Break 1: MOG STORY 1: Gwinnett Jail Dogs Supporters Launch Petition To Save Program The Gwinnett Sheriff's Office has suspended its Jail Dogs program due to the expansion of its mental health unit in the county jail, sparking public outcry. The Jail Dogs program, active for 13 years, pairs inmates with dogs for therapeutic rehabilitation. The program, ending on December 15, has drawn support from the community, leading to the launch of a petition on Change.org titled "Save the Gwinnett Jail Dog Program." The petition, with a goal of 1,000 signatures, emphasizes the program's value in teaching inmates valuable skills, fostering life-changing lessons, and helping overcrowded shelters. The Gwinnett Sheriff's Office has not ruled out the possibility of the program's return in the future.   STORY 2: Health and Wellness Resource Fair to be held in Snellville The Georgia Advocacy Office is hosting a Health and Wellness Resource Fair for people with disabilities and older adults at the Gwinnett County Public Library Centerville Branch in Snellville on November 29. The free event, running from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., will provide health screenings, community benefits navigation, seasonal vaccines, and resources for essential services. Bernard Moore, Community Outreach and Civic Engagement Disability Advocate for the Georgia Advocacy Office, emphasized the importance of connecting communities with life-enriching services. The federally-mandated Georgia Advocacy Office will continue hosting resource events throughout Georgia until April, supported by the Administration for Community Living through USAging.   STORY 3: Three Students Overdoses At Berkmar High School Prompt Increased Drug Prevention Efforts in Gwinnett Schools Gwinnett County Public Schools is grappling with students experiencing fentanyl-related overdoses at Berkmar High School, with three incidents reported this semester. None resulted in fatalities as Narcan was administered in each case. This issue is a manifestation of the nationwide opioid crisis, with teens unknowingly consuming substances containing fentanyl. The district is working with health professionals, community partners, and the criminal justice system to address the problem. Efforts include Narcan training for staff, substance abuse awareness presentations, and community engagement to raise awareness and prevent drug-related issues in schools. The company has submitted a commercial rezoning application for a 5,400-square-foot restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating, a two-lane drive-thru, and 71 parking spaces. The proposed location is adjacent to Redeemer Church, and if approved, the church plans to subdivide its property. The Chick-fil-A will be positioned near existing establishments, including Wendy's, Waffle House, Aldi, Walmart Supercenter, and more. The rezoning requires approval from Gwinnett County's Planning Commission and Board of Commissioners.   STORY 5: New Year's resolutions? Most Americans believe that concept is outdated A survey of 2,000 Americans revealed that 55% believe the concept of New Year's resolutions is outdated. Millennials are the most disillusioned, with 66% expressing disinterest. Over half of respondents give up on resolutions by March, and only 5% stick to them for a full year. Reasons for abandonment include feeling too pressured (40%), perceiving no lasting change (34%), and viewing resolutions as a chore (34%). Despite finding resolutions unrealistic, 52% of respondents are interested in setting goals for 2024, with Gen Z (67%) and millennials (71%) showing the most interest. This expansion aligns with Hyundai's work on a new EV plant near Savannah in 2025. Banyan Street Capital, which leased the office spaces, sees it as a positive impact on Georgia's growing EV industry. Other EV-related companies leasing space at Satellite Place include Sungeel Recycling Park Georgia, Kum Young Eng America, FNS, 3Plus Logistics, Happynarae America, Wonbang Tech USA, and SK i.e. Technology.   STORY 7: U.S. Sen. Raphael Warnock tours proposed national park site at Ocmulgee Mounds U.S. Senator Raphael Warnock has announced plans to introduce legislation in Congress for the creation of Georgia's first national park, following a tour of the Ocmulgee Mounds in Macon, a prehistoric Native American site. The Ocmulgee Mounds, established as a national historical park in the 1930s, holds significant cultural and historical value. The National Park Service recently sent a study to Congress supporting the protection of the Muscogee Creek Nation's historic homeland in Middle Georgia. This group includes teachers from elementary, middle, and high schools who were nominated by their colleagues at the local level. The finalists will be celebrated on December 7th, with the top teacher in Gwinnett County to be announced during the event. These educators represent a diverse range of subjects and grade levels, showcasing the district's commitment to recognizing excellence in teaching.     STORY 5: Football Update  In a historic feat, Seckinger High School's football program secured its inaugural varsity win, triumphing 43-22 over the Oglethorpe County Patriots. Despite trailing 15-0 early on, Seckinger displayed remarkable resilience and evident improvement from the previous season.   Meanwhile, the Archer football team delivered a commanding Homecoming victory, defeating Brookwood 34-6 in their Region 4-AAAAAAA opener. Archer showcased a strong performance on both sides of the ball, with their defense preventing Brookwood from scoring touchdowns.   Defending state champions Mill Creek commenced their Region 8-AAAAAAA schedule impressively with a resounding 47-7 victory over Central Gwinnett. The nationally ranked Hawks, now boasting a 6-0 record, established a commanding 23-0 lead in the first quarter and an impressive 40-0 advantage by halftime.   