When Black Orchid Empire have new music, we all pay attention. They create huge, memorable rock music that combines heavy-hitting savagery with intense melodic beauty. Their technical, fearlessly complex grooves and gigantic sing-along choruses have already earned them a widespread fanbase. It's not just on record though either, as they are a ferociously tight live band. Having toured Europe and the UK extensively, supporting Skunk Anansie, HED P.E, INME, Cellar Darling and Black Map as well as festival slots at Download, Standon Calling, Tech Fest, Teddy Rocks and Planet Rockstock. Following on from album releases with Long Branch Records and Season of Mist, the band have now sign with a brand-new label and have released the song ‘Angelfire', the first single from their upcoming album. The single release also comes ahead of their highly anticipated Spring UK tour. We spoke to guitarist and vocalist, Paul about the new single. Not just delving into the creative process but finding out more about the band's long-term plans and why it is so exciting. We also talk about how Black Orchid Empire have got to this point in time, the work that goes into creating something, being so ‘hands on', and so much more. What fills the space between stars in our universe? Pure nothingness? After sparking interest with our curious audience at Standon Calling, Tessa Baker visited us in Exeter. She discusses how space, in fact, isn't empty and still, but can twist and stretch like a piece of elastic. And when it does, it produces special ‘sounds' called gravitational waves, which we can hear with some incredible instruments. Tessa Baker is Professor of Cosmology and Royal Society University Research Fellow at the University of Portsmouth. She take us on a journey through outer space, black holes, and the most violent events in the universe, to explain one of the most exciting scientific discoveries of the century, and what it means for our understanding of the cosmos.

Cover your mouths and don't get too close to Remfry! Riot Act is here again, but poor Remmers is still suffering from the deadly COVID. Steve is fine, although he is pretty certain he's going to get it in the next few days, so something to look forward to next week. We've managed to cast our ears over the latest releases from Charli XCX, Weezer, Animals As Leaders and Helpless, plus we talk about a whole bunch of recent events involving Ghost and Maneskin impressively taking even broader steps into the mainstream, Standon Calling's gender balanced festival bill and Aaron Lewis from Staind TELLING IT HOW IT IS! FINALLY! What a divvy. This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Chartable - https://chartable.com/privacy
Alex Trenchard is the founder of Standon Calling, a 17,000 capacity festival that takes place every year in Hertfordshire. The festival brings together thousands of music fans and hundreds of talented workers who together are part of putting on something spectacular. But when festivals disappeared at the start of the pandemic - many of us didn't realise just how much they meant to us. Over 85,000 people in the UK are employed by the festival industry, and for many the first few months of 2021 left them in limbo, not knowing whether they were going to have a job come summer. After Alex was forced to cancel the festival in 2020, the festival was left almost bankrupt. Alex faced loosing his business and his livelihood. But as the vaccine programme progressed and case numbers for COVID-19 started to fall, it brought hope that the festival might be able to return for 2021. And so Alex started planning. Our producer Robbie Wojciechowski has been following Alex and some of the voices that make the festival industry happen over the last few months as they fight to go ahead. For bands and artists, festivals this summer will be their first live performances in 18 months. And for Alex, if he manages to run, he'll be one of the first independent festivals to do so. But it's a mammoth task, as variants of the virus spread, and case numbers continue to rise. We find out what it took to get the festival industry and live music back on track. Produced by Robbie Wojciechowski

This week's News-Ish was a very special one; recorded live from Standon Calling! It kicked off with a lovely bit of audience interaction, which was helped by the rain bringing in festival revellers, much to the delight of Seann and Mark. As usual though, Seann's mum was on the phone to deliver the latest dose of local news, including her visit to the animal hospital, and much, much, much more. Seann and Mark also delved into the problems of Fortnite, and introduced a new feature called ‘Can You Cross Your Legs'. Neither Seann and Mark could cross their legs, and neither could guest Jake Lambert, who was on weather duties. Seann also had a fight with a child and lost.

We've got a digital delight for you from Standon Calling 2010... we've taken taken the audio from the videos we shot and, combining it with the live recording of the set we've recreated the audience participatory sections that otherwise would feel empty (Kids in America and the finale) with a couple of Mixnot interactions thrown in there for good measure. We think it's pretty funking special. It's not often you can finish a DJ set with the audience singing :-> 00 - Murder On The Standon Express Intro 01 - The Eurythmics - Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) 02 - Primal Scream - Rocks 03 - James Brown vs Prince - Kiss Machine 04 - Gnarls Barkley - Smiley Faces 05 - Phenomenal Handclap Band - Baby [Clock Opera rmx] 06 - Kim Wilde - Kids In America 07 - Talking Heads - Psycho Killer 08 - Sebastian Tellier - Kilometer [Aeroplane rmx] 09 - Junior Jack - Thrill Me 10 - Felix Da Housecat - Pretty Girls Don't Dance (What Should I Do?) 11 - Deep Swing - In The Music 12 - Reel to Reel - Jazz It Up 13 - Duck Sauce - aNYway 14 - Digitalism - Pogo [Digitalism's Pogo Robotic rmx] 15 - LCD Soundsystem - Us Vs Them [Go Home Productions rmx] 16 - Dawn Penn - You Don't Love Me (No No No) 17 - Ray Charles - I Got a Woman 18 - Madness - One Step Beyond 19 - Crissy Criss - Take Me Higher [Dubstep rmx] 20 - David Bowie - Modern Life 21 - Blur - Coffee & TV 22 - Florence and the Machine - Rabbit Heart [Leo Zero rmx] 23 - ...specially selected Standon soliliquy
