After the heavy, guitar-driven science fiction epic Arise (2023), Glass Hammer returns with the band's most accessible album yet. Co-founder Steve Babb returns to Michael's Record Collection to discuss the brand new album Rogue, the most human of all Glass Hammer's concept albums. Drenched in keyboards, Rogue shares connective tissue with some of Glass Hammer's most beloved albums, with hints of Genesis and Yes mixed with dream pop, space rock, and 80s synth pop influences. Steve was kind enough to share the stories behind the concept and the music with me. Find out more about the band at glasshammer.com or order their music at glasshammer.bandcamp.com. There were so many great albums from 2023 suggested by our friends at The Progressive Aspect that two shows were not enough! So this week's Prog-Watch has More of the Best of 2023, with music from Bruce Soord, Galahad, Nova Cascade, Moon Safari, Solstice, Nick Fletcher, Glass Hammer, and The Flower Kings!
Lots of fantastic stuff on Prog-Watch this week, from Cyan, Dandelion Charm, Glass Hammer, Ruby Dawn, Jack o' the Clock, Residuous Mentales, Peter Gabriel, and Moon Safari! As if that was not enough, there will also be new music by three artists featured in the current edition of PROG Magazine: Spurv, Zahn, and Skald! Plus, our first Listener Prog Story from Charles Anderson of York, England!
Just when you think you know Glass Hammer, everything changes...the lineup, the vocalist, the style. Arise is another concept album from the Tennessee-based progressive rock project headed by Steve Babb (and, usually, Fred Schendel), but it's the band's first space opera. It's also a much heavier album than what longtime Glass Hammer fans are used to hearing. Steve was kind enough to talk to me about the new album, which drops next week, as well as his musical past, how he met Fred, some of the artists who inspire him, and much more. Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of Interviewing the Legends I'm your host Ray Shasho Glass Hammer is an American progressive rock band from Chattanooga, Tennessee. They formed in 1992 when multi-instrumentalists Steve Babb and Fred Schendel began to write and record “Journey of the Dunadan”, a concept album based on the story of Aragorn from The Lord of the Rings. Glass Hammer is Progressive rock at its finest! First came Dreaming City (2021), followed by Skallagrim – Into the Breach (2022). Now Glass Hammer returns to the cursed realm of Andorath with Part III of their Skallagrim trilogy, AT THE GATE their most recent release. The album's narrative concludes the sword and sorcery-inspired tale of the thief with the screaming sword, a “desperate man” who lost his lover and his memory. Lead vocalist, Hannah Pryor, joins Steve Babb, Fred Schendel, and Aaron Raulston. Singer John Beagley and former Glass Hammer vocalist Jon Davison (now of YES) make guest appearances. Musically Glass Hammer's most apparent influences are Yes, Kansas, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, and to a less noticeable extent, Genesis. While Glass Hammer has, for the most part, combined those influences into a characteristic style of their own. PLEASE WELCOME BASSIST/KEYBOARDIST SINGER/SONGWRITER/AUTHOR/ STEVE BABB AND SINGER HANNAH PRYOR OF PROGRESSIVE ROCK GROUP GLASS HAMMER TO INTERVIEWING THE LEGENDS …. PURCHASE THE LATEST RELEASE BY GLASS HAMMER Entitled AT THE GATE At https://glasshammer.com/official-store/ and amazon.com ALSO PURCHASE STEVEN BABB'S BOOK SKALLAGRIM IN THE VALUES OF PAGARNA BOOK ONE At amazon.com “And those monsters saw not a young man with a sword but a scarred and screaming horror with the rising red doom of the sun at his back and a hellishly shrieking, flashing, living sword in his hands.” Skallagrim wakes in the middle of a fight for his life with only the vaguest idea of who he is. Facing an angry mob of murderous cutthroats, he watches helplessly while the love of his life is abducted before his eyes. Finally, with a crushing sense of despair, he realizes he's going to die without even knowing her name. But he doesn't die. To find the girl and take his revenge upon the fiend who took her, Skallagrim, wounded and exhausted, must endure a journey like no other. He'll face madmen, ghouls, tentacled horrors, and witches, both foul and fair, as he races toward a final showdown that will have readers on the edge of their seats. An awe-inspiring tale of adventure, triumph, and tragedy, set in a brutal, unforgiving wilderness and packed with heart-stopping action, Skallagrim – In The Vales Of Pagarna marks the first installment of an outstanding new series. Is the sum greater than (or ever equal to) the parts? In this case, Fake Names is the sum and the parts are Refused, Minor Threat, Dag Nasty, Embrace, One Last Wish, Soulside, Girls Against Boys and Fugazi. It's a tall order to be sure and the supergroup pulls from some varied influences, some more expected than others. How close do they get to their lineage. We discuss (without surprisingly little debate). Today I'm going to do something a little bit unusual. The youtube user Cro - Mag-non, as in Cro Mag non Man donated some money and wanted me to share an essay with you guys. I've already had a couple requests to do a video where I'm reading someone else's script but had to turn them down. One was extremely hateful and angry and the other one didn't make any sense. So I had to tell both people, no I'm not going to read your script and sent them their money back. The script Cro - Mag-non sent is different. It's well written and relevant and it's about men dealing with women in positions of authority in the workplace. So thank you Cro-Mag-non for your donation, let me read your script and then I'll go into my own analysis afterwords. This is what Cro-Mag non has to say: "As Female Supervisors, managers, Course leaders, and