This week Mark and I enjoyed thinking about what Billy Sherwood has contributed on bass to the last two Yes albums, The Quest and Mirror to the Sky. We each chose three examples of songs from those two records to talk about and shared our thoughts on whether Billy has continued the tradition of Chris Squire bass playing or gone his own way - or a combination of the two. Is Billy channelling Chris? What do we want from a 'new' bass player? How does Billy's multi-instrumentalist pedigree affect his bass playing with Yes? Billy Sherwood © William Mulryne There wasn't enough time to review the posts on the YMP Facebook discussion group this week but hopefully I'll be able to get back to that next week. Also, apologies to those who sent in entries to last week's quiz. I haven't forgotten and I'll be announcing the winner next week. Ronnie Ciago joined us for an interview! Drummer, drum instructor, clinician, author, vocalist, songwriter, and producer, he's worked with a LOT of people! In the Yes sphere, he has performed with Patrick Moraz at the Baked Potato and the Musicians Institute in 1996, on a cover of "Los Endos" from 1998's The Fox Lies Down on Broadway - A Tribute to Genesis, and the track "One Day in June" which ended up on Moraz's solo album Change of Space. And in 2011, he was part of a lineup of Circa: that also included Johnny Bruhns, Tony Kaye, and Billy Sherwood. Beyond all that, he has also worked with the likes of Jeff Berlin, Robert Downey Jr., Mick Taylor, Bill Ward, and more! During the interview, there were internet issues, but we were able to get him back on as the broadcast progressed.

It is with heavy hearts that we deliver this week's episode honoring the passing of a guitar hero giant who also happened to be an awesome singer and songwriter: John Sykes. He was a guitarist deserving of the title guitar god who rarely got mentioned in the same circles as the Satches, Vais, Rhodes, and Van Halens. Most known for his brief stint in Thin Lizzy at the end of their career and as a brief member of Whitesnake. He should have been a household for playing on the Whitesnake 87 album that sold 25M records worldwide, but he was fired before it came out. Kevin's a huge fan of Blue Murder, so we will focus on that band and some of the lesser-known projects he was involved in while also paying homage to his mainstream successes. New to InObscuria? Typically, what we do is exhume obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. Rest In Peace John. Your pure musicality and amazing songs will live forever in our hearts!Songs this week include:Blue Murder – “We All Fall Down” from Nothin' But Trouble (1993)Streetfighter – “She's No Angel” from Lightnin' To The Nations: NWOBHM 25th Anniversary Collection (2005)Tygers Of Pan Tang – “Blackjack” from Spellbound (1981)John Sykes – “Pride And Joy” from Crossfire: A Salute To Stevie Ray (1996)Derek Sherinian – “God Of War” from Mythology (2004)Thin Lizzy – “Cowboy Song” from One Night Only (2000)John Sykes – “Cautionary Warning” from 20th Century (1997)Blue Murder – “Still Of The Night” from Screaming Blue Murder: Dedicated To Phil Lynott (1994)Blue Murder – “Jelly Roll” from Screaming Blue Murder: Dedicated To Phil Lynott (1994)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://twitter.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uIf you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/Check out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/

What did the Talk songs sound like live? – 628

Produced by Joseph Cottrell, Jeffrey Crecelius and Ken Fuller This week, Mark and I take our cue from the recent announcement of the Talk deluxe box set to be released at the end of this month. It contains a live recording of a 1994 concert in Canandaigua, New York (interestingly seemingly misspelt on the adverts) that includes 5 songs from the recently released album. So we were wondering how the latest songs sounded in 1994 in a live setting. The best bootleg available up to now has been the TV broadcast from Santiago in Chile during the fairly short South American Tour of 1994. Mark owns a DVD of the show but it's available to everyone, including me, on YouTube and the version I have included below is the whole of the broadcast version including interviews with the band and behind the scenes footage. It's well worth a watch in full. Mark and I focussed on just the Talk songs for this discussion, however, and there's plenty to enjoy, as you might imagine. This lineup of the band included Billy Sherwood in his first stint and benefits from his singing, guitar