Today's episode features a very special guest. Comic book writer/artist Tim Seeley comes on the show to discuss one of the forgotten DC Comics films Jonah Hex. It's been a little while since the last episode. I took a break due to the birth of my first child! The show is back and guest Seth Decker returns to take a look at the sequel to the Ridley Scott Alien prequel Prometheus. This time we are looking at Alien: Covenant and shining a light on what may be a flawed film, but still manages to succeed as a Sci-Fi epic. Well with this episode we have officially reached the last episode of the year. Director Denis Villeneuve os already known as a powerhouse director with movies like Dune and Arrival under his belt, but one of his earlier movies often feels overlooked. Generally loved by most who have seen it, Prisoners just doesn't seem like it reached the huge audience it deserved. Today I sit down with former guest Brandon Prosek as we look at one of Denis Villeneuve's hidden crime masterpieces Prisoners. The MCU at this point is so big that no ones list of their favorites looks the same. However I am willing to bet that in most people's list Thor: The Dark World is somewhere near the bottom. I personally never agreed with that opinion and for the first time I have two guests on the show who feel the same. Returning guest Seth Decker and Aerin Moriarty hop on the show to give a retrospective look on this maligned sequel and discuss how it may be perceived differently after Loki received his own Disney Plus series. Slasher movies have never really been my jam. They always felt predictable and repetitive so I mostly avoided them. There were some stands outs like Scream but for the most part its a blank space in my film history. Today's episode sets out to correct that as J.D. Martin convinced me to watch one of the more interesting films in one of the bigger slasher franchises. Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives. This was a major turning point for the Friday franchise and one of the many I had never seen from this franchise. J.D. puts the movie in a perspective that I can relate to as he tries to convince me that slashers can in fact be awesome. J.D. also has two podcasts of his own, Comics Quest and Fables and Reflections. Well it's the holiday season and everyone has Spider-Man on the brain! With Marvel looking to drop it's biggest Spider-Man movie yet this week, I decided to take a look back at the LAST time there was a third Spider-Man movie. The Sam Raimi, Toby Maguire starring Spider-Man 3. Before Andrew Garfield donned the mask, and before sequels weren't allowed to have numbers anymore, Spider-Man 3 was once the most expensive movie ever made with the most "meh" reception. So today I sit down with guest Trayvon Mack as we discuss Spider-Man 3's lackluster approval at the time, and how it may be perceived now. Well it was inevitable that a Star Wars movie would show up at some point. Star Wars fandom is certainly one that can be all over the place, but every era has it's fans. However with this entry we step outside of the numbered films and take a look at what I consider to be the most under appreciated Star Wars film, Solo: A Star Wars Story. While not a perfect film I think Solo is one that gets better every time I watch it. Returning guest Allen Kesinger brings his Star Wars love to the conversation as we determine if Solo is a good movie, or just a cash grab. The mid 2000s was an interesting time in film. I feel there was a lot of different things being attempted during that era a lot of the movies come out kind of hit and miss. Without A Paddle is a movie I didn't think much about when it came out. I watched it, I enjoyed it, I moved on. Today I sit down with guest Nic Woolfe as we revist this 2000s comedy with a stellar cast and see if it's better than we remember or just another forgotten film. Paul Verhoeven is maybe the king of the cult classic, and Starship Troopers is perhaps the most self aware of his blockbusters. A movie that was misunderstood when it was released, it later gained a large cult following that was strong enough to spawn multiple sequels, video games, and even animated movies. Today I sit down with Victor Grubbs as we discuss the one of the best cult classics of all time. Do you want to learn more? Then give it a listen! So this was something that has been in the works four a couple years now. During the run of my previous podcast a friend of mine, and former guest Brandon Prosek, wrote and produced a play called How Does That Make You Feel? Well this is easily the closest we have ever covered a movie to it's release date but with the timing of the holiday and the very divisive response to this movie it was honestly begging to be talked about. On this special Halloween episode I dragged Chris Chipman away from one of his many other projects to talk about the newest entry in the slasher franchise, Halloween Kills. Halloween 2018 was a massive success and universally loved, but the reception for it's sequel seems to be all over the place so we dive in and try to figure out why that it is and discuss how we feel about the film. Well it's the final bookend of Bond month for the release of No Time to Die. This week I once again sit down with Allen Kesinger to discuss Diamonds Are Forever, Connery's last offical Bond film for Eon Productions. Diamonds Are Forever is certainly a Bond movie with a split audience and while my intial viewing had me firmly landing on the "love it" side Allen's first viewing was more opposite that. Today we sit down and hash it out to see if Diamonds Are Forever is one to be remembered or forgotten. Don't forget to use promo code DEFENDING at The Cryptic Closet for 21% off your order. Today's episode features another returning guest. This week Aerin Moriarty comes back