some Christmas cheer in an otherwise gloomy year. Welcome to Episode 4 of Holly Jolly X'masu! In this episode, I discuss the granddaddy of all Japanese Christmas compilation albums: King Records’ “Merry, Merry X’mas,” from 1963. This revered classic really established the gold standard for Christmas compilations in Japan. Despite being a landmark album in Japan, it’s not well-known elsewhere. I happened upon an Ebay auction for it while looking for other albums that might interest me. It was in near mint (NM) condition and was listed for over $1100. I followed the auction just to see if it would actually sell for that much. I never found out because, after being relisted once, the seller closed the auction before it ended. However, during that initial auction, he sent me a private offer to buy it for “only” $1000. I thought he was nuts until I looked into it a little more and found that very good (VG) copies typically go for $700 or more. And that’s on the rare occasions when they actually come up for sale. Here’s the $1000 record: The CD is a little more affordable. It came out in 1991 and was packaged in an outer box/slipcase. I spent months trying to find one to no avail. The one I finally managed to get was listed in “acceptable” condition (that tends to be noticeably worse than VG) without the outer box. It was in better shape than I expected and plays fine. Just tonight, I finally found a couple listings for the CD with the box. They were both over $100, which made me feel better about how relatively inexpensive my CD was. The $20 CD: As excited as I was to review this album, I had an even harder time with this episode than the last one. We’ve been terribly busy lately so finding time to work on it was difficult. This morning, I woke up early and finally managed to get it recorded. The audio levels were fine, although there was a phantom popping sound running throughout the recording that I had to through and remove manually. After seven hours of recording and editing, I was down to adding in the last bit of music at the very end of the episode. That’s when Audacity crashed. I wasn’t worried at first because the same thing happened with the last episode. I was able to recover it then without much of a problem. This time was different. After six or seven restarts, it was clear I wasn’t going to get it back. I was certain I had lost the entire thing and would have to start from scratch. I took a break, copied all my data files to another computer, and after a couple of restarts it was able to recover it to the point that I had almost everything back. I had to edit a few songs back in, but a 10% loss is much better than a 100% loss. One thing I meant to point out last episode is that, with the exception of some special songs like “Mothra’s Song” and “March on the River Kwai,” all the incidental instrumental music I use in the podcast is also Japanese Christmas music. I try to pick something a little more obscure so it’s not readily obvious what’s playing. If you recognize one of the songs, drop me a line and I’ll mention you in an upcoming episode. Speaking of which, I’m going to try to get out a second episode this month. June 25th is Leon Day, which marks the halfway mark to and from Christmas. I’m already hard at work on the next episode, so hopefully it will be done by then. In the meantime, I’m always on the lookout for new music. I have some really great stuff lined up, and I’m hoping to add a couple other really great albums to my collection soon. Also, as mentioned in this episode, I’ve included the Japanese lyrics to “Santa Claus Is Comin’ To Town” below. Any feedback on this episode would be appreciated. If you’d like to recommend an album for a future episode, drop me a line and let me know. Remember, I've added a button to my Ko-fi page. If you'd like to support me one cup of coffee at a time, a donation is only $3. Any donations received will be put towards purchasing new Japanese Christmas music to review for future episodes. Thanks! *************************************************************** Santa Claus is Coming to Town Japanese lyrics by Kanbe Takao So Merry Christmas from you Merry Christmas from me Santa Claus is coming to town Hey! You will probably hear it The sound of bells will be there soon Santa Claus is coming to town For resting children unable to wait Surely bringing wonderful presents So Merry Christmas from you Merry Christmas from me Santa Claus is coming to town So Merry Christmas from you Merry Christmas from me Santa Claus is coming to town Hey! In today's episode I show you how you can create more meaning in your holidays and life. Perhaps for you the holidays are a time that doesn’t feel so holy or happy. I'll show you how you can change that immediately. The meanings we give our days, holidays, etc. are based on many different things. Would you be willing to look at your life as a whole, and then bring it back into today…whatever "today" represents for you? How would you like to define how YOU celebrate your holidays, days, YOU, and your life? Yes, it’s time for a REDEFINITION. How would you like to redefine how you’re living your life? Whatever you’ve been calling yourself, your days, your life…you get to decide. You can live a life — redefined — starting right now. As you’ve heard me say before, “If you can’t interpret it at least two different ways, it’s probably not true.” What interpretation would you give to your life if you looked at it from another perspective? Is there another way to look at your circumstances today, and call it what you like…love…something NEW? Perhaps it’s time to look at your year…redefined. Maybe it’s time to look at “Merry” redefined. “Happy” redefined. What are you willing to do today to redefine your life? Please grab your SACRED S.O.L. D.A.T.E. JOURNAL (Daily Action To Engage yourself.) TODAY’S SACRED S.O.L. STEP: What would you like to redefine in your life? Write it down. Write the new definition. Commit to it today. For those of you celebrating Christmas today…Merry Merry and Happy Happy. To all of you, as we’re preparing to enter into the New Year, let’s do so...REDEFINED. Thank you for being here, and allowing me to sip on life with you.
