For decades, the innovative guitarist Marc Ribot has been a first-call session musician, lending his singular instrumental voice to recordings by Tom Waits, Marianne Faithfull, Elvis Costello, T-Bone Burnett and many more. On his brand new album, Map Of A Blue City (New West Records), Ribot adds his actual voice to the music for his first ever vocal album, one that took roughly 30 years to finally see the light of day. In our conversation, he talks about working with the late, great Hal Willner (who worked on the early stages of ...Blue City), the poetry of Allen Ginsberg, and why Tom Waits is such a uniquely effective bandleader. Karni Arieli is a photographer. Her lockdown project Eye Mama @eyemamaproject asked photographer mums all over the world to share honest pictures of their own experiences of motherhood. She has just had it published as a book. She also makes short films, commercials and music videos and has recently had a BAFTA nomination for a film about the life of a salmon, played by a woman and narrated by Marianne Faithfull.Karni and I talked about how showing our children our weakensses is important and she shared how her first experience of motherhood was extremely tough as she had a herniated disc and couldn't walk or lift her baby for the first 8 months of his life.Karni also shared her life motto that she's passed on to her children: 'Do it like you mean it'. And she described her love of 'awe walks' with her children, which I am defintiely going to practise on the walk to school from now on!https://www.instagram.com/eyemamaproject/?hl=enhttps://eyemamaproject.com/Spinning Plates is presented by Sophie Ellis-Bextor, produced by Claire Jones and post-production by Richard Jones.

Lorenzen, Dirk www.deutschlandfunk.de, Sternzeit
We live in revolutionary times, whether we're ready or not. Marc Eliot Stein urges peace activists around the world to find common ground and act decisively against the rising toxicity of the international war machine. We talk about South Africa, Ireland, Mikhail Gorbachev and the shocking arrest of student protestors all over the USA in March 2025. Musical excerpt: "Broken English" by Marianne Faithfull.
Send us a message, so we know what you're thinking! This episode, we look back at two hugely influential women artists – Patti Smith, whose 1975 “Horses” album inspired so many artists, and Marianne Faithfull, whose passing in January, 2025, is a huge loss. “Horses”, with its confrontational approach - “Jesus died for somebody's sins, but not mine” - changed the landscape of rock music for the next few decades. Produced by John Cale, of Velvet Underground fame, the album opened the door for so many women, including Blondie and so many English punk and new wave bands. We talk about why we like this album, its influential impact, and how Patti Smith developed over later years. Marianne Faithfull has long been one of our favourites, and we talked about “Broken English” in Season 3. (If you haven't heard that episode, here's the link.) Tributes have come from every corner of the industry, all saying one thing – Marianne was inspirational to everyone she worked with, from The Rolling Stones to Metallica to Nick Cave and Warren Ellis. Banging our own drum for a moment, we've just been named as one of the top Australian Music Podcasts by monitoring service, Feedspot, which compiles the most comprehensive list of Australian Music Podcasts on the web. Great subjects. Great episode. Enjoy. “Never apologize, never explain - didn't we always say that? Well, I haven't, and I don't.” - the late, great Marianne FaithfullFew women in rock-and-roll history embody the idea of, “Don't be the rock star's girlfriend, BE the rock star” like this week's Doll. This week we remember singer, actress, fashion icon, and “queen of the underground,” Marianne Faithfull. Marianne refused to be just another pretty face in the ‘60s hit parade. She refused to be called a “survivor” - but let's face it, she was. Over and over again, she came back from the brink of destruction. She forged ahead each time, having been better for it. Through all her trials and troubles, she held her head high and never lost her spark - gotta love a woman who hangs a portrait of her ex over her toilet! Hear about Marianne's incredible life on the Dolls Pod, available wherever you stream your podcasts

