It was almost exactly 10 years ago that the Portland Timbers visited Starfire Stadium for what would ultimately be known as the Red Card Wedding. With the Timbers returning to Starfire on Tuesday, now seems like a good time to re-release this episode that was first recorded in 2017.Back then, Jeremiah teamed up with former SB Nation colleague Richard Farley and Soccer Made in PDX's Chris Rifer to record and produce this episode. It features such notable voices as Brad Evans, Lamar Neagle, Andy Rose, Ross Fletcher, Caleb Porter, Jack Jewsbury and Nat Borchers as well as Jeff Hosking, who was an assistant ref in the game. For the uninitiated, this was among the more surreal games in Sounders history. It most famous featured Clint Dempsey getting ejected and literally ripping up the referee's notebook, but it also featured two other red cards (which combined with Obafemi Martins' injury forced the Sounders to finish the game with seven players).Even before that, the match was shaping up as a classic with two heated rivals trading blows in a match that went to overtime. You'll definitely want to give it a listen.***Nos Audietis is the flagship podcast for Sounder at Heart, which became a reader-supported website on Aug. 21. In this episode of Espresso Martini, Chris and Matt discuss the alarming news that North Korea is sending up to 12,000 troops to bolster Russia's invasion of Ukraine. They explore the implications of North Korea gaining combat experience and modern warfare training and whether these troops are likely to be anything more than cannon fodder for Putin's war. Next, they unpack the death of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, mastermind of the October 7th attacks, killed by Israeli forces after a years-long manhunt. In a twist of fate, it was trainee soldiers who found him. While his final defiance is already being mythologized by supporters, Chris and Matt assess whether his death will weaken Hamas or bolster its extremist factions. They also explore the arrest of seven Israelis accused of spying for Iran and how these betrayals compromised national security. Finally, they examine growing threats against FEMA workers in North Carolina, driven by conspiracy theories that disrupted disaster relief efforts and underscore the real dangers of misinformation. Lero partners with Arm to build prototype car cameras for enhanced road safety Lero, the Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) Research Centre for Software, has today announced an innovative new partnership with Arm, the global semiconductor and software leader. The research project, valued at €566,000, is designed to explore new technologies that will enable cars to see and react to their surroundings faster, more intelligently and more effectively. A four-year collaboration between Lero and Arm, the ARMADAS1 project is focused on the development of next-generation car camera systems. The project will explore the optimisation of artificial intelligence to enhance how vehicles perceive their surroundings. The research is being led by Professor Patrick Denny of Lero, who is an Associate Professor in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Imaging at the University of Limerick and an expert in automotive imaging. The ambitious project is designed to help reduce road accidents by modelling advanced imaging systems for vehicles that are more responsive than existing technology. "As car camera systems become increasingly sophisticated and AI is deployed across the vehicle, this research aims to explore the potential of smarter, more responsive imaging systems optimised for computers rather than humans. The collaboration between Lero and Arm could revolutionise the way vehicles perceive their environments by optimising cameras and sensing systems for AI processing, enabling cars to sense and react faster to their environment," explained Prof. Denny. "The automotive market is going through an unprecedented transformation, and as part of this, we're seeing an explosion in the demand for AI across the vehicle," said Andy Rose, VP of Technology Strategy and Fellow, Arm. "Bringing together Arm's technical expertise and market knowledge with Lero's internationally recognised software and computer imaging research capabilities, this project has the potential to drive exciting new developments for next-generation automotive vision systems." This research will benefit drivers, the public, and vulnerable road users. The project's advancements have the potential to not only help make cars smarter but also empower chip manufacturers to develop innovative new products for this market. October 6, 1983. British Columbia, Canada. 