on the pod to talk about a mostly forgotten parody movie of the late 80s. This week we are talking The Pirate Movie. While it most certainly isn't Mel Brooks, The Pirate Movie is a film that seems to have a loving fan base, and Aerin shares that love. While serving as a comedic take on Pirates of Penzance, it's also a pretty forward thinking movie for it's time. Also there are Star Wars references. Nostalgia has always been a driving force of the film industry. Over the last decade we saw a lot of movies harkening back tothe 80s but come the last few years we have seen a big resurgence of the 90s. 2017's Power Rangers always felt like the true start of 90s nostalgia for me, but maybe that's just because it was the first one that really spoke to me. When I first saw this movie in theaters I liked it, but with every viewing since I have come to absolutely love this film. This feeling is shared by todays guest Alberto Lara (Scrump) the host of the PWT Cast. Today we talk this seminal reboot of the classic 90s television show but we also dive into the Power Rangers franchise overall, as well as talk major genre films. So personally, I am a massive James Bond fan, however about three years ago that wasn't the case. I was a more passive fan who hadn't even seen all of the movies. I decided to change that and marathon all of the movies in a row. While I was doing that I was blogging my experience with each film. Well former guest and friend of the show Allen Kesinger is also a massive Bond fan and was following the blogs closely and we ended up coming to an disagreement. We each like a movie that the other wasn't really fond of. Well the new Bond movie, No Time to Die, finally releases this month so I thought we would bookmark this month with dual Bond movies. We will watch and discuss the two movies that we couldn't agree on and re-evaluate them. This first episode covers the fifth movie of the franchise, Thunderball. This was one of my least favorite Bond movies, but will a re-watch change my mind? Don't forget to use promo code DEFENDING at The Cryptic Closet for 21% off your order. Member of Montressor Media Jesse Fresco knows a indulgent action flick can be a good time so we sat down to talk about this low key but balls to the wall gun fight buffet staring Clive Owen. I have met very few people in my life that wouldn't agree that the film Tremors is a perfect movie. Kevin Bacon is now a huge star but to this day Tremors is still one of the movies people mention him for. However, does anyone think of the sequels fondly? Well my guest today Nick Almendarez is maybe the biggest Tremors fan I've ever known. He goes hard on every movie in the franchise. When I started this podcast I knew 100% that we would be covering probably all of these movies, so naturally we started with the most recent release on Netflix, Shrieker Island. Today's film defense is on a movie that has always been on my list of movies to watch. Unfortunately I just never got around to it until now. My guest today, Paresh Maharaj has a special love for this film that speaks to his career as a lawyer. A year or two ago there seemed to be a couple film discussions cropping up on social media basically saying "X film wasn't as good as you remember from your childhood." One of these films was the Steven Spielberg Peter Pan adaptation Hook. A movie that serves as a quasi-sequel to the old Disney animated film, Hook has kind of taken on a new perspective in recent years. Was this film as good as we remember or is it just a bad movie that went over our heads as children? Today I am joined by Seth Decker to find out. Seth is another member of the Montressor Media group and co-founder and host of the Film Rescue show. We sit down to determine if Hook is one of Spielberg's best, worst, or something in between. This is the first episode to make the case that not all underrated films are considered bad. Some popular movies just come, leave an impact, and then fade away over time. As is the case with this weeks guest Aerin Moriarty. Pride & Prejudice was a big hit in it's day but it's not a movie you hear much about in 2021, but that doesn't mean the love for the film has faded amongst it's fans. Aerin comes on the show to discuss the points of the way movies advertising can affect it's target audience and how perceptions of a genre can lead to misconceptions of enjoyment. Aerin is also the host of the Palette Cleanser Podcast and part of the Montressor Media family of entertainment. This podcast was made for movies like Josie and the Pussycats. Released in 2001 this is maybe one of the most misunderstood movies of the era, but for every misunderstood movie there are always the people who champion it. This movie has such a big fan that they wrote a book about it! Today's guest is Russ Burlingame who works as an entertainment writer for comicbook.com. He fell in love with Josie and the Pussycats and took it upon himself to write a book on the film, covering it's development similar to how movies are covered in the modern era of film making. Whenever anyone asks me what my favorite comedy is, the first movie that is ever going to pop into my head is Clue. It may sound weird to think of a board game based film but Clue is bar none one of my favorite movies of all time. Luckily I know someone who feels the same! I sat down this week with a good friend of mine Allen Kesinger as we dissect and gush about maybe one of the most quotable movies of all time. We do our best to try and not recite the whole movie! Hello everyone and welcome to our first Defense of an actual film! When I started my last podcast, the movie that gave me the idea was Prometheus. I read the original leaked script (Alien Engineers) and that was the inception of the Shelved Film Podcast, so for me when putting this show together I