For the Thirteenth episode of There Is No Planet Earth Stories I'm  Join by guest Doc Martin  representing stories from San Francisco & Los AngelesWe discuss a range of topics including his formative musical experiences in San Francisco, the Los Angeles scene in the early 90's and various parties and residencies held in those years, as well as the evolution of his DJ, and music production career over the years, and much more.A product of the 80's San Francisco dance music boom, DJ/Producer Doc Martin has been creating innovative, high-energy electronic music for nearly three decades. Once a mainstay on the Pacific Northwest scene, he has gone on to perform everywhere from Ibiza to Tokyo, London and beyond, creating an enduring body of work in the process. Now, as he enters a new phase of his career, Doc shows no signs of slowing down, as he continues to evolve, revealing new sides of his artistry as he releases the most compelling music of his career.  Doc Martin's choice to pursue a career in music was an obvious one, given the musical family he grew up in. Most notably, his mother sang with Bay Area icons Jefferson Starship.Doc, however, was more interested in absorbing the various electronic subcultures that were emerging around the country. Endless hours spent in SF's indie record stores armed him with an expertise in everything from acid house to techno, as he developed the genre bending style that would come to define his career.  Within a few years of his first performance, Doc was selling out shows across his hometown, and began setting his sights on bigger things. In the early 90's, he relocated to Los Angeles, where he quickly integrated himself into the city's thriving rave scene. Not long after, his profile had risen enough for him to be invited to Europe to play at some of the continent's most iconic clubs and parties, including Fabric(Residency), Circoloco, The Rex, Panorama Bar, and Sunwaves to name a few,. In the ensuing decades, he became a favorite amongst audiences from New York to London, performing regularly at clubs including Output, Coachella, The Roxy, Twilo, City Fox, Space, Desert Hearts, Movement, and Lightning in a bottle After three decades of bringing people together with music, Doc Martin's passion and drive remain as strong as ever. He maintains a steady schedule of performances across the globe while continuing to release new tracks regularly. As the rare artist to achieve the status of elder-statesman, he has left a lasting legacy in electronic music, a legacy which he continues to add to every day. Also played with James Brown/Grace Jones/Tour Dj for Deee-lite,Support the show

"It starts within yourself." The DJ, vocalist and producer talks about self-improvement, moving to rural Portugal and working alongside long-time partner Steffi. There may be no voice as rich, vibrant or easily distinguishable in today's house and techno scene than that of Virginia. The Brazilian-German DJ, producer and singer has earned a name for herself as a hybrid house vocalist and a resident at Panorama Bar, where she plays sets featuring her own live vocals. Born in Munich to a family of musicians, she became enamoured with the soulful singing of artists like Sade, Whitney Houston and Tracy Chapman, who became her early guiding lights. It wasn't until her adolescence, when her sister took her to a nightclub, that it crossed her mind to begin blending these two musical worlds. By the mid-2010s, Virginia had relocated to Berlin to earnestly pursue a career in electronic music and create a new, house-focused musical vocabulary that's become completely her own. It was around this time that Virginia met her long-time partner, fellow DJ and producer Steffi. In this week's Exchange, she speaks with Chloe Lula about their personal and creative relationship, and their love of collaborating together in the studio and behind the decks. After more than two decades in Berlin, the couple relocated to rural Portugal in 2020, a move that's opened up a world of abundant rest and opportunity. They opened up a studio and residency called Candy Mountain (so called for its veritable candy shop of synthesizers and hardware), where they've found a new appreciation for taking things slow: going on walks in the countryside, engaging in botany and inviting friends and collaborators over to work on music. She reflects on what it means to step away from the demands of Berlin's bustling music industry and why her voice has remained such a powerful source of energy and inspiration over the course of her career, and her forthcoming album with Steffi on Dekmantel, Patterns of Vibration. He is, of course, equally adept in the studio, be it as part of Marbert Rocel, who enjoyed a long and fruitful partnership with the mighty Compost label; or now focusing on solo projects and his esteemed Riotvan label, all from his base in one of Germany's most vibrant cities, Leipzig. With new tune ‘Turn Up the Juice' already hailed as an “anthem” by Hot Since 82, the juice gets turned up a few notches more with this bodyslammer of a remix. Our man Panthera remains true to the spirit of Steve's original but goes darker with a late 90s / early 00s vibe with whip cracker percussion, dirty synths, and the opulent vocal hook all aiding and abetting this unabashed act of grand dancefloor larceny. Across 90 minutes in this week's mix, Loveless draws on all of that experience to lay down a silky smooth trip that touches on deep techno and lush electronic minimalism before delving into more menacing atmospheres, jacked-up house and feel-good sunrise sounds.

