It was while working for Comedy Central that Cally Beaton had a chance conversation with the late, great Joan Rivers, then 81. Rivers inspired her to ditch the high-powered job as a TV exec and follow her dream. So it was that as a 45 year old single parent, Cally first took to the stage, quickly cementing her position as one of the most exciting and original new stand-ups in the UK. In this conversation with the deeply authentic Cally we talk about the breakdown she had in her mid forties and how she recovered from it. As she says, 'the coping strategies I'd used for the first 45 of my years weren't working so I had to find new ones.' We also analyse why she, like many women, finds it so hard to access her anger and the power of actually sitting with your emotions, no matter how hard it is. Cally's hit podcast show Namaste Motherfuckers brings together the worlds of self-help and business and deftly showcases her talent for connection and empathy. We get bucket loads of that here. We are all ageing, if we're lucky, so in this Woman's Hour special programme, we're exploring how women can age well. Anita Rani is joined by a panel of women of different ages to talk about the possibility of re-invention and the wisdom of age, as well as the difficulties and barriers women face as they get older. What we can learn from each other and how can women of different generations support each other? Author and psychologist, Dr Sharon Blackie's book, Hagitude: Reimagining the Second Half of Life, explores stories of little-known but powerful elder women in European myth and folklore – with the hope of inspiring women now. She joins Anita to discuss what we can learn from these stories and the power she feels we can gain if we embrace getting older. NHS GP Dr Radha Modgil is often to be found on BBC Radio 1's Life Hacks. Radha joins the discussion to explain the things we can do specifically to age well. She highlights exercise and nutrition, as well as the real need for women to have purpose in their lives, no matter what age they are and how that can impact our ageing both physically and mentally. Our reporter Martha Owen meets Lindi, Sue & Celia in the British Library in London, at a meeting for the Older Peoples Advisory Group – a forum for older community members – hosted by Age UK Camden. They give their thoughts on ageing, what they've enjoyed most about getting older and why dancing trumps housework. Cally Beaton was formerly a top TV exec, then she swapped the boardroom for the stage and became a comedian at the age of 45. Ten years later, she now refuses to make self-deprecating jokes in her sets. She joins Anita to discuss what it's like ageing in the public eye, defying her age and the importance of advice from older – and younger – women. The writer and content creator Pippa Stacey's perceptions of ageing have changed because of her experience of a chronic illness. Pippa was diagnosed with ME, also known as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, while she was at university. She joins Anita to reflect on the impact of the physical changes she has experienced, the pressures young women are under and why she wants to listen to older, and wiser, women. Join your host Brett Goldstein as he talks life, death, love and the universe with the incredible comic, writer, speaker and podcaster CALLY BEATON! Live at the Apollo star Esther Manito started performing stand up comedy only as recently as 2016 - not to forget we should probably count two years out because of the pandemic. The ex teacher has since brought two critically claimed solo shows (Crusade, #NotAllMen) to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and become the first female comedian to perform at Dubai Opera House.Describing herself as an "Essex Arab Girl Comedian", Esther is in her own words a chameleon of accents having grown up between mixed and sometimes clashing cultures and social classes. Between an Arabic-speaking Lebanese father and a Geordie mother who switched to a southern English accent at home, Esther nevertheless wears the badge of her distinct Essex accent with pride. This is the first episode to feature a distinct British regional accent. The Essex accent has an endearing nature but carries the social connotations of being thick and unsophiscated, best embodied by the all-time guilty pleasure reality TV show The Only Way is Essex.---------------------------------Follow Esther on Instagram or TwitterFollow your host Kuan-wen on Instagram or TwitterEsther's hilarious podcast with comedian Lily Phillips: Ghastly Women---------------------------------Esther started performing stand up comedy as a young mother after she just gave birth to her second child. Cally Beaton was working as a senior TV exec until she was 45, when the late great Joan Rivers told her she should try stand-up. So she did. Now a successful comedian – you'll have seen her on shows like QI and on The Apprentice You're Fired – Cally's nonetheless out to challenge the ageism she sees around her in the industry…an industry Cally admits she was a part of creating. She worked on MTV's The Real World, one of the first reality shows, back in the early 90s and then later on Geordie Shore and Ex on the Beach in previous life as a television executive. She says now: ‘It's fair to say I was a big part of the problem now biting me in the arse.' Here, we talk about: - Ageism - Profound change - Breaking down and building back up - The u-shaped happiness curve - Invisibility - Imposter-offs - Asking for help - …and how there's no prizes for styling it out For more of the brilliant Cally, check out her live dates http://callybeaton.com/ and follow her @callybeaton In this episode, I bang on about Robin Ince's books again. They're all brilliant (and he's interviewed in my latest book, How To Be Sad but the one I'm talking about here is I'm A Joke And So Are You – highly recommend!

