Do you need a hand with that? The NSFW Irina Palm (2007) was directed by Sam Garbarski and stars 1960s icon, Marianne Faithfull as Maggie, a middle aged woman who turns to sex work to raise money for her grandson's medical treatment. Adopting the name Irina Palm, the service she provides is a very limited one and is such that she never has to change out of her floral overall. The film was described by Guardian's film critic, Peter Bradshaw, as “a gobsmackingly awful British film - awful in the way that somehow only British films can be…”To talk about Irina Palm, we were joined by author & former associate professor of film and culture at the University of the West of England, Estella Tincknell to see if she agrees with Peter's opinion. For the thematically linked supporting feature© we talk to Laura Watson from the English Collective of Prostitutes (ECP) to hear about their history, aims and campaigns.Watch a trailer for the film HEREIn this scene, Maggie succumbs to one of the dangers of the job, Penis Elbow.Estella's new book will be released later this year.Irina Palm had an award name after it - the Irina Palm D'OrAlthough Irina Palm received a thumping from the UK critics, it did actually win some foreign film award and was viewed more favourably, on the whole, by foreign critics.Follow the ECP on Facebook and Instagram. Episode 183: Remembering Marianne Faithfull, Jesse Colin Young And Roy Ayers, Jr. + More May 18, 2026 Replaying from March 2025. Welcome back to this hour that we call Tales Vinyl Tells.  It's your chance to hear some of the great album rock from the 60s and 70s mostly.  We've been doing these programs since late 2019 and have covered lots a ground.  You know and I know that we've just scratched the surface of recorded rock, so the new shows keep coming.  The reruns aren't bad either.  They can be heard on your favorite podcast app.  Just search for Tales Vinyl Tells. Today we're going to say thanks and farewell to Marianne Faithfull, Jesse Colin Young of the Youngbloods and vibraphonist Roy Ayers Jr. The music under me is Roy Ayres with Herbie Mann at the 1969 Harlem summer of soul extravaganza with a song cowritten by Isaac Hayes. Those three have entered the room next door, as Henry Diltz coined the phrase. You also get some of the blues with Boz Scaggs and Duane Allman, together. So these are the stories that songwriters and artists want to convey to you. These are the Tales Vinyl Tells. Thanks for listening today. My email is talesvinyltells@gmail.com. You can hear a Tales Vinyl Tells radio program when it streams live on RadioFreeNashville.org and here.  We do that at 5 PM central time Wednesdays. The program can also be played and downloaded anytime at podbean.com, Apple podcasts, Google podcasts, iHeart podcasts, Player FM podcasts, Listen Notes podcasts and many other podcast places. And of course you can count on hearing the Tales on studiomillswellness.com/tales-vinyl-tells anytime. Zucchero : Le piano désaccordé et la revanche du « Petit Sucre » de Sanremo

