At over $5 trillion a year, it rivals the world's largest economies—and it's unsustainable. He lays out the case for urgent, common-sense reforms: Eliminate Pharmacy Benefit Manager (PBM) abuse that drives up prescription costs Achieve site neutrality so hospitals and independent providers are reimbursed fairly Cut red tape and restore competition by ending outdated Certificate of Need laws Unleash the power of Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) and patient-centered transparency Stop the government's overreach into your health decisions, exposed during COVID Congressman McCormick also warns of the broader national consequences if we don't act now—economic decline, loss of global influence, and the erosion of personal freedom. If you care about healthcare freedom, responsible spending, and protecting the American Dream, this is a must-listen episode.

What Can the Tea Party Teach Us About Today's Democratic Opposition? Ukraine's War of Attrition (with Brian Sack)

Sixteen years ago, CNBC commentator Rick Santelli stood on the floor of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange and delivered an impassioned rant against federal plans to bail out struggling homeowners. “Do we really want to subsidize the losers' mortgages?” he shouted, calling for a “Chicago Tea Party” to protest government intervention. That moment became the rallying cry for a movement that would reshape conservative politics, define opposition to the Obama presidency, and eventually evolve into the MAGA movement that has since won the White House twice.Lately, the Tea Party has been on my mind because of the way political movements are often dismissed by their opponents. In liberal circles, one word was frequently used to wave off the Tea Party: astroturf.“This isn't a grassroots movement,” critics insisted. “It's funded by billionaires to look like a populist uprising.” After all, it started on CNBC—hardly a blue-collar favorite. But that's not the whole story. And now, in 2024, astroturfing accusations are being hurled in the opposite direction.Last week, Republican Rep. Rich McCormick of Georgia faced a hostile crowd at a town hall in Roswell. The moment (captured in a widely circulated video) showed Democrats in his district voicing their frustration, pushing back forcefully against GOP policies. In response, conservatives dismissed the backlash as manufactured outrage, a coordinated effort by the so-called “deep state” to rattle the Republican establishment.Sound familiar? To understand whether today's Democratic anger is real or manufactured, it's worth looking back at how the Tea Party took shape. While Santelli's on-air rant is widely credited with sparking the Tea Party, grassroots opposition to Obama's policies had already begun. Keli Carender, a blogger in Seattle, organized an anti-stimulus protest even before Santelli's speech. Her February 2009 demonstration—dubbed the “Porkulus Protest”—drew about 100 people. But once Santelli's rant went viral, Tea Party protests exploded across the country. Social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter helped coordinate events, and by April's Tax Day, an estimated quarter-million people took to the streets in organized demonstrations. Conservative media played a crucial role in amplifying the movement. Fox News hosts like Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity championed Tea Party causes, helping grow its ranks. Soon, prominent Republican figures lent their support, though the movement remained largely decentralized.By the summer of 2009, as Obamacare made its way through Congress, Tea Party activists shifted their strategy. Instead of street protests, they flooded town halls, confronting Democratic lawmakers with fiery opposition. Videos of these clashes—angry constituents challenging their representatives—became a defining image of the movement. And electorally, the Tea Party had teeth. While it failed to topple the Republican establishment entirely (Mitt Romney still won the 2012 nomination), it helped flip House seats and push the GOP further to the right. What does the Tea Party teach us about today's Democratic opposition?* It's never too early to be angry. Santelli's rant came barely a month after Obama took office. Right now, Trump's disapproval ratings are rising, but Democrats haven't yet rallied around a singular issue.* Movements can make an impact—especially in the House. The Tea Party didn't need to control the White House to change the political landscape. A handful of flipped seats can shift the balance of power.* Dismissing protests as ‘astroturf' is risky. If the same kind of town hall showdowns seen in McCormick's district begin happening elsewhere, they could turn into a trend. The Tea Party was fueled by a raw, pent-up anger over fiscal conservatism. Many conservatives felt betrayed by their own party—George W. Bush had campaigned on balanced budgets, only to expand deficits through wars and bailouts. Obama's presidency, with its ambitious government programs, only amplified those frustrations. The question for Democrats now is: What's their version of that anger? If it's simply opposition to Trump, that's not enough. Even figures like Elon Musk—despised by many progressives—aren't sustainable political villains. “Musk sent another email” isn't a battle cry that will mobilize voters in the long run. That's why Democratic strategists should be tickled by what just happened in the House. They (impressively) passed a budget that, while avoiding direct mention of Medicaid, includes $880 billion in cuts overseen by the Energy and Commerce Committee—which just happens to control Medicaid. Why the cuts? Because fiscal hawks in the