We've been highlighting the fact that The New York Times, the largest paper in the country, has finally hired a gun-beat reporter. So, this week, we invited him on the show to talk about his approach and goals. Reporter Thomas Gibbons-Neff has started consistently doing gun stories for The Grey Lady, as The Times has long been known. It's not his first assignment. I also wouldn't call it his most challenging since he went from active-duty service in Afghanistan to covering it and, later, the war in Ukraine. Still, as Gibbons-Neff readily admits, covering guns in America for a paper like The Times is not without its own challenges. One of the things he has to navigate in order to find sources is The Times' reputation, especially given its aggressive editorial stance in favor of new gun restrictions and bans. But he agreed his background and continual focus on firearms should help him produce better stories than many in the gun world might expect. And he said he's going to work to earn the gun-owning community's trust that he'll be fair, mainly by demonstrating it in the pieces he publishes. "I always like starting with something out of context..."  He of WH Lung greatness and now a solo live artist & DJ delivers a belter of a mix. Having grown up in Manchester's DIY band scene, Tom Sharkett came late to these things called dancing clubs and all that came with it, discovering electronic music through synthesizers while recording with his most excellent band W. H. Lung. His journey from guitar music to the dancefloor mirrors his present-day musical output; a collision of post-punk abrasiveness and the electronic that feels equally at home in sweaty basements and proper nightclubs. Now based back in Todmorden, Tom has carved out his own niche releasing on Optimo Music and System Olympia's Okay Nature label... and it's a bloody brilliant niche!  His production approach remains coloured by those early days of bedroom experimentation with friends, citing the peerless Andrew Weatherall's fearlessly exploratory spirit as a key inspiration. It's interesting how he keeps coming around and around again, doesn't it? "His approach reminds me of the excited feeling I had trying to record things in my bedroom with my friends with anything we had at our disposal and just experimenting with the weird and wonderful results," When it comes to disc jockeying, Tom brings that same experimental energy. This mix was recorded in his panoramic valley-view studio in Todmorden, captures that ethos perfectly, opening with Spacemen 3 before wandering through territory that spans from Tirzah-esque experimentalism to classic New Beat. He came out to Jackson after graduating from St. Mary's College in Moraga California in June 1992. Tim came to ski for one season and never went back to California. He's a 2nd-grade teacher at Colter Elementary in town. He's also a part-time ski instructor at the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. Tim has 2 daughters ages 15 and 17, who really seem to think they are better skiers than him which he begs to differ because he can carve on skis and all they do is ski straight down the mountain and never turn. Now for the not-so-fun stuff, Tim was diagnosed with AFib about 5 years ago when he was on the operating table for a hernia. One of the nurses noticed he was in AFib when she looked at the heart monitor. That was the beginning of his journey that ended up in having open heart surgery on August 25th, 2023 down at the University of Utah Hospital in Salt Lake. Tim was in AFib 24 hours a day for months. He went through his stress test in AFib, he had 3 cardioversions in November 2022 and an ablation down in Salt Lake in December 2022. That obviously didn't work and he was referred to another electrophysiologist down in Salt Lake. He had his maize procedure down in Salt Lake on August 25th of 2023. This surgery with a change in his diet changed his life forever. Publicaron su primer álbum “oficial” en 1988, con un sonido más SynthPop, consiguiendo gran éxito en todo el mundo y del cual lanzaron 4 singles, entre ellos “Walking Away”. Al día de hoy siguen en activo. Erasure, duo británico formado por Vince Clark (Depeche Mode, Yazoo) y el vocalista Andy Bell en 1985. En abril de 1988 publican su icónico álbum (y para muchos el mejor hasta la fecha) “The Innocents”. Uno de sus sencillos “A Little Respect” se convirtió en un himno del SynthPop de la década. Book of Love, grupo americano de SynthPop formado en 1983 publicando su primera producción en 1986. En 1988 lanzan su segundo álbum del cual sale como single “Pretty Boys & Pretty Girls” logrando sonar en radios de todo el mundo. En 1993 el grupo se disuelve. Peter Schilling, cantante alemán famoso por la canción “Major Tom (Coming Home)” publicada en 1983. Pero no fue hasta 1989 que no repitió el éxito gracias a “The Different Story (World Of Lust And Crime)” colaboración con Michael Cretu, creador del grupo Enigma. El sencillo no fue un gran éxito en los US pero si en el resto del mundo. Cetu Javu, grupo alemán formado en 1984. Tenían la