playing, keyboards, bass and assorted percussion. He is, as I'm sure you know, a man of many parts. See if you agree with our assessment of the Talk songs from this performance. Was it possible to replicate all the studio trickery live? Are the band in synch? How did the audience react? Let us know if you agree with us! After two years there, he moved to Los Angeles station KLOS. The rehearsal took place at Mickey's Black Box in Lititz, Pennsylvania. Ken F enjoyed the drive out to Amish country and scored himself some first row seats in front of Billy Sherwood. In his usual style and detail, Ken F provides the Palaver with insight and memories of a full-on show, complete with a (very minor) Steve incident. Produced by Joseph Cottrell, Ken Fuller, Wayne Hall and Jeffrey Crecelius In a change to the advertised episode, Mark and I thought it was essential to give our thoughts on the new Yes single Cut From The Stars so most of this episode is devoted to the best new Yes music for many years. How does this new Yes music compare to The Quest? Does it sound progressive? Does it increase the anticipation for the new album? https://youtu.be/5WSqjH6mFhk YES announce new studio album ‘Mirror To The Sky' for release 19th May 2023; launch first single ‘Cut From The Stars' YES, who are Steve Howe, Geoff Downes, Jon Davison, Billy Sherwood & Jay Schellen, are pleased to announce their new studio album Mirror To The Sky on InsideOutMusic/Sony Music on the 19th May 2023. “This is a very important album for the band,” says Steve Howe, Yes' longest serving member, master guitarist, and producer of Mirror To The Sky. “We kept the continuity in the approach we established on The Quest, but we haven't repeated ourselves. That was the main thing. As Yes did in the seventies from one album to another, we're growing and moving forward. In later years, Yes often got going but then didn't do the next thing. This album is demonstrative of us growing, and building again.” For Yes, that “next thing” is a collection of high energy, intricate, lush and layered new studio songs for an album which adds to the band's much heralded legacy, while charting a path to exciting future times ahead. Today also sees the launch of the first track taken from the album. Magic Potion 04:08 As they were wrapping up The Quest, Yes found themselves with song sketches, structures, and ideas that were demanding attention. Yes received unconditional support from InsideOut boss Thomas Waber, who encouraged them to keep going in the studio, months before The Quest would even go on sale. It was like throwing gasoline on their creative fire. “When we delivered everything, and they were just getting the vinyl and everything into production for manufacturing, we were still very much in that creative zone,” explains Steve Howe. “That belief that Thomas had in us really meant a lot,” he says. “We truly get along as people,” says Jon Davison. “I feel like everyone's focused inward to the greater circle, concentric to the core of highest standards that define Yes. It's a wonderful thing to witness and of which to play a part. I believe this reflects vibrantly in the music and the creative input that each one is willing to apply, not for the benefit of the individual, but for the greater whole that is Yes.” “There was a lot of material floating around because the band hadn't done anything in the studio for so long. Ideas were just copious,” says bassist Billy Sherwood. “The pace of it was fast. As soon as we were finished with The Quest, and the mix had come out, we took a couple of little breaks there to catch our breath. But there was still music flowing around in the loop. It was just constantly being looked at and worked on. As we were all home and in that mode,

Produced by Joseph Cottrell, Ken Fuller, Wayne Hall and Jeffrey Crecelius While Kevin is on holiday with his family, Mark flies solo and brings us some of the most important talking points of the week including the news that Jay Schellen has been named as the permanent replacement in Yes for Alan White. Also, Mark mentions what's coming up for Yes fans in this year's Record Store Day and more! What are your thoughts on the appointment of Jay Schellen? What do you think he will bring to Yes' writing? What would you like Yes to release for Record Store Day? 15th February 2023: YES are delighted to announce that drummer Jay Schellen has joined the band as a permanent member. Following the sad passing of our iconic drummer, Alan White on 26th May 2022, Jay will fulfil Alan's wishes in becoming the new drummer with YES. Jay Schellen was Alan White's