In another noteworthy game, the Parkview Panthers initiated their Region 4-AAAAAAA schedule with a solid 34-20 win over South Gwinnett. Despite losing running back Trelain Maddox to an early injury, Parkview showcased its depth and a potent passing game, orchestrated by quarterbacks Cooper Frank and Jaiden Jenkins. These schools have been acknowledged as 2022-2023 Literacy Leaders for their exceptional achievement or growth in third-grade reading. Seven schools were recognized for outstanding achievement, while one received recognition for growth. State Superintendent Richard Woods will visit these schools to commend their efforts. Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) has been investing in professional development and instructional materials to improve literacy outcomes and continues to focus on continuous improvement to meet academic targets in literacy.   STORY 7: Gwinnett County Public Schools SAT scores top state, national averages Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) students have outperformed both their state and national peers on SAT scores, according to data from the College Board and the Georgia Department of Education. The GCPS Class of 2023 achieved a mean SAT score of 1091 (out of 1600), which is 88 points higher than the national average and 46 points higher than the state average. The Gwinnett School of Math, Science and Technology (GSMST) has maintained the highest mean SAT score in the state for four consecutive years. While GCPS' mean SAT score slightly decreased compared to the previous year, it still indicates progress in addressing learning loss and improving student outcomes. GCPS Superintendent Calvin J. Watts emphasized the district's commitment to meeting the needs of each student and increasing SAT participation. In the latest rankings, GGC secured the top spot for diversity in the Southern region and ranked fourth nationally for ethnic diversity among regional colleges. The rankings are based on data from the fall 2022 semester, with GGC's student body comprising 32% Black/African American, 27% Hispanic, 24% white, 12% Asian, and 4% multi-ethnic students. Rosario joined the Navy seven years ago for educational benefits, having attended Grayson High School and college. He credits his hometown's culture of staying calm and focused in fast-paced environments for helping him succeed in the Navy. HSC 3 conducts various missions, including search and rescue, air assaults, and medical evacuations. Rosario takes pride in being part of the Navy, contributing to national defense, and appreciates the guidance of mentors like Senior Chief Ronnie Mendoza and Chief Sean Fagan.   STORY 3: Snellville will hold liquor store license lottery on Sept. 25 Snellville officials are using a lottery to decide which business owner will be granted a liquor store license to operate a package store in the city. Five groups have submitted proposals, and the lottery, scheduled for September 25th at City Hall, will determine the recipient. This decision follows voter approval last November for the issuance of liquor store licenses. Initially, three proposals were approved for the lottery, but two more groups successfully appealed their denial, making a total of five eligible proposals. The lottery includes proposed sites near Main Street, McDonald's, Autobell Car Wash, Hampton Inn & Suites, and QuikTrip on U.S. Highway 78. Williams library in Snellville merges literacy with entrepreneurship   The new Elizabeth H. Williams Branch in Snellville is unlike any other Gwinnett County library. It shares a building with business entrepreneurs, offering a sprawling library on the ground floor and a Thrive Coworking space for small businesses on the second floor. The facility, costing $10.2 million in special purpose local option sales tax funds, is twice the size of the old Snellville branch and is unique for being the first library in the county to incorporate co-working spaces. Snellville's Mayor, Barbara Bender, sees it as an opportunity to support local entrepreneurs in a city known for its business community.   STORY 5: 4-H Farm Friends exhibit continues to connect people with animals at Gwinnett County Fair   The Gwinnett County 4-H Farm Friends exhibit at the Gwinnett County Fair continues to provide visitors with the opportunity to interact with farm animals. The exhibit, now in its 32nd year, features cows, a donkey, goats, sheep, newly hatched chicks, and ducklings. Visitors pay $1 per person to see the animals, and the funds raised serve as a significant fundraiser for the Gwinnett County 4-H group, covering expenses for various activities throughout the year. These awards recognize outstanding contributions to support student-athletes with physical disabilities. Ed Shaddix, recently retired athletic director for GCPS, is nominated for the Eli Wolff Award for Advocacy. Jeff Jones of the Gwinnett Heat is a nominee for the Gail Hendrick Award for Volunteerism. Additionally, two Heat coaches, Len Boudreaux and Lynette Swanson, are nominated for Junior Varsity Coach of the Year. The awards banquet will take place on October 22nd in Atlanta.   STORY 7: Rebecca Miranda breaks Brookwood career assists record in win over Parkview   Brookwood's volleyball team celebrated Senior Night as they defeated Parkview with a score of 25-18, 25-10, 25-23. Rebecca Miranda achieved a career milestone by breaking the program record for career assists with a total of 1,253 assists, surpassing the previous record set in 2019. The win ties Brookwood with Grayson for first place in Region 4-AAAAAAA, both holding 3-0 records. He had multiple strokes, with major bleeding and a clot. Due to the cause of the stroke being from him, going into AFIB and the clot not being operable; we have a long challenging journey ahead. Jose is a husband, and father of 6 amazing kids. He is loved by his family and community. He makes friends wherever he goes. He always extends a helping hand in his professional and personal life. He is an amazing man and deserves amazing care. As we don't know what the Lord has in store for Jose, we can only support him, emotionally, spiritually, and financially, to make sure he receives