Paintings by world-famous Moomins creator Tove Jansson on show in Finland

Paintings by the world-famous Moomins creator Tove Jansson are on show in Finland. The exhibition at the Helsinki Art Museum marks the 80th anniversary of the publication of Jansson's book The Moomins and the Great Flood, which introduced the creatures to the world. Prior to the success of the Moomins, Jansson first made a name for herself as a talented artist who painted on commission in public spaces during the 1940s and 1950s. The exhibition features her public murals, including sketches that were found in her studio and have never before been shown to the public. “This exhibition at HAM—Helsinki Art Museum—is special because it's the first time we can see the wholeness of Tove Jansson's all public artworks that she has ever made,” says Heli Harni, curator of the exhibition. Five original murals and several competition paintings, as well as photographic reproductions of works that couldn't be moved to the museum, are displayed at the exhibition called Paradise. Harni hopes the exhibition will show visitors Jansson's creative versatility. “It's a bit different than her storytelling in her books. And as we know, Moomin books and the story of Moomins going and building their own Paradise in the Moomin Valley,” she says. The exhibition also features a display of early edition Moomin books. “It is the jubilee year of the first Moomin book, as we know The Moomins and the Great Flood. And this theme is kind of connected to also this exhibition. And we have also here animation from the first book,” says Harni. While an exhibition dedicated to Tove Jansson must of course refer to the Moomins, the focus is centered on her public works for factory walls, hospitals and nurseries. Jansson's works, some with hidden Moomins, will be on display in Helsinki until April 2025 before some of the creations depart for Japan on a two-year tour. This is the 8th bonus episode of The Podgoblin's Hat, with Nina and Dave. You can find it on it's own feed wherever you get your podcasts. Our guest Ali Baker is a researcher in children's literature with a particular interest in children's voice and children's rights, so it's no surprise she chose to come on and talk to us about The Invisible Child! Ali makes a strong case for Bjork as a Spirit of Little My and reminisces about finding the Moomins in her local library as a kid. We situate the Moomins as a type of fantasy, and Ali recommend's Dr Farah Mendlesohn's Rhetorics of Fantasy. We talk about the mixed up class elements of the Moomin family, and go on a long tangent about femme-shaming (#JusticeForTheSnorkMaiden), with reference to Tamora Pierce's Protector of the Small quartet. Ali's article about the the sensitivity edit's to Roald Dahl's work is here. Her Spirit of the Moomin's is Bjork's album Vespertine, and her Spirit of the Podgoblin's Hat is her podcast Fantasy Book Swap.

This is the 23rd episode of The Podgoblin's Hat, with Nina and Dave. You can find it on it's own feed wherever you get your podcasts. And just like that, it's the end of the season! We're going out on a story that actually shows us what happens when someone has a problem and wonders "What would Snufkin do?" Sniff is inconsolable over the loss of his favourite toy, a small dog called Cedric, with bejewelled eyes (?!). Even Moominmamma can't help him, so he wanders down to Snufkin's camp and gets told a story. It's a very classic story-shape about belongings not making you happy, but you know what we say? There's nothing wrong with playing the hits well! This story is a real two-hander between Snufkin and Sniff. It really wouldn't be the same without Sniff's many, pertinent, exasperating interruptions. We have a go at filling some plot holes, like: when did Sniff get back from wherever it was he went? Who gave him the toy dog, and why did this put jewels in its eyes? Next season we'll be reading the Moomin comics, so dig out your copies if you want to read along! Our Spirits of the Moomins this week are The Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander and Tales of Uncle Remus: The Adventures of Brer Rabbit by Julius Lester. Dave has sneaked three (three!) Spirits of the Podgoblin's hat in this season finale to keep you going until we get back: Cane and Rinse, Girl Mode and Rainbow Road.

