If a very handsome and friendly young veteran named David visited your home one afternoon with a warm smile and some very kind words about your son whom he served with overseas....wouldn't YOU invite him over to stay? That's the main question which kicks off this lean, mean horror thriller directed by aspiring genre master Adam Wingard (You're Next, Godzilla Vs Kong) and starring Dan Stevens (Downton Abbey, Cuckoo) AS David, the titular guest. It was released ten years ago to much acclaim and minimal box office but has become something of a cult phenomenon via cable, streaming, and physical media since then. Also co-starring is modern Scream Queen herself, Maika Monroe (It Follows, Longlegs) as Anna the older teenage daughter of the Peterson family which David stays with. The rest of the family are played by Leland Orser, Sheila Kelly, and Brendan Meyer....and they all start to really like having David around including Anna. But eventually she starts to suspect that all is NOT as it seems with regards to David....he might be hiding some secrets, some potentially VIOLENT secrets. :o And what results is an unforgettable ride sprinkled with throwback vibes to genre classics from the '70's and '80's including a catchy synth soundtrack!Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

After the failure that was the Tom Cruise The Mummy, Blumhouse takes a shot at a low budget take on one of the classic monsters. The Guest was a movie that I was longing to see and always seemed to miss it when it was streaming. This year however the stars finally aligned and The Guest hit Netflix just when I needed it most. "A soldier introduces himself to the Peterson family, claiming to be a friend of their son who died in action. After the young man is welcomed into their home, a series of accidental deaths seem to be connected to his presence." MEN!...
On this week's show we get down to the business of discussing some movies we've actually seen! Leading the pack would have to be Adam Wingard's The Guest, which is a glorious homage to the ultra-violence of 80s cinema. We also share our thoughts on the latest iteration of the Liam Neeson 'Taken' franchise, the PR spectacle that was 'The Interview' and the final installment of Peter Jackson's Hobbit trilogy. In this week's jam packed episode we talk about Kevin Smith's absurd spectacle Tusk and why you should see it. Then we all go gaga over Dan Stevens' dreamy performance in the new retro thriller The Guest. Dave went and saw The Maze Runner and ended up enjoying himself (for the most part). Of course, all of these good vibes are flushed down the toilet when it comes time to tackle the third film in our David Cronenberg retrospective: eXistenZ. The film ends up being just as terrible as its title's spelling and we give it a well deserved beating. As always, we end the show with our Weekly Movie Recommendations and manage to pull out of the nosedive that is eXistenZ. 02:07- Tusk 13:58 -The Guest 24:33 - The Maze Runner 32:06 - David Cronenberg's eXistenZ 1:03:00 - Weekly Movie Recommendations
