The VOE freezes taxable property values at the level when a homeowner first claimed the exemption, unlike the statewide version, which adjusts annually for inflation. County officials highlighted that the VOE has kept county taxes stable despite rising property values. Break 1: 07.14.22 KIA MOG STORY 1: Gwinnett could get up to 3 inches of snow on Friday Metro Atlanta is expected to receive at least an inch of snow on Friday, with a Winter Storm Watch in effect from 7 a.m. Friday to 7 a.m. Saturday. The area could see up to 3 inches of snow and sleet, plus a quarter-inch of ice, while north Georgia may get 3 to 6 inches of snow. Governor Brian Kemp urged residents to prepare and stay informed. State offices will close Friday, with employees working remotely. The Georgia Department of Transportation is treating roads with brine and advises limiting travel from Friday morning to mid-day Saturday due to hazardous conditions. STORY 2: Lilburn police arrest suspect in New Year's Day double murder Lilburn police are investigating a double murder from New Year's Day, believed to be a domestic incident. An out-of-state caller prompted a welfare check, leading to a missing person's case that evolved into a homicide investigation. With assistance from Gwinnett and Duluth police, investigators worked through the night, discovering two crime scenes and identifying two bodies in Gwinnett County. A suspect was arrested 30 miles from Lilburn and charged with murder, but identities remain undisclosed pending family notification. Police credit the swift resolution to collaboration with Gwinnett and Duluth police departments. STORY 3: Apalachee High School student arrested for bringing gun to school this week A 14-year-old student at Apalachee High School was arrested for bringing a gun to school, four months after a previous shooting incident at the same school. The student was apprehended without incident and faces charges including possession of a firearm and theft. Classes were canceled for Thursday as a precaution. The arrest follows a tragic shooting on September 4, 2024, where Colt Gray killed four people and injured nine. This incident has prompted renewed discussions on school safety, with the Barrow County Board of Education holding a special session to address the issue. The Red Cross urges donors, especially those with Type O negative blood and platelet donors, to donate to maintain the blood supply. Partnering with the NFL for National Blood Donor Month, donors before January 26 can enter to win a Super Bowl LIX package. The dismissal allows Mulberry to proceed with its incorporation, which began on January 1. Despite multiple lawsuits challenging its creation, none have succeeded. Judge Rachelle Carnesale ruled that Gwinnett failed to qualify for declaratory relief, leading to the dismissal of related claims. Mulberry's mayor expressed eagerness to work with Gwinnett County on service transitions. Gwinnett officials consider the lawsuit pending and have not commented on the ruling. Break 1: GON   STORY 1: Mother Pleads Guilty To Murdering Son, Setting Apartment On Fire   Azaria Shante Burton, 23, of Peachtree Corners, has been sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty to murdering her 5-year-old son, Jayveon Pruitt, and setting their apartment on fire to cover up the crime. Prosecutors revealed Burton stabbed her son 22 times before starting the fire in October 2023. She also pleaded guilty to charges including arson, aggravated assault, and tampering with evidence. The Gwinnett County District Attorney condemned Burton's actions, describing them as a senseless act of violence against her own child. Despite being pregnant and facing eviction, Burton premeditated the murder, purchasing flammable gel and practicing setting fires. During the plea hearing, she showed no remorse despite multiple opportunities to address the court. STORY 2:  Parkview Promotes Alum David Reynolds to Head Baseball Coach   David Reynolds, a Parkview High School graduate and longtime assistant coach, has been named the new head baseball coach following the resignation of Chan Brown. Reynolds played under the legendary Hugh Buchanan and later coached alongside Brown, contributing to six state championships and three national titles during his tenure as assistant. Reynolds, also a former football player at Parkview, brings deep roots and a commitment to community, having spent his entire life in Lilburn. His dedication to Parkview and its baseball program, combined with his coaching experience and community ties, made him the natural choice for the position. Reynolds aims not only to continue the program's winning tradition but also to mentor young men in character development. Coria faces charges of malice murder, felony murder, and aggravated assault. The Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office