The land bank aims to redevelop blighted and delinquent properties for housing and economic development. Cherokee County approved the resolution on February 18, and other cities, including Canton and Woodstock, are discussing participation. Holly Springs tabled its decision on March 3 to allow more time for review. If approved, the resolution would direct staff to collaborate with the county and municipalities on forming the land bank, which would be governed by a board appointed by member jurisdictions. STORY 2: Cherokee County Historic Store Could Be Home to a Coffee Shop The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners will hold a public hearing on April 15 to consider a request from We2Friends Coffeehouse to establish a coffeehouse and gift shop in the historic J.B. Mathis General Store building on Union Hill Road. Built in 1950, the building received a Historic Preservation Award last year. The proposed legacy use would allow the business to open without rezoning. Plans include nine parking spaces, one ADA space, and no deceleration lane due to low traffic. The coffeehouse aims to preserve local history while fostering community with locally roasted coffee and gifts. Critics raised concerns about student privacy and potential racial bias in surveillance. A separate bill offering tax credits for firearm storage devices also passed. Both measures now head to the Senate for consideration. STORY 5: GDOT Awards $36.5M Contract to Widen Bells Ferry Road The Georgia Department of Transportation has awarded a $36.5 million contract to widen Bells Ferry Road in Cherokee County. This refund, pending board approval, follows years of scrutiny over Taylor’s collection of over $425,000 in passport fees as personal income. The issue also sparked a Georgia Bureau of Investigation probe and legislative efforts to increase transparency. Taylor’s office has faced additional criticism for severe dysfunction, including a botched software change in 2024 that disrupted court operations. Despite these challenges, Taylor was reelected in 2024. STORY 2: Historic McAfee House Sold for $1, will be Relocated The historic Robert McAfee house, built in the 1840s, will be relocated to Ball Ground, Georgia, after being sold for $1 by Cobb Landmarks to Lee and Brittani Lusk, experienced renovators of historic homes. The Lusks plan to restore the home as a private residence, adhering to historic preservation standards. The move, costing an estimated $75,000-$100,000, with renovations around $200,000, must be completed by May 15. Originally located in Cobb County, the house has significant historical value, including its use as a Civil War headquarters. A preservation easement will protect its historic integrity. STORY 3: Cobb Eyes 2026 SPLOST Vote Cobb County is considering a new 1% SPLOST package to fund infrastructure starting in 2028, with voters deciding in November 2026. The current $750 million SPLOST cycle ends in December 2027. Commissioners aim to finalize project lists by April 2026, focusing on road improvements, stormwater infrastructure, sidewalks, and community projects. Rising costs from inflation may push unfinished 2022 SPLOST projects into the new package. Public feedback sessions are planned for early 2026. In *Dias v. Boone*, the court reversed a lower court's decision granting Abby Boone equitable caregiver status over Michelle Dias’s child, ruling the law didn’t apply as Boone’s relationship with the child predated the law. While the justices questioned the law’s constitutionality regarding parental rights, they did not strike it down, instead issuing a narrow ruling specific to this case. STORY 2: Man Charged With Murder After Shooting at Cherokee County Home A man, David Daniel, 44, has been arrested and charged with murder after Michael Kyle Reid, 42, was found dead from a gunshot wound in a carport on North Lake Drive near Canton on Monday night. Daniel is being held without bond at the Cherokee County Adult Detention Center as the investigation continues. The USPS Board of Governors will begin searching for his successor. DeJoy, whose tenure was marked by controversy, implemented modernization efforts to cut costs by $4 billion annually and increase revenue by $5 billion. Despite these changes, USPS expects a $6.9 billion net loss in fiscal year 2025. Seniors 62+ with a valid homestead exemption for five years now qualify for a 100% school tax exemption, per Senate Bill 388. Additionally, House Bill 581 introduces a statewide floating homestead exemption for fire district and city taxes. Residents are encouraged to apply to reduce their tax burden. Today is Wednesday, December 11th and Happy birthday to Nikki Six ***12.11.24 - BIRTHDAY – NIKKI SIX*** I’m Keith Ippolito and here are your top stories