the best care through this journey. Please consider helping our family through these challenging times. Jose spent 3 weeks in icu at eastside piedmont in Snellville. We unfortunately had to transfer him to a LTACH in Athens. Not our first choice by far.. In order to see Jose, to ensure he is receiving proper care and provide additional support to Jose, we must travel over an hour each way. We do this 6 days a week. The conditions of the hospital are not ideal and I hope he progresses quickly to move to the stage so he can get out of there. While Jose, has great health insurance, we now have cover 100% of the premium on 50% of his Salary. We appreciate the support and can't thank everyone enough. Pet owners are encouraged to ensure their pets are up-to-date on rabies vaccinations. The incident is one of several rabies cases reported in Gwinnett County this year. The two-story building houses the library on the first floor, while the city of Snellville will use the second floor as a business center. Crump has been charged with Aggravated Assault, Felony Murder, and Possession of a Firearm During a Felony in connection with the death of 28-year-old Dareese Ellis, both of whom were staying at the hotel where the shooting took place. Ellis was shot and killed on Tuesday afternoon, and witnesses reported seeing a possible suspect fleeing the scene. Homicide detectives are investigating an altercation that may have occurred between the victim and the suspect prior to the shooting. Authorities are seeking information about Crump's whereabouts and encourage anyone with information to contact them...………….. read more at gwinnettdailypost.com   STORY 2: Lake Lanier Gwinnett County police investigators have identified two suspects, Manuel Lorenzo Sanchez (41) and Ricardo Lorenzo Montes (24), in connection with the murders of a brother and sister, Maria Rosaria Montes Dorantes and Juan Angel Montes. Sanchez faces charges including felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm or knife during certain crimes. Montes has been charged with tampering with evidence. The victims' bodies were discovered on the side of Interstate 85 near the I-985 split on August 27. Police have not yet released information about a potential motive for the killings, and the whereabouts of the suspects are currently unknown. Authorities are seeking information from the public to assist in their apprehension. Story 3: Death on side of I-85 Gwinnett County transportation officials are planning to expand microtransit services with the creation of a third microtransit zone in northwest Gwinnett, serving residents in Sugar Hill, Buford, and Suwanee. The budget request for this expansion was presented, aiming for capital funds in 2024 and operational funds in 2026. Microtransit, offered through the Ride Gwinnett app, provides on-demand rides within specific zones. Gwinnett has secured $2 million in grant funding for this project, contingent on a $500,000 local match, which is part of the 2024 budget request. This long-planned interchange is seen as crucial for addressing traffic congestion in the Lawrenceville-Suwanee road interchange area. The project includes the construction of a bridge and approaches over I-85/SR 403. GDOT expects the new interchange to reduce congestion on Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road, decrease northbound traffic backups on I-85's auxiliary lane, and improve safety by reducing accidents at Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road and I-85. The project is scheduled to open in the spring of 2026.               Story 5: Gwinnet Veterans HOF   Two military veterans from Gwinnett County, Georgia, will be among the 15 inductees into the Georgia Military Veterans Hall of Fame for 2023. Air Force Lt. Col. James Wesley Williams, a Vietnam veteran and former prisoner of war, and Army Sgt. Carvis Pittman Williams, a World War II veteran who will be honored posthumously, are set to be recognized. Lt. Col. Williams, currently residing in Norcross, served in the Vietnam War and was a prisoner of war in the Hanoi Hilton camp. Sgt. Carvis Williams, born in Snellville in 1919, served during World War II and earned the Silver Star for his gallantry. The induction ceremony will take place in Columbus on November 4, honoring a total of 177 Georgia veterans since the Hall of Fame's inception in 2013. Story 6: GCP   Aaron Lupuloff, Director of the GCPS Foundation, and Mike Cammack, Director of Norcross Community School, collaborated with Hope thru Soap and community partners to host an event providing support and community engagement to local families. The event aimed to assist families in need, particularly those with students in Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS). With over half of GCPS students qualifying for free or reduced lunch, the event addressed pressing needs. There are two programs available for application: the SOTA Conservatory Program (requiring an audition/portfolio) and the SOTA Fellows Program (with no admissions criteria). Students entering grades 10-12 for the next school year may apply, subject to availability, and transportation is provided for Central Gwinnett Cluster students, while students from other clusters must be eligible for permissive transfer and arrange their own transportation. The application deadline for the Conservatory Program is November 26, and auditions will be held on January 2 and 3, with acceptance notifications sent out in mid-January 2024. SOTA offers a specialized arts-focused education with a wide range of fine arts courses and opportunities for collaboration with professional arts organizations.   Story 8:  Yellow Daisy Festival   he 55th annual Yellow Daisy Festival is taking place at Stone Mountain Park this weekend. Originally starting as a small crafts show in 1986, the festival has grown to become one of the top arts and crafts shows in the country, recognized by Sunshine Artist Magazine and the Southeast Tourism Society. The event began yesterday and will be open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on today, Saturday, and Sunday. Over 400 artists and crafters, including 100 new artists, will showcase their creations, featuring jewelry, pottery, woodworking, baked goods, and more. The festival will also offer crafter demonstrations, activities for children, live music, and a beer garden.   