What happens when we stop designing care around institutions and start designing it around people? In this week's episode, AgingIN CEO Susan Ryan sits down with internationally recognized dementia care innovator Eloy van Hal, to answer this question. Drawing on decades of experience in the Netherlands, Eloy tells Susan how he helped move residents from traditional high-rise nursing homes into small, neighborhood-style homes where daily life feels familiar, meaningful, and human. As founder of the groundbreaking Hogeweyk model of dementia village in the Netherlands, van Hal discusses the philosophy behind it and the broader movement toward relationship-based, person-directed dementia care. Their conversation explores the importance of trust, family education, staff development, and stakeholder collaboration in creating cultures of care that honor the person beyond the diagnosis.

Herlinda’s cousins Lloyd and Lee Palmer are visiting from Oregon and they are in the Brew Ha Ha converted train coach studio with Herlinda and Daedalus today. Lloyd Palmer is a train expert and today he will tell us all about the retired train cars that make up the Wine Country Radio studios and offices here in Santa Rosa. Herlinda has brought her family to the show before. Her father Eloy Heras, a Navy veteran who served in Vietnam, was on this episode back in April of 2018. That day, he told some stories that involved both the Navy and beer. Also, Eloy and Herlinda’s brother Anthony came on Brew Ha Ha on this episode, last year on June 19, 2025. Lloyd is also a retired Navy veteran like Herlinda’s father Eloy. “Trains and beer? I can talk all day!” said cousin Lloyd upon Herlinda’s invitation. They have a caboose in their own backyard, with beer. Lee says they have brewskis in the caboosky. Lloyd has a collection of almost 2500 craft beer tap handles. They are all on display in his garage. He started the collection about 30 years ago. He collects tap handles from Oregon microbreweries and IPAs nationwide. Trains are the only vehicle you can drink a beer on and not really worry about it. –Daedalus Howell, Words of Wisdom The Wine Country Radio studios may be the only train car radio studios that Lloyd has ever heard of. There are several types of cars. There is a boxcar and a baggage car. The KRSH studios and Exitos, sister stations, are in the boxcar. He thinks the Wine Country Radio studio was a passenger coach, not a caboose, given its fine original woodwork, high vaulted cieling and windows. Rails from 1925, Cars from 1910-1915 There is still some rail and some historical railroad ties in the ground under the cars. Lloyd found the mill mark on a rail from 1925 from a steel mill in Tennessee. He suggests that these tracks were a spur at a station, used for maintenance, before becoming a train parking lot. A spur means it is not parallel to the main track. Lee has turned her caboose into a painting studio. She wanted to restore it rather than convert it. The caboose is from 1981 and was in use until about 2006. The interior colors are the same except they put a little bar in it. There was a strict rule on the railroad called Rule G which prohibited workers from consuming alcohol before or during work shifts. Now they have a red bar across the Rule G sign. In an ironic twist, Brew Ha Ha is recorded in Studio G. Lloyd estimates the Studio G coach was built from about 1910-1915 since it is made of wood, rather than steel. Its full length extends past the hallway that crosses it. As for the boxcar, that is a standard 40-foot boxcar. They were in use from the 1940s to 1960s, for what they called single car freight, or single loads. Most interstate trains today are what they call Unit Trains like oil tankers or double-stacked container trains. Those carry standard freight containers so boxcars are much less in use today. If you ship a lot of freight, rail takes a lot of freight off the roads. Each rail car takes 3 trucks off the road. So a 100-car train takes 300 trucks off the roads. There is a great train station in Los Angeles, Union Station. It is in fine shape despite its age. The Amtrak Pacific Surfliner runs from San Luis Obispo to San Diego with convenient station stops all along the way.

