Shrouded in Desire: Cronenberg, Dixon & the Art of Grief

Face2Face with David Peck

Play Episode Listen Later May 9, 2025 38:42

On this episode of Face2Face, David Peck sits down with legendary filmmaker David Cronenberg and acclaimed costume designer Anne Dixon to explore their haunting new film The Shrouds. We dive into grief, storytelling, and the power of collaboration—from Dixon's sculptural approach to costume design to Cronenberg's reflections on love, loss, and existentialism. It's a layered, philosophical conversation about death, creativity, and connection—and one that turns costume and character into deeply human art forms.Synopsis:In The Shrouds, visionary filmmaker David Cronenberg delivers one of his most personal and provocative works to date. The film follows Karsh (Vincent Cassel), a grieving tech entrepreneur who, after the death of his wife Becca (Diane Kruger), develops GraveTech—a revolutionary system that allows mourners to monitor the real-time decomposition of their loved ones via high-tech burial shrouds and smartphone apps.Set in a near-future Toronto, the narrative unfolds as Karsh's creation becomes the center of controversy and intrigue. When several graves, including Becca's, are vandalized, Karsh embarks on a journey to uncover the perpetrators, delving into a web of conspiracies that blur the lines between technology, grief, and obsession. Drawing inspiration from Cronenberg's own experience with loss, The Shrouds is a meditation on mourning, the human desire for connection beyond death, and the unsettling intersections of technology and emotion. With its haunting visuals, a synth-heavy score by longtime collaborator Howard Shore, and a narrative that challenges perceptions of reality and memory, the film stands as a testament to Cronenberg's enduring exploration of the human condition.David Cronenberg is one of Canada's most influential and daring filmmakers, renowned for pushing the boundaries of cinema. Often dubbed the “Baron of Blood,” his work explores the dark intersections of technology, the body, and psychological trauma. From cult classics like Videodrome and The Fly to award-winning dramas like A History of Violence and Eastern Promises, Cronenberg has consistently challenged audiences with his provocative storytelling and signature style. With The Shrouds, he turns inward, crafting a deeply personal meditation on grief and connection, once again proving that he remains one of cinema's most fearless auteurs.Anne Dixon is a celebrated costume designer whose work spans film, television, opera, and dance, bringing characters to life through meticulous research and a deep understanding of visual storytelling. Her recent collaboration with Viggo Mortensen on The Dead Don't Hurt showcases her commitment to authenticity, as she recreated 19th-century attire with precision, even commissioning traditional ceinture fléchée belts from Quebec artisans to reflect the film's French-Canadian roots.Dixon's diverse portfolio includes projects like The Song of Names, Falling, and Anne with an E, earning her accolades such as the CAFTCAD Award and multiple Canadian Screen Award nominations. Her designs are known for their emotional depth and historical accuracy, making her a sought-after talent in the industry.F2F Music and Image Copyright: David Peck and Face2Face.For more information about David Peck please visit his site here. With thanks to Josh Snethlage and Mixed Media Sound. In this episode of Comic Stripped, Evan Bevins and Mark Radulich take a deep dive into A History of Violence, comparing the 1997 graphic novel written by John Wagner (Judge Dredd) and illustrated by Vince Locke (Deadworld), with the 2005 film adaptation directed by David Cronenberg. Originally published by Paradox Press, an imprint of DC Comics, the graphic novel is a gritty, pulp-inspired crime thriller following Tom McKenna, a small-town diner owner whose violent past resurfaces after he thwarts a robbery and is outed as a former mob hitman. Wagner and Locke craft a tense, noir narrative grounded in bloody realism and identity crisis. The film adaptation stars Viggo Mortensen as Tom Stall, with Maria Bello, Ed Harris, and William Hurt rounding out a powerhouse cast. Screenwriter Josh Olson reworks the core premise, shifting the story's focus from pulpy crime fiction to psychological drama. Cronenberg transforms Wagner's narrative into a meditation on suppressed violence and the duality of human nature, anchored by Mortensen's haunting performance. The panel discusses how Cronenberg stripped down the original's mob-heavy plotting to explore more intimate moral dilemmas — particularly the effect of Tom's hidden past on his family and his sense of self.Evan and Mark also examine how both versions tackle themes of redemption, guilt, and identity, as well as the differing narrative choices — from Locke's visceral, sketchy art style to Cronenberg's cold, calculated visuals. They consider the cultural contexts of both releases, the adaptation's critical acclaim (including Academy Award nominations for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor for William Hurt), and whether either version offers a more definitive take on the cost of violence. Tune in for an in-depth comic-to-screen breakdown with sharp analysis, biting humor, and a respect for storytelling craft across mediums.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59