Story 8: Buford Edges Wesleyan   Buford, the reigning Class 7A state champion in fastpitch softball, faced off against Wesleyan, the 2022 state champion in 3A, in a thrilling 12-inning game. The game was tied 1-1 through the 12th inning, with both teams putting up an incredible defensive effort. Buford's pitchers, Addie Rackey and Caroline Stanton, combined for 21 strikeouts, while Wesleyan's Macey Cintron had an outstanding performance as well, striking out 10 batters.In the 12th inning, Buford managed to break the tie with four runs, securing a 5-1 victory. Mackenzie Pickens, Madison Pickens, Stanton, and Tavye Borders contributed with key hits, and Rackley added a sacrifice fly. Stanton closed out the game with a dominant performance in the bottom of the 12th, striking out the side.Buford improved to 11-0 on the season, while Wesleyan's 10-game winning streak came to an end. The first fire occurred on Spring Mesa Drive, where a family dog alerted the homeowner to the fire, enabling their escape. Unfortunately, the dog did not survive. One firefighter was evaluated for heat exhaustion, and the Red Cross is supporting the family during repairs. The second fire took place on Raintree Drive, caused by a grill on the back porch. The homeowner and a family member escaped and called 911 from a neighbor's house. Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services responded to the blaze on Tumble Wood Trail early Saturday morning. Firefighters arrived to find heavy fire and were informed by bystanders that there might be a victim inside. Despite their efforts, a deceased female was found in a bedroom along with two deceased family pets. The fire was determined to be accidental in nature by fire investigators. The incident left three people displaced, and they are receiving assistance from the American Red Cross.  Story 3: car Gwinnett County police are seeking assistance in locating two men responsible for breaking into a car near Gwinnett Place Mall and stealing a gun, money, and checks. The incident occurred on August 17th at an outparcel adjacent to the mall. Surveillance footage captured the suspects on a dash cam. The police believe they were driving a gray Kia K5 passenger car and a black Cadillac CTS. Authorities urge anyone with information about the suspects' identities or whereabouts to contact detectives or Crime Stoppers, offering the option to remain anonymous. The incident occurred at a Truist Bank branch on Pleasant Hill Road. The woman used the victim's ID to withdraw $13,607 from the victim's account and cash a check for $6,111.23. She was captured on surveillance wearing a top with Minnie Mouse on its sleeves. Authorities are urging anyone with information about the woman's identity or whereabouts to contact detectives or Crime Stoppers. A cash reward is offered for tips leading to an arrest and indictment, with reference to case No. GP230060974.   Story 5: lilburn   Lilburn is gearing up for its municipal election with a competitive race for mayor. The ballot on November 7 will feature the incumbent Mayor Tim Dunn, his predecessor Johnny Crist, and Mohammed J. Hossain contending for the mayoral position. Additionally, the election will include contested races for two City Council seats. Post 1 Councilwoman Yoon-mi Hampton will be challenged by Christina van Maanen, while Post 2 Councilman S. Scott Batterton will compete against Tiffany Brunson and Joseph Payne. She secured a 34th place finish in the Class 7A golf competition during the previous season, and in her sophomore year, she earned all-county honors by coming in 22nd in the same class. Greco's dedication to both academics and athletics is evident through her maintenance of a GPA above 4.0.   Story 9:  wells   Jewel Wells of Mill Creek High School achieved a new course record at the Kowboys XC Invitational, leading her team to a second-place finish in the Florida event. Wells secured victory in the girls championship with a remarkable time of 19 minutes, 4.95 seconds in the 5K course. The Mill Creek Hawks earned 50 points, securing the runner-up position, while Sunlake (Fla.) won with 37 points. Mill Creek's Evelyn Schlitz took fifth place with a time of 19:56.94, and Lilly Kate Cropp claimed tenth place at 20:27.97. The GACD Superior Professional Support award was presented to Tixie Fowler of the Gwinnett County Conservation District. Fowler has secured substantial grants, initiated partnerships, and led successful projects such as the Crayfish Creek Restoration Project. She has also organized educational initiatives including workshops and videos for students and educators. Her dedication to the district and community was recognized by GACD officials, and her nomination was made by the Gwinnett County Conservation District. GACD's mission is to advocate for Georgia's natural resource conservation by providing leadership and strategic direction to Conservation Districts.   Story 5: fix   The supply of affordable housing in Georgia has drastically decreased due to the pandemic, leading to higher rents and increased homelessness among single adults and families. Advocates are pushing for action, but some solutions, like repealing Georgia's rent control ban, have faced opposition. The number of affordable units with rents under $600 dropped by about 67,000 between 2019 and 2021. Many landlords sold properties after the pandemic, exacerbating the issue. Notable performances came from Nadia Desbordes with 23 kills, 23 digs, and five blocks, Katie Leeming with 24 kills, Sara Marie Miller with eight aces, 35 digs, and 55 assists, and Avery Daum with 12 aces and 42 digs. Hebron Christian also participated, splitting their matches with wins against Morgan County and St. Vincent's, and losses to Sandy Creek and Savannah Christian. Ashley Troxell, Addison Griffin, and Aubrey Cowart led Hebron's efforts. Providence Christian reached the semifinals in the Dominion Endless Summer Tournament, led by Ava Wilmot, Ella Style, and Emmy Moody.   