This is the twelth episode of The Podgoblin's Hat, with Nina and Dave. You can find it on it's own feed wherever you get your podcasts. To wrap up season two we are bringing you the last two picture books set in the Moomin universe written by Tove Jansson. Both of these books are a bit difficult and inaccessible! They're very interesting to Moomin fans in that they show the later stages of Tove's journey with her little trolls, and how she felt about them towards the end of her life. The Dangerous Journey is a portal fantasy that sees human girl Susanna enter the Moomin world and travel through a series of gorgeously bleak watercolor landscapes. The Moomins are barely in this, and when they do appear, it's time for Susanna to go. We talk about the many influences on the art and writing of Jansson and read the book as a kind of retrospective of her life. Villain in the Moominhouse has no official translation into English and is kind of hard to find! You can read a fan translation by Teresa Ronayne here: https://kupdf.net/download/the-unwanted-guest-final-version-03-09-small_58d46345dc0d60893ec34667_pdf This is a more typical story shape for the Moomins, except it's all set inside the Moominhouse. Little My is awakened by a horrible smell - eventually the whole house is roused to search out the pungent intruder. Again, we have characters from all different Moomin books and comics humbled together, in a very much larger than canon house. This book is a photo picture book: each illustration was staged inside a large Moomin dolls house that Tove worked on in collaboration with her friends. It's more of a sculpture than a book? Our Spirits of the Moomins this week are The Boy Who Climbed Into the Moon by David Almond (honourable mention to How to Stay Sober When You'd Rather Be Dead which you can borrow from overdrive here: https://clevnet.overdrive.com/clevnet-ADVANTAGEKEY/content/media/1475832), Where the Wild Things Are (the movie). This is the eleventh episode of The Podgoblin's Hat, with Nina and Dave. You can find it on it's own feed wherever you get your podcasts. We're breaking from our normal format for these next two episodes to bring you Tove Jansson's picture books. The Book about Moomin, Mymble and Little My is really ahead of its time in terms of interactivity and the use of holes cut out of the pages. It's a simple enough journey story, and a vehicle for some really gorgeous art. We compare the translation from the 1960s with the more modern text in our newer editions. There's very creative versification and some brand new Hattifattener lore! And if it's true to say that that first book showcases Tove's love of colour, that's even more true of Who Will Comfort Toffle?. Toffle is a small grey creature living in a big colourful world. He always feels on the outside of everything. Pointillism abounds in the black and white pictures of Toffle's fearful little world. Snufkin has a cameo and he's swapped his mouth organ for a silver flute - what is up with that? Ultimately it's a story about the wisdom and strength that love brings. For obvious reasons, there are a lot more pictures to share than usual this week, so we recommend you find us on twitter and instagram to see all that stuff. Our Spirits of the Moomins this week are the game Gris and Press Here by Herve Tullet. Our Spirit of the Podgoblin's Hat is She-Ra: Progressive of Power.

It's now time for the fifth and final episode of the podcast series about the Moomin phenomenon. And it's finally time to focus on the creator: Tove Jansson. In this series, we've been discussing the Moomin phenomenon. Fans have told us how the Moomin world has absorbed them to the extent that they can even imagine tattooing the characters onto their bodies. We've also examined if there is such a thing as Moomin philosophy, and we've met many people who have been inspired by both Moomin ethics and aesthetics. We've also inundated ourselves with Moomin paraphernalia and asked ourselves if Moomin has become too commercial. We've been to Helsinki, the Finnish archipelago, London, north and south of Sweden and last but not least, Japan! And wherever we've traveled, we've found a world filled with Moomins. But this episode is going to hone in on something else. We're taking a look at the creator of the Moomins, Tove Jansson. Even if there have been prolific amounts of extensive academic text about her person, Tove never wanted to be a particularly public figure. She was at her happiest ensconced on her little island in the archipelago and in her tucked away studio in Helsinki during the colder months together with her life partner and love, Tuulikki Pietilä. Who was Tove Jansson, and what is her legacy? One of the places we will visit is her famous and mythical studio in Helsinki. In this episode we'll meet Sophia Jansson - the niece of Tove Jansson, publishers Mark Ellingham and Natania Jansz and actors and singers Emma Klingenberg and Kim Gustavsson among others.

This is the fourth episode of the podcast about the Moomin phenomenon, and this time we'll be looking at the commercialisation of Moomin. Why is there so much Moomin STUFF in the world? Is it simply because it's an easy way to feel closer to the world of Moomin? Do you, dear listener, have any Moomin merchandise or collectables in your home? Perhaps a fridge magnet? Or a plush toy? Have you tasted the Fillyjonk fizzy soft drink? Or, as we discussed in the last episode, Moomin whiskey? A Moomin mug was sold for 25 thousand pounds on auction – how is that even possible? In this episode, we are going to visit a real treasure chamber full of Moomin rarities and Tove Jansson's illustrations. And we try to answer the following question: How do you actually preserve the artistic value of a commercial brand while maintaining Tove Jansson's artistry and values? In this episode we talk to Roleff Kråkström, Managing Director at Moomin Characters and professor Boel Westin among others.