choice to stand in during the Topographic Drama tour, in 2016, and shared drumming duties with him from 2018 onwards. Jay had previously played alongside YES' keyboardist Geoff Downes and late bassist Chris Squire together with long working relationships with Alan and YES bass guitarist Billy Sherwood. This gave Jay a deep insight into the workings of the dynamic rhythm section that drives YES' music. Steve Howe says “We're all delighted to welcome Jay officially into the fold! He's been a great support throughout the last seven years, and we couldn't have found a better all round team player.” “I am thrilled to become the new drummer with YES,” says Jay. “I grew up playing along to YES records and I am proud to have worked so closely with my musical hero and great friend Alan White these past few years. I will strive to honour his memory as we drive towards the future with the band.”Jay Schellen TormatoBook.com YMP Patrons: Producers: Joseph Cottrell Ken Fuller Jeffrey Crecelius and Wayne Hall Patrons: Aaron SteelmanDave OwenMark James LangPaul TomeiJoost MaglevDavid HeydenPaul WilsonMartin KjellbergBob MartilottaLindMichael O'ConnorWilliam HayesBrian SullivanDavid PannellLobate ScarpMiguel FalcãoChris BandiniDavid WatkinsonNeal KaforeyRachel HadawayCraig EstenesDemMark 'Zarkol' BaggsPaul HailesDoug CurranRobert NasirFergus CubbageScott ColomboFred BarringerDavidGeoff BailieSimon BarrowGeoffrey MasonStephen LambeGuy R DeRomeSteve DillHenrik AntonssonSteve PerryHogne Bø PettersenSteve RodeDeclan LogueSteve ScottTodd DudleyJimJamie McQuinnSteven RoehrJohn ParryKeith HoisingtonAlan BeggTerence SadlerJohn HoldenBarry GorskyMichael HanderhanTim StannardJon PicklesJohn ThomsonJohn CowanTony HandleyRobertGary BettsJim Morrison Facebook has changed how pages work which means that I've had to establish a new place for us to post and discuss Yes-related happenings. Produced by Ken Fuller, Wayne Hall and Jeffrey Crecelius What a week it's been in the world of Yes. Thanks to friend of the YMP Roie Avin, I managed to speak to Steve Howe about his new album with his late son Virgil, Lunar Mist as well as the US tour which began yesterday with a preview concert. (Don't worry, I managed to slip in a question about Tormato as well.) YMP Producer Ken Fuller went along to the dress rehearsal and I've added his photos from the event to the show notes for this week. The gig took place at Mickey's Black Box, part of long-time Yes collaborator Michael Tait's empire also known as the Rock Lititz campus in Philadelphia. In fact Michael introduced the band and spoke about his connections with Yes. (Incidentally he is now retired.) Also this week Doug Curran was at the wonderful Alan White tribute concert in Seattle which featured Trevor Rabin, Billy Sherwood, Jon Davison, Geoff Downes, Jay Schellen and a host of other stars. A truly moving event to remember a truly remarkable person. Add to all this the announcement of concert dates for Jon Anderson and the Band Geeks in 2023 complete with a great video of the whole band in action together. Actually I think it's a composite video using some clever remote recording but whatever the case, it all sounds fantastic. Fingers crossed they are able to visit the UK. That certainly doesn't mean we don't have anything to talk about, of course. So this week Mark and I have been thinking about why Yes wanted the late and already desperately missed Alan White. We have discovered or perhaps rediscovered some aspects of Alan's early career which made him the perfect fit for Yes following the departure of Bill Bruford, very shortly before the beginning of the original Close To The Edge tour. YES marks the 50th anniversary of their legendary Close To The Edge album by performing it live in its entirety.  After waiting more than 2 and a half years, I arrived at Royal Albert Hall in London to soak in the atmosphere of progressive rock greatness.Just weeks before the start of the tour, drummer Alan White died suddenly which shook the band & its fans to the core.  YES has chosen to soldier on and dedicate the tour to Alan's memory with Jay Schellen filling in for him.  With iconic artist Roger Dean on hand to introduce the band and pay tribute to Alan, it really set the stage for a memorable night of great music. There really was a sense of community in the crowd that night, despite the railway strike which ultimately kept a few fans from attending and The Wolf enjoyed a special evening amongst the prog rock heroes.  He and Action Jackson walk through the setlist, the people we bumped into and the performance from June 21, 2022.