Story 8: moore   In the Pickens Preview cross country meet, Wood Moore from Wesleyan achieved fourth place in the varsity boys race with a time of 15 minutes, 57.33 seconds. Harrison's Riley Comstock won the race in 15:46.81. Kaleb Tesfaye (eighth) and Solomon Mussie (12th) were top finishers for Parkview, while North Gwinnett's Haydn Hermansen secured the 16th spot. Gwinnett's top girls finisher was North's Aurora Streleckis in eighth place with a time of 19:47.50. Parkview, Wesleyan, and North Gwinnett had competitive team standings in both boys and girls categories. The Parkview boys were sixth, North Gwinnett seventh, and Wesleyan thirteenth among 33 teams. In the girls' standings, Parkview took fifth, Wesleyan sixth, and North Gwinnett seventh among 29 teams.   Story 9:  opener   Despite dealing with illness-related absences, the Brookwood boys' cross country team triumphed in the Apalachee Season Opener, a 23-team event. The team secured victory with 69 points, narrowly surpassing runner-up Milton. The girls' team from Brookwood secured second place, with freshman Kennedy Wardle claiming an individual championship. Key performers for the boys included Alexander Thompson (fifth), Carter Dehnke (ninth), Alex Sotomayor (eleventh), and Charlie Thomas (twentieth). Collins Hill's Vincent Pifer secured fourteenth place. The Brookwood girls were led by Kennedy Wardle's victory, with Ava Layson (fifth) and Lauren Thisdale (tenth) contributing. During the stop, officers noticed he had multiple credit cards with different names and discovered evidence of alleged thefts and fraud amounting to over $100,000. Clay was initially charged with driving offenses and financial transaction card theft, but now faces counts of financial transaction card fraud, forgery, and identity fraud. Despite being initially released on bond, Clay's current whereabouts are unknown. Authorities are seeking public assistance to locate him. Tips can be provided to detectives or Crime Stoppers for a potential cash reward. A video shared on social media depicts the altercation in which the students wrestle and one of them repeatedly punches the other in the head while on the ground. The attacker then appears to stomp on the other student's head. The principal, Shane Orr, informed parents that the fight occurred between classes, leading to one student's injury. School administrators and resource officers are investigating the incident, and the student responsible for the attack has been arrested. The extent of the injured student's injuries was not specified. Story 3: brother Gwinnett County police have charged Yousaf Baysassie, the brother of a man who was shot and killed outside an Applebee's, with felony murder and aggravated assault in connection with the incident. The victim, Haaris Baysassie, died after being shot in the parking lot between Applebee's and O'Reilly Auto Parts on U.S. Highway 78. Yousaf Baysassie, the suspect, is currently not in custody and his whereabouts are unknown. In a surprising development, the charges against Tristyn Derriun Mays and Nyzerrius Carter, who were initially arrested in connection with the death, have been reduced. The updated playground will adhere to modern inclusivity standards while maintaining the essence of the original design. It will be constructed with environmentally-friendly, durable materials for longevity and minimal upkeep. New York-based Leathers & Associates, the original designer, is partnering with the city again. The PlayTown Committee will recruit 1,500 volunteers for the community build scheduled for Oct. 9-15, welcoming people of all abilities and interests. The build experience provides hands-on opportunities for citizens to contribute to their community and express shared pride.   Story 3: academy The Snellville Police Department is offering a nine-week Citizens Police Academy class from Sept. 7 to Nov. 2 to foster a stronger bond between officers and the community. The program is open to Snellville-area residents aged 18 and older and covers topics such as domestic violence, traffic stops, building searches, and firearms safety. It includes a ride-along opportunity with a police officer. The academy is free, and applicants do not need to live within city limits. This year's theme was "Educating the Next Generation on Our Historic American Trails." The sisters, who are members of the Philadelphia Winn DAR chapter, received first place in the Fiber Arts/Embroidery category and were also awarded the prestigious Evelyn Cole Peters Award, considered a "Best of Show" recognition by the American Heritage Committee.   Story 5: grant   Georgia Gwinnett College (GGC) is one of 34 U.S. colleges and universities awarded a grant from the U.S. Department of State's IDEAS Program to expand study abroad programs worldwide. GGC's winning proposal, created by Dr. Neville Forlemu and Dr. Boyko Gyurov, aims to expand learning abroad to other continents and involve more minority students, especially African American males, who typically don't participate in study abroad programs. With the $35,000 grant, GGC plans to extend its study abroad opportunities to Cameroon in Central Africa, fostering strong academic and logistical connections to make the program sustainable and accessible to a broader student population. The IDEAS Program aims to diversify and increase U.S. students' study abroad experiences worldwide.   