House need a way to offset the Trump tax cuts. For Democrats, that's a classic, politically potent message: Republicans are cutting your Medicaid to give tax cuts to the rich.If they can harness that into a movement—one that gets people angry enough to show up at town halls, knock on doors, and vote—then history might just be repeating itself.Podcast Chapters & Timecodes* 00:00:00 – Introduction* 00:01:58 – The Tea Party's Legacy and Lessons for Democrats* 00:14:55 – Dan Bongino Becomes FBI's Second-in-Command* 00:19:15 – MSNBC's Prime-Time Shake-Up & Network Struggles* 00:22:58 – NYC Mayor Eric Adams' Re-Election Challenges* 00:26:27 – Interview with Brian Sack on Ukraine & DEI Policies* 01:05:28 – Wrap-Up This is a public episode. It's Casual Friday! Emma speaks with Mike Figueredo of the Humanist Report to round up the week in news. Then, she's joined by Van Lathan of the Higher Learning podcast! First, Emma runs through updates on Trump's dropping popularity (thanks to Elon), budding GOP criticism of the Trump/Musk regime, Trump's dismantling of the FBI's Foreign Influence Task Force, Trump's funding freeze and mass firing, Elon's CPAC appearance, RFK's anti-vax maneuvers, Texas' (definitely unrelated) measles outbreak, Israel's best attempts to kill their Gaza ceasefire deal, and the confirmation of Kash Patel, also watching a flush-red MAGA district lay into Rep. Rich McCormick over Trump's insane executive coup. Mike Figueredo then joins, jumping right into his initial reactions to the Trump/Musk regime's sweeping destruction of the US government, before stepping back to expand a little on the particular insanity that is being a Democratic constituent at this point, with the overwhelming backlash to the impotence of Democratic Congresspeople finally boiling over at town halls and Democratic Leadership's media events. After expanding on the genuinely shocking rate at which Trump is executing the Project 2025 blueprint, Figueredo and Emma look to the impact of the Trump regime on emboldening cultures of bigotry in the US, from DHS' discrimination against queer folks to the suicide of a young Latina child after facing rampant anti-immigrant bigotry, before wrapping up the interview by emphasizing the need for the Democratic Party to advance an agenda of actual political change if they want to escape from the fascist quagmire of the last few election cycles. Van Lathan and Emma then dive deep into the state (surprisingly positive) of the Leftist media ecosystem, the utter failure of the Democratic Party to identify, speak to, or govern for their base, and why MAGA's obsession with liberal defectors is so enchanting to reactionary media figures. Lathan implores Emma to dip her podcasting toes into pop culture,  before wrapping up by touching on what he learned from covering Gaza. And in the Fun Half: Emma talks with Nora from Austin about Tim Pool's fiery foray into NASCAR sponsorships, before touching on Elon's CPAC meltdown and Rep. Greg Cesar's pushback to Elon's labor abuses. Kyle from Long Island unpacks RFK's lies about cell phone radiation, Leonard Peltier returns home, and conservatives help the media ponder whether a measles outbreak is actually that big of a deal, plus, your calls and IMs! Voting is a foundation of democracy and key to American power, but also a process that can be ugly and divisive. In what many believe to be the most politically charged election period in modern history, Fran Racioppi took a few minutes to sit down with Congressman Rich McCormick, Representative for Georgia's 7th district. Representative McCormick shared his Elementary Issues of A, B, C, D, E: the American dream, the border, crime, debt, education and energy; why it's dangerous to develop a culture of government giving, balancing compassion with security along our borders, and not hiding from the fact that America has real adversaries who seek to do us harm. It was a straightforward yet ingenious machine, embodying Ford's vision of simplicity and functionality. Ford built the vehicle on a lightweight steel frame powered by a two-cylinder, four-horsepower gasoline engine. This engine was a marvel of its time, featuring a design that would lay the groundwork for future automotive engineering. It had a belt-driven transmission with only two forward gears and no reverse, which was typical of the era's experimental vehicles. The Quadricycle's first journey took place on the cobblestone streets of Detroit, covering approximately three miles. The vehicle managed to reach a top speed of about 20 miles per hour, an impressive feat for its time. Despite the rough ride and the unpaved roads, Ford's invention performed admirably. The test drive was a success, and it proved to Ford and his supporters that gasoline-powered vehicles were a viable alternative to horse-drawn carriages. The Quadricycle itself, though primitive by modern standards, represented a quantum leap in automotive technology. It was a crucial step in the evolution of the automobile, showcasing the feasibility of internal combustion engines and highlighting the importance of innovative thinking and persistence. Ford's test drive on June 4, 1896, was not just a personal triumph but a significant turning point in the quest for practical and accessible personal transportation. Today, the Ford Quadricycle is celebrated as a historic artifact and a symbol of innovation. It is preserved and displayed at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan, where it continues to inspire new generations of engineers and inventors. The legacy of that early morning test drive lives on, a testament to the power of perseverance and the transformative impact of technological advancements.

