255 - Robin Trower Hi Vintage Guitar people! welcome to “Have Guitar Will Travel”, presented by Vintage Guitar Magazine! With your host, me, James Patrick Regan. Today I'm speaking with Guitar Legend Robin Trower. In our conversation Robin speaks about the guitars and amps he was using early on, Gretsch and Gibson's and Selmer Amps and what brought about his switch to Fender Strats and Marshall amps. Robin talks about his early influences particularly Scotty Moore and B.B. King and he describes the early bands in his neighborhood particularly the Fabulous Rockefellers, who inspired him to play the guitar. Robin describes getting together with his friend Chris Copping and working out tunes together and he tells us about his band “the Paramounts”. Robin tells us about his time in Procol Harum and what led to the start of his band and the people that made up his band throughout the years and who he has now and he tells us about his new album “Robin Trower - Live! 50th Anniversary Edition Landmark 1975 Stockholm show” Robin talks about seeing Jimi Hendrix early on when Procol Harum shared the bill in early 1968. Robin discusses his use of pedals in the ‘70's and the Fulltone pedals he uses now. Robin tells us about his Fender signature model which is his preferred guitar to play these days and he talks about his guitar collection which was stolen which led to not having a collection now. Finally Robin tells us about touring and playing music at 81 and how that keeps his spirit young and his love of soccer and reading nautical novels.

On this episode of Big Blend Radio, we're joined by Chris P. James, front man of the legendary The Burrito Brothers, to dive into the band's bold new album, The Magic Time Machine of Love. Rather than leaning on nostalgia, the Burritos are bending time—fusing recordings spanning 1983–2024 into a genre-blurring journey where jazz motifs inspired by Charles Mingus collide with cosmic country, prog-psych textures, and honky-tonk grit polished for the future. Chris P. James shares insights into the creative process behind the 12-track release, including: - The album's “time machine” concept - Innovative recording approaches inspired by The Beatles - Reimagining classics from artists like Procol Harum and Quicksilver Messenger Service - Honoring the legacy of country-rock pioneer Gram Parsons - Blending vintage Burritos spirit with modern sonic innovation The album also features remarkable moments, including archival contributions from original Flying Burrito members Jon Corneal and Ian Dunlop, a fiery guest turn from former Burrito Brothers guitarist Bob Hatter, and even two tracks featuring Gram Parsons' vocals brought forward through groundbreaking AI technology. Formed in Los Angeles in 1968 as the The Flying Burrito Brothers, the Burritos helped pioneer country-rock with landmark albums like The Gilded Palace of Sin. Today's Nashville-based lineup—Chris P. James, Steve Allen, Tony Paoletta, and Peter Young—continues that legacy while fearlessly pushing forward. Learn more: https://www.theburritobrothers.net/

Time to get personal. Well, a little personal anyway. Today on WKXL's NH Unscripted we take a trip in the wayback machine to my high school years and a couple of songs that had an impact on me. I especially focus on two musical groups: Procol Harum and Marmalade. The 60's and 70's were both great times and brutal times socially. The Vietnam war, forced school integration, the Kent State shootings, Woodstock, etc. combined to produce a snapshot of life never to be reproduced. Enjoy.

On this episode, we fix our gaze on guitarist Robin Trower. Though he's not a household name today, he continues to be held in high regard by guitar aficionados. His time with Procol Harum and the formation of his own power trio laid the foundation for a sound that would captivate audiences and inspire countless guitarists. From Trower's use of the middle pickup on his Fender Stratocaster to the swirling effects of the Univibe pedal, we explore the sonic artistry behind “Day of the Eagle“, and the power of music across decades… from the days when guitars ruled the airwaves and heroes were measured by bend of a string. “Day Of The Eagle” – Robin Trower Copyright 1974 Chrysalis Music Ltd Learn more about your ad choices. What is needed, and how do you get it?I prefer the words of Procol Harum: "For the answer lies in learning, and in teaching we are taught. There's nothing hidden anywhere, it's all there to be sought."

Renowned ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro and legendary drummer Mick Fleetwood have teamed up to release a new rendition of the classic "Whiter Shade Of Pale." The single, a reimagining of Procol Harum's iconic song, is the second taste of their highly anticipated collaborative album, set to drop on October 18th via 40 Below Records."Whiter Shade Of Pale" has long been regarded as a timeless classic, and now, in the hands of these two iconic musicians, it takes on a new life. The collaboration marries Jake Shimabukuro's masterful ukulele playing with Mick Fleetwood's dynamic drumming, creating a soundscape that is both haunting and uplifting. Mick Fleetwood shares his excitement about the project: "This is a song I've always wanted to play… of course, the song recorded by Procol Harum was a world-renowned classic… with a melody so strong that it became a gift to us! And Jake totally commands the full need for dynamics and a passionate delivery. At last, I got to play and record this song!!!" Jake Shimabukuro reflects on the collaboration: "This was a song that Mick suggested. Such an iconic piece of music. It truly plays like an anthem. And Mickʻs drumming makes the track feel amazing. I was just transported through his drum sounds." The upcoming album, Blues Experience, promises to be a powerful fusion of their distinct musical styles, blending Jake's innovative approach to the ukulele with Mick's legendary rhythm. Fans can look forward to an album that pushes boundaries while honoring the timeless quality of the music they both cherish. Joining Shimabukuro and Fleetwood on the album are bassist Jackson Waldhoff and keyboard player Michael Grande. Special guest Mark Johnstone from The Mick Fleetwood Blues Band also lends his keyboard prowess to "Need Your Love So Bad" and "Rockin' In The Free World." Over two intense three-day sessions, the band recorded nine tracks live in the studio, with Sonny Landreth contributing slide guitar to the Jeff Beck/Stevie Wonder classic "Cause We've Ended As Lovers." Blues Experience promises to be a landmark release. It combines the formidable talents of Jake Shimabukuro and Mick Fleetwood with fresh, innovative interpretations of blues classics.