Story 6: lincoln   Lincoln Property Company Southeast is now managing the retail area of Suwanee Town Center, including four buildings with a total of 58,634-square-feet of space. Major tenants in the area include Tequila Mama Taqueria, Mellow Mushroom, and Planet Smoothie. The company is also taking over management of retail areas in two other properties: the Shoppes at 319 West Ponce in Decatur and Glenwood Place in Grant Park. Pope's impressive record includes winning the Class 7A state championship at 144 pounds with a 50-11 record. In his sophomore year, he secured third place at the state championship at 138 pounds and achieved a record of 34-5. With his strong performances in high school, Pope looks forward to continuing his wrestling career at the collegiate level.   Story 9: Wilkins   Isaiah Wilkins, a former standout player at the University of Virginia, has been promoted to assistant coach of the men's basketball program. Wilkins previously served as a graduate assistant at Virginia for two seasons after completing his professional basketball career. As a player, he contributed to the Cavaliers' success with two ACC regular-season titles, one ACC Tournament title, and four NCAA tournament appearances. He was recognized as ACC Defensive Player of the Year in 2018 and achieved several defensive team honors. Wilkins has been actively involved in player development, scouting, recruiting, and video analysis during his time on the coaching staff. Rasheed Joseph, a 20-year-old resident of Stonecrest, was shot in the chest and robbed of his money during what was reported as a trip to purchase furniture in the Snellville area. The incident occurred on July 9 when a man entered the vehicle and shot Joseph. The victim's mother fled the scene and sought help at a Chevron Gas Station, where Joseph received medical attention but ultimately succumbed to his injuries and passed away. While investigators have not ruled out a potential drug connection, they are actively pursuing all leads. The mother stated that they were visiting McCalla Court for furniture, but the presence of drugs has not been confirmed. The mother described the shooter as a skinny Black man in his early 20s, while another man emerged from the woods carrying two handguns. The investigation is ongoing, and police are urging anyone with information to come forward...…..read more on this at gwinnettdailypost.com     STORY 2: lawrenceville   Lawrenceville city officials have announced a significant reorganization of the city's administrative leadership. The restructuring involves personnel taking on new roles, joining the executive management team, and having new supervisors. The changes aim to enhance efficiency, accountability, and community engagement. One key change involves splitting the assistant city manager position into two roles. Barry Mock, the current assistant city manager and public works director, will now become the assistant city manager for community development. Michael Fischer, previously with the city of Roswell, has been hired as the assistant city manager for operations. Additionally, several other officials, including the city engineer and police chief, will join the executive management team. The reorganization also includes the creation of new positions and departments to streamline operations and better serve the community. Story 3:  1500 Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) held its annual new teacher orientation to welcome over 1,500 new educators ahead of the upcoming 2023-2024 school year. The event took place at the Gas South Convention Center, and participants included both newcomers to the teaching profession and experienced educators new to GCPS. Superintendent Calvin Watts encouraged the teachers to strive for excellence and create a welcoming and inspiring environment for students to reach their full potential. Pre-planning for staff development will begin on July 24, and students are scheduled to return to classrooms on August 2. New and veteran teachers expressed their excitement about joining GCPS and making a positive impact on students' lives. He will be running for the City Council Post 1 seat, currently held by Councilman Glenn Martin, who will not seek re-election. Johnson plans to step down from his role at Explore Gwinnett to focus on his campaign. His platform includes advocating for increased housing options, attracting new businesses, supporting existing businesses, and promoting the growth and development of downtown Lawrenceville and the Depot District. Johnson and his wife have been Gwinnett County residents for over 33 years and have been actively involved in community organizations and initiatives. He has received the endorsement of Councilman Martin, who recognizes his dedication and qualifications to serve Lawrenceville.   Story 5: matthews   Regina Matthews, a Gwinnett County Magistrate Judge, has officially launched her campaign for a seat on the Gwinnett Superior Court. With endorsements from prominent figures like Chuck Efstration, Jasmine Clark, and Nikki Merritt, Matthews has already raised $29,000 for her campaign. She emphasizes her commitment to upholding the highest standards of justice and offers a record of impartially and effectively enforcing the law. Matthews has served in various legal roles, including as a law clerk and a senior staff attorney. She pledges to prioritize fairness, impartiality, and equal justice under the law, advocating for equal and unbiased treatment for all individuals in the legal system.   