Now is the time to hear people who have been deeply influenced by the Moomins, from London, through Helsinki all the way to Tokyo. What does a theater director, an author of children's books and a philosopher have in common? Well, they might just all be drawing their inspiration from Moominvalley. In fact, imagine all the people around the world influenced by the gentle Moomins, the hysterically dutiful Fillyjonk, the orderly Hemulens, or the free-spirited Snufkin. Imagine the righteous anger of Little My encouraging one person to take up a worthwhile cause, and pushing another to finally tell the stories they always wanted to tell. This is the third installment of the podcast about the Moomin phenomenon. In the past, we have looked at the fans of the Moomins, as well as the philosophy of the Moomins. But can an entire hospital be inspired by Moomin values and philosophy? Apparently there is such a place, the children's hospital in Helsinki, which has incorporated Moomin values in every step taking care of the patients. We will also visit a fruit garden full of instruments, a studio where the tunes of Moominvalley emerge. In this episode we'll meet the musician Lauri Porra and author Philip Ardagh and desingers Rika Kawato and Harriet Wine among others.

In this episode, we'll be taking a deep dive into the true meaning of the thing they call "Moomin Philosophy" and try to figure out what the Moomins are all about between the lines. As we delve into Moomin philosophy in this episode, we'll be speaking with academics and philosophers such as Sanna Tirkkonen and Björn Sundmark about their studies of the deeper aspects of the Moomins. Many people around the world have different Moomin characters as role models, despite (or maybe because of) the flaws and quirks that both children and adults can identify with. What is it about the Moomins that appeals to so many on so many levels?

One of the best things about podcasting apart from the fun of the actual recording, the really cool people we've been able to meet as a result of doing this, the chance we've had to indulge our passions, the unity and commitment it takes from 5 different people to spaff this nonsense out into the ether each week and the dedication to refinement of a craft even one as insignificant as this is the fact that you can in some small way reduce your self-worth to a number if you like, the number of downloads that you've had. And though it's not important, it is a little bit important so here's hoping that this week's super niche Moomin based content will have us shooting up the charts. We start things off this week by discussing the Top 5 Creatures and there were plenty to choose from. TOVE (2020) is a biography of painter, writer, illustrator and The Moomins creator Tove Jansson, set in three different time periods of the Finnish artists life. Born into a family of artists in Helsinki, her mother was an illustrator and her father, Viktor, a renowned sculptor so it was perhaps inevitable that she would find herself drawn into the family passion though Viktor's cruel dismissiveness of her Moomins drawings fuels her fear of failure. When she meets wealthy socialite and director Vivica Bandler it sparks a love affair spanning several years as her creative endeavours and love life become intertwined. This is probably not a stop everything, you must watch this now type recommendation from us but as the true story of the sexual liberation of a free-spirited woman who threw off the shackles of her domineering father to become an international sensation whilst also exploring the subtle heartbreak of being in love with a partner who doesn't feel precisely the same way, there is plenty to enjoy. Strong performances from Alma Pöysti, Shanti Roney and Krista Kosonen anchor this well-made, thoughtful and at times very beautiful movie. Knowing that THE MOOMINS was written against the backdrop of the author's exploration of her sexual and romantic identity while defying her openly chauvinistic father makes it all the harder for me to talk about the sheer freaky what-the-fudginess of the episode we watched, "The Moomin Valley in Spring". The first episode of the 1990 cartoon series sees the gentle watercolour vista of Moominvalley (one word I'm reliably informed despite what it says in the title of the episode right there above) as the scene of a horrifying Twilight Zone style existential nightmare where Moomin is transformed into something like the Sumatran rat monkey from Peter Jackson's BRAINDEAD. Also, the cast of characters reads like a list of urban dictionary entries: I smashed her right in the Snufkin, last week Bruce tugged my Snork Maiden on a pedalo and I've never been able to walk the same way again, do you fancy a Mymble's daughter?  etc.We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. Try us on twitter @dads_film, on Facebook Bad Dads Film Review or on our website baddadsfilm.com. Until next time, we remain... Bad Dads

On this barren inhospitable skerry, they built a cabin. The island provided Tove and Tuulikki with a place to be alone and inspiration for their artistic endeavours. The book, initially published in the mid-90 in Swedish, and now available in English, is a collection of memories, notes and diary entries with 24 atmospheric illustrations (copper plate etchings and wash drawings) of the island by Pietila.