Guests: Blue Jays outfielder Myles Straw, shortstop Andres Gimenez, infielder Leo Jimenez, outfielder Eloy Jimenez Deep Left Field returns to Dunedin, Florida for Blue Jays spring training and this week we present a confluence of *imenezes, each of whom has been making news in the early days of camp, but first, a chat with Myles Straw about the Jays repatriation of Max Scherzer, who agreed to a one-year deal early Thursday morning. Andres Gimenez will be the Jays' starting shortstop this season. It's a move back to his original position, and one he played very well in the absence of Bo Bichette down the stretch and into the playoffs. Gimenez talks to us about shifting back to the other side of second base and what he needs to do to improve his offence. Leo Jimenez is out of options, and in a make-or-break position to break camp as the back-up infielder or be put through waivers after a lost 2025 because of illness and injury. We catch up with the youngster, who was solid for the Jays in 2024, to talk about how he's dealing with the pressure. And we play "meet the new guy" with Eloy Jimenez, a one-time top prospect who exploded onto the big-league scene with 47 home runs over his first 173 career games before running into the injury bug - hard - for five years. Here on a minor-league contract, he's off to a sensational start to the spring. All this plus the mailbag at deepleftfield@thestar.ca!

Step into Episode 195 of On The Delo as Delo sits down with Chris Nelson, founder of Nelson's Meat + Fish, for an intimate conversation about the ocean, sobriety, and what it really takes to build a specialty food market that refuses to cut corners. From growing up on the Connecticut coast and falling in love with the water to navigating decades in hospitality while battling addiction, Chris opens up about the mentors, mistakes, and moments that shaped both his recovery and his business philosophy. If you're in hospitality, love high-quality food, or are building something that requires patience and integrity, this episode delivers real-world wisdom you can use right now.Hear how Chris went from pot scrubber at a Virginia bed-and-breakfast to opening two Arizona locations that source day-boat scallops from Nantucket, Faroe Island salmon, and Family Roots Wagyu from Eloy—all while working with a team that's been with him for years and treating every guest interaction like family. He breaks down why Nelson's isn't a restaurant, how to shop like you're at a farmer's market, the importance of air-chilling seafood at home, and why Americans need to start eating more underrated fish like bluefish, pollock, and mackerel. The conversation also dives into Chris's 13 years of sobriety, meeting his wife Danielle at the one-year mark, and how the discipline of recovery translates directly into the discipline of running a business built on relationships, not transactions. You'll also get the story behind the Nelly Slaw, how Nelson's landed exclusive Pocomo Meadow oysters from Nantucket, and why Chris never wants to own a restaurant again. From mentorship and music (Metallica, Depeche Mode, and punk rock) to the spiritual connection he feels with the ocean, Chris's journey is a testament to how passion, presence, and purpose can turn a love of food into a thriving community hub. Whether you're a chef, home cook, entrepreneur, or someone navigating your own recovery, this episode is packed with honest, relatable insight that goes far beyond fish and meat.Chapter Guide: Timestamps0:00 – 2:08 – Episode 195 Intro, Built Different Community, and Meeting Chris Nelson2:09 – 5:04 – The Power of Relationship, Connection, and Real Service in Business5:05 – 11:49 – Meet the Team: Phoenix and Scottsdale Staff Who Make Nelson's Special11:50 – 16:16 – Nelly Slaw Origin Story, Mentorship from Ann Cashin, and Austin Grill Days16:17 – 20:55 – Chris's Origin Story: Connecticut Coast, Miami, Northern Virginia, and First Taste of Hospitality20:56 – 23:27 – University of Florida, Finding His Tribe, and the Importance of Friendship23:28 – 30:02 – Meeting Danielle: A Chance Dinner in Arizona and 13 Years Together30:03 – 34:44 – Sobriety Journey: Owning It, Feeling Everything, and the Blessing of Recovery34:45 – 39:09 – The Nelson's Customer Experience: Shop Like a Farmer's Market, Not a Grocery Store39:10 – 46:45 – Chasing Seasonality: Nantucket Scallops, Hawaiian Auction, and Day-Boat Quality46:46 – 50:15 – Family Roots Farms Wagyu, Bagelfeld's Bagels, and Working with Local Diamonds50:16 – 53:05 – Food Memories, Claudio's Olive Oil Lesson, and Eating Simple, Good Things53:06 – 55:17 – Fresh Forecast Email, No Pre-Orders, and How to Stay Connected with Nelson's55:18 – 58:50 – Rapid Fire: Salmon vs. Tuna, Metallica, Depeche Mode, East Coast vs. Desert Sunsets58:51 – 1:00:10 – Most Underrated Fish (Bluefish!), Closing Gratitude, and Supporting LocalIf this conversation about the ocean, recovery, and building a business with integrity resonated with you, hit Subscribe for more deep dives on hospitality, food, and real-life resilience.

