Urzah Interview: Bigger & Bolder: Talking 'A Tranquil Void'

Play Episode Listen Later May 15, 2026 38:06

Bristol's progressive sludge quartet Urzah, are back with their much-anticipated sophomore album ‘A Tranquil Void'. It is the follow-up to their critically acclaimed debut album ‘The Scorching Gaze' (2024, APF Records). The band's sonic world draws on both the intensely personal – rage, loss, grief and self-doubt – and a profound awe and vulnerability in the face of the celestial and natural worlds, framing visceral human struggle within vast cycles of death, decay and rebirth. Conceptually, ‘The Scorching Gaze' and ‘A Tranquil Void' function as a visual, musical and thematic diptych; where their debut burned brightly with the rage and destruction of an erupting volcano, their new LP captures the cathartic, contemplative still that follows. Across 8 tracks, ‘A Tranquil Void' pushes Urzah's sound even further, combining brutal riffs, complicated meter and searing guitar tone with deeper explorations of space, dynamics and atmosphere, incorporating folk influences and drones built from cello and guitar. ‘A Tranquil Void' will be released on June 5th, 2026, via APF Records. Recorded at Stage 2 Studios, Bath, in November 2025, the LP was produced, mixed and mastered by Josh Gallop. Cello was provided by Luke Clemenger, with additional vocals from Dave Cook (Empire of Dust), Chris Wilson (Row of Ashes) and Victoria Bourne (The Spark's Desire). The album artwork was created by Indonesian artist Putra Satria Nugraha. To celebrate the release of their new album, Urzah are hosting a launch party at Exchange Bristol (main room) on Saturday 25th July with special guests HUNDRED YEAR OLD MAN, MOUNTAINSCAPE and DEAD SPACE CHAMBER MUSIC. Who on Earth Interview: Talking 'It Takes the Village' with Coosh (Vocals) and Pete (Bass)

Who On Earth cut its teeth through relentless gigging across the New York tri-state area, with founding members Coosh and Pete previously tearing up stages as MadHaus. During 2020, the longtime collaborators shifted focus from covers to original material, quickly writing ten songs and entering Sonic Stomp Studio with producer Mike Orlando (Category 7, Adrenaline Mob). Joined by drummer Joe D'Aqui, the group crafted a heavy, story-driven sound rooted in influences like Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Alice in Chains, and Tool. Despite pandemic delays, the sessions yielded their debut full-length album Blame', released in October 2022. Following the addition of guitarists Bruce Gatewood and Johnny James Barone, the band gained traction with a heavier reimagining of Toto's “Hold the Line,” now their most-streamed track. Lineup changes continued with drummer Howie Fallon joining in 2024, bringing renewed chemistry and power, though tragedy struck later that year with the passing of Gatewood. In late 2024, Jimmy Kocha joined, filling the role of co-lead guitarist, solidifying the lineup that is currently in full force today. Honoring his legacy, the band pushed forward, releasing the Smoke & Mirrors EP in March 2025—a sharp, socially reflective six-song release. Now the New Jersey hard rock/metal band, are back with their new album, ‘It Takes the Village', out May 8th, 2026. What good's a rock without a roll? It's a question that all head bangers should know the answer too, but if you're unsure, Who on Earth can tell you. It Takes the Village is a high-powered, energetic effort with heart and soul oozing from every aspect of it. They believe in what they do, and do it with aplomb, but they're also not afraid to experiment too. This is what gives many tracks a bit more of a metal edge. Chicago based metalcore band, VCTMS, return with their brand new EP, Pain Processing II set for release on the 1st of May independently. Often described as metalcore, or Nu Metalcore, VCTMS incorporate splashes of hip-hop, darkwave, industrial, post-hardcore and more into their sound defying genre boundaries. At their core though, no matter how experimental they get, they are angry, delivering devastating metal, hellbent on groovy, chaotic, blistering and depressive noise with lyrical content that ranges from introspection to homicidal. VCTMS deliver quite a mammoth EP here, with 7 tracks and around 24 minutes of music, getting them close to album length in some genres. An EP that feels relentless in both intent and execution, balancing sheer aggression with more than enough creativity to keep things engaging throughout. The guest spots add genuine value, while the band's own versatility gives the record real depth. It can feel overwhelming at times, but that chaos is part of the appeal. Ultimately, Pain Processing II is a heavy, modern release that hits hard, sticks with you, and shows there's more to VCTMS than just unfiltered brutality. Cork-based alternative rock trio, The Last Vinci, will release their new album '15 Minutes at a Time' on April 17th via Narrow Door Records. A powerful, deeply personal chronicle of resilience, transformation, and gratitude. At the heart of ‘15 Minutes at a Time' lies a phrase that frontman Alex Vinci never expected would change his life. Two years ago, after being diagnosed with a chronic illness just ten days before what he believed would be his final European tour, Alex's wife offered him simple, grounding advice: Take it 15 minutes at a time. Those words became a mantra, one that reshaped his creative voice, his view of the world, and ultimately, the soul of this new record. Supported by his family and six children, Alex embarked on a path of rediscovery, learning to live, work, and create in