presented by KIA Mall of Georgia. North Gwinnett's Diya Patel Graduates From Kennesaw State At Age 19 Okefenokee Swamp supporters urge aggressive refuge expansion to stop mining Gwinnett DA's Office sets national trend with FBI training award Plus, Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on picky toddlers. All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: 07.14.22 KIA MOG STORY 1: Early Graduate: North Gwinnett's Diya Patel Graduates From Kennesaw State At Age 19 Diya Patel, a 19-year-old graduate of Kennesaw State University, earned her psychology degree with honors while balancing a packed schedule of coursework, community contributions, and research. Driven by her dream of becoming a physician, Patel accelerated her studies, taking full course loads year-round to graduate early. She was an active leader on campus, serving as president of the Honors Advisory Leadership Council and founding organizations like the KSU chapter of It’s On Us to combat sexual assault. Patel also engaged in undergraduate research, volunteered with social service groups aiding refugees and unhoused people, and worked at an urgent care facility while honing her multilingual skills. Passionate about education, healthcare, and sustainable development, she aims to continue her global volunteer efforts alongside her medical career, inspired by the diverse, supportive community she found at KSU. STORY 2: Okefenokee Swamp supporters urge aggressive refuge expansion to stop mining The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) has proposed a 22,000-acre expansion of the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge to protect the area through land purchases or conservation easements with willing landowners. The plan has garnered strong support from environmental advocates, who are urging the FWS to expand even further to permanently block mining projects near the refuge, including a controversial titanium mine by Twin Pines Mineral. Opponents of the mine argue it could harm water levels, wildlife, and the ecosystem, while Twin Pines claims the project would have no negative impact. While the expansion won't directly influence Georgia's permitting decisions, it reflects a broader effort to ensure long-term protection of this vital blackwater swamp. Local and state officials have also rallied in opposition to the mine, calling for stronger safeguards for the swamp's unique environment. STORY 3: Gwinnett DA's Office sets national trend with FBI training award This week, the Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office became the first DA's office in the U.S. to receive the Agency Trilogy Award from FBI-LEEDA, recognizing their entire command staff's completion of leadership courses. While many law enforcement agencies have earned this award, Gwinnett's achievement is unique among DA offices. The award highlights their commitment to professional development and leadership, aligning with DA Patsy Austin-Gatson's vision for serving the community. The training, which can be completed in about a month, enhances leadership skills and ethics, benefiting the office and its investigators. Determined to reclaim her life, she not only returned to running, completing the Peachtree Road Race a year later, but also pursued a college degree at 47. Inspired by her experience and the young man responsible for the crash, she enrolled in political science to understand and potentially reform the justice system. Rantamaki's journey highlights the importance of community support and her desire to contribute positively, aiming to work with nonprofits aiding young or incarcerated individuals. STORY 5: Seckinger High School A State Finalist In Samsung's National STEM Competition Seckinger High School is among 300 U.S. public schools, and one of seven in Georgia, competing for the $100,000 grand prize in the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow STEM Competition. The competition encourages students in grades 6-12 to use STEM for innovative solutions to local issues, with this year's focus on school safety, climate crisis, and mental health. The funds include $700,000 donated to specific nonprofits and $108,000 for the match pool, which will proportionally match the nonprofits' earnings up to 10%. Significant contributors, including Walton Communities and several businesses, helped expand the match pool goal from $50,000 to over $100,000. The participating nonprofits covered diverse areas like arts, education, health, housing, and public safety. Prosecutors maintain Cox's alcohol consumption is central to the case, while the defense claimed unsafe intersection conditions contributed to the crash. Judge Kimberly Childs denied the defense's request to dismiss the DUI and vehicular homicide charges.
