Gordon Raphael is best known for producing Is This It and Room On Fire by The Strokes and Regina Spektor's ingenious Soviet Kitsch. He was born in New York, grew up in Seattle, and now lives in West Yorkshire, UK. From the age of 13, Gordon has been a keyboard player and later became obsessed with analog synthesizers, recording, and songwriting. His band Sky Cries Mary played a form of tribal space rock, with a 1960s-style multi-projector light show during the grunge scene in Seattle. This summer (2024) he released his 12th solo album, now streaming worldwide. Gordon's memoir, The World is Going To Love This (Up From The Basement With THE STROKES) was published in London by Wordville Press in 2022. Stories in his book include meeting Wendy Carlos and Dr. Robert Moog, detailed conversations from the recording sessions for Is This It, working with Ian Brown, Skin, The Libertines, Ian Astbury, and many others. Gordon has always taken a unique approach in his musical tastes as well as his production methods— which have kept him well outside of the traditional music industry! IN THIS EPISODE, YOU'LL LEARN ABOUT: Working on your own music vs. working on music from others Being critical of your own music Dealing with rejection Pushing forward even when you don't have everything figured out Perfectionism vs. control Finding the magic in raw recordings Working with The Strokes Getting the vocal sound of The Stokes Using saturation during the tracking stage Getting tight drum sounds The benefits of recording live-off-the-floor His special drum room mic technique Having a minimalistic approach, even when working with lots of equipment How he tackles compression in his mixes Embracing imperfections To learn more about Gordon Raphael, visit: https://www.gordotronic.com/ For tips on how to improve your mixes, visit https://masteryourmix.com/ Looking for 1-on-1 feedback and training to help you create pro-quality mixes? On Philosophy and the Mirror of Nature (1979), Part I: "Our Glassy Essence." "The mind" seems to be an unavoidable part of our basic conceptual vocabulary, but Rorty thinks not, and he wants to use the history of philosophy as a kind of therapy to show that many of our seemingly insoluble problems like the relation between mind and body are a result philosophical mistakes by Descartes, Locke, and Kant. With guest Stephen Metcalf of Slate's Culture Gabfest podcast. End song: "Wall of Nothingness" from Sky Cries Mary from This Timeless Turning (1994). Listen to Mark's interview with the band's frontman, Roderick Romero, in Nakedly Examined Music ep. 9. Please support PEL!
Roderick Wolgamott Romero founded and fronted the Seattle 90s space rock band Sky Cries Mary. So how does a poet get a band? Is a poet's process different from a typical lyricist's? We discuss "Gliding" from Taking the Stage Live: 1997–2005 (2011), "December Snow" from Roderick's in-progress project One Point Moment Still (featuring Romanian techno duo We'd), and "Queen of Slug Theater" from Moonbathing on Sleeping Leaves (1997). We also listen to "You Are" from Sky Cries Mary's final studio album, Small Town (2007), and the opening/closing music is "Walla Walla" from A Return to the Inner Experience (1993). I've known Roderick from Sky Cries Mary since I was 19. Way prior to my even considering doing music or following my dreams to be an artist. He was so far ahead that arena. That being said I know that Roderick definitely inspired me and I still follow ideas he shared with me way back when. I've always loved his ability to follow his spirit and boldly put himself and his art out there. I really needed to touch base with this person who reminding me to dream and see where the universe takes you. Don't choke hold your wishes but just toss them out there and wait for the magic to arrive! Thank you Roderick for continuing to astound and amaze me!
It's becoming more of a trend at LTA studios that I've been programming the show's discussions based on the suggestions of my co-presenters, rather than finding a mutually loved record. So it goes with episode 52. Wasn't shore whether to call the show Portis Attack or Massive Head!!! I am joined by John Ross, the manager of the wonderful Facebook page "Feed My Ears", and Shooting the Shit regular, Tim Merrill to discuss Portishead's "Dummy" and Massive Attack's "Mezzanine" - two albums I never thought I'd be talking about on this podcast. I confess the whole trip hop movement passed me by in the nineties, but I am truly grateful to John Ross for telling me to get out of my musical comfort zone and discuss these two records. I think we had a fascinating conversation as we touched upon issues such as whether sometimes music has to have a context to appeal, or whether the music itself evokes images. Record scratching aside, was Dummy just a traditional pop or soul record with nineties production values? What did we actually think of these records - do we love those albums? Tune in and find out. Eric Reanimator once again contributes his segment more to discuss a band he loves rather than a specific album. This time around he talks about Sky Cries Mary, a perfect companion piece to this episode's albums. If you’ve been enjoying the show, please pass the word that the show exists to your music loving friends. I'd love to expand the audience a little and hopefully, the range of albums discussed can appeal to more folks.