La Story Nostalgie

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 27, 2026 4:22

Don and Dude return to honor two titans lost in 2025, revisiting albums that capture the creative peaks and lasting influence of Brian Wilson with The Beach Boys and Ozzy Osbourne with Black Sabbath. The episode traces how The Beach Boys Today! and Paranoid reshaped pop and heavy music, revealing how these records still echo through everything from chamber pop to modern metal. The Beach Boys – The Beach Boys Today! (1965) Brian Wilson uses Today! as a turning point, steering the band from surf-and-cars singles into a more introspective, studio-crafted pop world that points directly toward Pet Sounds. Side A delivers bright, radio-ready hooks like "Do You Wanna Dance?" and "When I Grow Up (To Be a Man), "while Side B dives into confessional ballads such as "Please Let Me Wonder" and "She Knows Me Too Well," blending chamber pop arrangements with vulnerable, adult themes.Black Sabbath – Paranoid (1970) Paranoid crystallizes the sound and mood of heavy metal, fusing Tony Iommi's down-tuned riffs, Geezer Butler's ominous lyrics, Bill Ward's jazz-schooled drumming, and Ozzy Osbourne's haunted vocals into a tight, relentless 1970 statement. From the anti-war sprawl of "War Pigs" and the sci-fi tragedy of "Iron Man" to the accidental hit "Paranoid" and the psychedelic "Fairies Wear Boots," the record turns fear, addiction, and apocalypse into riff-driven anthems that defined the genre.Dude is Diggin':The Macks – Bonanza (2025): A volatile, modern rock blast from a Portland band that smashes garage energy, psychedelic noise, and restless experimentation into a noisy, cathartic portrait of contemporary anxiety.Metallica – Reload (1997): A late-'90s reinvention that leans into groove and atmosphere, where hard rock bruisers like Fuel sit alongside moodier cuts like "The Memory Remains," featuring Marianne Faithfull's ghostly guest vocal.Don is Diggin':Just Desserts – Curtains (2025): A reflective, lo-fi-to-full-band set from Larry Fessenden and Tom Laverack that wrestles with post-COVID grief, aging, and small flashes of grace nearly four decades after their debut. The Cure – The Show of a Lost World (2025): A concert film capturing The Cure unveiling Songs of a Lost World in full at London's Troxy, framing the new material in a single, immersive performance.Follow the show on Instagram, Facebook, Threads, and Bluesky @albumnerds, and support by subscribing, rating, reviewing, and sharing. “What we have once enjoyed deeply we can never lose. They say “you can never go home again.” But maybe, what they meant was that you just simply shouldn't. Original Not Ready for Prime Time Player and first breakout star of SNL, Chevy Chase returns for his second time hosting and it does not take long for things to go off the rails. An obviously impaired Chevy is covered in flop sweat, has trouble reading his lines, and at times struggles with the English language. Not to be outdone, musical guest Marianne Faithfull arrives at Saturday Night Live equally impaired – if not more. She struggles through two performers off her comeback album, Broken English, and at times seems to be someplace else.  These two combine for one of the greatest – and most infamous – trainwrecks in show history. And what would a trainwreck be without The SNL in Review's legendary Andy Hoglund on hand to help sort through it all? Andy joins us to defend the musical guest, give his sympathies to Harry Shearer, and debate the pros and cons of drug use.Make sure to listen all the way through to the end to hear a snippet of one of the tracks off Chevy's debut album. "So much of what I was trying to address was so buried deep within me. It was like scratching an impossible itch, and then, finally, I got to Hoffman, and I was like, Oh my gosh, I can reach the spot. Wow." - Emma Swift Singer-songwriter Emma Swift sits down with Sadie to talk about her time at the Hoffman Process, a time she says was "utterly magical." Emma's story incorporates many lands. Her homeland is Australia. Her new home is Nashville, Tennessee. The rolling hills of Northern California and White Sulphur Springs are where Emma did her Process. And, then, the land within Emma - a deep interior she would need to excavate to heal. Living among highly creative musicians, and as a singer-songwriter, Emma's career counts on her creativity and ability to feel deeply. Before Hoffman, she felt repressed. She would go to write songs, sitting with her guitar, singing them, and feel very uncomfortable. She felt sad and longed to do what she saw other songwriters doing. Emma now realizes that what she saw in others provoked a deep longing in herself. Emma enrolled in the Process to break through her writer's block. But once there, she realized she had come for a deeper issue - her relationship with her father. He had passed away, and Emma had been carrying a feeling inside that something was not right and couldn't be set right. It was an "unresolved tension" that she feared was "never going to go away." Through the power of the Process and Emma's deep work, she was finally able to have a healing conversation with her father. When we're willing to travel to unexplored lands, beautiful and even unexpected, healing can occur. We hope you enjoy this conversation with Emma and Sadie. More about Emma Swift: Emma Swift is an Australian-born singer-songwriter. She lives in Nashville, TN. Emma describes her music as indie-folk, with her biggest influences being Marianne Faithfull and Sandy Denny. Her new album, “The Resurrection Game,” was released in September this year. It explores themes of love, loss, and transcendence.  Listen on Apple Podcasts As mentioned in this episode: The Resurrection Game: Album and Song Calistoga, California Indie Folk Genre •   Bob Dylan •   Joan Baez Nashville, Tennessee Sydney, Australia Eucalyptus trees

