One of a handful of new musicals to open on Broadway this month is TAMMY FAYE, the musical story of the life of the controversial evangelist Tammy Faye Bakker. Having seen the show's world premiere production at the Almeida Theatre in London in 2022, Mickey-Jo was eager to catch the show's New York transfer at the recently refurbished Palace Theatre. This new production, directed by Rupert Goold stars Olivier Award winner Katie Brayben alongside Tony Award winners Christian Borle and Michael Cerveris, with a score by Sir Elton John and Jake Shears and a book from James Graham. Check out this full review for Mcikey-Jo's thoughts on the show's Broadway evolution, and why it fails to practice what it preaches. • 00:00 | introduction 02:51 | overview 10:13 | material 17:10 | production 23:36 | performances • get in person / live stream tickets to see MickeyJoTheatre LIVE at the Phoenix Arts Club: https://phoenixartsclub.com/events/mickeyjotheatre-live/ • get in person / live stream tickets to see MickeyJoTheatre LIVE at the Phoenix Arts Club: https://phoenixartsclub.com/events/mickeyjotheatre-live/ • About Mickey-Jo: As one of the leading voices in theatre criticism on a social platform, Mickey-Jo is pioneering a new medium for a dwindling field. "Unbreakable Heart" The Texas-born Amber Martin has no regrets. The singer/songwriter has lived quite a life and it's one that found her moving coast to coast in the name of art. But geography aside, Martin moves relentlessly forward and doesn't look back with revisionist repentance. She'll tell you all about that, so let me fill you in on the other stuff. A brilliant and powerful singer with precise phrasing and improvisational smarts, Martin is a force of nature, her live shows punctuated by comedic tales, observational stories and a classic cabaret sensibility. Her career has a lot of highlights, so let me give you a partial list: She opened for Joan Rivers, sang with Sandra Berhnard, recorded with the Scissor Sisters, performed on Broadway, had several solo art residencies and starred in the live variety show Cassette Roulette with the Tony Award winning John Cameron Mitchell of Hedwig and the Angry Inch. The follow-up to her AM Gold album, Martin's Unbreakable Heart is a wicked blast of classic country played with reverence and playful fun. From Devil Came Down The Dancefloor to I Want You To Be A Real Man, Unbreakable heart is played with precision, heart and a lively wink. The album features Mitchell, Rufus Wainwright and Jake Shears of the Scissor Sisters. A writer, a singer, a choreographer, and a dancer, Amber Martin is also a fabulous conversationalist. We had a blast and I think you will, too. www.ambermartin.org www.bombshellradio.com (http://www.bombshellradio.com) www.stereoembersmagazine.com (http://www.stereoembersmagazine.com) www.alexgreenbooks.com (http://www.alexgreenbooks.com) Stereo Embers Twitter: @emberseditor IG: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com (mailto:editor@stereoembersmagazine.com)

Queer The Music: Jake Shears On The Songs That Changed Lives
We're back with Season 2 of 'Queer The Music' and what better way to kick off this series with the brilliant Beth Ditto to talk about the anthem that is Gossip's ‘Standing In The Way of Control'. The powerful and absolute banger of a track is known for being a response to George W Bush's 2004 Federal Marriage Amendment which attempted to outlaw same sex marriage in the US. In this episode Beth goes into detail about where the idea and emotion came from when writing and recording the song. When Beth joined Jake at his apartment to record this episode they also had a brilliant time reminiscing about the grungy gay clubs from way back when that gave them their first tastes of queer freedom. In this comprehensive exploration of one of the world's most prolonged and tragic conflicts, Pappe uses recently declassified archival material to analyse the motivations and strategies of the generals and politicians – and the decision-making process itself – that laid the foundation of the occupation. From a survey of the legal and bureaucratic infrastructures that were put in place to control the population of over one million Palestinians, to the security mechanisms that vigorously enforced that control, Pappe paints a picture of what is to all intents and purposes the world's largest ‘open prison'. https://www.waterstones.com/book/the-biggest-prison-on-earth/ilan-pappe/9781786073419 Strangers in the House - Raja Shehadeh Raja Shehadeh was born into a successful Palestinian family with a beautiful house overlooking the Mediterranean. When the state of Israel was formed in 1948 the family were driven out to the provincial town of Ramallah. There Shehadeh grew up in the shadow of his father, a leading civil rights lawyer. He vowed not to become involved in politics or law but inevitably did so and became an important activist himself. In 1985 his father was stabbed to death. The Israeli police failed to investigate the murder properly and Shehadeh, by then a lawyer, set about solving the crime that destroyed his family. In Strangers in the House, Shehadeh recounts his troubled and complex relationship with his father and his experience of exile - of being a stranger in his own land. It is a remarkable memoir that combines the personal and political to devastating effect. https://www.waterstones.com/book/strangers-in-the-house/raja-shehadeh/9781846682506

It's a feat she'll repeat with a run of hits that dominates radio playlists. Can't Get You Out of My Head, with its La La La earworm, makes waves across the Atlantic. The future looks Golden. But in 2005, a shock diagnosis with breast cancer cuts the music short. Her illness and recovery play out in public.Through BBC Archive and new interviews with those who knew her at the time, you'll track the dizzy highs and crushing lows of a turbulent era for the Queen of Noughties Pop. An era that leaves her stronger, wiser - and more determined than ever to perform.Contributors include British singer and actor Olly Alexander, Tia Kofi, Jessie Ware, Beverley Knight, Jack Savoretti, Jake Shears and Cathy Dennis (who co-wrote Kylie's 2001 hit Can't Get You Out of My Head), as well as Radio 2 presenters Fearne Cotton and Michelle Visage.
Join Scott Mills for the ultimate celebration of the UK's best-loved pop star, who this year headlines Radio 2 in the Park on Sunday 17 September. The 90s are well underway, and Kylie Minogue is in uncharted territory. After splitting with powerhouse production team Stock, Aitken and Waterman, she's joined forces with indie label Deconstruction Records, spurning the advances of a slew of record industry suits. For Kylie, it's an era defined by experimentation. A new look, a new ethos and a host of unexpected collaborations: M People, Pet Shop Boys, Manic Street Preachers, Nick Cave and more. It's not always an easy ride. As an artist, she's maturing in the public eye. Caught between the worlds of pop and ‘credible' indie, Kylie fiercely resists pigeonholing from the press and fans alike.Through revealing interviews, both brand new and from the BBC Archive, you'll witness one of pop's great metamorphoses. A process that takes the girl who was Charlene, and molds her into one of pop's savviest operators, following her own road to megastardom. On the cusp of a new millennium, Kylie's ready to dominate the charts. However will she pull it off?Contributors include Keith Blackhurst, David Tennant, Beverley Knight, Jessie Ware (who collaborated with Kylie on the single Kiss of Life released in October 2021), Jack Savoretti (who duetted with Kylie for their 2018 song Music's Too Sad Without You), Jake Shears (who collaborated with Kylie for her 2004 single I Believe in You, as well as her 2010 album Aphrodite and their 2018 song Voices), and Radio 2 presenters Rylan Clark and Dermot O'Leary.