felt it was appropriate that this would be the first film that I cover. Now normally my guest will be picking the movie but occasionally I will pick a film that I want to cover so this time I sat down with Jesse Ferguson and it was actually the first time they had seen the film. It lead to some interesting discussion about a movie that I really enjoy that comes with a sort of stigma. Welcome to the first official episode of Defending Your Movie. Now today's episode is a little different because we aren't actually talking about a movie. This is a chat with current Giant Bomb employee Matthew Rorie about his former job as one of the founding members of Screened. Screened was a film website that I was a major fan of and deep in the community. Defending Your Movie as a podcast is an homage to a video feature that started on Screened. For me, doing this podcast right meant having someone on who ran the site as a way to thank them and pay tribute to the content that they made which I hope to keep alive. Rorie was kind enough to come on the show and talk about his time on Screened and how it was kind of a fly by the seat of your pants operation. We also get into some fun movie chat in the back half. We will be getting to movies starting with episode 2 but for now I hope you enjoy this trip down memory lane about a little movie website that could! Well it's a movie story unlike that which we've never seen before. Of course I mean more of the behind the scenes than the actual movie. The Alien series is one of my favorite movie franchises of all time. Alien 3 is probably one of the more divisive films of the original three. It's on record how difficult the development of this movie was and how there were many different variations of the script. On today's episode we look at the most popular one by the father of cyberpunk, William Gibson. This script has been officially released as both a audio book and comic. Today is a look at the comic book version of Gibson's take on the famed creature feature. I'm a massive Alfred Hitchcock fan and Psycho is one of my favorite films. The idea of making a sequel to that classic film twenty some odd years later is a fascinating concept to me. Does this much later sequel hold a candle to the original? It's hard to cover a whole month of horror films and not review at least one zombie movie. A short film turned into a whole feature, Cargo at least takes a unique spin on the genre. This honestly may be one of my favorite episodes of the podcast. Today I sat down with comic writer Joe Khachadurian (Identity Stunt) as we discuss the Image comics release of Kevin Smith's script turned comic for The Green Hornet. Written by Smith originally for a movie that was never made, the script was eventually revived and transformed into a comic book. Today we talk about that comic book and what movie we could have gotten, and compare it to the Seth Rogen movie we eventually did get. Written By: Kevin Smith Logline: Following the death of his father, Britt Reid, heir to his father's large company, teams up with his late dad's assistant Kato to become a masked crime fighting team. Towards the end of 2017 a short video dropped onto the internet that got Resident Evil fans a buzz. The short was called Dave and it was described as being a pitch for a Resident Evil television show called Arklay. Today I sit down with one of the creators of the short Shawn Lebert. We talk about the making of the film and what the original hopes and plans were for a Resident Evil television show. We also discuss where he is and what he's doing today. The short can be watched here - https://vimeo.com/239290092 We have merch now! Today's episode is one that I am really proud of. Long ago a movie website called Screened used to do a feature called Defending Your Movie. I used to love the feature and when the website ended I missed it a lot. So I decided to revive the idea on my podcast. I even reached out and got the original creators' permission. So this is our first attempt at doing just that. My good friend Adam Condra came on to talk about a movie that we both have a fondness for, 2012'2 Lockout starring Guy Pearce. We have merch now! Today is a very special interview episode with our first film director. Dwight Little is most known for directing the sequel Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers, but he's had a fascinating career. We talk about his early days of getting into film all the way up to the reason I wanted to talk to him in the first place, directing the Tekken movie. We also discuss his time working with Brandon Lee and Steven Seagal. We are now on Patreon! Well the show is officially back! After a long hiatus the first new episode is looking at a script I've been wanting to read for a long time now. Based on my all time favorite video game series, today we are looking at the script for the reboot of the Mortal Kombat film. There's a lot of new stuff to talk about at the beginning of the show and the future but I hope you enjoy the first episode back! So I wasn't sure if I wanted to cover this or not as I've had a personal rule for the podcast from the beginning. I generally strayed away from scripts that I couldn't be 100% sure were authentic but in the end its impossible to be 100% sure if ANY of the scripts covered are authentic so I figured that this was at least worth covering. On the last episode I sat down with a guest and we discussed the leaked bullet points from the alleged Star Wars script. Well that was going to be that but the next day when I was editing the episode I saw that the full script had leaked out. Well I didn't want to drag Nick back to re-record so I decided to go through the script and dive into the details in this more thorough look at the Duel of Fates script. The Star Wars sequel trilogy has been a divisive