In this episode of Lipps Service — the second installment of our NYC music scene series — Scott sits down with four buzzing artists out of the East Coast — Des Rocs, Eamon Rush and Brian Duke of Pan Arcadia, and Connor Abeles of Cab Ellis. Starting off with the blistering rock ‘n' roller, Des Rocs discusses his upbringing and musical influences from Long Island, including odd jobs he's had to support his music career. Des also talks about his endorsement from UFC's Dana White, funny stories of his performances alongside The Cult and The Rolling Stones, and the influence ofIan Astbury and Queen's Live At Wembley album. Des concludes by exploring the making of his latest album, Dream Machine, and listing his top 5 East Coast artists, rock albums, and underrated frontmen and women. Next up, Brooklyn-bred rock band Pan Arcadia's frontman Eamon Rush and drummer Brian Duke get into their local performances at different venues in Manhattan and Brooklyn, living together at “The Shack” and their home studio, and NYC influences like Lou Reed and The Strokes. Eamon and Brian also talk about their various charity benefit concerts like “Save The Scene” and “Rock The Pantry,” the camaraderie of the local current scene, and insight into the band's upcoming music releases. The two close the interview by listing their top 5 new bands and places to eat and drink in Brooklyn, and everyone in the studio takes a ginger shot, made and brought by the band. Last but not least, Scott talks with eclectic frontman Connor Abeles of Cab Ellis, who dives into his musical beginnings in LA and Boston, comparing LA vs. NYC music, and the band's experience working with experimental producer Gordon Raphael. Connor also talks about the band's name origin and developing his eccentric live performance style by running, dancing, and singing at Randall's Island Park. He gets into winning NPR's “Tiny Desk” contest, the band's forthcoming self-titled junior album, and their headlining gig in support of the release at Bowery Ballroom in January 2025. Finally, he concludes by listing his top 5 NYC venues to perform at and NYC-made albums. TIMESTAMPS0:00:00 – Intro0:03:03 – Des Rocsintro0:03:40 – Early music writing and making0:04:20 – NYC influence0:04:50 – Dana White's endorsement0:05:35 – Ian Astbury of The Cult story0:07:21 – Family and upbringing0:08:01 – Odd jobs0:08:50 – Rockville, Long Island0:09:05 – Early music influences0:09:35 – QueenLive At Wembley ‘860:10:22 – Genre-defying music & art0:11:28 – Early lyric writing0:11:50 – Dreaming of and manifesting being a musician0:12:55 – Performing in Long Island0:13:50 – 2010s NYC music influences0:14:50 – Opening for The Rolling Stones story0:17:34 – Opening for Muse story0:18:45 – Hotel orgy tour story0:20:00 – Touring economics0:21:48 – Performing in Europe0:22:10 – “I Am The Lightning”0:23:10 – Promotion through word of mouth 0:24:35 – Working with Mark Seliger on new album, Dream Machine0:25:01 – 2025 plans0:25:24 – Labels & the music industry0:26:20 – East Coast music0:27:30 – Rock ‘n' roll giants & influences0:28:48 – Top 5 East Coast artists0:29:41 – Top 5 rock albums0:31:19 – Top 5 underrated frontmen/women0:31:54 – Ian Astbury———————0:35:42 – Eamon Rush and Brian Duke of Pan Arcadiaintro0:35:58 – Abandoned Chinatown church performance0:37:05 – Eamon growing up in Manhattan & music scene then0:39:27 – Dimes Square0:40:02 – Living together as a band at “The Shack”0:41:33 – Music influences0:42:10 – 20-year music cycle0:42:45 – The Strokes 0:43:40 – Lou Reed & The Velvet Underground0:44:21 – Friendships and connectivity of current music scene & Matt Weinberger0:45:50 – Favorite NYC artists right now0:47:37 – Young band economics0:49:03 – 2021 livestream benefit concert “Save The Scene” 0:51:40 – Performing at various venues and locations 0:52:19 – Recording and mixing music0:53:08 – Upcoming music releases and influences0:53:43 – Top 5 new bands0:55:38 – Favorite new bands0:56:00 – How Eamon got banned from MSG story0:57:13 – Food drive & livestream benefit concert “Rock The Pantry”0:58:55 – Top 5 places to eat and drink in Brooklyn1:00:05 – Taking ginger shots with Scott and Marisa———————1:01:57 – Connor Abeles of Cab Ellis intro1:02:44 – Music and performance beginnings