    Interview: Simon (Composer/Guitars/Bass/Vocals) of AVKRVST

Two years on from their spellbinding debut 'The Approbation', Norwegian progressive rock group AVKRVST are poised to release their second and most formidable album 'Waving at the Sky', which is set for release on June 13th via InsideOutMusic. 'The Approbation' was praised by critics for its ambitious, immersive storytelling and its musical complexity. It was regarded as one of the best genre debuts in years, and it showcased AVKRVST as a top-tier newcomer in progressive music. Now, 'Waving at the Sky' takes everything that was compelling about 'The Approbation' and pushes it further towards progressive perfection. A dark and devastating concept record about real life events, it is a spiritual successor to its predecessor, and a huge leap forward on every conceivable level. Story-wise, 'Waving at the Sky' is the prequel to 'The Approbation'. The 7 news tracks are inspired by a gruesome family tragedy and the bleak soul from the debut, showcased as the lonely man in the cabin in previous music videos, is one of the characters in the new album. This story and the bleakness surrounding it is just one aspect of the new album that we discussed with AVKRVST's Simon Bergseth (composer, guitars, bass and vocals), alongside so much more. There's nobody quite like AVKRVST, and this interview showcases just why they are such a compelling group. Legendary Brit hardcore bruisers Desolated are back with their much-anticipated brand-new album, ‘Finding Peace', out on May 30th, 2025, via MLVLTD. Putting it bluntly, this is as mean as it gets. Desolated bring the stompy hardcore heavy, but with metalised intensity, and deliver each track with furious focus. It's been far too long, but finally, The Haunted are back! On their tenth studio album, ‘Songs of Last Resort', the Swedish legends set out to reclaim the modern thrash throne and deliver their most intense and vital music to date. It is out on May 30th, 2025, via Century Media. Somehow, the five-piece (Marco Aro – lead vocals / Jensen – rhythm guitar / Ola Englund – rhythm & lead guitar / Jonas Björler – bass, backing vocals / Adrian Erlandsson – drums) have turned the clock backwards, but also found new and exciting ways to express themselves. Choosing to look at the ever-encroaching darkness that surrounds this world, exploring the terrifying reality of worldwide destruction through war. It's not a happy subject to focus on, and The Haunted approach it with all the fire and fury of a band hellbent on causing some destruction themselves. Interview: Dan Woodhead (Bass) of Skies Turn Black

Skies Turn Black are an electronic metal band from the North of England, taking influence from guitar driven heavy metal and incorporating features of dance music. Their brand of metal can chop and change genre, to go from being rich in 80's heavy metal nostalgia with riffs and huge choruses to keytar led synth sections with aggressive drops that still packs that heavy punch. Since the release of 'No Place Like Home' in 2018, Skies Turn Black have added a keytar to line up, diversifying their sound to explore what genre bending electronics can add to the heavy metal at the core of the band. The result has taken the heaviness of dance music such as dubstep, to create an impactful twist to your run of the mill metal. Since their appearance at Bloodstock 2023, the band have played across the UK, performing at sold out shows in Sunderland, Nottingham, Huddersfield and Bristol. Away from the stage, the band have worked tirelessly to refine their sound. The end result being their stunning new album 'Broken Hearts & Bad Habits'. The new album puts more focus than ever on hooks, whilst keeping the band's intricate guitar work and anthemic choruses. Every song on the album exposes a vulnerability, addressing personal issues of love and lust, heartbreak and depression, as each song undertakes a journey of self-worth. Each song can be categorised as either a “Broken Heart” or a “Bad Habit” song. 