We tend to believe consciousness is purely mental. And since Descartes' "I think therefore I am", we've privileged the mind as the centrepiece of thought and consciousness. But such a view is mistaken argues award-winning neuroscientist Antonio Damasio.Feelings, long dismissed as secondary to thinking, are where consciousness begins, and are deeply rooted in the body and its physical processes. Join Damasio as he presents a new theory of consciousness and undoes the philosophical separation between mind and body posed by Descartes.Antonio Damasio is an award-winning neuroscientist known for his pioneering work on emotions, intuitions and the biological origins of consciousness. He is the author of several books including Descartes' Error and The Strange Order of Things. Matthew David Segall, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Philosophy, Cosmology, and Consciousness Department at California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco, and the Chair of the Science Advisory Committee for the Cobb Institute. He is a transdisciplinary researcher, writer, teacher, and philosopher applying process-relational thought across the natural and social sciences, as well as to the study of consciousness. He describes himself as a “process philosopher” and transdisciplinary researcher, reflecting his commitment to bridging multiple fields. Segall's work builds on the metaphysical framework of Alfred North Whitehead, extending Whitehead's philosophy of organism into new domains of science, religion, and ecology. In doing so, Segall reinterprets the Western philosophical lineage – from ancient ideas of a world-soul to German Idealism and beyond – to articulate a participatory, organismic vision of nature. His philosophy portrays a cosmos ensouled with meaning and experience, challenging mechanistic materialism and inviting a renewed dialogue between science and spirit. Segall integrates insights from Whitehead, Schelling, Goethe, and Steiner into a process worldview, develops an organic (panpsychist) cosmology, practices a bold transdisciplinary methodology, and engages public dialogues that embody a form of sacred activism on behalf of our living planet.TIMESTAMPS:(0:00) - Introduction (0:43) - History of Mind-Body Problem(7:40) - Critiquing Physicalism(12:55) - Quantum Theory Interpretations(16:14) - Addressing Illusionism & Scientism(22:00) - The Metaphysics of Prehension(28:14) - Panexperientialism in Physics(31:55) - Propositional Feelings(37:09) - What is Consciousness?(45:00) - Panexperientialism & Free Will(50:00) - Bridging Science & Philosophy(54:42) - Challenging the Cold/Dead Universe tale(1:00:39) - Misconceptions about Matt's work(1:04:20) - Telos(1:07:44) - Matt's Philosopher recommendations(1:13:00) - Mind At Large (Upcoming Events!)(1:17:40) - Conclusion EPISODE LINKS:- Matt's Website: https://footnotes2plato.com-  @Footnotes2Plato : http://www.youtube.com/@Footnotes2Plato- Physics Within the Bounds of Feeling Alone: https://footnotes2plato.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/physics-within-the-bounds-of-feeling-alone.pdf- Matt's X: https://x.com/ThouArtThat- Matt's Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/matthew.david.segall- Matt's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/matthewdavidsegall- Matt's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/footnotes2platoCONNECT:- Website: https://tevinnaidu.com - Podcast: https://creators.spotify.com/pod/show/mindbodysolution- YouTube: https://youtube.com/mindbodysolution- Twitter: https://twitter.com/drtevinnaidu- Facebook: https://facebook.com/drtevinnaidu - Instagram: https://instagram.com/drtevinnaidu- LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/drtevinnaidu=============================Disclaimer: The information provided on this channel is for educational purposes only. Many critical thinkers have rightfully wondered why gender dysphoria is treated in clinical settings any differently from anorexia, body integrity identity disorder, and other psychiatric ailments featuring a mind-body problem. Today's guest is the right person to answer that question.Jaco van Zyl, a South Africa-trained clinical psychologist now practicing in Ireland, joins me to discuss his paper, "Formulating Gender Dysphoria as an Affective-Perceptual Disturbance Involving the Body," which was recently published in the journal Psychodynamic Practice. Jaco shares his insights on the psychological underpinnings of gender dysphoria, particularly in adolescents, and critiques the current activist-driven narratives that often overshadow psychodynamic perspectives. We explore the developmental journey of infants and how early experiences shape their understanding of identity and bodily sensations. Jaco emphasizes the importance of navigating the pleasure and reality principles, a concept rooted in psychoanalytic theory, and how failures in this process can lead to arrested development. We also discuss the implications of ideologies that discourage critical thinking about gender identity, highlighting the dangers of treating distress as a literal interpretation of one's body.Throughout