Fugitive Unit tracked Coria to Acworth, where he was arrested without incident after being monitored leaving an address in Dunwoody. Valdez was found dead in his car at 880 Indian Trail Lilburn Road. The motive remains unclear, though the incident began between Burns Road and Dickens Road. STORY 2: Seven men face RICO charges for allegedly breaking into 492 cars in Gwinnett A joint operation involving multiple law enforcement agencies and the Gwinnett County District Attorney's Office resulted in the indictment of seven men on racketeering charges for breaking into 492 cars and stealing some of them over 17 months. The suspects, including residents from East Point, Fairburn, and Conley, face RICO charges. The investigation, starting in November 2022, involved fingerprint analysis, DNA evidence, surveillance videos, and cell phone data. Five suspects have been arrested, while two remain at large. The DA's office aims to hold the defendants accountable, with each facing up to 20 years in prison if convicted. STORY 3: Investigators: 61-year-old Norcross Woman Allegedly Set Two Homes on Fire Gwinnett County Fire Investigators are searching for Hong T. Huynh, a 61-year-old Norcross woman, accused of intentionally setting two homes on fire early Saturday morning. The fires, which occurred on Buckingham Court and Turners Ridge Drive, about 3.5 miles apart, displaced multiple families and resulted in one serious injury. Both fires were deemed connected and deliberate. Investigators are seeking information leading to Huynh's arrest, offering up to $10,000 for tips. Published in the journal Cell, this study addresses the urgent need for new antibiotics as antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a significant public health threat, killing 1.27 million people annually. Researchers verified AI predictions by testing 100 peptides in the lab, finding many effective against resistant bacteria. The study involved analyzing over 60,000 metagenomes globally. The resulting AMPSphere database is now publicly available to aid antibiotic discovery. STORY 7: Women overweight as teen or young adult more likely to have stroke: study New research reveals that women who were overweight as teenagers or young adults are significantly more likely to suffer a stroke by age 55, while men do not share the same risk. The Finnish study followed over 10,000 participants for 40 years and found women overweight at ages 14 or 31 had a higher risk of ischemic stroke, even if they lost weight later. Overweight women at age 31 were also more likely to suffer bleeding strokes. Men had increased risk only if obese at age 31. The study emphasizes the long-term health effects of early obesity and suggests health professionals address weight issues in a non-stigmatizing manner. Abreu faces charges including aggravated assault, felony murder, and firearm possession by a minor. He is charged as an adult and is currently in custody. STORY 2: The Teen Driver Facing Charges in The Death of a 4-Year-Old Is Out of Jail Jacob Johnston, an 18-year-old driver, was charged with second-degree vehicular homicide and reckless conduct for the death of 4-year-old Abigail Hernandez, who was struck while walking with her family in the Mall of Georgia's parking lot on March 10. Brantley, a member of the Gangster Disciples, shot the victim, Leslie Smith, in the back of the head while attempting to rob him. Another man, identified as Steven Leap, was also targeted but survived. Brantley received a life sentence plus 10 years for felony murder, aggravated assault, and violating the Street Gang Terrorism and Prevention Act. The prosecution highlighted Brantley's violent history, dating back to his youth, and his role in the gang. Brantley was apprehended with the help of surveillance cameras after a witness reported the crime, leading police to track him to a nearby hotel where he was attempting to flee. STORY 2: Collision In Norcross Leaves Two Dead on Sunday Two individuals were killed and two others suffered severe injuries in a collision between two cars in unincorporated Norcross. The incident occurred at the intersection of Buford Highway and South Peachtree St. According to preliminary investigations, the driver of a red Volvo attempted to turn right, causing a collision with a black Toyota. The Volvo driver, 73-year-old Jill Swenson, and her passenger, 74-year-old William Brown, both from Norcross, died at the hospital. The driver and passenger of the Toyota remained hospitalized. Brown was known for his role as Toys for Tots Santa Claus on FOX 5 Atlanta, and both Swenson and Brown were active in Norcross' Lionheart Theatre. Gwinnett police are seeking witnesses to provide information about the accident. Vickers was found guilty of malice and felony murder, aggravated assault, and firearm possession charges. Prosecutors allege that Stoney