Tauranga businesses are furious about what they label harsh outdoor dining fees following a tough winter. They've been waived for the rest of 2024, but in the new year businesses must pay an annual charge based on outdoor dining area. In Mount Maunganui it will be $150 per square metre used, which compares to Auckland, where the highest fee is $154 a square metre. Black Orchid Collective Cafe Owner Veronica de Oliveira told Ryan Bridge she understands the council wants to control the outdoor areas a bit since the summer is quite busy, but it's also the only time of the year that they're actually very busy. But when the lord discovers Nyssa looks just like his fiancée, he invites the TARDIS crew up to his manor for drinks and a costume ball. Unfortunately, the manor is also home to an unknown horror who escapes his bonds, steals the Doctor's fancy dress costume, and tries to kidnap the lord's bride-to-be. Is there more to the story? And why won't Lady Cranleigh alibi The Doctor when he's accused of murdering a butler? Justin's love for Mrs. J continues. Erik reveals the Doctor Who Magazine reader poll standings for Fifth Doctor stories. A new slogan for banh mi appears. Justin shares a theory about gothic horror. This week, Danny's death is somehow made up for by the culmination of a season-long arc which finally brings Michelle Gomez properly into the limelight. It's Dark Water. Notes and links This week's evil corporation is 3W, which gets it's name from the three words Don't cremate me. But, as Brendan points out, it's also the production code for Invasion of the Dinosaurs. We explain about production codes in unnecessary detail in the shownotes for Episode 237. The Black Orchid problem is that a two-part story has its climax at the halfway point instead of somewhere more appropriate. It's identified by El Sandifer in her essay on that story. Well, we found the clip for the shownotes: Brendan mentions Chris Addison's appearance on an episode of Have I Got News for You? hosted by Tom Baker. The whole episode is worth a watch, but the incident that Brendan refers to starts here. Once again, we allude to the Troops to Teachers programme, which gave veterans the chance to fast-track their teacher training so that they could work in schools. We start off with a “screwed in kid” and hugely beloved comedian Yannis Pappas unknowingly providing us with a new introduction! He finally got it back and it's off the charts at a respectable 2.5 grade (out of 10). We discuss the process of getting something officially graded and the current state of card collectibles, including the old Marvel Hologram cards. Kaz mentions one of the most pricey Pokemon cards to be the Black Orchid which we look further into.This leads us to seeing if AI can generate Pokemon cards, which not surprisingly, it can! And it does a damn good job at it. We try 2 different AI generators to see their output and compare, then play with the idea of creating a new playing card set generated entirely by AI! Why not!?We take a quick look at the website haveibeentrained.com, which will allow you to search the repositories certain AIs are using. We find Vive Report and confirm dgtlhrt is forever in the AI hive mind, unless of course he deletes the files from his host. Try searching for yourself, but don't be scared if you find anything, it's simply the internet scraped.While recounting past AI stories to Kaz, BillDance points out the day we're recording happens to be Elon Musk's AI Day and we look at the humanoid robots he'll be demoing during the presentation. Soon enough, we're asking AI to generate humanoid robot versions of Elon Musk, how could we resist!?We end things by looking at some of the new and very impressive “Small Homes” or “Modular Homes”, which dgtlhrt seems pretty set on purchasing eventually. We discuss how they are fireproof/ almost everything-proof, and how we might see these popping up in post-disaster areas, for instance Florida after the horrid damage from Hurricane Ian.