in LA and Boston1:03:45 – Music influences1:04:25 – Comparing LA vs. NYC music and energy1:06:45 – Friendships and connectivity of current music scene1:07:44 – Band information1:08:11 – Working with Gordon Raphael1:09:36 – Band name origins1:10:46 – Developing live performance style at Randall's Island Park1:12:12 – The Stooges and Iggy Pop1:13:00 – Stage diving1:14:41 – Winning NPR's “Tiny Desk” contest & musical experimentation1:16:28 – Young band economics & creative control1:17:48 – Success and looking ahead  1:18:35 – Current music scene1:19:15 – Wilmah1:20:15 – Making of upcoming junior, self-titled album 1:21:52 – Headlining Bowery Ballroom gig in January 20251:22:17 – Upcoming music releases1:22:34 – Top 5 NYC venues to perform at1:24:03 – Favorite NYC albums    Sonos makes it so easy to fill your home with incredible sound! Gordon Raphael is best known for producing Is This It and Room On Fire by The Strokes and Regina Spektor's ingenious Soviet Kitsch. He was born in New York, grew up in Seattle, and now lives in West Yorkshire, UK. From the age of 13, Gordon has been a keyboard player and later became obsessed with analog synthesizers, recording, and songwriting. His band Sky Cries Mary played a form of tribal space rock, with a 1960s-style multi-projector light show during the grunge scene in Seattle. This summer (2024) he released his 12th solo album, now streaming worldwide. Gordon's memoir, The World is Going To Love This (Up From The Basement With THE STROKES) was published in London by Wordville Press in 2022. Stories in his book include meeting Wendy Carlos and Dr. Robert Moog, detailed conversations from the recording sessions for Is This It, working with Ian Brown, Skin, The Libertines, Ian Astbury, and many others. Gordon has always taken a unique approach in his musical tastes as well as his production methods— which have kept him well outside of the traditional music industry! Well obviously my name is Josh. Basically in a nutshell as it were I was a careered musician and was very successful in many capacities. I once owned a recording studio with Gordon Raphael (producer of the strokes & Regina Spektor) after getting my own record deal I worked on my debut album with Anthony Braun Perry and Scott Montoya (both from the band the growlers) and was well on my way. I have met and worked with many successful musicians and others in the entertainment business for years, and had built up quite a catalogue of gear and equipment along with a nice shiny resume. I had a house a supportive girlfriend who actually quit her job to work with me on my career full time because she believed in mine that much. I had custody of my autistic and diabetic son from a previous relationship. Life was good then I gave it all away for one small yet very big thing. That thing was so elusive and so deceitful. It was so romantic looking and yet so insidious. That thing was heroin. I've dabbled in drugs and alcohol for a long time and they sunk their teeth into my life long ago but I was always able to go dry for a while so I thought I had it under control. Through everything I've lost and all the problems I've gained it all changed October 1st, 2021. You see after a few jail stints and a prison sentence I basically just resigned myself to drugs and thought ok music is over so I'll become a full-fledged criminal. But this last year I got in trouble once again with the law and to my surprise instead of sending me back to prison they gave me probation and when I screwed that up I thought surely they'll send me back now but they didn't; they gave me a corrections based treatment program. When I left there I relapsed once again while living with my brother and ended up getting into a huge fight with him about who was the better addict. My brother had his own demons but in his mind he was ok because he was still living in his own place with a job and a car. So he kicked me out after the fight and that was the last I ever spoke to him. I feel very fortunate indeed but it came with a price and with consequences. Sadly my brother passed away from drugs a few months ago as did my ex girlfriend so those things and a few other things blessed me with the gift of desperation. But I'll tell you, through my