Send us a textIt's 1976. A woman named Reno in leather motorcycle gear descends upon the Bonneville Salt Flats on a state of the art Moto Valera motorcycle. Is speed her goal?  Is it the land art created by her tracks across the flats?  Is her rolling crash meant to serve as a metaphor for the next two year of her life? In this episode your intrepid hosts return to an era and setting that at least one of them never particularly wanted to visit: the art scene of New York in the 1970s. Join us for this rousing discussion of Rachel Kushner's 2013 novel The Flamethowers, which juxtaposes the avant garde art scene of the late seventies with motorcycle speed races, land art, and the Italian Red Brigade Movement of 1977.  When is it the message and when is it the medium? Where are the dividing lines between style and substance? Is it revolution or posture?  The Flamethrowers was a National Book Award Finalist; Kushner is a 2013 Guggenheim Fellow.   The Great American Novel podcast is an ongoing discussion about the novels we hold up as significant achievements in our American literary culture.  Additionally, we sometimes suggest novels who should break into the sometimes problematical canon and at other times we'll suggest books which can be dropped from such lofty consideration.  Your hosts are Kirk Curnutt and Scott Yarbrough, professors with little time and less sense who nonetheless enjoy a good book banter.  All opinions are their own and do not reflect the points of view of their employers, publishers, relatives, pets, or accountants. Audio from the trailer for Girl on a Motorcycle, 1968, dir. Hello Friends, This time on Mixology, we're back with another Mixology Conversation, this time with the delightful Andrew Batt, discussing the fantastic new Cast Your Fate to the Wind: The Complete UK Decca Recordings from Marianne Faithfull. Andrew's care and attention with Marianne's work made this one of my most anticipated reissue campaigns in many years, and with the fantastic results now available, I have to say it comes with my highest recommendation. However, I was initially left with many questions about the mixes chosen across the set, as while stereo is the defacto choice here, the occasional mono mix surfaces where stereo does in fact exist, and beyond that... why stereo over mono? Your ears will tell you part of the answer, but these make up but a small part of our conversation, which became a delightfully flowing overview of Marianne's 60s career, her evolution from pure folk singer to baroque pop master, and the hurdles and misconceptions that have caused this material to both be overlooked and undervalued both at the time and in the decades since. Andrew - who was amusingly the fourth guest I have had by this name - was an absolute delight to converse with, and our conversation really opened my eyes to the struggles Marianne faced over the years, both externally and internally, when it came to this material, and I am so glad it is finally being given the presentation it deserves to get the appraisal it deserves. For listeners on the Patreon, a 10 minute bonus clip from this conversation is also available, discussing the lack of session reels, Mick Jagger's treasures, the mystery of a vinyl box set, and an exploration of the challenges at large with a curated reissue campaign in 2025. In other words - an utterly essential addition that sadly did not fit into the episode proper! Cast Your Fate to the Wind: The Complete UK Decca Recordings 1964-1969 is out now as a CD box set and a series of LP reissues on Proper Music. Dougie Bowne is a producer, drummer, guitarist, and composer who entered New York's avant-garde scene in his early twenties after a chance street encounter with a member of John Cale's circle, who invited him to jam simply because he was carrying a bag of drum sticks and “looked cool”. Unfamiliar with Cale at the time, Dougie nonetheless accepted—and that serendipitous moment launched him into the heart of the Downtown scene. Since then, he has collaborated with an eclectic roster of artists, including John Cale, Iggy Pop, Yoko Ono, Laurie Anderson, The Lounge Lizards, Marianne Faithfull, as well as filmmakers Edet Belzberg and Jim Jarmusch.

Another Side of Guitarist Marc Ribot: Intimate Songs With His Voice

Guitarist Marc Ribot has established himself as one of the most versatile , distinctive, in-demand guitarists anywhere. He's played with Tom Waits, Marianne Faithfull, Elvis Costello, and dozens, maybe hundreds of others, and led his own bands that have touched on jazz, Cuban music, no wave, and more. But now, with his new album, "Map of a Blue City", we get another side of Marc Ribot: he sings. The album incorporates recordings made over nearly half of Ribot's life. Some of the songs were decades in the making, going from demos and home recordings in the 1990s to at one point in 2014 recording with his friend, the legendary producer Hal Willner, who died in 2020. Ribot had shelved the project several times, but the songs just wouldn't leave him alone. Finally working with producer and guitarist Ben Greenberg, they found was a way to reconcile the intimate recordings and previous choices – adding overdubs and taking things away. Ultimately, Ribot says “There are some hard truths and cold observations in these songs. I wanted the room to be small enough so that we couldn't turn away: but warm enough to feel like you're hearing it from a friend.” Ribot plays some of these tunes in-studio.  Set list: 1. Elizabeth 2. Death of a Narcissist 3. Bella Ciao

He lives across the street and happens to be one of my fave musicians ever. Sometimes life is just like that right? He's played in so many rolls over the years both as a solo artist and film composer and as a player backing the heaviest like Laurie Anderson, Lou Reed, Marianne Faithfull, John Zorn and this bloke Jamie Lidell Yep, he's opened me up to so much great music and is one of the best improvisers I've ever heard. Just flowing with the music. He sits at the piano and he's away. With the muses that circle him. Great to present this audiobook length chronology for the archives. Rob has been such an important part of my musical world here in America. He's all over my upcoming album "Places of Unknowing" and throughout this chat I play excepts from the record that were played by the man himself. here we go!!!