This week, Gene HackMarch continues with an outstanding acting showdown between two of the all-time greats of American screen acting, as our man Gene stands tete-a-tete with Denzel down in the briny deep with the fate of the world hanging in the balance. It's 1995's Crimson Tide, directed by Tony Scott, featuring script punch-up from Quentin Tarantino, and starring Denzel Washington, Gene Hackman, Viggo Mortensen, James Gandolfini, George Dzundza, Matt Craven, Danny Nucci, Steve Zahn and Daniel von Bargen. A naval submarine thriller of the highest order, it's the first of five collaborations between Tony Scott and Denzel Washington, and while it's easily the high water mark of the bunch it's also plain to see why they would be eager to re-team time and time again to try to recapture this magic. The acting showdown at the heart of this movie's conflict is its greatest spectacle, and while the movie got shut out at the Oscars come awards season, it was nominated for Best Film Editing, Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing, losing all three. Womp womp. Plus: Hayley's been to the cinema and is back with a theatrical field report on the new Bong, Mickey 17! And J Mo is hooked on The Traitors. With swords, sorcery, and some of the most iconic moments in cinematic history on the table, the hosts dive deep into what makes these films so enduring. Anthony, the clear champion of Middle-earth in this discussion, passionately argues why The Lord of the Rings is a must-have in The Rewatch Party lineup. He breaks down the trilogy's breathtaking storytelling, unparalleled world-building, and legendary performances, especially from the likes of Ian McKellen and Viggo Mortensen. Manny, ever the wildcard, brings his own perspective, focusing on the sheer spectacle of the battles, the gripping character arcs, and, of course, his thoughts on the sheer length of the extended editions. Nick, while perhaps the most skeptical about including such a massive trilogy, gives credit where it's due. He acknowledges Peter Jackson's masterful direction and the trilogy's cultural impact, even if he finds himself questioning just how many walking sequences one movie can contain. The hosts debate whether the films hold up to repeated viewings, touching on their pacing, action, and emotional weight, all while weaving in their trademark banter and humor. By the end of the episode, the trio reaches a verdict on whether The Lord of the Rings truly belongs in the Rewatch Party collection. Whether you're a hardcore Tolkien fan or just someone who enjoys a good fantasy adventure, this episode delivers a fun, insightful, and sometimes ridiculous deep dive into one of the most beloved trilogies of all time. Will Nick be fully converted into a fan, or will Anthony's dream inclusion face unexpected challenges? Tune in to find out!   https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120737/

Following up starring in a string of big budget genre epics (Raiders of the Lost Ark, Blade Runner, Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi) in the early part of the '80's, Harrison Ford decided to detour just a bit with this smaller-scale suspense thriller directed by the legendary Peter Weir (Dead Poet's Society, The Truman Show).  Here he plays John Book, a Philadelphia police detective investigating a local murder where the ONLY witness is a young Amish boy (Lucas Haas) who happened to be travelling through the area with his mother at the time.  As it turns out, this murder investigation goes up the chain of the local police department and after an attempt is made on Book's life, he flees to the nearby Amish Country where the young boy lives with his mother Rachel (Kelly McGillis).  There as they help nurse John back to health, he not only becomes involved with the local Amish community but develops a forbidden romance with Rachel.  And what results is one of the best thrillers of the decade as it also was eventually nominated for eight Oscars including Best Picture, Best Director, and what has remained the ONLY Oscar nomination for Ford, Best Actor.   Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

Let's not forget the movie quotes Aragorn's inspiring battle cry, “The day may come when the courage of men fails… but it is not this day,” and his reverent words to the hobbits, “My friends, you bow to no one.” Éowyn's defiant triumph shines with “I am no man!”, while Sam's hopeful reminder, “There's some good in this world, Mr. Frodo, and it's worth fighting for,” resonates deeply. Gandalf offers wisdom with “I will not say, do not weep, for not all tears are an evil,” and celebrates victory with “A great shadow has departed.” Frodo's chilling, “The Ring is mine,” marks his moment of succumbing to temptation, while Aragorn's quiet resolve in “For Frodo,” before charging into battle, leaves a lasting impression.  Roxy & Tara REACT to the Best Scenes & Most EPIC Moments, including The Lighting of the Beacons, Sam vs. Shelob, Pippin Sings for Denethor, The Ride of the Rohirrim, Aragorn's Speech at the Black Gate, Éowyn vs. The Witch King, Frodo & Sam in Mount Doom, The Eagles Arrive, The Destruction of the Ring, Aragorn's Coronation, and Beyond!!
