Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for October 7, 2022 is: proffer • PRAH-fer • verb Proffer is a formal word meaning “to present (something) for acceptance.” // Several recommendations were proffered by the finance board on how to reduce the city's debt without making drastic cuts in department budgets. See the entry > Examples: “Already, critics and fans have proffered their share of theories as to the One True Meaning of ‘Crimes of the Future.' Some see it as an eco-fable about the damage humans have inflicted upon their environment. Others see a meditation on [filmmaker David] Cronenberg's identity as an aging artist, an interpretation reinforced by [actor Viggo] Mortensen's perhaps-ironic comment that the film is ‘autobiographical' for Cronenberg.” — Noah Gittell, The Ringer, 6 June 2022 Did you know? As rhyming synonyms, proffer and offer are quite the pair, and we can proffer an explanation as to why: both come ultimately from Latin offerre, meaning “to present, tender, proffer, offer.” Offer had been part of the language for hundreds of years before proffer was adopted by way of an Anglo-French intermediary in the 14th century. A more formal word than its plainer relation, proffer often emphasizes courteousness on the part of the one doing the tendering.

Crimes of the Future is a 2022 science fiction body horror drama film written and directed by David Cronenberg. The film stars Viggo Mortensen, Léa Seydoux, and Kristen Stewart. It follows a performance artist duo who perform surgery to audiences, in a future world where human evolution has accelerated for some individuals. Although the title shares with Cronenberg's 1970 film of the same name, it is not a remake as the story and concept are unrelated. The film marked Cronenberg's return to the science fiction and horror genres for the first time since eXistenZ (1999). An international co-production of Canadian, French, British and Greek companies. Crimes of the Future had its world premiere at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, where it was in competition for the Palme d'Or and received a six-minute standing ovation. The film received a theatrical release in France on May 25, 2022, opened in Canada on June 3, 2022, and had a same day limited release in the United States. Then we head on down to Bummertown, USA (pop. 2) with Viggo Mortensen's depressingly square butt cheeks and a whole lot of cannibalism in John Hillcoat's The Road (2009)

"G.I. Jane is a 1997 American war drama film directed by Ridley Scott and starring Demi Moore, Viggo Mortensen, and Anne Bancroft. The film tells the fictional story of the first woman to undergo special operations training similar to the U.S. Navy SEALs." Depending on who you ask, Demi Moore delivered either a great or not so great performance in 1997's "G.I. Jane", but was it only cuz she was "too attractive" to be convincing as a woman going through Navy Seal training? Was it fair to the rest of her troop that her nipples were poking through her garments for most of the film? Imagine (allegedly) being a lesbian in the forces still being a "problem" up until as recent as 1997?? IS THERE ANY TRUTH TO WOMEN BY DEFAULT PACKING 25% BODY FAT JUST BECAUSE OF THEIR GENDER??? Viggo Mortensen stars as a man who spontaneously grows new organs. Together with his partner, played by Léa Seydoux, he turns the tattooing, surgical removal and display of these organs into performance art.
