The Dandy Warhols formed in Portland, Oregon in 1994, born from the city's gritty alternative scene. Fronted by the charismatic and sardonic Courtney Taylor-Taylor, the band initially carved out a niche with a sound that merged psychedelic rock, shoegaze textures, and garage grit. Their name, a clever play on pop artist Andy Warhol, reflected their art-house attitude and offbeat sensibility right from the start. The band's 1995 debut Dandys Rule OK was released on the indie label Tim/Kerr Records and earned them a deal with Capitol Records. It wasn't until their third album, Thirteen Tales from Urban Bohemia (2000), that they broke through internationally—led by the iconic single “Bohemian Like You.” The song's catchy riff and slacker spirit captured a moment, helped along by a high-profile feature in a Vodafone ad, which made it an anthem of early-2000s alt culture.Known as much for their aesthetic and attitude as their music, The Dandy Warhols often played with the line between satire and sincerity. Their early 2000s feud/friendship with Brian Jonestown Massacre—documented in the acclaimed film Dig!—added to their mythos, painting them as the more commercially savvy counterparts in a tale of two brilliant but volatile bands.Despite ups and downs with labels and shifting public tastes, the Dandys have remained prolific. Their sound evolved over time, incorporating synth-pop, glam, and even industrial influences, while keeping that core fuzzed-out irreverence intact. Albums like Welcome to the Monkey House (2003) and Distortland (2016) showed their willingness to shift gears while poking fun at pop culture and themselves.Still active today, The Dandy Warhols continue to tour and release new material, including 2024's “Rockmaker”—a return to heavy grooves and wry commentary. Whether you're revisiting their hits or diving into deeper cuts, the Dandys remain a band that defies easy categorization, staying true to their motto: “It's not about being famous, it's about being cool.”Official Links:

Portland's Iconic Collective FEDERALE released their sixth studio album, "Reverb & Seduction" on Jealous Butcher Records and also marking the band's 20th Anniversary. In the 20 years of their existence, Federale has carved out a unique niche within the indie music landscape, blending their signature spaghetti-Western instrumental sound with increasing doses of moody vocal arrangements in the spirit of Lee Hazlewood and Leonard Cohen. Through it all, I spoke with songwriter and lead singer COLLIN HEGNA – who also spent the last 20 years as a dues-paying member of The Brian Jonestown Massacre – maintains a strictly retro vibe. Federale's records have always sounded period-correct for an alternate-universe 1971, where rock and roll never caught on. Earlier, the band released the lead track, "Heaven Forgive Me" and "No Stranger" a song that pays homage to the legendary Lee Hazlewood. Recorded at Hegna's Revolver Studios in Portland, this album was engineered by Collin Hegna, Matt Thomson and Andrew Joslyn, who boasts five 5 Grammy Award winning albums. The album was mixed by Hegna with Jeff Stuart Saltzman (The Black Keys, The High Violets) and Matt T.To watch the interview on You Tube :  https://www.youtube.com/@DJNocturnahttps://federalepdx.comhttps://linktr.ee/FederalePDX

He co-founds and christens the neo-psychedelic pop group The Teardrop Explodes with Julian Cope but walks out of the band just as they are about to break big and goes to work in a tearoom instead. He then forms The Wild Swans, the indie-band of choice for literary-minded teens in the early 1980s, and Care with Ian Broudie of The Lightning Seeds, sharing a flat with a seventeen-year-old Courtney Love along the way. Marriage, fatherhood, tropical illness, and divorce follow, interspersed with artistic collaborations with Bill Drummond and members of The Brian Jonestown Massacre, among others. Following an onstage reunion with Cope at the Royal Festival Hall, Simpson discovers that seven thousand miles away, in the Philippines, he is considered a musical god. Presidential suites, armed-guards, police escorts you couldn't make it up, and, incredibly, he does' t need to. Revolutionary Spirit is the story of a musician driven by an unerring belief that artistic integrity will bring its own rewards. It concludes with an exorcism of sorts as Simpson finally rids himself of the debilitating demon of psychological depression that has, from the age of nine, run like malware in the background of his life.

There’s a handful of D.O.A. covers from a fantastic new tribute album, No Escape From What You Are. And, as always, there’s always some brand new bands getting their first airing on my show. Since forming nearly a decade ago, they've self-produced dizzying, otherworldly music that's connected with fellow travelers in the hallucinogenic world of outré rock music. Led by singer and guitarist Julian Porte along with founding members Gabriel Fernandez (lead guitar) and Johnathan Martin (percussion), the band has enchanted live audiences at Desert Daze and on tour with like-minded groups Post Animal and Psychedelic Porn Crumpets. The band's vivid sound has found them placed on popular playlists like Modern Psychedelia and the legendary superproducer's Danger Mouse Jukebox. Their 2015 debut, “Friends,” has surpassed 18 million streams. Joined by new member Kevin Perez (bass) in 2021, Levitation Room have continued to expand their colorful, unearthly sound, a process that has culminated with the vibrant new album Strange Weather. Collaborating with former Brian Jonestown Massacre keyboardist Rob Campanella, Jason Kick (Mild High Club), and Black Crowes' Joel Robinow, Levitation Room take a new step in their story and vision with Strange Weather. The record's lyrical narratives—about love in the park, life in the city, and the fact that “The world today is such an illusion”—are appropriately steeped in '60s sonics and a dreamy, lo-fi atmosphere. It's spacey, celestial guitar music for escaping into, and “it feels just like heaven.” 'Strange Weather' will be released February 16, 2024" Excerpt from https://greenwayrecords.com/artist/levitation-room/ Levitation Room: Bandcamp: https://levitationroom.bandcamp.com/album/headspace Instagram: @levitation_room Website: https://levitation-room.com Records: https://greenwayrecords.com/artist/levitation-room/ Merch: https://churchofpickle.com/collections/levitation-room The Vineyard: Instagram: @thevineyardpodcast Website: https://www.thevineyardpodcast.com Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSn17dSz8kST_j_EH00O4MQ/videos