The Record Store Day Podcast with Paul Myers

For decades, the innovative guitarist Marc Ribot has been a first-call session musician, lending his singular instrumental voice to recordings by Tom Waits, Marianne Faithfull, Elvis Costello, T-Bone Burnett and many more. On his brand new album, Map Of A Blue City (New West Records), Ribot adds his actual voice to the music for his first ever vocal album, one that took roughly 30 years to finally see the light of day. In our conversation, he talks about working with the late, great Hal Willner (who worked on the early stages of ...Blue City), the poetry of Allen Ginsberg, and why Tom Waits is such a uniquely effective bandleader.  The Record Store Day Podcast is a weekly music chat show written, produced, engineered and hosted by Paul Myers, who also composed the theme music and selected interstitial music.  Executive Producers (for Record Store Day) Michael Kurtz and Carrie Colliton. Discovered at a Rolling Stones party at the age of 17, Marianne Faithfull broke out in the early '60s with the Jagger/Richards song "As Tears Go By." Faithfull's liaison with Mick Jagger kept her in the public eye. In the '70s, she struggled with addiction, but she made a triumphant comeback in her 30s, and became a critically acclaimed rock cabaret singer. Also, critic-at-large John Powers reviews the Brazilian film I'm Still Here, which he describes as a "moving, inspiring, beautifully made story about learning to confront tyranny."Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

Brian and Jason kick things off with a look at why Gen Z grads are getting fired just months after landing jobs and a curiously viral declassified CIA sabotage guide. Speaking of sabotage, U.S. students are struggling with their lowest reading scores in decades, raising questions about the future workforce. Meanwhile, Google Maps' controversial renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to “Gulf of America” for U.S. users has sparked some amusing geopolitical tit-for-tats. In the AI wars, OpenAI is fuming over claims that DeepSeek trained its models using OpenAI's own stolen data—ironic, given OpenAI's history of scraping the internet. As if that weren't enough, California's Attorney General warns AI companies that nearly everything they're doing might be illegal, while the Copyright Office suggests AI copyright issues were settled way back in 1965. Oh, and OpenAI is now in the nuclear weapons game. What could possibly go wrong? In tech and business news, CVS is making customers jump through app hoops to unlock cabinets, Uber claims it's the victim of an elaborate fake crash scheme, and Tesla promises a robotaxi business and humanoid robots in 2025—though Musk admits current Teslas will need new hardware to achieve full self-driving. Whole Foods workers have formed their first union since Amazon took over, and MoviePass is considering a pivot to crypto, because of course it is. Meanwhile, Elon Musk's ventures keep making headlines, and Waymo's driverless taxis are facing vandalism in Southern California. Law enforcement in California is also in hot water, having misused state databases over 7,000 times last year. For media lovers, Star Trek: Section 31 is on the horizon, while The Expanse‘s first three seasons are vanishing from Amazon soon. Behind the Music is back, and Ladies & Gentlemen… 50 Years of SNL Music offers a deep dive into the show's musical legacy. On the gaming front, classic titles like Spaceship Warlock and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy are getting attention alongside newly accessible archives of 1,500 classic gaming magazines. The Night Agent Season 2 is here and it sucks, and Amazon is hiking the price of its Music Unlimited subscriptions. Finally, the episode wraps with a nod to Marianne Faithfull's passing and China's new “magic beans” shaking up American markets—because, in this chaotic world, even the beans are making headlines because AI wrote this terrible summary.Sponsors:Factor - Get started at FactorMeals.com/grumpy50off and use code grumpy50off to get 50% off your first box plus free shipping. Nearly 30 years ago in the alt-comedy scene of New York City, Marc crossed paths with an evangelical country singer named Tammy Faye Starlite. She's the alter ego of lifelong New Yorker Tammy Lang, who stormed the city's cabarets and clubs with her own form of performance art and musicality. Tammy and Marc reminisce about the days at places like Luna Lounge, the creation of the Tammy Faye Starlight character, and why she started performing as real singers, like Marianne Faithfull and Nico.
