Seja talks to her guest Gaz Coombes (Supergrass) about what it's like supporting Robbie Williams in Australia, his current killer band members and his latest album ‘Turn the Car Around'. Gaz tells Seja about translating these songs to a live setting, building his home studio and how that sparked a big moment of songwriting energy, and how his record became a comfort and a friend during the UK lockdowns. They chat about the writing and recording process including trying to keep first takes, mumble tracks and crafting the ideas, how Lennon made Gaz feel ok to express all the big feelings, getting signed as a teenager and capitalising on the Britpop label. Gaz's strange story was illustrated by Davey Lane @daveyhellolane. Thank you also to Davey for helping to make the whole chat happen. All illustrations can be seen on instagram @hearsejpodcast or on the HearSej facebook page.
If you're like me and came of age in the 90's, then Supergrass loom large. The UK band exploded into the Brit Pop scene like a firecracker, with a song that captured the cheeky charm they'd come to be known for. Six albums followed, before they called it a day. And a few years later, lead singer Gaz Coombes went out on his own.In the last decade or so, Gaz has released a handful of critically acclaimed solo albums, and despite the madness of the era he came up in, remains one of the more grounded and lovely muso's around.Gaz came to Australia to support Robbie Williams on some huge stadium shows, and while he was here I asked him to Take 5. From Scott Walker to Broadcast to Lennon, this is a brilliant conversation and peek into a great songwriter's brain.Captain Beefheart - Sure ‘Nuff 'n' Yes, I doDaniel Rossen - Silent SongBroadcast - I Found The FScott Walker – It's Raining TodayJohn Lennon – Remember
It's our fourth year of getting the patrons together and giving thanks for the new music that gave us happiness and good vibes in 2023. There's a wide array of bands and artists, new and old, that helped make 2023 a great year for music. The frontman of one of the biggest music acts of the 90's, Supergrass, Gaz was born in Oxford to a food scientist father and an English teaching mother. The family moved to San Francisco for a few of Gaz's formative years, before returning to Oxford and at 13, he met 15-year-old Danny Goffey on the school playing field and that was the beginning of musical history. Supergrass released six studio albums in their 17 years and famously turned down an offer from Stephen Spielberg for the band to do a Monkees style TV series. The band broke up in 2010 and although they reformed, and played Glastonbury last year, Gaz has been making critically acclaimed solo records and has just released his fourth album Turn the Car Around. Britpop is back! From Supergrass to solo, singer-songwriter Gaz Coombes steers us through the musical moments that shaped his sound, from his early childhood in San Francisco to teenage antics in the Oxfordshire countryside. There's the time his voice broke on stage, to working with Jim Henson's Muppets and finding a renewed confidence post-Britpop.

Gaz Coombes is an English musician, singer and songwriter who first rose to fame as the frontman for alternative rock band Supergrass, whose debut album 'I Should Coco' (1995) made a lot of heads turn, particularly because fo the hit single 'Alright'. After his departure from Supergrass in 2010 Gaz found himself still writing songs for what eventually would be his succesful solo career. 'Turn The Car Around' (2023) is his most recent endeavour, having released three solo albums previously, and we spoke with Coombes about the album, the freedom to explore ideas, writing for Supergrass and the Supergrass reunion, the themes on the new album, the magic of playing live, feeling thankful, and a lot more! Ketamine and magic mushrooms are notorious for their damaging side-effects, including paranoia, depression and other ‘bad trips'. But the process of carefully administering small amounts of these drugs - so-called ‘microdosing' - is now gaining traction both recreationally and in medical settings. In this episode, Olly meets NHS worker Nathan*, who credits his psilocybin experiments with improving his interpersonal skills at work; and Irish artist Tamzin, who suffered poor mental health for decades until a pioneering Austrian doctor suggested she should try a course of ketamine as an antidepressant… ____________________ Meanwhile, in the Zeitgeist, Ollie Peart checks out the Chinese medical tradition of ear seeds. Can placing a series of small stickers on his ears make him feel less anxious, or suppress chronic pain? And what of his other ‘health trend' predictions for 2023 - padel tennis, personalised nutrition plans, and weight-loss drug tirzepatide? Are any about to become a permanent fixture in our health routines? _____________________ Elsewhere, in the Foxhole, Alix Fox has exciting news of a little-known