In 2004, a rock doco came out that was pure chaos. Dig! captured 7 years in the life of The Dandy Warhols and Brian Jonestown Massacre as they tried to break it big. Made by a young first-time filmmaker called Ondi Timoner and her brother David, it's a wild story about growing up, art vs commerce, friendship and bust ups. 20 years later it's been re-cut as Dig! XX, with over 40 minutes of never-before-seen footage, and shown for the first time in Australia at the Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF). I jumped at the chance to get Director Ondi Timoner into the studio to Take 5. Because Ondi has stories. "Reverb & Seduction" The Portland outfit Federale have been one of the most fascinating and inventive bands of the last twenty years. Led by Collin Hegna, Federale have put out a handful of albums whose affecting instrumental cinemascapes, dark country ballads and psych rock excursions bring to mind a version of and the Dirty Three had they hailed from the verdant and moody Pacific Northwest. The band's new album and sixth overall, Reverb & Seduction is an ambitious and wicked blend of dusty pedal steel, high desert reverb and ominous strings that all add up to a deliciously dark and foreboding feeling that something's going to happen and not only is not going to be good, there's nothing you can do to stop it. With a lineup that boasts members of The Shivas, Roselit Bone, Dandy Warhols, and Rogue Wave, plus a guest appearance by Alex Maas of The Black Angels, Reverb & Seduction is one of the year's very best. As for Hegna, he's a busy fellow--not only does he front Federale, he's been in the Brian Jonestown Massacre for the past two decades, which also makes him the longest serving member of that band, he's a recording engineer and owner of Revolver Studios in Portland where he's produced records by everyone from Roselit Bone to David J. www.collinghegna.com www.federalemusic.bandcamp.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com (http://www.stereoembersmagazine.com) www.bombshellradio.com (http://www.bombshellradiocom) www.alexgreenbooks.com (http://www.alexgreenbooks.com) Twitter: @emberseditor IG; @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

Paul Simpson's story is one wild ride and it's all revealed in his memoir titled Revolutionary Spirit: A Post-Punk Exorcism. Part memoir, part social history, Revolutionary Spirit is the poignant, often hilarious story of a cult Liverpool musician's scenic route to fame and artistic validation. If Morrissey was the Oscar Wilde of the 1980s indie scene, Simpson was its William Blake, a self destructive genius so lost in mystical visions of a new Arcadia that he couldn't meet the rent. Simpson's career goes back to 1976, when he finds himself at the birth of Liverpool's second great musical explosion. Along the way, he co-founds and christens the neo-psychedelic pop group The Teardrop Explodes, shares a flat with a teenage Courtney Love, and forms The Wild Swans, who burn bright and brief, in the process recording one of the all-time great cult hit singles, ‘Revolutionary Spirit'. Marriage, fatherhood, and tropical illness follow, interspersed with artistic collaborations with Bill Drummond and members of The Brian Jonestown Massacre, among others. Eventually Simpson discovers that seven thousand miles away, in the Philippines, he is considered a musical god. Presidential suites, armed guards, police escorts—you couldn't make it up, and, incredibly, he doesn't need to. TV Star - In-Between from the 2023 album Hallucinate Me on Painter Man. Seattle's TV Star make desert-tinged neo-psych with nods to The Brian Jonestown Massacre and the Jesus and Mary Chain. Formed in 2020, the five-piece features members of Shine, Regional Justice Center, and Advertisement and unveiled their debut EP in February, Hallucinate Me. Our Song of the Day is the rambling “In-Between,” the dreamy guitar-led early single off the record. Ashlyn Nagel's crystalline vocals cry out with catharsis, “I'm comin clean/ I'm livin free/ The in-between,” about ditching what's expected in order to become one's authentic self. She had this to say about the song: “‘In-Between' is about breaking out of a funk, letting go of the pressure, and living the way you want to. It's about caring less what others think and making self-fulfilling decisions.” The song comes with a lo-fi fisheye shot video of the band on the road, being themselves. The Brian Jonestown are currently out on tour and also have 2 new records coming out including Fire Doesn't Grow on Trees which will be out June 24th. Anton and I sit down and dive deep into all things Jonestown so sit back and enjoy this conversation.