Brilliant Cally Beaton swapped the boardroom for the green room, when Joan Rivers convinced her it wasn't too late to try comedy in her forties. From first class air travel, to long night-drives to open mics, she's been putting the hours in and is now reaping the rewards. We talk about why happiness is a U-shaped curve; how her polish enabled her to “hide” in the first part of her comedy career, and how she's even now unlearning her natural authority and discovering true vulnerability onstage.25 mins of extra content available exclusively to the Insiders Club includes Cally on a moment of stark realisation that it's OK to be flawed; on her part in bringing South Park to the world; and whether “Fuck ‘Em” is a useful mantra… Catch up with Cally:www.callybeaton.comIG: @callybeatoncomedianTW: @callybeatonCally's podcast:https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/namaste-motherfuckers/id1562113984Everything Stu's up to:This podcast is @ComComPod on Twitter and Instagramwww.comedianscomedian.comFind out everything Stu's up to at www.stuartgoldsmith.comStu offers remote and in-person talks to business, distilling insights from over 400 comics on cultivating resilience and the ability to bounce back, to all levels from C-suite to team members.“Stuart was brilliant; he nailed the brief, and the balance of meaningful content and humour was perfect for our audience.” Jo Matkin, CEO Celsus Group See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

This week Anna talks to comedian, writer, and podcaster, Cally Beaton, as she embarks on getting a new puppy. Anna has mentioned in the past what potential new pet parents need to consider before committing but in this episode Anna takes Cally step by step on what she need to be thinking about. Cally has now found a reputable breeder and is awaiting the birth of her puppy at the end of March. A life long animal lover and current cat owner, Cally's growing desire to get a puppy was confirmed when Anna was a guest on her podcast earlier this year. But as a working comedian and someone who travels a lot, there was a lot to think about first. Anna provides the answers all potential pet parents need to hear. With me today I have a comedian, business leader, writer and entrepreneur. She has held senior management positions at some of the biggest media companies in the world, including 10-years as Senior Vice President at the US studio giant Viacom, where she oversaw a multi-million-dollar budget for brands including Nickelodeon, MTV, Comedy Central and Paramount. While working for Comedy Central, on the road with the late, great Joan Rivers, she was nudged into the sphere of performance. On top of all this she holds a Masters in Neuro Linguistic Programming and has worked for many years, alongside her not inconsiderable day jobs, as a sought-after Executive Coach to the great and the good in industry, public life and politics. Please welcome comedian, writer and businesswoman Cally Beaton. Bio Cally Beaton is a comedian, writer, speaker and business mentor. Of the rising stars on the circuit today, few can boast the journey into comedy that Cally Beaton can. Cally is a natural storyteller full of intelligent, distinctive and punchline-rich material and her star is fast on the rise. She has held senior management positions at some of the biggest media companies in the world including MTV, UKTV and Viacom. Early in her career she headed an independent television production company that was bought by ITV’s Carlton Television (where a certain David Cameron was on the board). She left to set up a successful creative consultancy company and went on to do a 10-year stint as Senior Vice President at the US studio giant Viacom. There, Cally oversaw a multi-million-dollar budget for channels including Nickelodeon, MTV, Comedy Central and Paramount; if you want someone to blame for bringing South Park and SpongeBob SquarePants to the world, you need look no further. She has a Masters in Neuro Linguistic Programming and has worked for many years, alongside her not inconsiderable day jobs, as a sought-after Executive Coach to the great and the good in industry, public life and politics. It was while working for Comedy Central, on the road with the late, great Joan Rivers, that Cally was nudged into the sphere of performance. Acting as an unofficial business event warm-up for Ms. Rivers, it was she who told Cally she had what it took to be a stand-up and so, as a 45-year-old single parent, Cally first took to the stage. She quickly cemented her position as one of the most exciting and distinctive new stand-ups in the country, with her unflinching, acerbic and intelligent brand of comedy. She has appeared on BBC2’s QI multiple times and as a guest on Radio 4’s Museum of Curiosity, as well as BBC Radio 6 Music and as a regular contributor on BBC London. In 2019 Cally has appeared as an expert on BBC2’s The Apprentice You’re Fired, as well as a panelist on Radio 4’s The Unbelievable Truth with David Mitchell and BBC’s The Blame Game. Cally