Story 6:  neuro   Dr. Betsy Grunch of Gainesville, inspired by her mother's tragic paralysis, pursued a career as a brain and spinal cord surgeon. Her mother, Betty Uriegas, was a police officer who was shot while on duty, causing a car accident that left her paralyzed from the neck down. Betsy, determined to make a difference, studied for 15 years to become a neurosurgeon. She currently works at Northeast Georgia Medical Centre. Betsy's experience caring for her mother motivated her to assist with daily activities and develop a passion for healthcare. She has no regrets about her demanding career, emphasizing the opportunity to intervene in someone's health and make a life-changing difference. The suspect stole a 2009 Mercedes E350 from a gas station near Sugarloaf Mills Mall. Despite the owner not knowing the vehicle's VIN or license plate number, an analyst at the center used a database to locate the license plate. The stolen car was found abandoned on State Route 316, and the suspect, Kattie Chantel McKoy, was identified through Georgia DOT cameras and arrested for felony theft by taking. The incident occurred last week, and the suspect entered an Audi A7 and a Porsche Macan in the driveway. The owner, who was on vacation, received an alert from his Ring camera and contacted the police. The vehicles had been locked, but the suspect used an unspecified device to unlock them. Police advise vehicle owners to take precautions such as locking doors, activating security systems, avoiding leaving valuables in cars, and parking in well-lit areas. Anyone with information about the suspect is urged to contact the police or Atlanta Crime Stoppers. Story 3:  missing The Duluth Police Department is seeking public assistance in locating a "critical missing" 16-year-old named Christian Guinto, who has medical conditions. He was last seen at Publix on Buford Highway at around 3 p.m. on Thursday. Possible sightings have been reported along Bunten Road, Buford Highway, and Duluth Highway, which are routes to his neighborhood near Bunten Road and Duluth Highway. Guinto is described as 6 feet tall, weighing 200 pounds, and was last seen wearing grey sweat shorts and a blue zip-up sweatshirt. The delegation, consisting of 20 members, including police chiefs, sheriffs, and other law enforcement officials, received intensive public safety leadership training from top Israeli police executives. The program focused on best practices, technology in policing, community policing, and building safer neighborhoods for minority communities. GILEE has been organizing such exchanges for three decades, with nearly 1,250 law enforcement executives graduating from the program. The initiative aims to enhance public safety through partnerships between law enforcement agencies and the private sector.   Story 5: kiosk   The Gwinnett County Tax Commissioner's Office has installed its 10th car tag renewal kiosk, which is also the first one located in a metro Atlanta Publix store. The kiosk, situated at the Publix on Centerville Highway in Snellville, allows vehicle owners in Gwinnett County to conveniently renew their automobile tags during store hours. The tax commissioner, Denise R. Mitchell, expressed satisfaction with providing efficient access to services for citizens and stated her commitment to ensuring such accessibility. Despite being announced during the Competitive Balance A round, Houck's selection marks the third time in the past two seasons and the 11th time since 2000 that a Gwinnett County graduate has been chosen in the first round. Houck, known for his talents as a quarterback in football as well, had committed to playing baseball at Mississippi State.   Story 8: zhang   Michael Zhang, a recent graduate from Norcross High School, is known for his basketball skills but also excels academically and possesses various talents. With a GPA of 4.8, Zhang is not only an exceptional basketball player but also a talented pianist, certified programmer, website and app developer, and runs his own sneaker business. He will be attending the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to continue both his basketball and academic pursuits. Zhang's offensive skills, including his 3-point shooting and ability to create space on the court, have earned him recognition. The incident occurred on June 6 when the man entered the store and used a copy of the victim's CITI Best Buy credit card to buy $4,200 worth of computers and tech support. The victim, who resides in South Carolina, had the original card in their possession at the time. The fraudulent purchases were discovered when the victim was notified of the transactions. The bank reversed the charges, and the victim reported the incident to both Best Buy and the police. Authorities have described the suspect as a medium-built Black man with a black beard and provided a detailed description of his appearance. Anyone with information about the suspect is urged to contact the Gwinnett County Police or Crime Stoppers.   STORY 2: jasper   Gwinnett County Commissioner Jasper Watkins has been appointed to the Association of County Commissioners of Georgia's (ACCG) Standing Committee on Mental Health & Substance Abuse. Watkins will co-chair the Public Safety Subcommittee alongside Cook County Commissioner Audie Rowe. The committee aims to provide policy guidance to county commissions in addressing mental health and substance abuse issues, particularly in relation to public safety. Watkins, a veteran, recognizes the importance of collaborating on solutions for these sensitive topics. The committee serves as an information clearinghouse for all counties in Georgia, providing resources and best practices. The committee held its first meeting in June to discuss reform efforts and the care of individuals with mental illness and substance addiction. Story 3: glasses Gwinnett County police are searching for two women who allegedly stole over $1,200 worth of designer sunglasses from a shop in the Mall of Georgia. The incident occurred on May 27 when the women entered the Sunglasses Hut and pretended to be interested in a few pairs of sunglasses. However, they reportedly took the glasses off the wall and fled the store without paying. The stolen sunglasses include Prada, Versace, and Burberry brands. Police have released surveillance images of the suspects and are seeking the public's assistance in identifying them. Sammon, a former president of the State Bar of Georgia, received the 2023 Distinguished Service Award during the State Bar's Annual Meeting on June 10. State officials are seeking a woman from Snellville, identified as Dayshanell Hewitt, who is accused of filing fraudulent insurance claims totaling nearly $2,500 for a child's surgery. The Georgia Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner, John F. King, stated that arrest warrants were issued against Hewitt on June 21, charging her with insurance fraud and forgery. According to King, Hewitt allegedly submitted three insurance claims to USAA Insurance Company in March 2022, claiming that her child had undergone surgeries that never actually took place. While two of the fraudulent medical invoices were approved, resulting in claim payments of approximately $2,500, investigators later determined that all three invoices were fraudulent. At present, Hewitt remains at large, and law enforcement authorities are actively seeking her arrest. He recorded impressive statistics with 46 tackles, including 10 for losses, nine sacks, 32 quarterback hurries, and five blocked kicks. Boulware's commitment adds to Vanderbilt's recruiting class as they look to strengthen their team for upcoming seasons.   