Oakland-based DJ Patrick Wilson isn't new to the game. In fact, he's been DJing longer than some of us have been alive. He's been at it 39 years, first putting hands on decks around the age of 10. Now that's dedication. He and fellow Oaklander Nina Sol (who recorded her own AYLI podcast in 2018) are resident DJs at Elements, a party dedicated to deep, soulful house, both classic and new. They're celebrating five years of Elements on Saturday, January 18. This latest edition of the AYLI podcast is actually a live recording of Patrick and Nina at a previous Elements party. Decisive Podcast Munich Exclusive episode #56,Its my pleasure to introduce to you a young gentleman I met nearly 4 years ago, while shopping for studio gear in Munich. We introduced ourselves then quickly got into a conversation about his dj analog dj mixer (Urei) that needed repair or modified. He goes by the name Constantin Wittgenstein, born in 1994 in Munich, Germany and is currently studying Creative Music Technology at the Metropolitan in London, Uk. He started playing piano and the drums at the age of 5 and discovered the love for jazz, electronic and minimalistic music later on in school. From 12 on, he started with his own productions being influenced by jazz, funk, disco, soul, techno and house. He also works as a DJ since nine years continuously digging and exploring “music for the mind, body and soul”. Over the last couple of years he played at various clubs including the late Bob Beaman, Munich and Brilliant Corners, London. Fred P’s music is not just deep, but spiritual. Under his own name as well as Black Jazz Consortium, FP-Oner and FP197, the man from Queens, New York imbues his bottomless grooves with pensive pads and emotionally loaded keys that sink you into another dimension. His DJ sets are also cathartic experiences for mind, body and soul, and he’s remained hugely prolific over the course of more than 11 LPs and 20 EPs during the last decade. His eternal aim is “to raise each other's consciousness”, and he never fails to do that whether playing all night long at one of his residences or serving up releases on his own Soul People Music. In October, that label came to an end after more than a decade, only to make way for Perpetual Sound, which launched with a new Black Jazz Consortium EP featuring remixes from Mr G and Fred P. His emotionally awakening style is present and correct on this 90 minute mix he serves up for us. It starts with warm and cavernous atmospheres and the sort of balmy pads and tight basslines that define his sound, before progressing into a zoned out techno sound. Always smooth and meditative, moments of jazzy musicality are never far away, and there is a timeless nature to everything Fred does. Without him, then, dance music wouldn’t be anywhere near as deep.

Fred Peterkin is a man of many names; best known for his work as Fred P he also releases under Black Jazz Consortium, FP-Oner, FP197, Anomaly, the list goes on. But no matter what name he picks for each project there's an unmistakable sound that runs across all his work, and that sound is born from a passionate and unending dedication to underground house music. Hailing from New York City Peterkin has released an impressive number of records over the past decade working with labels like Jus Ed's Underground Quality and Mule Music alongside his own imprint – Soul People Music. And, while his style is deeply rooted in house music, he is by no means limited to the genre. As well as producing, he's also a natural DJ who blends expertly applied craft with a simple musical intuition that can't be taught. With an album under his Adventures of Captain P moniker dropping soon, and him passing through London to play Oval Space, we jumped at the chance to meet up with him in his hotel room and find out what makes him tick. Having setup and established his own record label Soul People Music in 2005, he's primarily operated it as an outlet for himself but has also released tracks from the likes of Move D and Jus-Ed. Ahead of his performance in room 2 at Fabric on Saturday 23rd February we caught up with the Fred Peterkin for a short Q+A on his musical heritage, analog gear and forthcoming releases.