fetish for elbow-sucking, and assists a listener who would like to know how to dig deep into his partner's G-Area… Which toys are best suited for G-Area play? Is G-Area enhancement surgery worth considering? And why don't we call it the G-Spot any more? Alix has all the answers. _____________________ Finally, our record of the month is ‘Long Live The Strange' a delicious slice of rock-fun from Gaz Coombes, from his new album Turn The Car Around. _____________________ This episode is sponsored by Stitch Fix, the personal styling site that sends you great clothes to try on at home. Let's face it, there is a patchy record for solo artists that began in popular 90s bands. Some crossed the rubicon to a credible solo career and some didn't. While Gaz Coombes enjoyed the full glare of the spotlight of the second half of the 90s with Supergrass, his solo work has surpassed those years in many ways. 2018's World's Strongest Man felt like a step forward in this third phase of Coombe's music career (he has been making music in commercial bands since the age of 15, so let's call Supergrass his second phase).Gaz hasn't felt the need to rush things. Since Supergrass split in 2010 (they came together for a resplendent but brief reunion live tour in 2022) he has released four solo albums, each one a steady progression on the one before. But none of his solo work sounds like the band that first made him a famous face and voice. What's been cool about doing these last few solo records is building up this entirely new fan base, not just expecting people to have come over from Supergrass”.The path to a viable, successful solo career is a pretty precarious one, but it feels like Gaz has found his way on that path. His new album Turn The Car Around continues in the same vein as World's Strongest Man, showcasing the variety of tricks Coombe's has in the bag, from classic melancholic songs to nagging grooves and dirty guitar sounds. From this point onwards, he's pushing himself further. “I've called this album the last one of a trilogy, just to force myself to look at my career in a different way from now on. I've known where I wanted to take it before but this time I'm not sure. I want to do something different, so it'll be jazz metal”. As broadcast September 29, 2022 with plenty of pointers for your sisters. Tonight we marked this date in 1994 when The Pointer Sisters became the first African-American female group to get a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame. There's a lot to say on the miasma that created this very late reality for the Pointers, but from our side the only thing to say is big up forever. Great tunes following the opening for our Sampled funk & soul first hour, with new tunes from Young Gun Silver Fox, Lyves, and Danny Toeman being highlights in a London-heavy first 57. Dan Lloyd once again bops through with the latest, greatest, and less so from the world of rock for our AMPED feature in hour 2. As broadcast June 9, 2022 with plenty of podcast pinballs provided no quarters necessary. We mark two years since Bonnie Pointer met her demise, leaving only the eldest of the original Pointer Sisters as the lone survivor. We had a smattering of new tunes to cover this week in our Sampled funk & soul first hour, but also had a lot of recent joints that we kind of slept on, with John Batiste, Danielle Ponder, The Frightnrs, and Lettuce being highlights of a strong first half. Dan Lloyd once again kicks in the door and makes us call him uncle in hour 2 for our AMPED rock feature, with a lotta good, a lotta bad, and a generally mixed bag heading to the end of the show. However, as usual, our guy on the drums had his fun too, with a hilarious mashup of the new Muse tune with Gary Glitter highlighting how derivative and ridiculous that latest single is from the former.#feelthegravityTracklisting:Part I (00:00)The Pointer Sisters – Pinball Number CountDanielle Ponder – The Only Way OutMickey De Grand IV – GeraldineJon Batiste – TELL THE TRUTHJungle – PROBLEMZLettuce – Vamanos Part II (31:33)Haley Johnsen – EmilyYola & The Highwomen feat Cheryl Crow – Hold OnEl Michels Affair feat Bobby Oroza – Stack The DeckThe Frightnrs – AlwaysMaverick Sabre – Good ManKatalyst feat Adrian Younge & Ali Shaheed Muhammad – JuneteenthBrian Jackson – Nancy Wilson (Shigeto remix) Part III (66:53)Panic! In which our heroes talk s*** about Ben Folds.....again!I'm joined this week by new, regular cohost Leon to talk about how I think Ben Folds is the greatest songwriter of my lifetime, or failing that at least in the top one. We send birthday wishes to Jeff Ament, Steve Harris and Gaz Coombes and share memories of Supergrass. We pay tribute to 3 "Great" records celebrating anniversaries this week in U2's The Joshua Tree, Let Me Come Over from the wonderful Buffalo Tom and the sledgehammer of the debut album from Bodycount. After that we get into some of our recent listens including Scandinavian