____________________ Mit Mani Matter, Reena Krishnaraja, Dabu Fantastic & Nadja Räss, Roman Nowka's Hot 3 & Stephan Eicher, little wings, Männerchor Schmaz, Einmund, Bonaparte & Sophie Hunger & Les soeurs dion, Darmflora, Copy & Paste, Jüre Walter & Jürg Bernet, Jugendjazzorchester.ch, Gabriel Mareque, Georg Brassens, Gerhard Ruiss, Jan Řepka, Bernhard Stirnemann, The bianca story feat. The Rolling Stone- Beggars Banquet  Decca (UK), London Records (US)Release Date: December 6, 1968 (UK), January 1969 (US)Beggars Banquet marked a decisive turning point for The Rolling Stones, signaling a return to the blues, country, and folk influences that first defined the band after the psychedelic detour of Their Satanic Majesties Request. Released in 1968, the album combines raw musicianship with more mature songwriting, as Mick Jagger and Keith Richards explored themes of politics, morality, and social unrest during one of the most turbulent years of the twentieth century. Songs such as "Sympathy for the Devil," "Street Fighting Man," and "Salt of the Earth" remain among the band's most enduring works, while Brian Jones added distinctive touches on slide guitar, harmonica, sitar, and percussion despite his declining role in the group. Producer Jimmy Miller and pianist Nicky Hopkins helped shape the album's earthy, organic sound. Beggars Banquet launched the Stones' greatest creative period, paving the way for Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers, and Exile on Main St., four albums that cemented their place among rock's greatest bands. On July 3, 1969, Brian Jones — the brilliant but troubled founding member of The Rolling Stones who helped shape the band's early sound through his adventurous blend of blues, rock, and world music influences — died at his home in Sussex, England at the age of 27. At the time of his death, Jones had only recently been dismissed from the band he created, as years of substance abuse, legal troubles, and growing tensions with Mick Jagger and Keith Richards had left him increasingly isolated from the group's creative direction. More than half a century later, Brian Jones -- who tragically became a member of the so-called "27 Club" when he died -- remains one of rock's most enigmatic pioneers, a gifted musician whose restless experimentation helped launch one of the greatest bands in history. The Author Events Series presents Bob Spitz | The Rolling Stones: The Biography In Conversation with Dan DeLuca  All great music is a threat. What left is there to say about The Rolling Stones? A hell of a lot, it turns out. Bob Spitz has brought his indefatigable energy and five decades of experiences in the fields and hollows of rock 'n' roll to bear on his five-year journey to reexamine one of popular music's greatest stories. There are myriad revisions to the conventional narrative which underscore just how in control of that narrative the band has been up to now-small example: no, Muddy Waters was not mopping the floors at Chess Records when the Stones showed up. But in a larger sense, as with the Beatles and Led Zeppelin, Spitz's greatest gift is for the big picture. He knows where the magic is, and why it is. He is as clear-eyed a connoisseur of the show business, the spectacle and the collateral damage of this whirlwind as anyone alive, and that lucid gaze pierces a lot of incrusted bullshit, but the ultimate goal is to connect with a creative force whose power shows no signs of fading, over sixty years on. At its heart the story is about two boys, Mick and Keith, and their unique, fraught, alchemical bond, often tested, never sundered. The Glimmer Twins. The bandmates, like Charlie Watts, who found their groove in relation to this double star made the trip intact, while those who struggled, like Brian Jones and Mick Taylor, were chewed up and spit out. This is a story with many dark corners, including a surprising number of deaths. But whether Jagger and Richards sold their souls to the devil is at the crossroads for blues greatness or just squeezed their heroes for every drop of inspiration, in the end their connection to their music and to each other put them in a category of one, where they very much remain. Bob Spitz is the award-winning author of the biographies The Beatles and Dearie: The Remarkable Life of Julia Child, both New York Times bestsellers, as well as six other nonfiction books and a screenplay. He helped manage Bruce Springsteen and Elton John at crucial points in their careers. He's written hundreds of major profiles of figures, ranging from Keith Richards to Jane Fonda, from Paul McCartney to Paul Bowles. Dan DeLuca is the pop music critic for the Philadelphia Inquirer. He's been writing about music and pop culture for the Inquirer and other outlets for more than three decades. He grew up at the Jersey Shore and is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania. He has interviewed Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Darryl Jones and saw the Charlie Watts Orchestra play at Pulsations nightclub in Glenn Mills, Pa. in 1986. Books will be available for purchase at the library on event night! All tickets are non-refundable. (recorded 4/28/2026)

Rock and roll has always had a shadow side, and Richard Syrett joins Jim to explore some of its strangest stories from his new book, Tales from the Rock and Roll Twilight Zone. From the roots of blues folklore and Robert Johnson's legendary crossroads tale to theories about the Beatles, “Paul is Dead,” and the eerie staying power of rock's greatest mysteries, Richard looks at why music history seems to attract so many strange rumors, unsettling coincidences, and unanswered questions. Jim and Richard also dig into the 27 Club, the tragic plane crash that changed Lynyrd Skynyrd forever, the mysteries surrounding Elvis Presley's final days, and the suspicious circumstances some have associated with the death of Rolling Stones founder Brian Jones. It is a wide-ranging conversation about fame, myth, tragedy, conspiracy, and the powerful hold these stories still have on music fans decades later. Bob Spitz has written major biographies of the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Bob Dylan, and now the Rolling Stones — but also, somehow, Ronald Reagan and Julia Child. In rock, his credentials were hard won: he started out hustling gigs for an unknown Bruce Springsteen for six years, moved on to handling Elton John's American business, and spent long enough in the world to find himself jamming with Paul McCartney and chatting with Bob Dylan on a stoop in the Village. The Reagan and Julia Child books are harder to explain, and perhaps that's the point—Spitz seems to do his best work when he has no business writing the book at all. Tyler and Bob discuss how the Stones became so great so quickly, what they added to the blues, how their melodies stack up against the Beatles', whether Exile on Main Street deserves its canonical status, which songs are most underrated, what Charlie Watts actually got out of playing in a rock band, the rise and fall of Brian Jones, how the Stones outlasted nearly everyone, the influence of Mick's London School of Economics training, why popular music has lost its cultural influence, what we should still be asking Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, whether the Beatles' breakup was good for the world, how senile Reagan really was in his second term and whether he was ever truly a communist, how good a cook Julia Child actually was, his next book on Lennon's second act, and much more.