brother's death I was able to be reborn. On September 31st, 2021 I was parked in a car I had borrowed from a friend while he was doing some time in jail and I tried to shoot myself in the head not long after I found out about my brother. However, before I could get the gun against my temple it randomly went off right before I got it in the place I wanted. So I had just done a bunch of heroin and from the adrenaline shock and the last bit of drugs; I fell asleep and woke up to cops knocking on the window of the car I was in. They found me with a gun, drugs and all sorts of other illegal things. They should have taken me back to jail then prison, as I'm already on probation. They were about to, when all of a sudden the police officer asked me what I was doing with the gun and I told him. That was October 1st, 2021.  I relapsed in May 2022 and have been sober ever since. I go to meetings; reach out to people; and help wherever I can; and I work a 12 step program.  I honestly wish I would have started a long time ago because it's the best thing I've ever done aside from having my son. So yeah! My recovery comes first as does my program. I surrendered myself to a higher power and realized my life was unmanageable and that I desperately needed and wanted a change. Now I'm learning to love myself again and I started some projects but I'm focusing on helping other bands again but I also help other addicts. My story could be so much longer but this is as I said in a nutshell! HELP SUPPORT OUR FIGHT AGAINST ADDICTION. DONATE HERE: https://bit.ly/Fightdrugs   PART OF THE GOOD NEWS PODCAST NETWORK. Welcome back to the Process of Production! After a hiatus during which Lawrence's second son was born, we're back, and better than ever. To start the new series, we interview the one-and-only Gordon Raphael. Gordon is a producer from Seattle, Washington in the USA. After an early encounter with a synthesiser opened his eyes to the world of music production, Gordon got involved in the grunge scene in his hometown, forming bands and making weird noises on his synth. After moving to New York and setting up his basement studio Transporter-Raum, an encounter with a then-unknown band at the Luna Lounge in the Lower East side would change Gordon's life forever. The Strokes would go on to define the indie sound that dominated for the next decade, thanks to the iconic debut album ‘Is This It?', which Gordon produced, alongside the follow-up Room on Fire. Gordon moved to London, which had been the epicentre of the hype surrounding the Strokes. After a spell in Berlin, he's now relocated to Heben Bridge in Yorkshire, where he joins us from today. Gordon's book, The World Is Going To Love This: Up From The Basement With The Strokes, is out July 2nd 2022. The Process of Production is a music production podcast presented by Lawrence Diamond and Bob Matthews. Lawrence cut his teeth playing and writing in Indie bands before finding international success and touring the world with his band CITIZENS! During that time he worked with a host of revered producers including Liam Howe, Mark Ralph and Alex Kapranos. Since the band ended in 2016 he's been using that experience to help other artists develop their careers as a writer and producer while continuing to release his own music under various different guises. Bob learned his trade as the producer and multi-instrumentalist in Electronic Pop duo Alpines, whose career spans 3 albums, releases on major and indie record labels, shows with Florence + The Machine, The xx, Emeli Sandé, and a top 20 hit 'Tidal Wave' in collaboration with Sub Focus. In recent years he has turned his focus to producing other acts and has a studio in Chiswick in West London. So he doesn't say much and we get in the car and I assume I'm going back to jail to finish my sentence and we pull up to this building I've never seen and I say where are we? He says I'm bringing you here to detox because I don't think you need jail or prison again. You have quite a rap sheet and it won't fix you to go back. I think you need help, so do yourself a favor and get it. That was my higher power working in my life and I felt it for the first time in a long time. That was October 1st, 2021 and I've been sober ever since.