Story 8: soccer   Remi Okunlola, a senior soccer player, had his interest in high school soccer sparked during the 2022 season when he watched his younger sister's games at Brookwood High School. As an Atlanta United Academy player, he hadn't previously played high school soccer, but he decided to join Brookwood for his senior year. The decision proved fruitful as Okunlola received multiple awards, including Class AAAAAAA Player of the Year, Daily Post Player of the Year, and Gwinnett Goal Club Class AAAAAAA Player of the Year. Despite not knowing what to expect, Okunlola aimed to have fun and ended up having a great season with the team. The motive for the shooting has not been disclosed, and the police have stated that it is an active investigation, refraining from sharing additional information at this time. The program is a collaborative effort involving the city, Impact 46, Central Gwinnett and Discovery high schools, and Hearts to Nourish Hope. The selected students will intern at various organizations, including the Aurora Theatre, Barrios Virguez Attorneys, and the city of Lawrenceville. Known for its revolving sushi service model, Kura Sushi offers over 140 authentic dishes, including nigiri, rolls, noodle dishes, and desserts. Guests can select sushi plates from the revolving sushi bar or place orders using touch panels at their tables. The orders are prepared and delivered to the table via the "sushi highway." The restaurant also features Kur-B the KuraBot, which assists waitstaff in delivering drink orders. Kura Sushi aims to provide an innovative and interactive dining experience, combining tradition and technology.     STORY 4: Art   The Hudgens Center for the Arts is hosting several visually exciting exhibitions this summer. One of them is "Patchwork: The Work of Krista M. Jones," featuring the vibrant and pattern-based murals and canvas paintings of Atlanta artist Krista Jones. The exhibition includes large and small paintings, soft relief sculptures, and installations that explore symbolism and the human experience. Another exhibition, "Transformation," showcases the works of 29 fiber artists from the Chattahoochee Handweavers Guild, including woven items, tapestries, and mixed media pieces. Additionally, the Hudgens Center presents "The Cup Show," displaying 141 ceramics pieces, each a unique drinking vessel. Daugherty, 57, was reported missing after he was last seen on a dock at Sunrise Cove Marina. A search was conducted, and his body was discovered in the lake on Tuesday afternoon. The Department of Natural Resources utilized side scan sonar to locate the body near the dock and his boat. These events include the Dacula Memorial Day Parade, a patriotic concert in Suwanee, a Memorial Day program and concert in Snellville, a ceremony in Sugar Hill, a remembrance event in Norcross, and the addition of a new name to the Gwinnett Fallen Heroes Memorial in Lawrenceville. Stone Mountain Park will also host a weekend-long Memorial Day commemoration with a salute to service members, fireworks, and performances by the Air National Guard Band of the South. Check gwinnettdailypost.com for more details     Story 3: kroger   Gwinnett County police are seeking the public's help in identifying a man accused of committing "quick change" thefts at Kroger stores along the east coast. The thefts occurred at two locations in Gwinnett County, specifically in Grayson and Loganville. The suspect has been involved in similar thefts at multiple Kroger stores over the past nine months. Described as a White male with a full dark beard, black leather jacket, and dark colored ball cap, the suspect engaged in a scheme where he would initially request a money transfer, then change his mind multiple times, ultimately stealing a lesser amount during the confusion. The event has been held for 29 years and is a tribute to those who have given their lives for the rights and freedoms enjoyed today. The parade takes place regardless of the weather conditions. Stay abreast of the latest on all our stories and events at gwinnettdailypost.com Story 5: update   In an update on a story we had earlier in the week, The double shooting in the Gwinnett Place area of Gwinnett County that resulted in the deaths of a man and a woman, is believed to be a domestic-related incident. Gwinnett County police responded to a report of a shooting at a home on Woodington Circle in Lawrenceville. The victims were identified as Christopher Farranto, 52, and Mirian Farranto, 35. The incident is suspected to have occurred around dawn, and no other suspects are believed to be involved. Three children were present during the shooting but were unharmed. The neighborhood is situated near the intersection of Club Drive and Pleasant Hill Road.       Story 6: principal   Lenny George has been appointed as the new principal of Parsons Elementary School in Gwinnett County. The school board approved his appointment, and he will be taking over from the retiring principal, Laura Clark. George has been part of Gwinnett County Public Schools since 2017, previously serving as an assistant principal at Summerour Middle School. He has a background in education dating back to 2006, starting as a mathematics teacher in Chicago. He also worked as a teacher development coach and seminar instructor in Atlanta.