Gunman Convicted Of Killing Car Dealership Co-Owner In Murder-For-Hire Plot Georgia lawmakers push immigration bills in response to UGA student's death Research reveals potential breakthrough in breast cancer treatment Plus, my conversation with Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on food products  from other stores. All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: TOM WAGES   STORY 1: Gunman Convicted Of Killing Car Dealership Co-Owner In Murder-For-Hire Plot A Gwinnett County jury has sentenced Lilburn resident Wesley "Draco" Vickers to life in prison without parole for his involvement in the murder-for-hire of Snellville car dealership owner Courtney Owens in late 2022. Vickers was found guilty of malice and felony murder, aggravated assault, and firearm possession charges. Prosecutors allege that Stoney Lamar Williams, Owens' business partner and ex-boyfriend, orchestrated the plot. Williams is set to stand trial in March. Vickers received an additional five-year sentence for possessing the murder weapon. Owens was fatally shot at Royal Court Motors, where she co-owned the dealership. The Gwinnett County District Attorney vowed to hold perpetrators of violence accountable. STORY 2: Georgia lawmakers push immigration bills in response to UGA student's death Following the tragic murder of 22-year-old Laken Riley in Athens, Georgia, discussions about immigration policy have been reignited in the state legislature. The suspect in Riley's killing, Jose Antonio Ibarra, is an undocumented immigrant with a history of legal issues. Governor Brian Kemp and other Republicans have blamed federal immigration policy, while Democrats accuse the GOP of politicizing the tragedy. Proposed legislation includes bills to refund property taxes for areas with lax law enforcement, penalize jailers for not reporting inmates' immigration status, and transfer soon-to-be-released undocumented inmates to sanctuary states. These bills have until Thursday to pass one chamber for a chance at becoming law this year. STORY 3: Research reveals potential breakthrough in breast cancer treatment New research suggests that breast cancer could be treated with a drug that mimics testosterone's effects, offering a potentially less toxic approach compared to traditional estrogen-blocking treatments. The drug enobosarm stimulates the androgen receptor, which has been found to suppress estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) breast cancer, the most common type. In a study involving 136 postmenopausal women with advanced ER+ breast cancer, enobosarm showed promising antitumor effects without causing adverse side effects or masculinizing symptoms. This novel hormonal strategy offers hope for a less debilitating form of treatment, with potential for further investigation in combination with other therapies.   We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We'll be right back. Break 2: INGLES 7   STORY 4: Gwinnett Educators Group Endorses Shana White In School Board District 3 Race The Gwinnett County Association of Educators (GCAE) announced its endorsement of veteran teacher Shana White in the District 3 race for the Gwinnett County Board of Education. The decision was based on White's dedication to public service, her recent teaching experience within GCPS classrooms, and her platform informed by those experiences. White, a third-generation educator, has taught at various schools within GCPS and currently works at the Kapor Foundation. The endorsement follows GCAE's previous endorsements for Leroy Ranel and Tarece Johnson-Morgan in other school board districts. While White secured GCAE's endorsement, other candidates in the District 3 race, such as Yanin Cortes and Steven Gasper, have received endorsements from Mary Kay Murphy and U.S. Rep. Rich McCormick, respectively. STORY 5: Georgia lawmakers hold out hope for bill that would restrict publication of mugshots The practice of sheriff's offices posting mugshots of booked individuals has faced criticism due to its potential consequences, including job loss and reputational damage, especially for those not convicted of a crime. Representative Roger Bruce proposed House Bill 882 to restrict mugshot posting until conviction, with fines for non-compliance. However, a similar bill by Representative Jordan Riley has different provisions, such as delaying release until the sheriff deems it safe, raising concerns about restricting access for journalists and potential workload issues for sheriff's offices. While there is bipartisan support for such measures, they face challenges in committee and raise debates over free speech and the protection of innocent individuals.   STORY 6: LEAH MCGRATH And now here is my conversation with Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on food products from other stores.   STORY 7: LEAH MCGRATH ***LEAH MCGRATH INERVIEW***   We'll have final thoughts after this.   Break 4: HENRY CO SHERIFFS OFFICE   Signoff – Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Gwinnett Daily Post podcast.
