We premiere new music from revered house producer José Cabrera as he releases his Le Bateleur LP on his A Harmless Deed imprint. We feature ‘A Track for Clau', a Detroit-laced house groove that is rolling in futuristic funk. Accomplished Spanish artist José Cabrera enters a fresh creative chapter with the new album Le Bateleur. The storytelling and hugely personal record arrives on his own A Harmless Deed label and is a deep dive into the house music he has always loved. Over the last two decades and under several aliases, Madrid-born Cabrera established himself as a leading techno producer. He has released influential labels like Fred P's Soul People Music, Tresor, Deeply Rooted and Ron Moreli`s' L.I.E.S. records and co-runs A Harmless Deed with friend Damian Schwartz. As a DJ he has toured Europe, Asia, North and South America and proven himself to be an experimental DJ with a long-standing residency at Tresor in Berlin. When the pandemic hit in 2020, Cabrera felt detached from the techno world so used his time at home to explore new sounds. He has always had a love of house so set work on making a proper house record in the mold of greats who went before. He worked with other musicians and vocalists, made use of an array of Roland drum machines, Juno synths and Casio keys to cook up a raw and authentic sound and drew from a wide range of the back music that has soundtracked his life. The resulting album is packed with life and energy, skits from friends and timeless grooves. ‘Track For Clau' is a hyper-speed future house groove that is bursting with bumping kicks, bouncing bass rhythms and busy synth arps bringing the light to a glossy uplifting house record. This has all the makings of a classic Detroit record, with a new-groove polished finish. Fred P’s music is not just deep, but spiritual. Under his own name as well as Black Jazz Consortium, FP-Oner and FP197, the man from Queens, New York imbues his bottomless grooves with pensive pads and emotionally loaded keys that sink you into another dimension. His DJ sets are also cathartic experiences for mind, body and soul, and he’s remained hugely prolific over the course of more than 11 LPs and 20 EPs during the last decade. His eternal aim is “to raise each other's consciousness”, and he never fails to do that whether playing all night long at one of his residences or serving up releases on his own Soul People Music. In October, that label came to an end after more than a decade, only to make way for Perpetual Sound, which launched with a new Black Jazz Consortium EP featuring remixes from Mr G and Fred P. His emotionally awakening style is present and correct on this 90 minute mix he serves up for us. It starts with warm and cavernous atmospheres and the sort of balmy pads and tight basslines that define his sound, before progressing into a zoned out techno sound. Always smooth and meditative, moments of jazzy musicality are never far away, and there is a timeless nature to everything Fred does. Without him, then, dance music wouldn’t be anywhere near as deep.
Berlin-based DJ Esther Duijn recorded this set at Pornceptual in Berlin over the summer and the dark sound brings a serious late night vibe to the forefront. She is a busy touring DJ who has released records on labels that include Fred P's Soul People Music and her own imprint, Another Earth. Esther just released a new EP on Dubai's KitchenSync Records and has a vinyl-only release coming out on Another Earth in September, featuring tracks from Dave Simon and Anders Ilar & John H.
Fred Peterkin is a man of many names; best known for his work as Fred P he also releases under Black Jazz Consortium, FP-Oner, FP197, Anomaly, the list goes on. But no matter what name he picks for each project there's an unmistakable sound that runs across all his work, and that sound is born from a passionate and unending dedication to underground house music. Hailing from New York City Peterkin has released an impressive number of records over the past decade working with labels like Jus Ed's Underground Quality and Mule Music alongside his own imprint – Soul People Music. And, while his style is deeply rooted in house music, he is by no means limited to the genre. As well as producing, he's also a natural DJ who blends expertly applied craft with a simple musical intuition that can't be taught. With an album under his Adventures of Captain P moniker dropping soon, and him passing through London to play Oval Space, we jumped at the chance to meet up with him in his hotel room and find out what makes him tick. Parisian young techno stars Ka One & St-Sene have been kind enough to put together an hour long mix of some of their finest deep techno tracks. Coming off the back of the incredible “Inside Silent EP” on Ornate music the duo don’t see themselves slowing down in the near future, with their own imprint Flyance records having a strong and consistent output. The pair also have future EPs coupled with Fred P’s ‘Soul People Music’ and Jef K’s ‘Silver Network’ set to be released later this year. The future is bright for this duo, take the journey and see for yourself.

As we hit episode 20 of the Avenue Red Podcast series we welcome a veteran of Deep House & Techno, Esther Duijn from Amsterdam, Holland. Esther has been busy with her musical mission from a young age and has honed in on her own distinctive style of House & Techno with lots of groove and atmosphere with distinct dubby overtones, sometimes skirting along the fringes of the true Dub Techno sound. As a solo artist and also together with her partner Steady Douglas under their Duijn&Douglas moniker, Esther has 18 vinyl releases to her name across a range of solid labels including Earth Tones, Exquisite Music, Soul People Music, Feelharmonic Records and Housewax to name a few. Esther is a resident DJ at Sisyphos, Berlin, co-organiser of Donker at Club Up in Amsterdam and also hosts a Berlin night called Another Earth that has had the likes of Moritz von Oswald, Anton Zap and Tom Ellis as guests. Panorama Bar, Zur Wilden Renate, Wanted! (clubs in Berlin); Berns, Kruthuset (clubs in Stockholm); Studio 80, Trouw (clubs in Amsterdam) are a few of the other more noteworthy nightspots to have embraced her sound to date. She is also playing at Freerotation Festival (England) and Tomorrowland Festival (Belgium) this summer, so make sure you catch her playing if you're lucky enough to make it to either of these events! This mix is just over an hours-worth of Esther doing what she does best - ripping through a bunch of dancefloor-friendly house and techno records and keeping things interesting, atmospheric, deep, raw and never loosing her focus on the groove. Enjoy the mix! @esther-duijn ===== No tracklist was provided for this mix, but do feel free to ask for track ID's in the comments.
Bristol-based DJ October established his style of New York-indebted house and techno with a string of sought after releases for the likes of BRSTL, Aus and Fred P’s Soul People Music, while he now finds a regular home on Skudge and his own TANSTAAFL label (an acronym for 'There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch') that he runs with Berlin’s John Osborn. In this mix he strays from the usual hard house and smoky techno, smashing together a slew of snarling post-punk, EBM, New Beat and industrial. It’s a bit of a special one, this. INTERVIEW + TRACKLIST > www.inverted-audio.com/fred-p Fred P aka Black Jazz Consortium has become one of the key players in New York City's resurgent house scene. Having setup and established his own record label Soul People Music in 2005, he's primarily operated it as an outlet for himself but has also released tracks from the likes of Move D and Jus-Ed. Ahead of his performance in room 2 at Fabric on Saturday 23rd February we caught up with the Fred Peterkin for a short Q+A on his musical heritage, analog gear and forthcoming releases. Fred has provided a suitably deep mix, laden with hypnotic tracks from the likes of Deadbeat, Marcel Dettmann, Norman Nodge, Frozen Border, Truncate and many more. His aim is to create a warm up of his performance at Fabric.
Fred P. of Soul People Music was on the decks at Vesvese ile Sali Sallanir last October. Here is his mix from that night. Many thanks to Fred for sharing this!