Effervescent club cuts from one of Southeast Asia's rising DJ stars. In Indonesia, the term santai (relaxed) is more than just an adjective—it's a lifestyle, one endearingly embodied by DITA. The Bandung-born, Bali-rooted DJ's breezy attitude to life is reflected in dreamy, blissful euphoria. DITA's RA Podcast is a window into both her disposition and sound, blending wiggly breakbeat into tweaking acid, Detroit house into Spanish electro, Balearic to '90s house and some grittier club fare, too. Her sets are rooted in a feel-good philosophy that allows her to freely play with energy and mood. Don't just take our word for it: DJ Harvey is a major fan and hand-picked DITA to be a resident at his new club Klymax, nestled within the world-renowned Potato Head Bali, where DITA is also Head of Music. With gigs at everywhere from Panorama Bar (the first Indonesian woman to play) to Rainbow Disco Club and Dekmantel under her belt, the world is now taking notice of DITA's killer groove. Maximalist house from the sibling duo at the forefront of Berlin's new wave. Berlin is built on dance music. But of the many DJs who live, work and play there, few represent the evolution in the city's club culture like Tania and Dominik Humeres-Correa, AKA S-candalo. If the city was once governed by the tyranny of minimal, the post-pandemic era has cemented its reputation as the spot for "more-is-more" club soundtracks. It's still house and techno, but the chords are big, the drums are big and the basslines are even bigger. Nowadays, S-candalo are firm favourites at hotspots across the German capital, from Panorama Bar to Multisex and Radiant Love (not forgetting La Noche, their own burgeoning party). The duo find rich inspiration in '90s-era Latin house, a sound that takes New York house and incorporates rolling percussion from Latin genres such as samba, popularised on labels like Cutting Records and Strictly Rhythm (there's not one but two records from the latter in this mix). RA.956 fittingly lands at the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month in the US (more on that to come) and it's a resolutely fun affair. The duo's RA Podcast has got drive, sultry vocals and enough bounce to make you want to keep dancing way beyond the 90-minutes, marrying percussion-heavy house and ballroom with trance-inflected Eurodance from the '90s and early 2000s. (Oh, and a Shakira moment.) Genres aside, the duo's musical raison d'etre is pleasure. Perhaps the real scandal here is how it took us so long to get them on the series. @s-candalo @thc_dj @dhc_bln Read more at ra.co/podcast/956