'Broken Hearts And Bad Habits' will be released on June 27th, 2025, via Sliptrick Records. We spoke to bassist Dan Woodhead about the new album, the work that has gone into it, Skies Turn Black's journey since we last spoke (Bloodstock 2023), and so much more. Following on from the success of her debut EP ‘Existence Is Temporary', British progressive metal guitarist/vocalist Grace Hayhurst has returned with her debut full length album ‘The World Is Dying'. The album is set for release on June 27th, 2025. Starting life as a pianist before moving onto French Horn, performing with various orchestral ensembles across Europe, at age 18, Grace began dabbling on guitar with the likes of Yes and Opeth acting as her gateway drug. She proudly composed and recorded the bulk of the instruments, with other notable featured musician Robin Johnson of Kyros fame composing and playing the drum parts. Grace hopes there is something for everyone on this record, for fans of riffs, synths, slap bass, string quintets, French Horn duets, or drum solos that feel just very slightly too long. It permits a moment of reflection on our lives, how we interact with the world, the planet, society, and each other. Which is something we delve into here with Grace, as well as finding out more about her musical journey, the work that has gone into this record, taking over Sensible Music Studios (alongside Shelby Logan Warne), playing in a Rammstein tribute band (Rammlied), and so much more. Following a period of uncertainty (line-up changes and COVID-inspired roadblocks), Bury Tomorrow have spent the past few years laying out new paths with new possibilities previously thought unavailable resulting in a reinvigorated belief and fresh outlook on what the band can encompass. Now, they present ‘Will You Haunt Me with That Same Patience', their brand-new album, out now via Music for Nations / Sony Music UK. This isn't the best Bury Tomorrow album to date, in my opinion, but it's a mighty fine Bury Tomorrow album none the less. Whereas The Seventh Sun (2023) was them finding their feet following the significant line-up change, this is them in a brash and confident mood, emphatically reminding listeners of their metalcore prowess, while experimenting with more cleans and electronica than ever before. The Londoners are a mighty band, capable of delivering brutish heaviness, but also immense melody, and almost always wrap this all up in an anthemic way. Higher Walls are a London based hardcore quartet that fuses blisteringly fast guitar work, polyrhythmic drumming and technical bass, to create a sound unlike any other band on the London hardcore scene. Formed in 2020 by Jordan Kaad (Vocals), Radu Ghidirim (Guitar) and Stefan Babara (Drums), Higher Walls have built a catalogue of heavy hitting technical music that is proudly grounded in the traditions of bands such as Raised Fist, Terror and Antagonist A.D. Whilst also blending the ferocious energy of bands similar to Trap Them, Gaza & Nails. The band were joined by Chris Sparrow (bass) in 2024 and, with a refreshed outlook, released the Tear Them Down EP - setting the bar tremendously high for the quality and passion toexpect going forwards. In the short time they've bene around, they're released two singles, the first of which ‘Powertrip', we described as: Fast, furious, and freaking fun, Headcount's crossover sound will be very familiar to those who enjoy a bit of thrash and hardcore slammed together. Stompy and mean, the song's attitude might be aggressive in tone, but Headcount are inviting everyone into the pit to take part in a good old-fashioned stomp along. It's a hard request to deny as this track kicks all kinds of ass. The second single ‘Persistence' was just as good as we described that as: Momentum is building, the train is picking up speed, and destruction is inevitable. Headcount's latest single is a mean sounding track. Where hardcore intensity runs headfirst into a metallised ideology and an innate ability to be anthemic, even when heaviness is still front and centre. Headcount are mean, but you'll love them for it, especially when tracks like this are on offer. Now, as well as working on new music, the band has been busy building up their profile in the live environment, and it's the future that we focus on in this interview. As well as looking at how and why Headcount came about, their debut live show at The Dev in Camden, London, their ambitions, and so much more. On ‘Månen ska lysa din väg', the self-described dyster (gloomy) post-hardcore group cast a critical eye over the negative effects of Western colonialism, capital greed and convenience at the cost of sustainability, presenting a rallying cry for change whilst never losing sight of the light that this world has to offer. Formed in 2018, Svarta Havet - translated as “black sea” - were born from the Finnish DIY punk and hardcore scene, with the members bonding over a shared affinity for punk music and community-first ideals with a focus on antifascist, feminist, trans and queer