particularidad que varias canciones eran en castellano ya que su cantante (Javier Revilla-Díez) era hijo de españoles, aunque él ha nacido en Hannover. Debido a esto fue un grupo de gran popularidad en Latinoamérica y España, no así en el resto del mundo. Uno de sus mayores éxitos “Have in Mind” fue lanzado en 1988. Los también alemanes Camouflage lograron la notoriedad con su primer sencillo “The Great Commandment” publicado en 1987. Publicaron varios singles más de moderado éxito mundial pero nunca han podido repetir el suceso del primero. Hasta nuestros días sigue siendo muy evidente la gran influencia que ejerce Depeche Mode sobre ellos. Kon Kan, el proyecto del canadiense Barry Harris, publica el single “I Beg Your Pardon (I Never Promised You a Rose Garden)” en 1988. Debido al gran éxito obtenido la discográfica convence a Barry a lanzar un álbum integro, el cual sale al mercado un año después. Del mismo salen varios singles pero cada vez con menos repercusión. Publica un par de discos más y disuelve el proyecto para formar junto al DJ Carl Cox el dúo Thunderpuss para dedicarse a la remezcla de canciones de artistas como Madonna, Christina Aguilera, Whitney Houston, etc. Pet Shop Boys, duo de SynthPop influenciados por el Hi-NRG publican 2 discos de gran éxito y en 1988 lanzan el icónico “Introspective”. Disco concebido para las pistas de baile, 6 canciones en versiones extendidas con bases y sintetizadores propios de House. El segundo sencillo fue “Left to My Own Devices” publicado en noviembre de 1988. Hoy en día la mayoría de las canciones del álbum son parte fundamental en cualquier playlist del dúo. New Order, luego de varios discos deciden viajar a Ibiza para grabar lo que sería su siguiente producción “Technique”, muy influenciado por los sonidos que sonaban en la isla en aquel momento (House, Balearic, New Beat). El primer single fue “Round & Round” lanzado en marzo de 1989, a pesar de solo tener un éxito moderado, con los años se ha convertido en un clásico del género y del grupo. Real Life, originales de Australia este grupo de SynthPop solo lograron sonar en todas las radios del mundo con la canción “Send me an Angel”. En plena explosión del movimiento Punk en el Reino Unido y su filosofía del “Do it yourself” un grupo de chicos procedentes de distintas partes del país comenzaban a jugar con sintetizadores, influenciados por Kraftwerk, Bowie, Brian Eno y Donna Summer. Así es como surge el SynthPop gracias a gente como The Human League, O.M.D., Tubeway Army y varios más. El Trip-Hop surgió en Bristol a comienzos de década como una respuesta británica al Hip-Hop que llegaba de Estados Unidos, combinando elementos (y samplers) del Jazz, Reggae, Dub, Soul, Hip Hop. Por otra parte desde Ibiza llegaba el Balearic Beat, un género ecléctico que mamaba tanto de las guitaras flamencas como de sonidos electrónicos procedentes del New Beat, House, Techno y el ambient de Brian Eno. En 1990 The KLF crean, sin querer, el concepto del Chillout, publicando el disco homonimo. Una ida de olla donde combinan samplers de animales, con slide guitar, (nuevamente) Brian Eno y todo tipo de sustancias. De todo este panorama, durante la década surgieron cientos de grupos, álbumes y canciones inspirados en estos géneros electrónicos. Demostrando que las maquinas no solo se usaban para bailar sin parar, sino que había toda una movida de música para escuchar relajado en el sofá o en el after/chillout de turno. Se necesitaba otra música para “bajar” luego de la Rave. Así nos encontramos con grupos como Olive, Sneaker Pimps, The Blue Boy, Nightmares on Wax, Bran Van 3000, Morcheeba, que cogían el Trip-Hop para hacerlo propio, combinándolo con Hip-Hop, Pop o incluso Drum ‘n Bass. Tenemos el caso de Moloko, que lo combinaba con el House y la electrónica europea. Massive Attack, precursores del Trip Hop, lanzando en 1991 el primer disco de este género. Nellee Hooper, colaborador de Massive Attack, en sus comienzos era llamado para realizar remezclas de gente como Simply Red o producir el álbum debut de Bjork, un disco fundamental para entender la música de los 90s. Alpha, duo de Trip-Hop, procedentes de Bristol en 1996. The Orb y The Grid surgen de la escena de las Raves ilegales de Londres, finales de los 80s y comienzos de los 90s. Creando sonidos experimentales más relajados, Chillout, Ambient House, Downtempo. White Town proceden de la escena Indie, influidos por los sonidos electrónicos que se producían en aquel momento, lanzaron un “One-Hit” single en 1997 llamado “Your Woman”. No lograron repetir el éxito. El dúo Leftfield revolucionaron la escena electrónica con su disco debut “Leftism” en 1995, combinando el Hip Hop con el House, el Ambient, el Dub, el Techno. Auténticos temazos, como el que suena en este podcast o la colaboración con John Lydon “Open Up”. Los franceses AIR publicaron su álbum debut en 1998 combinando sonidos de sintetizadores de los 70s de gente como Vangelis o Jean-Michael Jarre, Ye-Ye Frances, Jazz, Ambient, etc. Creando un álbum “de música de ascensor 2.0” elogiado por toda la prensa mundial.