our conversation, we aim to unpack the complexities of gender dysphoria, the role of early attachment experiences, and the potential consequences of affirming practices that may overlook deeper psychological issues. This episode invites listeners to consider the intersection of psychoanalysis, gender identity, and the importance of fostering a more nuanced understanding of these critical topics.Jaco van Zyl is a South Africa-trained Clinical Psychologist in private practice in Ireland. He has worked in the Department of Correctional Services, and in private practice at a psychiatric hospital in South Africa. Jaco has a special interest in personality pathology and its relationship with mood and anxiety disorders, trauma-spectrum disorders, gender-related distress, eating disorders and addiction. He is also interested in the psychology of large-groups, gleaning from his own experience growing up in South Africa, and the role ideology plays in mass illusion in political and ideological movements. He is a co-director of Critical Therapy Antidote, a UK-based organisation consisting of clinicians concerned with the ideological take-over of the psychology and psychotherapy field. Jaco is also the co-host of the CTA Podcast, where he and his co-hosts, Christine Sefein and Michael Olan, discuss topics related to psychology, psychological practice, and society.Books mentioned in this episode are listed below. The Luck Factor: The Scientific Study of the Lucky Mind by Richard WisemanView my complete list of book recommendations, including those written by authors who have been guests on this show, at https://sometherapist.com/bookshop.As an Amazon affiliate, I earn a small commission from qualifying purchases made through affiliate links from my show notes or website. “When medical doctors or psychiatrists entertain incoherent ideas about the mind and body, they make bad decisions about how to assist us in being well.” - Diane O'Leary. Understanding how the mind and body are connected in mental health and medicine is critical, especially considering that when we fail to do so, many are harmed. Despite drawing on the Biopsychosocial model for the last few decades, psychiatry hasn't gotten much closer to elucidating the connections between the mind, body, and society. Today, Diane O'Leary explains to us psychiatry's big philosophy problem and how it leads to huge ethical concerns. In an effort to ‘not be dualists' psychiatry often tries to lump the mental and physical together, but in doing so, fails to approach clients as ‘holists'. Here's how we can bring the person back into mental health. In this episode we discuss: why medically unexplained physiological symptoms get labeled as ‘in your head' why the way to be a ‘holist' is not about eradicating dualism or separating mind and body why the biopsychosocial model is incoherent and doesn't do justice to patients the roots of bad philosophy in psychiatry women's health and the history of manipulation in psychosomatic medicine why psychiatry needs to reevaluate its bioethics and respect patients' rights and personhood Bio Diane O'Leary, PhD is a philosopher whose research focuses on medicine and psychiatry. In particular, she sets out to apply philosophy of mind in a way that helps to clarify what biomedicine and psychiatry are aiming for with holistic practice – and what they should be aiming for. Dr. O'Leary is Professor of Philosophy at University of Maryland Global Campus, and a former visiting researcher at the Center for Philosophy of Science at University of Pittsburgh. She's a strong advocate for change in the area of psychosomatic medicine, and she's currently a Public Voices Fellow on Advancing the Rights of Women and Girls with The Oped Project and Equality Now. https://www.dianeoleary.com/ Links: Institute for the Development of Human Arts: www.idha-nyc.org Sessions & Information about the host: JazmineRussell.com Resources How to be a Holist who Rejects the Biopsychosocial Model https://eujap.uniri.hr/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/17_2_5.pdf John Read on the “Bio bio bio model” https://citeseerx.ist.psu.edu/document?repid=rep1&type=pdf&doi=fc53f77bec3514fe6c66f9216be662a89b78fa27 Prozac's rebrand for PMDD to Serafim - https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/politics/2001/04/29/renamed-prozac-fuels-womens-health-debate/b05311b4-514a-4e65-aaa5-434cb2934271/ & https://www.minnpost.com/second-opinion/2016/11/how-premenstrual-dysphoric-disorder-was-defined-and-marketed-drug-makers/#:~:text=Lilly rebranded Prozac%2C changing the,feminine-sounding name — Sarafem. They also discuss the potential dangers of AI in its current state and why starting fresh instead of iterating can make all the difference in achieving characteristics of AI that might resemble consciousness. Show notesWhy consciousness for this episode?Enough listeners have randomly asked the hosts if Skynet is on the horizonDoes modern or future AI have the wherewithal to take over the world, and is it even conscious or intelligent? Do we even have a good definition of consciousness?Introducing Michael Herman as guest speakerCo-founder