Poly Styrene, otherwise known as Marianne Joan Elliott-Said was a British musician, a poet, singer-songwriter, and a pioneer in punk music. She is the first multiracial woman to lead a punk band, and continually dared herself to evolve as a musician and human being. About the Narrator Celeste Bell spent her earliest years living on a Hare Krishna commune in the Hertfordshire countryside with her mother, Poly Styrene. After completing her degree from Queen Mary University of London, Celeste settled in Madrid where she worked as a teacher and formed the ska-punk band, Debutant Disco. After finishing a Master's degree in Barcelona, Celeste returned to London to work alongside Zoë Howe on Day Glo! The Poly Styrene Story, published by Omnibus Press in 2019. They then joined forces with Paul Sng to make Poly Styrene: I Am a Cliché, a film to accompany the book. Celeste currently manages her mother's artistic estate, co-curating an exhibition alongside Mattie Loyce at the 198 Contemporary Arts and Learning Centre in Brixton. She plans to tour the exhibition internationally after the pandemic and is currently developing a new film project, with the working title of Mr. Gorbachev and the Krishna Kids.
Adam Hurrey, Charlie Eccleshare and David Walker entertain this month's listener entries for Mesut Haaland Dicks, as the Clichés faithful nominate their niche footballing fascinations and irritations. Among the selections are players whose name-based chants sound like they're being booed, the layout of seven-goal thrillers on score apps, the flimsy logic of “but they still had 11 internationals out there” and the unsatisfying spectacle of waiting for a ball to reach the edge of the D in 5-a-side. Meanwhile, the Adjudication Panel enjoy a superb tweet-and-blog salvo from Richard Keys. Today we have a special Thanksgiving edition of being thankful … and the sidekick energy of the Cliché of it all this time of year. We are diving into something that gets tossed around so much it starts losing its meaning: gratitude itself. The cliché of thankfulness. You know the one ... the forced positivity, the “be grateful because it's November,” the pressure to list ten things even if your heart isn't in it. And yet, here we are, sitting in this real, honest gratitude together. The kind that doesn't feel scripted or polished, the kind that actually matters. Let's go deeper. Let's talk about why gratitude gets so overused, why it feels hollow sometimes, and how we as witches can take this tired old cliché and breathe real magic back into it! We've got this!CharleneHearth & HenPatreonWitchy Work Wishes

Ryan Short — author of the new book The Civic Brand, and founder of place-branding firm Civic Brand — joins the show this week for a discussion on how cities can more meaningfully define their brand. The term has been used and overused in almost every industry imaginable, and yet, Ryan argues the importance of the idea at its root. Adam Hurrey, Charlie Eccleshare and David Walker entertain this month's listener entries for Mesut Haaland Dicks, as the Clichés faithful nominate their niche footballing fascinations and irritations. Among the selections are the egalitarian approach of football results shows, the psychological impact of the height of the main camera angle, that moment of uncertainty as a referee indicates a goal kick and not a penalty and one of the most nuanced observations on the language of football the pod has ever faced. Meanwhile, the Adjudication Panel enjoy an inevitable Sean Dyche moment and some curious Champions League commentary. Many believers rely on familiar phrases to express faith, but not all clichés align with biblical truth. This episode examines common sayings like "God works in mysterious ways," "Let go and let God," and "God will not give you more than you can handle." Pastor Caldwell urges listeners to move beyond shallow theology by testing every phrase against Scripture and embracing the richness of God's Word as the foundation of faith.

But first, they banish some bad writing habits, starting with your very first sentence… If you're bored of clichés or joyless jargon, this one is for you. We've all heard the clichés: focus on what you can control, embrace the pain not the suffering, fight for what you want. Easy to dismiss, right? But the truth is, those sayings stick around for a reason. They hold the kind of wisdom that can change how you approach life, work, and even setbacks. What often gets missed is that clichés aren't about perfection, they're about perspective. They remind you that regret comes from the chances you didn't take, that discipline lasts longer than motivation, and that consistency matters more than bursts of effort. It's not about chasing outcomes—it's about showing up, day after day, for the things that matter most. One question that flips the script: How do I minimize future regrets? Suddenly, clichés like “control what you can” or “give it your all” stop sounding tired and start feeling urgent. They're not just empty lines, they're the compass for your decisions. When you finally pay attention to the advice you've heard a thousand times, life feels lighter, setbacks feel smaller, and your goals feel closer. It's not about ignoring the noise, it's about finally hearing the truth inside it.Which cliché have you been ignoring that's ready to guide you?-Advisory services are offered through Root Financial Partners, LLC, an SEC-registered investment adviser. Jack is joined by The Athletic's Charlie Eccleshare (also of the Football Clichés podcast) to reflect on his time covering Tottenham Hotspur. Did he feel gutted to stop reporting on Spurs just as they lifted the Europa League? Were the club too harsh in sacking Ange Postecoglou, and is Thomas Frank really the man to take Spurs to the next level? Charlie also answers your questions: did covering Spurs give him a kind of Tottenham Stockholm syndrome despite not being a fan? How does covering tennis differ from football? And what are the most clichéd tropes in the way Spurs are written about in the press? Theme is Ghost Cat by Gillen. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

We say we want transformation, but often we create environments that protect people from pain instead of preparing them for growth. In the process, we enable spiritual stagnation, emotional fragility, and shallow discipleship. This week on Win Today, Katie Davis Majors exposes the hidden dangers of well-meaning empathy, the false security of “safe spaces,” and the clichés that erode authentic faith. In this conversation, we'll also tackle how to live faithfully in the tension between what God has promised and what we see right now. If you've ever found yourself numbing pain instead of processing it, or if you've settled for comfort instead of maturity, this conversation will challenge you to grow, even when it costs you.