L.Ivory, a pillar of Dublin's queer scene and founder of NSFW, steps up to the 244th Local Selection Mix. Ivory's 90s-inspired set includes Baleric-brushed grooves, UK rave, smokey Panorama Bar style cuts and more for an hour of dancefloor pleasure. Best known for his party NSFW, the Dublin native established the forward-thinking queer party series in January 2022 to promote marginalised LQBTQ+ talent in his hometown. It's hard to believe the party has been going on for two and a half years, leaving its mark on the Dublin landscape and gaining a cult following thanks to its utopian vibe, free of judgement and promoting pure freedom of expression. L. Ivory‘s work in Dublin club culture extends beyond NSFW; he is also promoting shows under a new brand, SissHut, in Yamamori Tengu. His NSFW radio show on Dublin Digital Radio, a community-driven station, has provided a platform for emerging talent while also allowing the NSFW boss to showcase his diverse musical tastes. The Dublin-based artist has also been making his mark across Ireland's festival circuit, frequently appearing across some of the Isle's most coveted stages at Electric Picnic, All Together Now, Otherside and Life Festival. He has also shared the booth with various esteemed artists including Traumer, Dungeon Meat, Spray, IN2STELLAR, Doudou Md, and many more. Ivory's contribution to the Local Selection Mix series is a smooth ride through his refined mix of dancefloor-ready tracks, delicately merging contrasting tools into a smooth-sailing adventure that is as surprising as it is coherent. A good DJ mix can be often defined by depth, and L.Ivory's mix is nothing short of tunnelling deeper and deeper as it advances from hypnotising prog rollers to trance-kissed anthems, reducing acid lines, vintage Dublin rave classics, and more. This is a true DJ at work; each mix is well-thought-out but not overly premeditated, allowing for plenty of twists and turns. Podcast Overview: The conversation with Dusky covers a wide range of topics, including personal life, teamwork, the evolution of their sound, changes in the music industry, and the impact of social media and marketing. The discussion delves into the challenges and changes in the music scene, from club culture to festivals, and the shift in focus from DJing to streaming and social media marketing. The conversation covers a wide range of topics, including the evolution of DJ culture, the process of album writing, the influence of major record labels, the impact of AUS record label, and the significance of having one's own record label. It also delves into the changing dynamics of the music industry, the role of A&R, and the challenges and opportunities for artists in the current music landscape.Who are Dusky: Dusky are London production duo Nick Harriman and Alfie Granger-Howell. The duo have asserted themselves as leaders of the UK underground. BBC Essential Mix of The Year contenders, DJ Mag cover stars, headliners everywhere from Berlin's Panorama Bar to London's Fabric, Dusky's story so far is one of constant forward motion and a uniquely universal appeal. The duo's breakthrough track was undoubtedly 2012's iTunes Dance Single Of The Year 'Flo Jam'. Signed by the label that broke Maya Jane Coles (Dogmatik), its deep grooves were hammered by everyone from Loefah, Joy Orbison and Boddika to Disclosure, Jamie Jones and Sasha, with even Calvin Harris getting in on the act. Since those formative releases marked them out as talents destined for the top, Dusky have pushed their sound forward every step of the way. There have been Italo bassline meets Belgian rave vibes on Running Back, rugged warehouse techno excursions on Loefah's School and classy melodic grooves on Anjunadeep. But, it was ‘Careless' on Aus that cemented their place in the scene's hall of fame. Over 14 million streams, definitive UK house banger of its era and soundtrack to countless crack-ons ever since. In 2017, the duo launched their 17 Steps label, taking control of this unique identity and giving it the unrestricted platform it deserves. JOY, their debut album on the imprint, amassed over 6 million streams with ‘Eros', the most streamed track on the LP, paving way for their new garage project Pressure. Most underground movements in the arts can be boiled down to one key ingredient: friends doing dope shit together. Childhood BFFs Luca Medici and Delbert Perez have been doing just that with INVT (that's "innovate"), a multidisciplinary art project that spans club music and streetwear. Before exploding onto the international stage and playing to massive crowds in Ibiza and Tulum, the Miami natives built a solid community at home through electrifying DJ sets, releases and fashion. They might be globe-trotting artists now, going back-to-back with artists like Skream and playing Panorama Bar, but their raw DIY spirit stays strong. Their tunes and live hardware shows fuse jungle, techno, East Coast club and dubstep—and lately, tech house and tribal house—with bass-heavy Latin genres like cumbia and guaracha. A reflection of Miami's diverse demographics, their genre cross-pollinations bring together skaters, dancers, artists and various subcultures. Their clothing lines are equally cross-cultural: repurposed vintage items made from screen printing and acid washing, using photos and designs that represent their home city's vibrant street culture. True to their grassroots ethos, everything's done in-house, from mixing and mastering tracks to embroidery. The next-gen duo's ultra-rhythmic productions, characterised by deep, swinging drums and trippy textures, is delivered to the world at a rapid-fire pace, testament to Medici and Perez's seemingly insatiable hunger. Their explosive career has helped bring fresh shine to Miami talents who feature heavily in their sets, including this RA Podcast. Featuring DJ Babatr, Coffintexts and plenty of their own unreleased heaters, INVT's mix represents their friendships, community and Miami's thrilling melting pot of dance music that they're still a core part of even as they move across the globe. @invt305 Read more at https://ra.co/podcast/930