small, determined increments. ‘15 Minutes at a Time' captures the entirety of that journey: the before, the during, and the after. The album channels the fear, uncertainty, hope, and resilience that transformed a life-changing diagnosis into a profound source of meaning. In this interview, we dig into the mantra and how Alex has been able to make it intrinsic to his life and how it has inspired this new record. We also talk about the creative journey, the challenges, the joy of playing live, and so much more. Over half a decade on from the release of their debut album, 'The Smothering Arms of Mercy', Melbourne progressive-death outfit Growth have re-emerged with their sophomore album 'Under The Under', the first new music from the long-awaited second chapter of their planned trilogy aimed at going beyond expressing emotion, illustrating pathways of recovery while acknowledging the most dread-filled aspects of it. This second chapter is planned for release on March 27 via Wild Thing Records. The gap between releases has been deliberate….and necessary. Where 'The Smothering Arms of Mercy' was written from within collapse, sickness and isolation, 'Under the Under' exists in the far more uncomfortable space that follows: what happens when survival is no longer the question and you're forced to confront who you are once the wreckage settles. In the bands own words, healing, is not gentle. It is an ugly process. Chaotic, disorienting and often more confronting than the pain that preceded it. This is what we delve into with lead vocalist LF. Digging into the details of the album, the creative challenges, how it allows them to connect to people on a deeper level, and so much more. Perfectly capturing how they have become one of the most distinctive voices in the northern pagan metal scene. In this interview, we spoke to percussionist Nikita Kobcevs about the new album, the ups and downs of the creative journey, the desire to bring their live performance to everyone, and so much more. Uncultivates, the mathy post-hardcore group of riff-totin' cowboys from Southern (Ireland) Texas, will release their debut album, ‘This Will Become Clear Later, Like The French Revolution' on February 6th, 2026, via HORSEBOX Records. It's a miracle that Uncultivates have sobered up enough to get this release out, but here we are. When whiskey farming isn't bringing in the coin, and they've been able to see through the haze brought upon by strong liquor, they create music. Chaotic music that sits somewhere in the noise, post hardcore, and mathcore genres and is built on the bedrock of fun first. Don't take Uncultivates too seriously, they certainly aren't, but also don't let yourself believe that these buckaroos aren't a musically potent force. Trust me, come the end of this album, you'll be happier than a possum up a trouser leg. Damien Cain is an Ireland-based independent artist whose music blends melancholic alt-rock, gothic undertones, and a cinematic sense of storytelling. Active since the late 1980s, he first gained underground recognition with his progressive art-rock project Celtic Crypt and later with CAIN – whose 2000 single ‘Age of Darkness' sold over 250,000 copies and earned the Impala Diamond Award. Over the years, Cain has collaborated with artists ranging from Sir Christopher Lee to Wayne Hussey (The Mission), and developed a signature sound rooted in emotion, atmosphere and poetic darkness. Now living in Co. Laois, Ireland, Cain returns with his new album ‘Standarte', his most personal work to date. Mixed and mastered at Hellfire Studios in Dublin, the record brings together international musicians and explores the line between alt-rock, soft rock, darkwave, and melodic hard rock. ‘Standarte' marks both a continuation and a rebirth: three decades of stories carried forward into a new era. UK mathcore heavyweights Pupil Slicer third album, ‘Fleshwork', is out now via Prosthetic Records. A record that explores how society and the machinery behind it (political, financial etc.) dehumanises and devalues the most marginalised (the poor, disabled, queer, people of colour etc.) in a ‘sort of' conceptual way. Fleshwork is Pupil Slicer at their most visceral, at their most honest, and in their rawest state. Delivering some of their most intense music to date, but also their most compelling as their evolution reaches an impressive apex. Evolved, experimental, intense, and emotional sounding, the detail within Fleshwork is what ensures it will be long lasting, but alongside that are more accessible elements that give the band's sharp and complex mathcore edge a freshness. Check out our full review here: https://www.gbhbl.com/album-review-pupil-slicer-fleshwork-prosthetic-records/ At the end of November 2025, Pupil Slicer embarked on a co-headline tour of the UK with LLNN (Worn Out as support). An incredible show that confirmed them as one of the best bands in the UK today. Pupil Slicer are more confident than ever on stage and a lot of the new tracks allows a certain amount of ‘flair'. What we're seeing now is a performance, a more developed side to Pupil Slicer, and it's making them all the more watchable from a casual perspective. Not the hardcore lot though, they're far too busy pitting to the heavy mania to see anything happening on stage. A few hours before they hit the stage, I sat down (in The World's End) to chat with vocalist/guitarist Kate and bassist/backing vocalist Luke about the tour. Released on November 7th, 2025, Shatter & Bloom is Stellvris' explosive new EP, blending raw emotion, melody, and heaviness into a powerful statement of modern metal strength. Since