Lamar Williams, Owens' business partner and ex-boyfriend, orchestrated the plot. Williams is set to stand trial in March. Vickers received an additional five-year sentence for possessing the murder weapon. Owens was fatally shot at Royal Court Motors, where she co-owned the dealership. The Gwinnett County District Attorney vowed to hold perpetrators of violence accountable. STORY 2: Georgia lawmakers push immigration bills in response to UGA student's death Following the tragic murder of 22-year-old Laken Riley in Athens, Georgia, discussions about immigration policy have been reignited in the state legislature. The suspect in Riley's killing, Jose Antonio Ibarra, is an undocumented immigrant with a history of legal issues. Governor Brian Kemp and other Republicans have blamed federal immigration policy, while Democrats accuse the GOP of politicizing the tragedy. Proposed legislation includes bills to refund property taxes for areas with lax law enforcement, penalize jailers for not reporting inmates' immigration status, and transfer soon-to-be-released undocumented inmates to sanctuary states. These bills have until Thursday to pass one chamber for a chance at becoming law this year. STORY 3: Research reveals potential breakthrough in breast cancer treatment New research suggests that breast cancer could be treated with a drug that mimics testosterone's effects, offering a potentially less toxic approach compared to traditional estrogen-blocking treatments. The drug enobosarm stimulates the androgen receptor, which has been found to suppress estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) breast cancer, the most common type. In a study involving 136 postmenopausal women with advanced ER+ breast cancer, enobosarm showed promising antitumor effects without causing adverse side effects or masculinizing symptoms. She was last seen departing from McClure Science High School and was spotted running down Club Drive in the direction of Shackleford Road. Cambron's disappearance was reported through the Gwinnett County Public Schools Police Department. At the time of her disappearance, she was wearing a grey hoodie, dark pants, and light-colored shoes. She stands 5 feet 2 inches tall, weighs approximately 115 pounds, and has long, dark hair and brown eyes. Authorities are urging anyone with information on Cambron's whereabouts to come forward. STORY 2: Georgia House Bill Would Add Demographic Diversity To Invest Georgia Fund Selection Criteria State Representative Darshun Kendrick, representing Lithonia, is championing House Bill 1138 with the goal of broadening the demographic reach of the Invest Georgia Fund. The fund operates as a "fund of funds", directing state resources into venture capital firms which subsequently invest in local businesses. The proposed legislation by Kendrick introduces a new criterion to the fund's objectives - promoting investment diversity that mirrors Georgia's demographic diversity. The objective behind this initiative is to stimulate economic growth and generate job opportunities for a wider range of Georgians. Presently, the bill is being deliberated by the Georgia House Economic Development and Tourism Committee. STORY 3: Gwinnett Lawmaker Files Freedom to Drive Bill In a move geared towards inclusivity and public safety, State Senator Nabilah Islam Parkes, representing Duluth, has tabled Senate Bill 478, also known as the Freedom To Drive Act. In addition to acknowledging corporate contributions, Partnership Gwinnett also uses this occasion to recognize the efforts of nonprofit partners such as the American Cancer Society and Junior Achievement. STORY 6: Hooper-Renwick Speaker Series To Feature Author Victoria Christoper Murray on Feb. 22 The Hooper-Renwick School, nestled in Lawrenceville and recognized as the only Black public high school in Gwinnett County prior to its consolidation with the Gwinnett County School System, is set to be transformed into a spacious 25,000-square-foot library. The project, which is financed by the Hooper-Renwick Memorial Programming Fund & Endowment with significant backing from Peach State Credit Union, seeks to uphold and celebrate the school's rich history. In addition to this transformative project, a speaker series has been organized to honor the experiences and stories of Hooper-Renwick attendees. This series will kick off on February 22 at the Lawrenceville Arts Center with Victoria Christoper Murray, a celebrated author known for her New York Times bestselling works. The event will feature insightful discussions led by Murray and fellow author ReShonda Tate, as well as Hooper-Renwick alumni Joyce Moore and Dr. John Maxey. STORY 7: Georgia House votes to expand paid parental leave for state workers In a significant move, the Georgia House of Representatives has decisively passed House Bill 1010, a measure designed to enhance paid parental leave for state workers. Under the terms of the bill, the allocation of paid leave would be increased from the current 120 hours to 240 hours, equivalent to six weeks. This provision would be applicable following the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.   