also writes for The Guardian. Her first foray to The Edinburgh Fringe in 2016 was a big success. Her show ‘Cat Call’, a double header with Catherine Bohart, received a Malcolm Hardee Award. She then followed up with her debut solo hour in 2017, ‘Super Cally Fragile Lipstick’. The show was a sell-out hit, receiving multiple 4**** reviews, national press coverage and picked as Best of Edinburgh Fringe by The Arts Desk. Cally built on this success with her hit Edinburgh 2019 show – ‘Invisible’ at The Assembly Rooms, which enjoyed numerous accolades and sell-out rooms. After multiple Finalist credits in competitions in the UK and the US, Cally went on to win the prestigious 2018 Piccadilly Comedy Club New Act of the Year competition, after being tipped as one of the comedians to watch for 2017 by Chortle. Drawing on her vast experience, eclectic life and unique wit, she is able to strike the perfect balance of smart, insightful, and entertaining. She is a gifted host and MC, with a natural ability to work a room, and gives sharp, inspirational and thought-provoking keynote and after-dinner speeches. Cally has a hard-won skill set few comedians can boast and has worked with – to name a few – Deutsche Bank, Sony Pictures, IMG, Endemol, Channel 4, Hat Trick, ScreenSkills, Women in Film & Television, UCL. PWC, Aviva, Sky Television, L’Oreal, Lloyds, Wella, Capgemini and Disneyland. In this episode I am talking to the comedian Cally Beaton – We discussed how Cally got into comedy – such an awesome story! How taking up space especially in a global pandemic is tricky, we are all in the arena with our sleeves rolled up getting muddy! Sharing dirty little secrets that aren’t dirty at all, they are most like everyday life for a lot of people and talking is a great way of blowing the lid off the shame. Along with chatting about menopause, we covered ground on how inspirational our grandparents are, lifting the lid on getting older, bodily functions, how young folk have probably got our backs more than we think, HRT and crisp packet femidoms! You will be in for a right treat there is a lot of wisdom shared in the next 40mins! Here are all the links we talked about and to finding more about what Cally is up to – comedy is opening up again so make sure you follow her socials to see where you can catch her gig. http://callybeaton.com/ https://soundcloud.com/user-575974822/ep-34-the-one-with-the-holiday-round-up-things-of-a-joys-celeriac-remoulade-and-cally-beaton https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/may/23/menopausal-50-hotter-20s-older-woman https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/aug/20/older-comedian-over-50s-ageism Curb your Enthusiasm Clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0bilaSB_tAE www.thewellwomanproject.com Socials www.facebook.com/thewellwomanproject www.instagram.com/well_woman_project/ www.youtube.com/channel/UCd4zFxAPAGlxfDVshT7PRNg Intro music www.purple-planet.com/

In this conversation I chat to Cally Beaton, a stand-up comedian, writer, public speaker and executive coach (http://callybeaton.com).Cally worked as a TV executive at MTV, UKTV and Viacom as a Senior Vice President, where she was responsible for shows including South Park. Cally is also a Master Practitioner in Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP*), and a fully qualified coach with a successful private coaching practice, Road Trip Media. For her solo show at the 2017 Edinburgh Fringe, Super Cally Fragile Lipstick, Cally received further 4 star reviews and won the Piccadilly Comedy Club "New Comedian Of The Year" 2017/8. Cally explains why she left her job as Vice President of Viacom, to pursue her career in public speaking and stand up comedy. She says that when reinventing yourself you can upsize rather than downsize, no matter what age you are. Cally explains why everyone who wants to perform should do their stint as a barista, or equivalent, in terms of a developing a work ethic. How marketing TV shows has given her instinct on how to market herself as a comedian and why perception is everything.Cally also breaksdown what NLP is and how her curiosity of people and the world led her to study it and the impact it’s had on her. Why she writes projects at the last minute and why it’s so important to turn up everyday, even when you’re not feeling creatively inspired. She tells the story of how a group of working builders inspired Seinfeld to stick with his stand up career, at the point he was thinking of giving up. We talk about our addictions to our phone's and Cally describes her experiences of the Hoffman process, a retreat where she was cut off from all technology for a week.Cally describes the experience of juggling being a single mother of two, with working full time and then becoming a stand up comedian. She breakdown the Eisenhower matrix and how she applies it to her time management and why time spent on the wrong thing, blocks you from allowing the right things or opportunities into your life. She talks about her debut