forming in 2019, the European metal outfit have built their brand around honesty and emotional depth, exploring pain but also how to turn that pain into power. Here on their new EP, Shatter & Bloom, they deliver their most intense statement yet. We loved it. Describing it as: A high-energy, intense, and creative record. When you pack so many ideas, components, and genre switches into a release — and even within individual songs — there's always a risk of losing some listeners. But Stellvris manage to strike a balance, especially between the electronic elements and the more traditional instrumentation. What's clear is that this band has real talent: powerful rhythm work, strong guitar and bass tones, and a remarkably versatile vocalist. They know how to use those strengths intelligently, and the crisp production ensures every detail shines through. The result is a modern, ambitious, and fiercely engaging release from a band that looks set to achieve huge things. Read the full review here: https://www.gbhbl.com/ep-review-stellvris-shatter-bloom-self-released/ The EP has depth, and that is what we explore with vocalist Nicol Hofman. Digging into the detail of the EP, the journey to its release, evolving the Stellvris sound, what the future looks like, and so much more. How to take over the world – a Melrose Avenue story. It all just keeps getting bigger, doesn't it? The Sydney alt-rockers are absolutely soaring, selling out venues around the world, including every single date on their massive UK and European tour which began in London on November 13th. There, the band debuted their latest track, the achingly beautiful ‘This Is the End'. A track we described as: It really doesn't get more emotional than this, and so much of that emotion comes from the authenticity of it all. Just vocals and guitar, super simple, with all the focus being on Vlado's voice and words. It's beautiful, and having seen it performed live, it has even more power in that environment too. Yes, we were there for the London show, and you can read the review of that show here: https://www.gbhbl.com/live-review-melrose-avenue-at-the-dome-london-13-11-25/ The day before the show, the foursome were in London and we sat down with them to talk all things Melrose Avenue. The past, present, and future. For fun, we also challenged them with a special London-based quiz. Interview: In the Forest Singing Sorrowless - In Conversation with Joy Shannon

Joy Shannon is an Irish harpist and singer whose ethereal and haunting songs come from depths of Irish folklore. Her melodies evoke images of witch's lairs in dark woods or the distant echoes of the voices of spirits in the ancient places of the Irish countryside. Joy Shannon's newest album release In the Forest Singing Sorrowless' is inspired by author J.R.R. Tolkien's poetry, with Shannon's original music accompanying Tolkien's wonderful words. Shannon decided to create this album during a personally challenging year, when she went through medical treatments for breast cancer. Tolkien's works have always been an inspiration for Shannon, especially to have hope and purpose at the darkest times, so the recording of this album carried her through a difficult time. The resulting album is a mystical dream-walk through Tolkien's landscapes, through the magical lens of Shannon's intimate harp and vocals. This album, the story of its release, the journey that Joy Shannon has been on to make it a reality, the incredible collaborations, and so much more, is what we discuss in this interview. 2025 has been an incredible year for Iranian-Norwegian metallers Confess. Back in January, they released stunning new album, ‘Destination Addiction', which was produced by frontman Nikan Khosravi, mixed and mastered by Grammy-nominated Alberto De Icaza (Amon Amarth, Clutch, Miss May I, Dead Cross, Upon A Burning Body) and featured performances from extreme metal luminaries George Kollias (Nile) and Marzi Montazeri (ex-Phil Anselmo and Illegals, ex-Superjoint Ritual, ex-Exhorder, Heavy As Texas). Then, in September, the band had their story featured in a full episode as part of the HULU show ‘Into the Void: Life, Death & Heavy Metal'. Now, finishing the year off in style, the band are re-releasing their seminal second album ‘In Pursuit of Dreams' on November 7th, 2025. Seminal, because it was the last record they dropped while still in Iran, and in frontman Nikan Khosravi's own words has become: A lightning rod for rebellion, defiance, and unapologetic expression. This album, its importance, the decision to re-release it, and much more, is discussed in our interview with Nikan. Swedish rock heavyweights Smash Into Pieces are set to unleash their most ambitious album to date, ‘ArmaHeaven', arriving October 31st, 2025. Picking up where their previous album Ghost Code left off, the new chapter throws listeners into a dystopian future where Ghostis, now unstoppable, seizes control of the world. As the resistance falls, a new force emerges: an AI-driven entity that sparks an all-out digital war for dominance. The clash escalates into global catastrophe, exploring themes of power, survival, and rebirth. Will humanity find salvation, or will the machines consume themselves in a final great reset? Constantly setting rock trends, Smash into Pieces return with, arguably, their biggest record to date. Not only because it tells an elaborate story with exciting twists and turns, but because they express this story in anthemic fashion. Come for the rocking heaviness, melodic potency, and chorus-driven delights, but stay for the detail. That's a simple summation of ArmaHeaven.