politics. ‘Månen ska lysa din väg', translated in English as “The moon will light your way” and a direct quote from album track Göm dig, was recorded in January 2024 at Waiting Room Studio in Tampere, Finland, with producer Mikael Neves. Hailing from Nottingham, Those Once Loyal have been on quite the journey since last releasing music. One of the reasons being due to a revolving door of bassists, but this has now led to them finally having a solid line up. Since the release of their 2023 EP 'Relentless Cycle' they have played many shows around the Midlands area, something that has helped get their name out there and seem them play higher profile shows such as with Atreyu, Heart of a Coward, Attila, Rxptrs, High on Fire, Cane Hill and Kill the Lights. If all of this wasn't enough, they also landed a spot at the prestigious festival, Bloodstock Open Air, playing the Jägermeister stage in 2023. Now, they're back, and ready to unleash new music. Starting with a new single called ‘Glass Hands', out on April 11th, 2025, alongside a video. Glass Hands is a song that perfectly encapsulates the combination of modern hardcore bands with the driving aggressive riffs of 00's metalcore to create a song with a driving rhythm that blends both eras of metal together and shows how evolution and history can be one! Lyrically, the song uses themes of control and manipulation, to which lines such as "One day your influence will lose its hold. You'll never ever have control" Pertaining to the idea that egocentric control will lose its grasp in time. Released on April 11th, 2025, via InsideOutMusic, ‘From Nothing', is the highly anticipated sophomore album from experimental progressive metal band Benthos. An album that offers a profound reflection on the meaning of life while exploring positive and negative imprints left by mankind, and how they have shaped entire societies in various aspects - artistic, cultural, and social. It is the follow-up to their exceptional 2021 debut, ‘II', which we described as: A thoughtful and grown-up take on progressive metal. A challenging listen, but one that left an impact and put the band on the progressive map. This new album is something else entirely. Not from a challenging progressive standpoint, but rather the impact it will have. Benthos have poured years of experience, years of growth as individuals, and years of evolving as artists, into this new album, and it is incredible. We spoke to the band in 2021, and so much has happened since, so we finally caught up, and in this interview, we discussed all aspects of Benthos with guitarists Gabriele Papagni and Enrico Tripodi. From the growth of the past few years, the vision for this record, the creative ups and downs, to the upward trajectory of success the band is experiencing, the desire to get out and play live, and so much more. The nu metal revival is alive and well in 2025, so much so, that iconic bands from that era are returning to delight long-term fans, while gaining a whole new audience who have yet to experience them. One such band is Northamptonshire, UK's Defenestration. A five-piece who were active between 1999 – 2004, releasing three studio albums (One Inch God – 2001 / Ray Zero – 2003 / For Us it Ends When We Drown – 2004) and one split EP, (Year of the Slug with Scurge – 2002). Not only that, but they also toured all over the world with the likes of Raging Speedhorn, Napalm Death, Biffy Clyro, The Wildhearts, Skindred, and so many more iconic bands. So popular were they, that they opened the Wembley Arena leg of the 2001 'Tattoo the Planet Tour'. A set of shows that included Cradle of Filth, Static-X, Biohazard, Slayer and Pantera. Twenty years after their last live performance as Defenestration, the original members reunited for a ‘one-off' performance. Supporting Raging Speedhorn, the show was to raise money for record producer Russ Russell who was unable to work due to illness. This would be followed by another benefit gig for Russ Russell later in August 2024, Defenestration's first headline show since 2004. The itch was back, and another set of shows with Raging Speedhorn all but confirmed that there was a desire for Defenestration to return as an active band. Which is where we find ourselves now. Defenestration has reformed, is under new management, and is in the process of solidifying their legacy, while looking to the future too. This is what we discuss with vocalist Gen Tasker, getting excited about what the future might bring, while also spending plenty of time look