Of the original crop of Detroit DJs, @delano_smith is one of the few still dedicated to the craft. At a time described as the Wild West by some, when party culture was taking its first tentative steps, Delano honed his skills under the guidance of the late, great Ken Collier. With initial sets fusing soul, disco and early electronic sounds, Delano planted seeds in the minds of Detroit's subsequent generations. Those dancing to his sets in the late 70s and early 80s would later become ambassadors of a scene with worldwide appeal. Now, Delano stands shoulder to shoulder with the figureheads he once educated, writing a brand new chapter for house and techno. Following a period out of the game, Delano returned with a new focus, forming the DJ collective BeatDownSounds with long-time peers Norm Talley and @mikeagentx. The trio offered a unique, slowed down and raw take on house, a sound picked up by London/Tokyo label, @third-ear-recordings, and presented on the double-length compilation ‘Detroit BeatDown Vol.1', the success of which enabled Delano and his partners to represent the Motor City on an international level. In 2002 his own Mixmode imprint. In 2009 Delano formed a pivotal relationship with the Berlin-based @sushitech, following a chance meeting with label head @yossi Amoyal, the setting Panorama Bar, a club that would later help define Delano's musical direction. After a string of successful Sushitech EPs, Delano dropped ‘Odyssey' onto the scene's collective consciousness, an album spawning enduring dancefloor favourites. Two years later his sophomore long player arrived, loaded with dark and dubby material ‘Twilight' was a curve ball to follow the hysteria that greeted his debut. 2017 saw Delano add yet another Sushitech LP to his discography, entitled ‘Detroit Lost Tapes' it offered archived material, dug out and recontextualised with a worldwide tour following in support. TECH CLUBBERS PODCAST W/ ALESSANDRO ADRIANI Alessandro Adriani is a lot of things – producer, DJ, live performer and label owner of Mannequin Records – but above all he is a tireless music researcher. The Berlin-based Italian goes further than your average “crate digger” in pursuit of information about sounds, styles, artists and record labels, devoting countless hours to unearthing the untold stories behind the music he loves, regardless of when it was made. Adriani's obsession has naturally shaped his other musical endeavors, not least Mannequin Records, the label he established over than a decade ago, voted label of the month by Resident Advisor in 2017. Over the years, the imprint has won praise from buyers and critics alike for its open-minded blend of on-point reissues, archival collections and fresh productions. The intriguing, leftfield mixture of material on offer – think techno, electro, cold wave, industrial, EBM, minimal synth, and more – is naturally a reflection of Adriani's wide-ranging and off-kilter tastes ( as you'd discover if you had a quick flick through his vast and growing record collection ). Adriani is distinctively drawn towards the dark and obscure, and you can hear this approach amongst the long, drawn-out mixes of his similarly eclectic DJ sets. Alessandro has contributed outstanding mixes for Resident Advisor, FACT, Crack Magazine, Bleep, Cxema and Dekmantel. On the festival circuit he's made appearances at Berghain, Tresor, Atonal, Boiler Room, Dekmantel, ADE, Dimensions, Neopop, Positive Education, Signal and more, together with his bi-monthly dates at Berghain and Panorama Bar, a residency he's held from 2016 to 2020. As a producer, Adriani's output naturally draws on these inspirations, but also reflects his obsession with electronic hardware. Under his own name Adriani has built a reputation for delivering heavy, angular and forthright club cuts for such celebrated labels as L.I.E.S. Records, Stroboscopic Artefacts, Jealous God, Pinkman and - of course - Mannequin Records. From the Chi-town hi-nrg of Matthew E, through to the Balearic psychedelia of Quiet Village, the spectrum is covered. So who better to mark our 400th (!) edition of the guest mix series, under the guise of his most recognised alias, Radio Slave. "It's been a real pleasure recording this mix. Putting together just over 60 minutes of underground gems, old and new including some of my all-time favourites like Boris Duglosh's remix of Syncbeat's 'Music'. And I was trying to capture the vibe of my recent closing at the Panorama Bar in Berlin. 7am Monday morning vibes where anything goes! This was all done on my laptop, using an Akai APC40 controller and mixed in Ableton, which isn't so different to using CDJ's and after I made my selection, I recorded the entire mix live with very little editing. I should also mention I mixed this on a little island called Jerolim which is in front of Hvar in Croatia. Enjoy!"

You might describe Cormac as a late bloomer. Or he might describe himself that way. Though he's been in the dance music game for a long time—a regular at Trash and Nag Nag Nag, and a resident and booker at the old Sunday WetYourSelf! parties at fabric—it's only more recently that he's come into a sound that he can call his own, something that connects more clearly with who he is. (These days, you're more likely to find him closing Panorama Bar.) That sound is rooted in the queer history so important to him. You could call his RA Podcast hi-NRG, to be general. It's that vibrant, pounding, melodic and synthetic sound that came out of the post-disco early '80s, combining the flair of disco with the strut of Italo. There's new and old here, because Cormac is a champion of evolving iterations of the genre. Over this two and a half hours, you'll hear Patrick Cowley and Madonna, but also a whole lot of other, less obvious stuff too. We could go on, but Cormac explains himself pretty eloquently in the interview below. Two hot tips: watch out for his label, Polari Records, and his upcoming Queerly Beloved podcast series, where he talks to queer artists about their relationships with music. @cormac Read more at https://ra.co/podcast/885