Wow. Gordon Raphael! You're probably most familiar with Gordon through his work producing two timeless and hugely influential records in 2001 and 2003 for a band who re-captured the rock n roll romance and mythology - or is that reality?  - of New York City…..…..they are, of course, The Strokes. He's also a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and performer who has released an amount of music that I'm ashamed to say took me by surprise. He is also an author with an imminent debut memoir which promises to be a fascinating insight into his life's journey up to working with The Strokes. His subsequent production work has been with wonderful artists such as Blonde Redhead, Regina Spektor (Soviet Kitsch), Jody Porter, Hinds, Colleen Green and Atomic Stop.I Wanna Jump Like Dee Dee is a music podcast that does music interviews differently. I'm Giles Sibbald and I'm talking to extraordinary musicians, DJ's and producers about how they use an experimental mindset in their lives to amplify their own creativity, pursue new challenges, overcome fears and bounce back from mistakes.- brought to you by Hey Sunday, the mothership of the experimental mindset™.- podcast logo and art by Tide Adesanya, Coppie and Paste

Escuchar audio

It's good prattling though* Gordon gives us the inside track on the music that kicked off not just The Strokes' career, but a whole era in indie rock'n'roll on both sides of the Atlantic:  His memories of meeting Julian Casablancas and co for the first time after a show in a New York bar How 'The Modern Age' went from being a three-track demo recorded over a couple of days to an EP that sparked a record company bidding war All the juicy detail on the recording of The Strokes' generation-defining debut album 'Is This It', including a track-by-track run through and studio secrets Gordon also talks us through his work on the band's follow-up LP 'Room on Fire' and third album 'First Impressions of Earth', a project which he would ultimately exit before completion.  We also delve into Gordon's own weird and wonderful musical career pre-Strokes and find out who he has been working with more recently now he's based in the UK. From the Jabber and the Drone podcast (jabberandthedrone.podbean.com), Cassidy Robinson joins Bill and Brian to discuss the final installment of Debut Album January, the Strokes' Is This It (2001, RCA). Coming together in New York City and first gaining a following in the UK, the Strokes were a breath of fresh air during a period of nu metal, boy bands, and emo. We talk about when Cassidy first discovered the band, listening to them while riding the bus to school, and how it changed his outlook on the aural landscape available to him as a fan of music. Before we get to our track by track review, we discuss the lasting impact the band made even though they were unable to maintain the level of quality on their first few releases. Additionally, we cover the possible reasons for starting an album with a low key song, which song sounds the most like a Velvet Underground song, stabby guitars, the unique production style of Gordon Raphael, which song sounds like the best song Weezer didn't write, the "conversation" between musicians when a song is being arranged, and more!

Vier hochgelobte Alben im Gepäck. Missy Magazin Cover. PodTV - Alterativo

O nome WRY no português significa torto, distorcido, estranho e irônico. Já dividiram o mesmo palco com bandas como The Rakes, The Subways, The Cribs, Fleeing New York, Houston500 e The Parkinsons. Lançaram o single Come And Fall/Where I Stand no começo de 2005 e estão preparando o lançamento de Airport Girl/In The Hell Of My Head pela Reckless Records/GooMusic para 2006, seguido de uma turnê pela Inglaterra. Wry também foi convidado a participar da coletânea “Never Lose That Feeling” de bandas novas fazendo covers de clássicos indie e shoegaze. Wry vai fazer “Some Candy Talking” do Jesus and Mary Chain. Coletânea “Sound Issues2” junto com bandas como The Magic Numbers e The Rakes. Wry entra com a inédita When I Go, gravada em Londres. Além da banda o vocalista Mario Bross promove duas noites Londrinas chamadas Goonite Club e Club Take Me To The Other Side, em lugares consagrados do rock britânico: Buffalo Bar e The Garage. Hoje Wry escuta bandas como Razorlight, The Strokes, U2, Legiao Urbana, Walkmen, NIN, Bloc Party, Test Icicles, Sonic Youth e My Bloody Valentine. Como Goo Goo Meginee Tour 2000/01, I LOVE&HATE YOU BRAZIL tour 2002 e a última WRY EM CHAMAS NO BRAZIL 2005/2006.
