GDP Script/ Top Stories for Feb 28th   Publish Date:  Feb 27th   From the Ingles Studio Welcome to the Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. Today is Wednesday, February 28th and Happy heavenly Birthday to Rolling Stones guitarist Brian Jones. ***02.28.24 – BIRTHDAY – BRIAN JONES*** I'm Bruce Jenkins and here are your top stories presented by Tom Wages Funeral Homes. Gunman Convicted Of Killing Car Dealership Co-Owner In Murder-For-Hire Plot Georgia lawmakers push immigration bills in response to UGA student's death Research reveals potential breakthrough in breast cancer treatment Plus, my conversation with Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on food products  from other stores. All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: TOM WAGES   STORY 1: Gunman Convicted Of Killing Car Dealership Co-Owner In Murder-For-Hire Plot A Gwinnett County jury has sentenced Lilburn resident Wesley "Draco" Vickers to life in prison without parole for his involvement in the murder-for-hire of Snellville car dealership owner Courtney Owens in late 2022. Vickers was found guilty of malice and felony murder, aggravated assault, and firearm possession charges. Prosecutors allege that Stoney Lamar Williams, Owens' business partner and ex-boyfriend, orchestrated the plot. Williams is set to stand trial in March. Vickers received an additional five-year sentence for possessing the murder weapon. Owens was fatally shot at Royal Court Motors, where she co-owned the dealership. The Gwinnett County District Attorney vowed to hold perpetrators of violence accountable. STORY 2: Georgia lawmakers push immigration bills in response to UGA student's death Following the tragic murder of 22-year-old Laken Riley in Athens, Georgia, discussions about immigration policy have been reignited in the state legislature. The suspect in Riley's killing, Jose Antonio Ibarra, is an undocumented immigrant with a history of legal issues. Governor Brian Kemp and other Republicans have blamed federal immigration policy, while Democrats accuse the GOP of politicizing the tragedy. Proposed legislation includes bills to refund property taxes for areas with lax law enforcement, penalize jailers for not reporting inmates' immigration status, and transfer soon-to-be-released undocumented inmates to sanctuary states. These bills have until Thursday to pass one chamber for a chance at becoming law this year. STORY 3: Research reveals potential breakthrough in breast cancer treatment New research suggests that breast cancer could be treated with a drug that mimics testosterone's effects, offering a potentially less toxic approach compared to traditional estrogen-blocking treatments. The drug enobosarm stimulates the androgen receptor, which has been found to suppress estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) breast cancer, the most common type. In a study involving 136 postmenopausal women with advanced ER+ breast cancer, enobosarm showed promising antitumor effects without causing adverse side effects or masculinizing symptoms. This novel hormonal strategy offers hope for a less debilitating form of treatment, with potential for further investigation in combination with other therapies.   We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We'll be right back. Break 2: INGLES 7   STORY 4: Gwinnett Educators Group Endorses Shana White In School Board District 3 Race The Gwinnett County Association of Educators (GCAE) announced its endorsement of veteran teacher Shana White in the District 3 race for the Gwinnett County Board of Education. The decision was based on White's dedication to public service, her recent teaching experience within GCPS classrooms, and her platform informed by those experiences. White, a third-generation educator, has taught at various schools within GCPS and currently works at the Kapor Foundation. The endorsement follows GCAE's previous endorsements for Leroy Ranel and Tarece Johnson-Morgan in other school board districts. While White secured GCAE's endorsement, other candidates in the District 3 race, such as Yanin Cortes and Steven Gasper, have received endorsements from Mary Kay Murphy and U.S. Rep. Rich McCormick, respectively. STORY 5: Georgia lawmakers hold out hope for bill that would restrict publication of mugshots The practice of sheriff's offices posting mugshots of booked individuals has faced criticism due to its potential consequences, including job loss and reputational damage, especially for those not convicted of a crime. Representative Roger Bruce proposed House Bill 882 to restrict mugshot posting until conviction, with fines for non-compliance. However, a similar bill by Representative Jordan Riley has different provisions, such as delaying release until the sheriff deems it safe, raising concerns about restricting access for journalists and potential workload issues for sheriff's offices. While there is bipartisan support for such measures, they face challenges in committee and raise debates over free speech and the protection of innocent individuals.   STORY 6: LEAH MCGRATH And now here is my conversation with Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on food products from other stores.   STORY 7: LEAH MCGRATH ***LEAH MCGRATH INERVIEW***   We'll have final thoughts after this.   Break 4: HENRY CO SHERIFFS OFFICE   Signoff – Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Gwinnett Daily Post podcast. It began with this tweet: I hear some suggest everyone should learn to code. Ok. But should everyone learn basic woodworking? electrical work? cooking? plumbing? automotive? Those are all good things but is time part of the issue? How do all these good things get taught? Just thinking out loud.— Dean Shareski (@shareski) September 10, 2018 When I say “thinking out loud” that’s not some kind of coy add-on, I truly am curious and enjoy hearing a broad range of perspectives. Gary Stager offered to take a deeper dive into this statement and so myself, Gary and Shana White took a stab at it.  Gary referenced this slide as he shared: … Read the rest