A mother of two on a vastly different trajectory, Mandy takes the time to sit and reminisce with me about trips to Eloy, landing on glaciers, guns and death threats in Mexico and dollar bills at the strip club cause she met me while I was sans pants in a thong looking for a "champagne room" customer, she's most certainly got a few stories to tell! Wait, this one might not have been the best idea! Please join me on this episode of Lunatic Fringe with one of my dearest friends (who knows way too fucking much about me), Mandy Curry.

In 1964, Stanislavo, a zealous young man devoted to his ideals, turns his back on his privilege to join the leftist movement in the jungles of Venezuela. There, as he trains, he meets Emiliana, a nurse and fellow revolutionary. Though their intense connection seems to be love at first sight, their romance is upended by a decision with consequences that will echo down through the generations.Almost forty years later, in a poor barrio of Caracas, María, a single mother, ekes out a precarious existence as a housekeeper, pouring her love into Eloy, her young son. Her devotion will not be enough, however, to keep them from disaster. On the eve of the attempted coup against President Chávez, Eloy is wounded by a stray bullet, fracturing her world. Amid the chaos at the hospital, María encounters Stanislavo, now a newspaper editor. Even as the country itself is convulsed by waves of unrest, this twist of fate forces a belated reckoning for Stanislavo, who may yet earn a chance to atone for old missteps before it's too late. With its epic scope, gripping narrative, and unflinching intimacy, Freedom Is a Feast announces a major new talent. Alejandro Puyana has delivered a wise and moving debut about sticking to one's beliefs at the expense of pain and chaos, about the way others can suffer for our misdeeds even when we have the best of intentions, and about the possibility for redemption when love persists across time. Alejandro Puyana moved to the United States from Venezuela at the age of twenty-six. In 2022, he completed his MFA at the Michener Center for Writers at the University of Texas. His work has appeared in Tin House, American Short Fiction, The American Scholar, New England Review, Idaho Review, among others, and his story “The Hands of Dirty Children” was selected by Curtis Sittenfeld for Best American Short Stories 2020. He lives with his wife and daughter in Austin, Texas. Recommended Books: John Hickey, Big Chief Ibrahim Nasrallah, Time of White Horses Julio Cortázar, Literature Class Chris Holmes is Chair of Literatures in English and Professor at Ithaca College. He writes criticism on contemporary global literatures. His book, Kazuo Ishiguro Against World Literature, is published with Bloomsbury Publishing. He is the co-director of The New Voices Festival, a celebration of work in poetry, prose, and playwriting by up-and-coming young writers. Learn more about your ad choices. In my recent trip to Mexico I learned about the aluxes, small elves that, according to Mayan folklore, protect the nature of the Yucatán Peninsula. Today's story is about one of the aluxes and the mischief that they stir up when their environment is disturbed without their permission. This story is in the third person and present tense. Important vocabulary in the story includes: “alux” (mayan word for a spiritual little person that causes chaos or brings luck, depending on how you treat it), “cenote” (“water-filled sinkhole, sometimes covered, sometimes open, often very deep and fed by underground rivers”), “dejar” (to leave),“divertirse” (to have fun), “se ríe” (laughs), “travieso” (mischievous), “herramientas” (tools), and “caras” (faces). No matter where you are in your language journey, stories will help you on your way. You can find a transcript of the story and read along at https://smalltownspanishteacher.com/2025/06/23/simple-stories-in-spanish-eloy-el-alux/ ¡Muchas gracias por escuchar!