series to say the least but most people seem to agree that The Rise of Skywalker felt more like fan service than a Last Jedi sequel. The question now is would the Trevorrow version have made any difference? I generally strayed away from scripts that I couldn't be 100% sure were authentic but in the end its impossible to be 100% sure if ANY of the scripts covered are authentic so I figured that this was at least worth covering. So allegedly a Reddit use got their hands on an early Episode IX script written by Colin Trevorrow before he was no longer attached to the project. Now apparently it has been independently verified which is what makes covering this feel okay to me. There was also some concept art out there that Trevorrow confirmed were from his version. Well this is maybe the most excited I've ever been for an episode to drop. Today's guest is David Hayter. Video game fans will know him as the voice actor of Solid Snake from the Metal Gear franchise., Fans of screenwriting and comic book movies may know him as the writer of major comic book films such as X-Men, X-2, and Watchmen, the latter of which brings us together today. We discuss David's contributions to the comic book movie genre as a whole while we follow his path from writing the first draft of Watchmen and the journey it took to the big screen while clearing up some rumors along the way. He also doesn't shy away from throwing a little shade. David can be found on Twitter. David has a show on Netflix in 2020 called Warrior Nun. We are now on Patreon! Well I've been in a work coma since Thanksgiving that isn't ending anytime before Christmas. There's one new episode coming for the rest of the year which will be an interview with a very special guest (Next week and you're not going to want to miss this!) This will also be the last repost of the year but I thought I would squeeze one more in while I'm working over 60 hours for the next couple weeks. ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION In 2009 Dragon Ball Evolution was barfed into cinemas to a much maligned response. It threw away everything that everyone knew and loved about the show and instead presented the most bare bones and boring interpretation of the classic anime/manga. Well little did we know the script to the movie was actually much close to the source material so I brought in my buddy and fellow Dragon Ball fanatic Nick Almendarez, professional wrestler and founder of Freelance Wrestling in Chicago, do discuss the Dragon Ball movie that could have been. Well we are getting ever closer to Star Wars Episode IX The Rise of Skywalker which is a perfect time to revisit the third episode of the podcast when we looked at George Lucas's original rough draft simply called The Star Wars. ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION This week Jeremy says the correct email address for the first time as he gathers with his fellow Star Wars geek Maggie to discuss George Lucas’s original rough draft for The Star Wars. This is quite an interesting read that is a must for any Star Wars fan that may have heard the stories but doesn’t know the details. Jeremy and Maggie dive deep into the mind of George Lucas and try to figure out how George Lucas went from this draft, to the Star Wars trilogy we all know and love today. We are now on Patreon! Today's episode is going to be a little different. An early draft of the Joker script leaked out but honestly there aren't a ton of differences between the script and the final film. There are enough to merit discussion but not enough to fill a whole episode so instead this episode is going to be split in two. The first part will discuss the differences between the script and film and the second half will be a review of the final film. Written By: Todd Phillips and Scott Silver Logline: In Gotham City, mentally-troubled comedian Arthur Fleck is disregarded and mistreated by society. He then embarks on a downward spiral of revolution and bloody crime. This path brings him face-to-face with his alter-ego: "The Joker". We are now on Patreon! So while browsing the podcast feed on Apple Podcasts I noticed that a lot of older episodes are cycling out of the feed. I've decided to start re-posting older episodes on off weeks with no new episode so if you want to go back and listen to them you have the option. I already re-posted the first episode a while back so I'm jumping into the second one which works out because it keeps in the Resident Evil theme. Our second episode looked at the George Romero Resident Evil script. Enjoy. ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION Well we made it to a second episode! It's officially a podcast. This episode is timed with the release of the new Resident Evil movie in theaters. Resident Evil The Final Chapter. A film series that has spanned 14 years and made hundreds of millions of dollars worldwide, but has always been met with tepid response. Before the series launched, George Romero, the zombie king, turned in a draft to Capcom in 1998 that they then shot down. I sat down with my horror obsessed friend Vinny Malave to discuss this rejected take on the classic franchise. We are now on Patreon! Happy Halloween everyone! Today is a special bonus episode and our third Resident Evil script of the month. I have a complicated relationship with this series of films and this one is maybe my most conflicted of the bunch, and therefore was the one I was most excited to cover. I hope you enjoy this mid week bonus episode as I discuss Resident Evil Afterlife. Written By: Paul W. S. Anderson Logline: While still out to destroy the evil Umbrella Corporation, Alice joins a group of survivors living in a prison surrounded by the infected who also want to relocate to the mysterious but supposedly unharmed safe haven known only as Arcadia.