Subscriber-only episodeSend us a textOne of the last projects recorded by singer/actress Marianne Faithfull (who passed away in January) was a 2021 spoken word album of English Romantic poetry, including a hauntingly beautiful 12-minute recitation of Tennyson's “Lady of Shalott.” After exploring Faithfull's passion for (and family connections to) classic literature, Amy finds new meaning in this poem about an exiled woman fated to forever view life through a mirror's reflection. This episode includes accounts of several other doomed and exiled noblewomen in history — Lucrezia de Medici and Marguerite de la Rocque — and the books their lives inspired.Mentioned in this episode:She Walks in Beauty by Marianne Faithfull“As Tears Go By” by Marianne Faithfull“The Lady of Shalott” by Alfred, Lord TennysonVenus in Furs by Leopold von Sacher-MasochVenus in Furs by The Velvet UndergroundThe Marriage Portrait by Maggie O'FarrellLucrezia de MediciPortrait of Lucrezia de Medici at North Carolina Museum of Art“My Last Duchess” by Robert BrowningIsola by Allegra GoodmanMarguerite de la RocqueThe Heptameron by Marguerite de NavarreFor episodes and show notes, visit: LostLadiesofLit.comDiscuss episodes on our Facebook Forum. Dive into the wild world of folk legend Marianne Faithfull with Neeley and Chris on THE CLASSIC METAL SHOW in an episode that's as outrageous as the rumors it discusses. They give a comedic tribute to her music, admitting they're clueless about her tunes, yet they dive deep into her supposed wild night with Mick Jagger and the infamous Mars Bar incident. Explore her unlikely crossover with Metallica, and laugh or gasp at the tales that might just tarnish or enhance her legacy. Is this the rock 'n' roll lore you've never heard or just another myth in the music world? Is Marianne Faithfull's story truly bizarre or just rock 'n' roll? In this episode we're joined by music-biz legend Danny Goldberg to discuss his dealings with Led Zeppelin and Kurt Cobain — and the school days he spent with the great Gil Scott-Heron. Danny takes us back to his short-lived stint at Berkeley and his first port of call on returning to his native New York: clerking at trade bible Billboard, a job that led to the publication of his report on 1969's Woodstock festival. From there we jump to the three years our guest spent working for Led Zep — first as their press agent, then as V-P of their label Swan Song. We revisit the band's conquest and domination of '70s America and hear hair-raising tales of Page, Plant, Bonzo, Peter Grant and Richard Cole... as well as Danny's 1976 exit from the band's dark vortex. The story of how Nirvana came to be managed by Danny's company Gold Mountain prompts thoughts on Kurt Cobain and mention of the 2019 memoir (Serving the Servant) our guest wrote about him. Danny brings his management and record-label story up to date by previewing the new album by his clients the Waterboys. The week's new audio interview takes us back to the '60s and to Danny's reminiscences of the young Gil Scott-Heron, who can be heard talking in 1978 to Mark "Radio Pete" Bliesener. The second of two clips — about Richard Nixon — brings us to the shocking present moment of Donald Trump's and Elon Musk's unprecedented assault on American democracy. After a tribute to the departed Marianne Faithfull — heard talking about the brilliant Broken English album in a short audio clip from 2014 — Jasper quotes from a 2023 Simon Reynolds article about A.I. and music journalism. Pieces discussed: Woodstock: Peace Mecca, Led Zeppelin: Under The Hood – A Backstage Chronicle of the Historic 1975 Tour, Led Zeppelin: Danny Goldberg's Hideaway, Danny Goldberg: Serving the Servant – Remembering Kurt Cobain (Ecco), Gil Scott-Heron audio (1978), Growing Up With Gil Scott-Heron: In Loving Memory, Marianne Faithfull audio (2014) and I'm a Noted Music Critic. Discovered at a Rolling Stones party at the age of 17, Marianne Faithfull broke out in the early '60s with the Jagger/Richards song "As Tears Go By." Faithfull's liaison with Mick Jagger kept her in the public eye. In the '70s, she struggled with addiction, but she made a triumphant comeback in her 30s, and became a critically acclaimed rock cabaret singer. Also, critic-at-large John Powers reviews the Brazilian film I'm Still Here, which he describes as a "moving, inspiring, beautifully made story about learning to confront tyranny."Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