of Monitaur, Engineer extraordinaire, and creator of TestDriven.io, a training company that focuses on educating and upskilling mid-level senior-level web developers.Degree and studies in philosophy and technologyEstablishing the philosophical foundation of consciousnessConsciousness is around us everywhere. It can mean different things to different people. Most discussion about the subject bypasses the Mind-Body Problem and a few key theories:Dualism - the mind and body are distinctMaterialism - matter is king and consciousness arises in complex material systemsPanpsychism - consciousness is king. It underlies everything at the quantum levelThe potential dangers of achieving consciousness in AIWhile there is potential for AI to reach consciousness, we're far from that point. Dangers are more related to manipulation and misinformation, rather than the risk of conscious machines turning against humanity. The need for a new approach to developing AI systemsThere's a need to start from scratch if the goal is to achieve consciousness in AI systems.Current modeling techniques might not lead to AI achieving consciousness. A new paradigm might be required. There's a need to define what consciousness in AI means and to develop a test for it. Final thoughts and wrap-upIf consciousness is truly the goal, the case for starting from scratch allows for fairness and ethics to be established foundationallyAI systems should be built with human values in mindWhat did you think? In this episode from the Institute's Vault we hear from Rebecca Goldstein, an American philosopher, novelist, and public intellectual. She holds a Ph.D. in philosophy of science from Princeton University, and has written ten books, both fiction and non-fiction. Her first book was her 1983 novel, The Mind Body Problem. Goldstein spoke to the Institute in 2006 about her book, Betraying Spinoza: The Renegade Jew Who Gave Us Modernity (Schocken Books, 2009). A bit about the book:  In 1656, Amsterdam's Jewish community excommunicated Baruch Spinoza, and, at the age of twenty-three, he became the most famous heretic in Judaism. He was already germinating a secularist challenge to religion that would be as radical as it was original. He went on to produce one of the most ambitious systems in the history of Western philosophy, so ahead of its time that scientists today, from string theorists to neurobiologists, count themselves among Spinoza's progeny. In Betraying Spinoza, Rebecca Goldstein sets out to rediscover the flesh-and-blood man often hidden beneath the veneer of rigorous rationality, and to crack the mystery of the breach between the philosopher and his Jewish past. Goldstein argues that the trauma of the Inquisition' s persecution of its forced Jewish converts plays itself out in Spinoza's philosophy. The excommunicated Spinoza, no less than his excommunicators, was responding to Europe' s first experiment with racial anti-Semitism. Here is a Spinoza both hauntingly emblematic and deeply human, both heretic and hero--a surprisingly contemporary figure ripe for our own uncertain age. Learn more about your ad choices. Second holiday season bonus episode! Vaden joins Chesto on The Declaration (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-declaration-podcast/id1433998370) podcast to talk about monism, dualism, the reality of abstractions, emergence, and reductionism. This convo was recorded in 2019, but much of the content is evergreen and we think it still makes for interestin' listenin'. Except the sound quality, which leaves much to be desired. Thanks Blue Yeti. We discuss: - The mind-body problem - Why Vaden is a filthy pluralist and Chesto is a sober, sane, rational materialist - Reductonism vs dualism vs pluralism - The reality of abstractions - Why explanations are central to science - Would you get into a Star Trek transporter? - And, a little bit out of left field, some advice for talking about mental health References: - Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid (https://smile.amazon.com/G%C3%B6del-Escher-Bach-Eternal-Golden/dp/0465026567?sa-no-redirect=1) - Beginning of Infinity (https://www.amazon.ca/Beginning-Infinity-Explanations-Transform-World/dp/0143121359) - Chesto's instagram (https://www.instagram.com/mynameischesto/?hl=en) for your eyes and soundcloud (https://soundcloud.com/mynameischesto) for your ears. What exactly is the relationship between the mind and the brain? Can scientifically studying spiritual experiences give us any insight into the mind/body problem? If we look at near death experiences, mediums, and reincarnation will we see evidence that the mind is more than the brain? Or will considering spiritual experiences make me look like a crazy person? In order to figure this out I decided to have a chat with a psychiatrist named Alexander Moreira-Almeida. Credits Host: R.T. Mullins (PhD, University of St Andrews) is a visiting professor of philosophy at Palm Beach Atlantic University. Guest: Alexander Moreira-Almeida (PhD, Federal University of Juiz de Fora; MD, University of Sao Paulo) is an associate professor of psychiatry at Federal University of Juiz de Fora.