27-year old Bernd Goericke and his 22-year old fiancée, Andrea Scherpf, are found shot to death next to a remote road. The couple hailed from West Germany and had been hitchhiking through Canada and an unidentified man driving a pick-up truck is seen using Andrea's travellers' cheques in the days following her death. Nearly six years later, a suspect named Andy Rose is charged with the crime based on testimony from a former friend who claimed she heard him confess to the murders. After two trials and two overturned convictions, the charges against Andy are dropped when DNA testing on a key piece of evidence excludes him as the perpetrator, but no one else is ever charged with killing Bernd and Andrea. On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we travel back to our home country of Canada to explore an unsolved double murder which led to a wrongful conviction. First, Alex and Sam are joined by Mitchell Tierney of Waking the Red and Darby Magazine to break down the 'Caps upcoming matchup, a clash with their Canadian rivals, Toronto FC. To start, Tierney shares how he feels TFC's start to the year has gone, before looking at who to watch out for from this game, and the expectations for TFC against Vancouver knowing that some big Champions League games are awaiting them just around the corner. After, Alex and Sam look at what's new with the Whitecaps this week, diving into some updates surrounding the team and its players, before then diving into some interesting comments from Marc Dos Santos, Cristian Gutierrez and Andy Rose from media availabilities this week. Then, they dive into some predictions for the Toronto match, first looking back at their predictions from last week and seeing how they did on that front, before then throwing out a few new predictions of their own for the Toronto game. Lastly, Third Sub contributor Peter Hicken then joins Alex for a first edition of 'Peter's Ponderings', a new weekly segment where Peter joins the show to chat about stuff that he's been finding interesting in the North American soccer scene. The latest AFTN Soccer Show is out for another packed show of Vancouver Whitecaps, Major League Soccer, and Canadian football chat. The new MLS season is seven weeks away and the news around the league is really starting to ramp up. There's new signings, new kits, new managerial vacancies, and doubts surrounding new teams. We chat about all of that and more this episode. In Whitecapsland a new defensive signing is set to be announced this week, with Angolan-Portuguese right back Bruno Gaspar joining on loan from CP Sporting. What will this mean for the porous Vancouver backline, which is now one of the most expensive in MLS history. Our feature interview this week is with one of those defensive pieces, goalkeeper Evan Newton. We have a lengthy chat with Evan about his move to Vancouver and his career so far. What advice did his mentor Jon Busch give him? Why did it take so long for the USL standout to get back to MLS? How did he unintentionally derail NYCFC's Champions League preparations? All this and more are discussed in a very enjoyable chat. We also delve into Thierry Henry's departure in Montreal and hear from VP and CEO Kevin Gilmore and Sporting Director Olivier Renard about his decision and where that leaves the club. Up first, they catch up on the Whitecaps news of the week, as they look at some of the confirmed transactions that have happened in the past week. First, they look at a confirmed departure, as David Milinkovic's contract was officially terminated this week, before looking at some of the names that signed new deals in the past week, as Andy Rose officially re-signed (and became an assistant coach for the 'Caps U19 team!), while 'Caps Super Draft pick David Egbo and longtime USL veteran Evan Newton signed deals to join the team. After that, they look at how the CBA negotiations have progressed over the last week, giving some thoughts on the multiple extensions of the negotiating deadline by MLS, breaking down what sort of message this whole process has delivered. To round off the episode, they then tip their hat to Club de Foot Montreal and the incredible work they've put in behind the scenes to build a sneaky-good team, before devolving into some more MLS kit discussion and speculation.