Edinburgh Fringe Fesrival experience and the transition from being a TV exec, that everyone wanted at their party, to being a comedian that’s not getting to the same level of attention. We also discuss the struggle of dealing with Edinburgh Fringe, both emotionally and mentally. In honour of International Women’s Day on Sunday, I filled the entire show this week with some of the most inspiring/awesome women I’ve had the pleasure of meeting and interviewing on Phoenix FM. On this week’s One2Three show we talked to some amazing women from all walks of life; comedians, rockstars and former chicken farmers all had their own inspiring message to share from confronting “invisibility” and surrounding yourself with people you love to recognising breast implant illness, ageing gracefully and tackling adversity. Ben and Barry, with help from some of their dutiful Twitter followers, have been digging out some of their favourite moments from Worst Foot Forward in 2019 and here they are in all their glory. Savour again delights such as a chorus of vaginas, the invasion of Sark by a single Frenchman, how Joan Rivers changed Cally Beaton's life, the saint who suckles at a deer's teet and the maddest ten minutes of your life as we lose our minds over toad sex. I caught up with this year's MC at Standon Calling, the very funny and very visable Cally Beaton. We talked about what it's like to compere the comedy stage at a festival, dealing with kids in comedy, being a part of QI and her new Edinburgh Fringe show "Invisible". CALLY BEATON is a comedian that I was so excited to talk with! A natural storyteller full of intelligent, distinctive and punchline-rich material, she is currently on top form with an Edinburgh Fringe show already creating a buzz during preview season. Coming to the craft later than most, Cally has an extra dimension to her material and writing and a unique voice on the circuit. During the podcast we cover this along with the theme of her new Edfringe show, the menopause, aging, ambition, balancing a high powered and successful career with creativity, the legend of standup that inspired her to take the leap, comedy and the circuit. It really is a joyous episode, covering some serious topics, but packed to the rafters with joviality...plus baby makes her 2nd ever guest appearance on the podcast! Martine McCutcheon, real life east ender, became famous as a TV Eastender in the 90s playing Tiffany, on off love interest for hi-maintenance Grant Mitchell, until she was squished by Frank Butcher outside the Queen Vic on Christmas Eve. She reinvented herself as a pop star - having a Perfect Moment in 1999 with the chart topping song of that name - and then another perfect moment co-starring with Hugh Grant in the Richard Curtis romcom, Love Actually. Off screen life, however, was complicated and after an award winning but stormy run in My Fair Lady in the West End, things went Pete Tong. Illness, bankruptcy, time to regroup - but now, fighting fit, she's back with a new album. When Benjamin Mee's dad died, he persuaded his mum to buy a zoo so that the whole family could live together. Of course it wasn't as easy as that - there were plenty of challenges along the way. But his story was made into a film starring Matt Damon in 2013. With the thank you slot, when we offer you the opportunity to thank someone for a good deed done by left unthanked, we're especially delighted on the rare occasion when a thanker is reunited with a thankee. But, people of Britain, today we reunite two of them live in the studio. Rabia Dignam and Sir Harold Walker, who met in a crowded and extremely tense Baghdad airport during the Iraqi Invasion of 1990. There's not much Gabe Cook doesn't know about cider. He's made cider for big name companies and small breweries. He's done the PR for the UK cider industry. And now he is his own man - a ciderologist and Britain's first 'pommelier'. The adorable and thoroughly cherished Roy Hudd was on Saturday Live a while ago with tales of his six decades in showbiz. He started as a redcoat, has appeared in everything from panto to Broadchurch, presented the News Huddlines here on Radio Four for a quarter of a century, and is today a custodian of anecdotes to the platinum standard of Ned Sherrin. Heritage on legs, people, and we thought we'd be unforgivably remiss if we didn't get him to surrender his Inheritance Tracks. Cally Beaton has done alright. She worked her way up to senior Vice President at the media company Viacom International. Then inexplicably at the age of 45 she decided to get into stand-up comedy. Her show Super Cally Fragile Lipstick will be in Edinburgh from August 5th And as you know we always want to hear from you - the listener. This week's Call Out is asking 'what unusual job do you do and how did you get into it'? In fact do you have such an unusual job most people wouldn't even know it exists? We have heard of people who are professional mourners. One person even told us they had a job as a professional 'cuddler'. We want to hear from you.