rockers Volbeat and Leon tells us about nearly joining a cult while watching Ghost at Knebworth (we'll have a review on the new album in a couple of weeks) I took a time out from listening to Mark Lanegan last week and cheered myself up with the first album from under the radar, high energy carnival steampunks, Tankus the Henge.I close the show by trying to sell Leon on my favourite artist, Ben Folds. After Sam dismissed the first album from Ben Folds Five with "I just don't want it anywhere near me" (A quote for the poster!) I hope to have more luck with my best friend of 30 years. Warning his tenure as co-host of this podcast could be short-lived!! As always, thanks for listening. In this week's caper, our heroes trawl through the wacky world of Split Enz. Prior to their new wave pop success of the 1980s, they were contemporaries of Genesis and Roxy Music, displaying all of the proggy goodness that you want from the mid 1970s.Of course throughout the episode, they bring their esoteric sense of humour and plenty of laughs.Head over to www.asoundpurchase.com/shop to see our new retro design tshirt, mug, or stickers; as well as our long promised ‘Rhodes' tshirt.Your support of this podcast is hugely appreciated, you have been vital to the sanity of our heroic podcast hosts. In this episode our heroes recount tales of adventures old as they run through all prior episodes running up to this one, the big 5.0. Along the way they share inside baseball anecdotes about the making of, alongside some of their favourite moments of the pod (thus far).Special mention this week goes to producer Robbie who has completed his ASoundPurchase crash course by diving in and out of each and every episode to find you, dear listener, a nugget of aural gold.Head over to www.asoundpurchase.com/shop to see our new retro design tshirt, mug, or stickers; as well as our long promised ‘Rhodes' tshirt.Your support of this podcast is hugely appreciated, you have been vital to the sanity of our heroic podcast hosts. In this tall tale our heroes enter the familiar land of alt rock, but not as they know it. In this land, microphone stands also carry singers and the masculinity and bravado are on full display. This land is soundtracked by Julian Cope's 1987 release ‘Saint Julian'.Head over to www.asoundpurchase.com/shop to see our new retro design tshirt, mug, or stickers; as well as our long promised ‘Rhodes' tshirt.Your support of this podcast is hugely appreciated, you have been vital to the sanity of our heroic podcast hosts. On this occasion our heroes are taking another trip down under and set aside their vegemite sandwiches to discuss Courtney Barnett's 2015 release ‘sometimes I sit and think, and sometimes I just sit'.The line “I wanna go out but I wanna stay home” bellowed out of a tinny radio hung above the counter of a Dunedin coffee shop. In between ravenous bites of his croissant, Stefan's ears caught the monotonous melody and hooked him in. Part of the appeal was the contrast between the trippy and the aggressive rock; but ultimately what we really latched onto was her lyrical worldview. It takes some serious skill to make the mundane interesting.Of course along the way they share laughs, anecdotes, and outrageous opinions.Head over to www.asoundpurchase.com/shop to see our new retro design tshirt, mug, or stickers; as well as our long promised ‘Rhodes' tshirt.Your support of this podcast is hugely appreciated, you have been vital to the sanity of our heroic podcast hosts. In this campaign our heroes are once again lurking in the shadows, covered in eyeliner and generally looking a bit sad as they once again plunge into the depths of 80s Gothic Rock. This episode is focussing on Bauhaus' ‘Mask'.From posh Gil Scott-Heron inspired spoken word, to guitar theatrics that make The Edge seem like a rookie; Bauhaus have captured the imagination of generations and continue to be an influence.Of course along the way they share laughs, anecdotes, and outrageous opinions.Head over to www.asoundpurchase.com/shop to see our new retro design tshirt, mug, or stickers; as well as our long promised ‘Rhodes' tshirt.Your support of this podcast is hugely appreciated, you have been vital to the sanity of our heroic podcast hosts. In this escapade our heroes are taken away, but they don't mind, as long as you promise them they'll be back in time... to deliver their Rhodesiest episode yet, the power trio of aggressive crunch, big booming bangs and silky smooth bottom end; of course we are talking about the David RHODES Band's 2014 release ‘RHODES' (you see, you see)Entirely crowdfunded through the now defunct pledge music, ‘Rhodes' is a masterclass on tone, eq and songwriting; which you could only expect from a trio that have recorded with the likes of Our Lord & Saviour (Peter Gabriel), Goldfrapp, Paul McCartney and Tim Finn.Of course along the way they share laughs, anecdotes, and outrageous opinions.Head