With a vote of 153-11, the bill received substantial backing. Speaker Jon Burns underscored the crucial role such legislation plays in supporting working families. Meanwhile, Speaker Pro Tempore Jan Jones stressed the importance of this expanded benefit in attracting and retaining employees.   Following this approval by the House, the bill will now proceed to the state Senate for further deliberation. Break 1: INGLES 3   STORY 1: Father Also Charged With Murder In Beating Death of 8-Year-Old The father, Cledir Barros, of an 8-year-old girl who died from alleged beatings by her stepmother, Natiela Barros, has been arrested and charged with cruelty to a child and second-degree murder. Natiela Barros was previously charged with first-degree cruelty to children, aggravated assault, felony murder, and malice murder. The incident occurred at their Bethlehem home in Gwinnett County. The arrest warrant states that Natiela Barros beat the child with a wooden rolling pin and did not seek medical help for the victim. Both Cledir Barros and Natiela Barros are in custody and denied bond. The motive for the beating is unclear. STORY 2: Discovery High School Student Arrested For Making Social Media Threat A student from Discovery High School has been arrested after making threats against the school on social media. The arrest followed an investigation involving the FBI, state and local law enforcement, and telecommunications companies. Although no gun or weapon was found, and there was no evidence the student intended to carry out the threat, the school is taking the situation seriously. The threat caused panic and disrupted the school day. The student will face criminal charges and the maximum school disciplinary consequence. This incident follows a similar one last August when a rumor during a football game caused a stampede. STORY 3: Chinese herbal remedy ginkgo biloba helps stroke victims recover quicker A study suggests that a traditional Chinese herbal remedy, ginkgo biloba, may aid stroke recovery. The study, conducted in China, found that stroke survivors treated with intravenous injections of ginkgo diterpene lactone meglumine (GDLM) showed better cognitive recovery at 14 days and 90 days after a clot-caused ischemic stroke. Ginkgo biloba, derived from the ginkgo tree, has been used in China as a complementary treatment for ischemic stroke. The compound showed neuroprotective effects, including expanding brain blood vessels and improving brain cell tolerance to oxygen deprivation. The bill includes a constitutional amendment that would require a referendum, giving Georgia voters the final say. The legislation, sponsored by Republican Sen. Clint Dixon, allows the Georgia Lottery to oversee the sports gambling industry, with a 20% tax on revenue to fund higher education HOPE scholarships and pre-K programs. The bill passed with a 35-15 vote, meeting the two-thirds majority required for constitutional amendments. The legislation now heads to the House chamber for further consideration. STORY 5: Georgia Rent Prices Increased 6th Most in the U.S. Last Year The U.S. economy is showing signs of optimism, with strong economic growth, consumer spending, and employment rates despite previous recession concerns. The Federal Reserve hints at possible interest rate cuts in 2024. While inflation has slowed, the housing market continues to pose challenges, with high rental costs driven by a long-term shortage of housing stock. Rent prices have surged, particularly in states like Rhode Island, Maryland, and Delaware, where median rents increased by double-digit percentages. The closure reflects the challenges faced by the brewing industry in the region, with Anderby Brewing in Peachtree Corners closing in the summer of the previous year, Black Bird Brewing in Lilburn shutting down in October, and Ironshield Brewing in Lawrenceville closing its taproom in December while continuing beer sales through local retailers. The closures come amid broader challenges for breweries nationwide. STORY 7: Georgia Senate Passes Mulberry Cityhood Bill The Georgia Senate has approved legislation proposing a referendum to form the city of Mulberry in northeast Gwinnett, and the bill now proceeds to the state House of Representatives for consideration. The proposed city, championed by House Majority Leader Chuck Efstration, would be Gwinnett County's 17th city if approved by voters in the May 21 general election primary ballot. The cityhood proposal, prompted by concerns over development in northern Gwinnett, aims to address zoning issues in the area.
