Is this the toughest subject we've ever tackled? Izzie certainly thinks so and it's even making Dr Becky and Dr Robert's brains hurt. Helping them to make sense of these ‘weird and interesting' particles are Dr Kirsty Duffy at the University of Oxford and Director of the Paris Astrophysics Institute, Professor Kumiko Kotera. Izzie & Dr Becky think that space needs a spring clean, so this episode is all about space debris. What is it? How big of a problem is it? And what is being done to remove it? With thanks to PhD student Megan Perks from the University of Southampton, who studies how safe all these new satellite constellations are, and photographer Max Alexander, who has created an exhibition all about space debris. Join Frank for another Think on your Feet episode. The patrons have voted, so we're embarking on " versus Brethren of Ash" In Think on your Feet episodes, I endeavour not to edit much at all. Sometimes I cut some shuffling sounds or abbreviate some of my longer pauses (a chap's got to think!), but otherwise, it's uncut, unaltered and meant to feel like you're with me at the table. There may be mistakes and misplays, but hopefully some successes too. My deck: first scenario | second scenario 0.00 preamble 2.05 first scenario intro 4.35 opening hand 5.05 gameplay begins 33.10 first scenario analysis 33.55 second scenario intro 36.55 what's the map like? 41.03 opening hand 41.26 gameplay begins 1.27.15 I forget to take a horror from a pursuing Whippoorwill but a minute later I remember it. During the recording, I realise I may have made a rather major mess-up this playthrough, somehow internalising that Izzie's ability is once per test rather than once per round. I do spot this error at 1.01.25... and during the edit I've checked and I never in fact make the error! Phewee! Just shows how things can slip by. So even though I am not sure whether I used her ability multiple times per phase, it turns out... I didn't. In this episode of Greater Formation & Power, Coach Tom talks with his longtime friend, student and coaching client, André Cajeron about identity, healing, calling, and learning to live with greater authenticity before God.André shares his journey from Brazil to the United States, the confusion of trying to find his place in ministry, and how God gradually clarified his calling as a worship pastor. He opens up about painful childhood trauma, the long road of healing, and how hidden shame can distort identity and keep people isolated. She broke records. She earned the accolades. She defied the odds. And she’s just getting started! But Izzie Smulik’s story isn’t just about soccer…it’s about rising through adversity with grit, grace, and an unshakable faith in God’s plan. In this inspiring episode, Dr. ZachClinton sits down with his second cousin, Izzie Smulik, a standout high school soccer star from E.C. Glass High School in Lynchburg, VA. In just three years, Izzie became the school’s all-time leading scorer and points leader — for both boys and girls — earning titles like 1st Team All-State, ODP Regional Player, and most recently, a spot on a semi-pro team out of Charlottesville. But Izzie’s journey hasn’t been easy. From growing up with ADHD and dyslexia to being told she’d never play D1 soccer or graduate early, she’s overcome it all with the support of her family, her faith, and the game she loves. In this conversation, Zach and Izzie unpack: her recent invitation to compete with the Capelli Sports North American team in Denmark this week, her excitement about signing a full-ride to Liberty University Women’s Soccer, how soccer became a steadying force and a source of purpose, what it means to persevere with character through adversity, and the role of faith, family, and fierce determination in her growth every step of the way. If you’ve ever felt underestimated, overlooked, or unsure of what’s next, Izzie’s story will remind you that with faith and fight, “impossible” just becomes the new starting line.
If you have listened to the podcast for awhile, you have probably heard me reference the book Here For it: Or, How To Save Your Soul in America by R. Eric Thomas. It is a favorite of mine and had a big impact on me when I read it the first time in June of 2020, so I was SO excited when my friend and returning guest Izzie Call read it, loved it as well, and wanted to come on and talk about it with me. In the episode I referenced the review I wrote about it at the time, but then I never read the review so here it is: Eric Thomas grew up thinking he was a normal kid until others made him feel that he wasn't. Black, gay, and Christian, these essays reflect upon his experience of never fitting in, being discriminated against, and his hopeful journey to find his place in a country that he loves. Thomas' conversational writing style draws the reader in, and his ability to add humor to heartbreaking moments truly make these stories come to life. In a time when we can all use to learn more about other's experiences, this book was enlightening and truthful, with jokes that landed like Kerri Strug in the ‘96 Olympics. My guest this week is the always delightful Izzie Call. Izzie works as a museum educator for the VMFA coordinating projects related to the permanent collections and special exhibition displays including digital components, labels, and webresources. Izzie is a lifelong, passionate educator and feels most at home speaking about art with those who have an interest in learning. Also, thank you to Eric Thomas for sharing his favorite drink with me when in a moment of bravado (delusion?) Candice Lim is joined by Slate culture writer Nadira Goffe to break down the BookTok drama surrounding Old Enough by Haley Jakobson. Last year, Old Enough hit the shelves as a queer, coming-of-age novel about a sophomore in college named Sav and her ex-best friend, Izzie. A year later, a guest of Lucie Fink's podcast The Real Stuff claimed she was allegedly the basis for Izzie and that her childhood was “plagarized” for the novel — from her experience with sexual assault to sensitive details about her family. On today's episode, ICYMI asks how this BookTok drama became the “Bad Art Friend” of 2024 and where the lines should be drawn when it comes to using the trauma of others to sell a book. This podcast is produced by Se'era Spragley Ricks, Daisy Rosario and Candice Lim. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