over to www.asoundpurchase.com/shop to see our new retro design tshirt, mug, or stickers; as well as our long promised ‘Rhodes' tshirt.Your support of this podcast is hugely appreciated, you have been vital to the sanity of our heroic podcast hosts. In this escapade our heroes don their sweatpants and slide down into the world of chill out, downtempo, and the sensational swishy sonorities of Air's 1998 masterpiece ‘Moon Safari'‘Moon Safari' is the record to spin when you need the world to slow down. The atmospheric soundscapes guide you to distant locations and just as you are about to drift off, they catch you out and jolt you awake.Of course along the way they share laughs, anecdotes, and outrageous opinions.Head over to www.asoundpurchase.com/shop to see our new retro design tshirt, mug, or stickers; as well as our long promised ‘Rhodes' tshirt.Your support of this podcast is hugely appreciated, you have been vital to the sanity of our heroic podcast hosts. In this excursion our heroes delve deep into the world of single take music videos, bombastic synth tones and the amazing self branding of Goodshirt on their debut record ‘Good'.Featuring songs that have become beloved in New Zealand, Goodshirt's ‘Good' features deceptively well crafted songs hidden amongst the spectacle of crazy sounds and wacky videos. Sadly they've only managed two records and an ep since 2002, but hope is still strong among the dedicated fans, especially as the band have announced fresh gigs this very week.Of course along the way they share laughs, anecdotes, and outrageous opinions.***New merchandise alert*** head over to www.asoundpurchase.com/shop to see our new retro design tshirt, mug, or stickers; as well as our long promised ‘Rhodes' tshirt.Your support of this podcast is hugely appreciated, you have been vital to the sanity of our heroic podcast hosts. In this escapade our heroes tease their hair, don the black eyeliner, and wear their Sunday black as they delve deep into the gothic post-punk world of the Cure and their sophomore record ‘Seventeen Seconds'Robert Smith and Lol Tolhurst were joined by Simon Gallup and Matthieu Hartley in an expanded lineup that introduced new sounds. Moving away from their Beatles inspired debut, ‘three imaginary boys', the quartet dove deep into soundscapes, motorik drumming and Jangle.Of course along the way they share laughs, anecdotes, and outrageous opinions.***New merchandise alert*** head over to www.asoundpurchase.com/shop to see our new retro design tshirt, mug, or stickers; as well as our long promised ‘Rhodes' tshirt.Your support of this podcast is hugely appreciated, you have been vital to the sanity of our heroic podcast hosts. In this adventure our heroes navigate the interpersonal world of No Doubt, as they traversed break ups and a member departure all the while recording and promoting their smash third record ‘Tragic Kingdom'Gwen Stefani may be more known now as a judge on the voice, or perhaps as the cheerleader clapping back at Courtney Love; but back then she was a ska singer with the same voice we know and love. Joined by the hair-metal inspired guitar of Tom Dumont, the stunning bass of Tony Kanal and rocksteady drums of Adrian Young; Stefani and the boys fuse ska/reggae with 90s poppunk. The guys are joined by correspondent Dani, a LA native, lending her musical, geographic and singing knowledge to provide some authenticity to this episodeOf course along the way they share laughs, anecdotes, and outrageous opinions.***New merchandise alert*** head over to www.asoundpurchase.com/shop to see our new retro design tshirt, mug, or stickers; as well as our long promised ‘Rhodes' tshirt.Your support of this podcast is hugely appreciated, you have been vital to the sanity of our heroic podcast hosts. In this adventure our heroes fill the tank and get the hell outta Dodge. They trade the skyscrapers of LA for the rock n roll bastion, Joshua Tree National Park; all of which is done comfortably from their studios in the South Coast of England, purely by immersing themselves in Songs for the Deaf by Queens of the Stone Age.Josh Homme, everyone's favourite desert rocker, collected a rag tag group of like minded headbangers to share this concept album. Bassist Nick Oliveri, who came up with the concept of a car journey; Mark Lanegan from Screaming Trees; and everyone's favourite drummer turned guitarist, the very face of rock n roll, Dave Grohl slapping some skins. The album is heavy, melodic and transportative as it carries you from your little spot and smacks you into the Californian desert.Of course along the way they share laughs, anecdotes, and outrageous opinions.***New merchandise alert*** head over to www.asoundpurchase.com/shop to see our new retro design tshirt, mug, or stickers; as well as our long promised ‘Rhodes' tshirt.Your support of this podcast is hugely appreciated, you have been vital to the sanity of our heroic podcast hosts.