Welcome back to another episode of the Third Sub Podcast! In this episode, Alex and Sam are back, as usual, this time to chat another Vancouver Whitecaps victory! After the 'Caps did well to grind out a victory over the San Jose Earthquakes this past weekend, they dive into how the game unfolded, as Vancouver overcame a slow start and a tough defensive mistake to get a gritty victory. They then get into a debate about these sorts of victories and the validity of them, as the 'Caps have found a way to get results as of late, but not always via the prettiest of means. While that may mean making the playoffs, the question of the long-term implications of such a thing is something worth pondering, especially if a lot of these guys don't end up sticking around next season. After diving into the other parts of the game, they finish off the San Jose talk with a look at their 'Third Sub of the Game', which in this one goes to Andy Rose and Cristian Gutierrez, giving one word each of their respective performances. To finish things off, they then look ahead to the next 'Caps game, coming against Seattle in midweek, giving a prediction for how they think the game will go. With Alex on a bit of a hot streak after an accurate prediction for the San Jose game, he tests his luck with a bold prognostic, while Sam smartly goes for a bit of the more conservative projection. Marc Dos Santos knows LAFC perhaps better than any other opposing coach in MLS. After serving as an assistant to Bob in our inaugural season of 2018, he took the job as head of the Whitecaps, where he dealt LAFC our first loss of 2019. Some said Dos Santos had LAFC all figured out. But as you’ll hear on Episode 119 of Defenders of the Banc, that couldn’t be farther from the truth. Last season, after the aforementioned defeat to Vancouver, in Canada, LAFC roared back. Despite going down 1-0, LAFC rattled off 6 consecutive goals en route to a massive win. Bob even got some help from his son-in-law, Andy Rose, as he contributed an own goal. Surely there’s no way lighting would strike twice, right? Wrong. LAFC forced the Whitecaps to wave the white flag yet again, putting up another 6 goals and, improbably, another gift from Bob’s son-in-law on the score sheet. BWP netted a brace, Rossi added to his league-leading total, and Brian Rodriguez assisted on three goals, but only one makes the box score. It was a performance for the ages, for the second time in as many years. In addition to the usual recap, the boys look back on the career of Danilo Silva while watching the match from the Banc, Phillip Ejimadu joins Alejandro Guido in San Diego, and we forget our “Wait, What?!” moment yet again. It’s a six-pack for LAFC tonight. The only question is whether it’s Labatt’s or Molson. Either way, it’s Vancouver waving the white flag. Another 10 games or so round out the 2020 MLS schedule, so you’ll be hearing plenty from Filly and the Scarf during the month of October. Don’t forget to use that #KickChildhoodCancer to raise money for pediatric cancer research. We’ll see you for episode 120!

Whitecaps midfielder Andy Rose says a draw was probably the result that was deserved against TFC but it was still tough giving up that late, scrappy goal because the Caps were doing a good job defending and soaking up the pressure without allowing too many good chances.

Football in the snow conjures up some fantastic images. Orange balls. Sliding tackles. Cleared lines marked on pitches. A football show in the snow isn't quite as magical but we try our best to keep you all cozy again this week as Snowmageddon 2019 hits Vancouver. Thankfully for the Whitecaps, they've been in the tropical climes of Hawaii. Unfortunately for them, they're flying home! That'll be a shock to their system, as was some of the Whitecaps news of the week. We delve into it all looking at the arrivals of Erik Godoy and Joaquin Ardaiz, the rumoured additions of Fredy Montero and Brian Ruiz, the departure of Marcel de Jong, and, of course, the 'Caps two preseason matches in Hawaii. Not that you can glean too much from those. We also sit down for chats with Whitecaps midfielders Andy Rose and David Norman about returning to MLS, the season ahead, and their respective times in Scotland with Motherwell and Queen of the South. Plus some MLS and CPL news from the past week and Soccer Hooligans feature in this week's Wavelength section. June 16, 2015 is a date that will always bear special significance to Seattle Sounders fans, and to a lesser degree those of the Portland Timbers. That was the Cascadia rivals faced off at Starfire Soccer Stadium in a U.S. Open Cup match. More relevantly, it was the day Clint Dempsey lost his mind, the Sounders finished the match with just seven players on the pitch and the Timbers became the first road team to win a competitive match against the Sounders at Starfire. We teamed up with Chris Rifer of Soccer Made in Portland and FourFourTwo's Richard Farley to tell the story of this fateful day through the people who experienced it first hand. We talked to Lamar Neagle, Andy Rose, Ross Fletcher, Nat Borchers, Caleb Porter, Jack Jewsbury and referee Jeff Hosking.

For now, though, we've got interviews with Ross Fletcher, Brad Evans, Lamar Neagle, Andy Rose, Nat Borchers and Jack Jewsbury in the can. They had some wonderful perspectives on the proceedings of that fateful night. For now, here's a taste of what's to come. Music credit: The Rains of Castamere