It is again with heavy hearts that we deliver this week's episode about yet another fallen drummer: the amazing Mr. Alan White. The YES drummer passed away on May 26, 2022, at the age of 72 after dealing with some more recent illnesses. Kevin has a very deep connection to YES and Alan as a lifelong fan and student of their music. While not an obscure band by any means (the Rock & Roll Hall-of-Famers have sold 13.5 million RIAA-certified albums in the US, as well as more than 30 million albums worldwide and in 1985, they won a Grammy award), Alan had a number of side projects and collaborations during his 50-year tenure with YES. Another tough loss for the classic and progressive rock community.New to InObscuria? Typically, what we do is exhume obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. In the case of this particular episode, we are leaning towards the LOST. We are paying tribute to another titan of rock drummers! Rest In Peace Alan. I was in a hotel room with just my laptop but this news was clearly too important to miss. Why has Relayer been shelved? Will we ever hear the full album live?Is it too soon to play Close To The Edge in its entirety again? Listen to the episode and let us know what you think! PRESS RELEASE: 50th Anniversary Celebration of Close to the Edge for UK The Album Series Tour in June 8th March 2022: Progressive pioneers YES have announced a change to their forthcoming The Album Series Tour 2022 as they will celebrate the 50th anniversary of their iconic album Close to the Edge. This tour, twice rescheduled due to the Covid pandemic was intended to showcase YES's 1974 classic Relayer album but will now feature Close to the Edge, performed in full, along with other classic tracks from YES's extensive catalogue.  An announcement regarding the European dates will be made shortly. The tour line-up features Steve Howe (guitars), Alan White (drums), Geoff Downes (keyboards), Jon Davison (vocals), Billy Sherwood (bass guitar and backing vocals) with additional drums and percussion by Jay Schellen. All tour dates are as previously announced and all tickets remain valid. A full performance of the Relayer album will now be featured in a future tour in The Album Series. The show will comprise full production and a high-definition video wall directed by Roger Dean who will also be joining the tour with an exhibition of YES related art. Following the release of The Yes Album and Fragile, in 1971, YES released what is widely considered one of the most defining albums, not only for YES but for the whole progressive movement. Close to the Edge became an inspiration for their contemporaries and for successive generations of musicians. “We reached a real high, doing ‘Close to the Edge',” said Steve Howe. “We valued the musicianship, the artistic ideas and the vocalising that people bring and that's why we're still doing it, because it's exciting to do! ‘Close to the Edge' was voted the most-proggy album possibly ever made. It was very experimental. We had already done 10-minute epics but with ‘Close to the Edge' we just took it a stage further and I'm very pleased we were brave enough to do that.” YES 2022 UK Tour Dates Are: June 2022 15th June       Wednesday   Glasgow        Royal Concert Hall 17th June       Friday             Manchester   Bridgewater Hall 18th June       Saturday        Nottingham   Royal Concert Hall 20th June       Monday          Liverpool        Philharmonic Hall 21st June        Tuesday         London           Royal Albert Hall 22nd June       Thursday       York                Barbican 24th June       Friday             Birmingham   Symphony Hall 26th June       Sunday          Newcastle      O2 City Hall 28th June       Tuesday         Dublin Eire    Vicar Street 29th June       Wednesday   Cork Eire       Opera House Tickets remain valid for the rescheduled shows.