directors are now everywhere You will have to learn and develop new strategies in order to take them on, should they decide to oppose your interests and rights. They are neither the alpha dog or the Charismatic rogue nor are they a bullish lesbian. their behavior follows none of these patterns in any way. So how do they operate? Women have moved into the workplace and seek to usurp economic power for themselves, this creates competition. We all know the broad strokes of feminism and its emasculation through indoctrination. However, what tools do women rely upon when they are embedded in a power structure such as the work space, Government, or Education? The forging of the glass hammer comes about as women desire power but have an extreme aversion to risk. Power has to be wielded which means responsibility must also be established, women want the power but not the risk of being held to account for its use. Dealing with competition directly may end in humiliation and a loss of status for a woman. So being direct carries the risk of culpability. In spite of this women like to lead, but not from the front. They like to use leading questions so that the opposite party substantiates their point for them. If you refuse to be led what other methods does she have at her disposal? She has the glass hammer Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/mgtow/donations Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands Privacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Under the consistent guidance of Steve Babb and Fred Schendel, American proggers Glass Hammer have been around for close to 30 years without interruption and with quite a sizeable discography to show for it. Members have come and gone and come back again, and many styles and epic tracks are strewn through their catalog. But with such varied output as albums inspired by Tolkien and C.S. Lewis through more accessible and hard-driving tracks, what five sub-10-minute songs will be chosen as representative of the group? Your intrepid host takes a shot. Do you agree with the choices? Visit the band at www.glasshammer.com for merchandise and albums like the brand new Dreaming City and the Ultimate Middle Earth Download. Steve Babb, bassist and founding member of Glass Hammer, shares a few songs that have inspired him over the years in this episode of My Prog Five.
Six years ago, multi-instrumentalist Geoff Barone was on the program discussing his conceptual work Conversation Pieces. He's back this year with a somewhat heavier and, in his words, more "to the point" collection of songs titled Acquiescence. With echoes of the likes of Devin Townsend and even some musical theater, this eclectic album covers topics from his ambivalent relationship with the city he came to and later left -- New York -- and how he hopes his children will turn out all right, among many others. Hear some insights into his inspirations and influences in his chat with host Mark Ashby. Lady Obscure editor Lacy Mucklow and her concert-going pal Dave Perrussel (also a LO contributor) have a first-person report of their journey from their homebase in Washington, DC, all the way to Anubis Gate's home country of Denmark for one of the gigs on their "Shortest Tour Ever." And our Triple Track Special uses the theme of Babylon in three songs from prog artists present and past. Find the artists featured here at www.geoffbarone.com and www.anubisgate.com. Featured songs/excerpts: "Something Beautiful" (Geoff Barone) "Faded" (Geoff Barone) "Precious Pieces" (Geoff Barone) "Headhunter" (Geoff Barone) "6:33 to Babylon" (Geoff Barone) "In These Waiting Arms" (Geoff Barone) "Babylon" (Glass Hammer) "Blackest" (Anubis Gate) "Erasure" (Anubis Gate) "Babylon" (Aphrodite's Child) "Like" Progtopia on Facebook (www.facebook.com/Progtopia and www.facebook.com/groups/1380357308874546/) and follow Progtopia on Twitter (@Progtopia) to send a message about the show and to receive news about current and upcoming interviews. Have you ever felt the pain when your business role conflicts with your personal or family roles? Every business owner wears multiple hats: CEO, marketer, IT consultant, researcher, etc. It's tough enough to manage those roles alongside ordinary family roles, but when life throws you a curveball, the difficulties multiply. Maybe you're responsible for transporting a child to a prestigious and time-consuming new activity that could pave the way for a college scholarship, or maybe you're suddenly facing a family member's serious illness. Whatever the cause, your business can thrive only if you're able to manage your family responsibilities and have energy left over. Listen as Julie shares the perspectives and practical tips she's gained while running her consultancy and serving as caregiver for her father, who is now in the severe stage of Alzheimer's Disease. Before and after the show, please post your questions for Jory and Julie on Jory's Facebook Business Page. Julie A. Fleming, principal of Lex Innova Consulting, helps lawyers to create/implement innovative business development plans. She is the author of three books (The Reluctant Rainmaker: A Guide for Lawyers Who Hate Selling, Seven Foundations of Time Mastery for Attorneys, and Legal Rainmaking Mistakes: What You Think You Know About Business Development Can Kill Your Practice), as well as numerous articles on topics such as business development, practice management, work/life balance, and leadership development. Before launching her consulting business, Julie practiced law for over a decade in both large and small firms, focusing on patent litigation. Julie has appeared in diverse publications including The Practical Lawyer (ALI CLE), Trial magazine (American Association for Justice), The Bencher (American Inns of Court), ABA Now (American Bar Association), and The Glass Hammer.