back at their immense history too. ‘Aether' is the much-anticipated debut album of Forlorn, the ‘folk horror' band who blend expressionist art, crushing soundscapes and paganism to carve out their own brand of innovative alternative music. Throughout ‘Aether', Forlorn pay their respects to the major 'elements', acting as part of a progressing metal pagan ritual. The juxtaposition of ethereal vocals, with chaotic drums and crushing low-level guitars, paired with vocalist Megan Jenkin's brutal screams, bring together Forlorn's unique sound and visual identity. Their haunting live presence has also graced stages across the UK, alongside artists like Dying Wish, DESTRAGE, CRYPTA, Ithica, Devil Sold His Soul and URNE as well as festivals like at Radar Festival, Tech Fest and Collision Festival. Anyone who has seen Forlorn live can attest to the immersive experience it is, with us describing our first time seeing them in 2022 as: A 30-minute showcase of dreamy post-metal with the sharpness of hardcore, explosivity of metalcore and a touch of Midsommar-esqe eeriness. 2025 is looking to be the year they truly break out, and ‘Aether' will be released on March 28th, 2025, via Church Road Records. Obscure. Cutting. Beautiful. Like wind in the branches of a bitterly cold winter forest. In the quest for the perfect soundtrack for wistful, melancholic moments, get lost in the hypnotic undertow of broad walls of guitars, symphonic arrangements and experimental sounds, coated in an eerily-beautiful melodic monotony. Hjort is the solo-work of V/Haze Miasma‘s ‘Atmosphere‘ who utilises the studio project‘s freedom to create a unique sound experience using elaborate arrangements. Partly drawing from the realms of post-black metal, doom, progressive and symphonic music, while simultaneously denying to be categorized at all. The aesthetics of autumn and winter, forests and mountains are the visual keynote ofAtmosphere‘s work and thus distinctly perceptible in the music. ‘Evolve IV-VIII' is the logical progression of what was started by Hjort with ‘Trilogy I-III' in 2022. Freedomination is a metal band formed in Vantaa, Finland in 2008. Over the years, the band has released four self-published works and has become renowned for its energetic performances in the Finnish metal scene. After a period of inactivity since 2017, they returned to the stage in 2022 with a new lineup and have now released their debut album, 'Until the Lights Go Out'. Freedomination's music blends elements of thrash metal, progressive metal, traditional heavy metal, and punk rock. The band's musical influences are firmly rooted in old-school North American and British metal, though they deliberately avoid a “retro” sound. Instead, the focus is on timeless expression, and the band's sound is undeniably contemporary. UK extreme metallers Abduction will release their highly anticipated new album, Existentialismus, on 21st February 2025, via Candlelight. Following their explosive 2022 album, ‘Black Blood', which showcased the band's fiercely expansive sound, Abduction are now poised to push their musical boundaries even further. On the face of it, Existentialismus is actually a return to more stripped-down mechanics, and yet it is arguably the band's most electrifying, emotionally complex and personal recording to date. Extreme music has never sounded so appealing as it does on this new Abduction record. A band synonymous with bleak and black brutality, they continue to push the boundaries of metal with Existentialismus. Not only finding deeper and darker depths to explore but showcasing a more introspective soundscape. Conquer Divide have just revealed their latest single, ‘Bad Dreams' featuring Michigan metalcore heroes Of Virtue. The single comes ahead of their U.K. and European tour dates with Ankor from February 7th to March 16th. This, following their late January UK tour with New Years Day. The song combines Conquer Divide's ability to mix luscious and captivating vocals and hooks with their crushing intensity, both musically and lyrically, on this introspective slab of inner turmoil, which is complemented by Of Virtue's vocalists Tyler Ennis and Damon Tate's melodic turned raging contributions. A Deluxe Edition of their most recent album ‘Slow Burn' was released digitally on September 27th and featured an additional six recordings. About Slow Burn, we described it as: A statement making album, Conquer Divide are eyeing up big things in their future and have one hell of an album that will help push them upwards.
