This week we acknowledged World Radio Day, International Women's Day, and 22 years since Space released 'Tin Planet'. I remember buying it the day it came out, and it being the only thing that kept me going through a day of really bad toothache which made my face swell up. That may have been too much information, but in these coronavirus-ridden times, never underestimate the power of music! We also proved there's still some gigs to go out and see too... Tonight I chatted to good buddy of the show Millie from Laika Spacedog, who is holding a performance of a play she wrote, entitled The Lighthouse, this coming Monday (9th March) at 8pm at the Queens Theatre in Hornchurch as part of their regular 'Scratch Night' for upcoming talent. We heard all about the unusual back story that inspired the play as well as meeting some of the actors you'll see performing. You can find out more about 'The Lighthouse' and order tickets on the Queens Theatre website, while you can hear more of Millie's tracks (we played two tonight) on her SoundCloud page. First up tonight I was joined in the studio by local singer-songwriter Rachel Arnold, just ahead of her appearance at the Essex Undiscovered solo artist heat at Chelmsford's Hot Box venue. In less than 2 years since releasing her first song, Rachel has already amassed quite a catalogue of tracks and, as we found out, some of them were played on a piano once used by Coldplay's Chris Martin! Click above to listen back to that story and many more! Find Rachel on Facebook and SoundCloud. Next up it was the return of Parrilla. Chris & Dani also joined us just ahead of an Essex Undiscovered appearance, theirs being at Chinnery's in Southend. They've also just released their new EP, Dancefloor Messiah, from which we heard 3 tracks tonight, alongside a track from Chris' solo project Razorrhead, which featured a guest vocal from Dani. Parrilla can next be seen at Colchester's The Bull on April 3rd as part of Metal 2 the Masses - in the meantime you can find them on Facebook and Bandcamp, where the EP is on sale now. First up tonight I was joined in the studio by Micky Niner. Previously a guest on the show as a member of The Recoupes, Micky started his new solo project in November last year with his debut single Teenage Disaster and has had a busy time since, working on his new EP Songs For Cars which is out this week. Click above to listen back to the interview where we discuss the various motor vehicles that inspired the new EP, and a reminder of Micky’s previous band’s claim to fame on national daytime TV. Find Micky on Facebook and Twitter! Next up I was joined by Motorcycle Display Team (l-r Morgan, Steve, Jim). After first forming 12 years ago, the trio may not do much with motorcycles but do have a fine back catalogue of material, including their latest album Yours Probably. With more new tracks in the pipeline, which we got a sample of tonight in the form of a live session, it’s safe to say we’ll be hearing a lot more revving from these guys soon! Click above to listen back to the interview, including tales of heckling and the time their name got them into a spot of bother… you can find all things MDT at www.mdtband.com. First up tonight I was joined once again by Stackfest organisers James and Joe to chat about this year’s event, held again at the Haystack Pub on Canvey Island this coming Bank holiday weekend, but this year with a full three days of live music across two stages, and with no less than 47 acts of a variety of genres on offer, it’s all set to be Essex’s biggest free live music event! Join the party on May 4th, 5th & 6th – check www.stackfest.net for more info! Next up I was joined by Essex metal foursome Political Hesitation (l-r Conor, George, Craig, Amadu). The Southend-based quartet have released two singles so far, The Truth (available on their Bandcamp page) and Reggie (available on Spotify), and are currently recording their first album which, as we discussed, is set to feature a huge variety of genre and instrument crossovers! We were given a preview of what to expect in the form of two track snippets tonight, and the album is set for a summer release date – they’re also planning to hit the local live scene again then too. Keep up to date on the band’s Facebook and Instagram pages.
