Even though The Blair Witch Project didn't invent the genre, it's probably the best-known and the biggest hit of all the found footage movies. The online marketing campaign was especially revolutionary. It's a shame that Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez never hit these heights again as writers or directors, but they got so much mileage out of their made-up story, considering it was mostly improvised by the then-unknown Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard and Michael Williams. The unresolved mystery takes a lot of heat for its ambiguity, yet Ryan's one-man show talks about how haunting the whole thing still feels 25 years later. This 621st edition of Have You Ever Seen also talks a lot about who or what might have caused these 3 to disappear. So face the wall on this penultimate day of both October and of Scary Movie Month as this episode tries to figure out the horrific deal in The Blair Witch Project. Additional note: both the fake documentary "The Curse Of The Blair Witch" and the 2016 "Blair Witch" have been rewatched since recording this podcast. The "doc" is indeed very effective and even quite eerie. This week we chat with Stuart Ortiz, the writer/director behind Grave Encounters 1 & 2 as well as Extraterrestrial. We chat with him about his latest movie Strange Harvest: Occult Murder in the Inland Empire, a mockumentary true crime film with cosmic horror overtones. Strange Harvest just premiered at Fantastic Fest 2024 and will be rolling out to other film festivals coming up. Mary Beth and Terry absolutely loved it and it was a joy to be able to chat with Stuart about his film, the world building, his relationship to horror and ultimately why Curse of the Blair Witch terrified him growing up. We chat about the Sci-Fi mockumentary's ability to terrify, Terry shares his story of watching it right before Blair Witch came out and Mary Beth shares her thoughts as a first time watcher. This is an update on the new developments surrounding one of my favorite movies of all time, The Blair Witch Project, paired with our 2019 minisode. When news broke that the film's production company Lionsgate will be reviving the franchise with genre giant Blumhouse, the three original actors took to social media with a serious bone to pick. The Blair Witch Project masqueraded as real found footage of three college students who went missing in the woods while recording a documentary on the local legend. The story of the missing students and the lore of the Blair Witch were both widely believed during its monumental release, and we are covering just how the directors and marketing team were able to pull off one of the greatest hoaxes in American history, creating an original urban legend and facilitating its spread while also using a truly unorthodox method of filming, essentially becoming the Blair Witch, that encouraged true fear out of the actors.