Born and raised in New York but now transplanted to Berlin, @gabriellekwarteng has quickly become a Panorama Bar regular known for her eclectic radio shows. The move to Europe widened the scope of her DJ sets which tend to be high energy and punchy with plenty of techno, while on the airwaves she is likely to serve up a mix of boogie, Afro-disco, and neo-soul. That broad approach no doubt stems from growing up in the musical melting pot that is the Bronx, but also from childhood summers - and later a year studying abroad - in London. Add in a desire to champion the classic Black American genres and you have the foundations of the Kwarteng sound. All this is reflected in this week's mix which traverses global genres with effortless enthusiasm. Hefty bass cuts and weighty rhythms build into acid-tinged workouts, sounds of the diaspora spread across the course of 70 minutes and energy levels drop even when the mood changes. It's a great snapshot of a DJ at ease with worldly sounds and the ability to thread them all together into a communal dance floor experience.

With 40 tracks in less than an hour, the New Delhi selector's mixing moves quickly just like her trajectory as an artist. Starting as a member of the femme collective Coven Code and a staple figure of boxout.fm, Lush Lata has built her work over an embrace for Bollywood and the grooves most Indian kids grow up around while connecting it to her deep love for hip-hop and bass. Next to all this, Moscoman continues to focus on building his Disco Halal label and brand into a real family. It is a place where artists like Simple Symmetry, Red Axes, Trikk and Auntie Flo have all freely expressed themselves. Like Moscoman's own approach to music, it is an unrestricted label that never fails to subvert and surprise.

This month's guest is German-born Turkish artist @SedefAdasi, a DJ and burgeoning producer based in the city of Augsburg, Germany. Sedef is perhaps best known for @HAMAMNights, her self-made event series which sees her booking not only local favourites but big name artists at City Club, one of her hometown's handful of electronic music clubs. Despite a jam-packed tour schedule and a new residency at Panorama Bar, Sedef isn't interested in moving to a music capital, preferring to work with friends to create all-inclusive events and workshops that foster the growth of her community. In this episode, Sedef and I discuss the story of HAMAM Nights, small city living, and its impact on her creativity as a DJ and producer. ++ Music: "Gel Gidelim" - Sedef Adasi (2021) "Turbo Ride" - Sedef Adasi (2021) "An Anonymous Force" - Sedef Adasi (2021)

Imagine growing up near Berlin, getting into dance music, going to Berghain for the first time and getting your mind blown by techno. Then, ten years later, you become a resident DJ at the fabled club. Not many people—any people?—can claim this story, but for Fadi Mohem, what would be so many DJs' dreams became a reality. After getting his 2017 debut 12-inch Reckless in the hands of all the right people in Berlin, Mohem established a bold, bouncy techno sound with releases on Modeselektor's Seilscheibenpfeiler, Ben Klock's Klockworks and FJAAK's SPANDAU20, pretty much the cream of the crop of modern techno. Now, this year, he's becoming one of Berghain's newest residents, alongside other exciting names like Sedef Adasï and Naty Seres (and Lakuti upstairs at Panorama Bar). As heard on his recent collaborative with Ben Klock, Mohem has modern techno down to a science, thanks to a combination of reverence for the old-school and clever rhythmic touches, like the irresistible snare pattern on "Prefix." His RA Podcast sounds like what you might expect from a new generation of Berghain resident: aerodynamic, heavy and, honestly a little midtempo compared to a lot of other young techno DJs. It's the sound the club has made world-famous, with cuts from Reeko, Heiko Laux and Truncate, plus some special moments from aya, DJ Deeon and Petar Dundov. It takes a certain kind of DJ to get to this hallowed place, and Fadi Mohem deserves it. @fadimohem Read more: https://ra.co/podcast/842

Not A Diving Podcast with Scuba

House music all night long is a fine adage for the feckless youth of no responsibility, but try delivering the aforementioned while breastfeeding a newborn and facing the prospect of doing the same thing tomorrow in a different country. Cassy has unquestionably done the 'DJ thing'. Formerly resident of https://circolocoibiza.com/ (Circoloco) and graduate of the inaugural https://berghain.de (Panorama Bar) class, she's played all the shows anyone serious about House music ever wanted to. We talk about all of that stuff, and also dig into some of the less glam aspects of DJing, like the limitations of being part of a highly-insular community like the dance scene, the increasing pressures to conform to the norms of that community, and the deficit of authentic voices in the scene. We also discuss making music, the influences of Prince and most notably James Brown, and address the crucial question of whether DJing is a form of art. Cassy is a true original, and you will enjoy this conversation! On https://hotflush.bandcamp.com (Hotflush) this week I drop a collaboration with Bakongo, aka former podcast guest Roska.