Brian and Jason kick things off with a look at why Gen Z grads are getting fired just months after landing jobs and a curiously viral declassified CIA sabotage guide. Speaking of sabotage, U.S. students are struggling with their lowest reading scores in decades, raising questions about the future workforce. Meanwhile, Google Maps' controversial renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to “Gulf of America” for U.S. users has sparked some amusing geopolitical tit-for-tats. In the AI wars, OpenAI is fuming over claims that DeepSeek trained its models using OpenAI's own stolen data—ironic, given OpenAI's history of scraping the internet. As if that weren't enough, California's Attorney General warns AI companies that nearly everything they're doing might be illegal, while the Copyright Office suggests AI copyright issues were settled way back in 1965. Oh, and OpenAI is now in the nuclear weapons game. What could possibly go wrong? In tech and business news, CVS is making customers jump through app hoops to unlock cabinets, Uber claims it's the victim of an elaborate fake crash scheme, and Tesla promises a robotaxi business and humanoid robots in 2025—though Musk admits current Teslas will need new hardware to achieve full self-driving. Whole Foods workers have formed their first union since Amazon took over, and MoviePass is considering a pivot to crypto, because of course it is. Meanwhile, Elon Musk's ventures keep making headlines, and Waymo's driverless taxis are facing vandalism in Southern California. Law enforcement in California is also in hot water, having misused state databases over 7,000 times last year. For media lovers, Star Trek: Section 31 is on the horizon, while The Expanse‘s first three seasons are vanishing from Amazon soon. Behind the Music is back, and Ladies & Gentlemen… 50 Years of SNL Music offers a deep dive into the show's musical legacy. On the gaming front, classic titles like Spaceship Warlock and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy are getting attention alongside newly accessible archives of 1,500 classic gaming magazines. The Night Agent Season 2 is here and it sucks, and Amazon is hiking the price of its Music Unlimited subscriptions. Finally, the episode wraps with a nod to Marianne Faithfull's passing and China's new “magic beans” shaking up American markets—because, in this chaotic world, even the beans are making headlines because AI wrote this terrible summary.Sponsors:Factor - Get started at FactorMeals.com/grumpy50off and use code grumpy50off to get 50% off your first box plus free shipping. Just like my cover show series, I have another folder where I throw in some tracks that I’ve listened to over the course of my day to day life. They’re primrily the vinyl I’ve either recently acquired or have pulled out of the archives. The Great Hudson Basement Excavation continues to influence these shows, but there’s also plenty of albums that I haven’t thrown on the turntable for quite some time. This show is also inspired by this week’s death of Marianne Faithfull. She lived quite the life. Discovered at a party by Rolling Stones manager Andrew Loog Oldham, she had a British hit with the Jagger/Richards tune “As Tears Go By”. She famously dated Mick Jagger for a number of years, but had to fight him and Keith to get her share of songwriting credit for “Sister Morphine”. After breaking up with Mick, she had a decade of addiction that saw her homeless for a period of time before coming back with 1979’s hit album Broken English. Our thoughts go out to her family, friends, and fans. For more info, including setlists, head to http://scotthudson.blogspot.com

Rumer joins Anita Rani to talk about her life and music and to perform live in the studio.Afghanistan's women's cricket team have played their first match since being exiled three years ago. Cricket commentator Alison Mitchell and Firoza Amiri from the squad discuss the game and their fight for official ICC recognition. Are people better served by sexual assault referral centres than by self- swabbing in cases of alleged rape? Tana Adkin KC says we should be careful. Katie White is the co-founder of Enough, who have developed these kits and currently running a pilot project in Bristol. They've given away 7000 in just 12 weeks. The two of them are in the Woman's Hour studio to discuss.Actor and comedian Kerry Godliman, is best known for her portrayal of Lisa Johnson, the deceased wife of Ricky Gervais' character Tony in the hit Netflix series After Life. She now returns to the stage with her new stand-up show Bandwidth – on being a middle age woman – everything from parenting teenagers, to considering dealing HRT on the black market to losing her mum bag. Today we sadly lost the legendary Marianne Faithfull, so in tribute we are resharing this episode from 2016 with Emma Swift celebrating Faithfull's classic album 'Broken English'. ---- Queen of the Sadcore Bangers Emma Swift returns to the show to talk about Marianne Faithfull's brittle, confronting classic ‘Broken English'. Faithfull started her career being exploited as a folk-pop starlet, hitting rock bottom with drugs and homelessness and then taking control of her life and identity with this album. Emma and I talk about the cock forrest of the punk / new wave scene, how women are often written out of pop history, the inappropriate way Emma discovered the album, how it's influencing the shift in her music from despair to rage, and more.
