Check out Cam's latest novel / audio drama here! We're kicking off our fifth annual Summerween celebration by taking a much closer look at one of Maggie's all time favorites: The Blair Witch Project. In this episode, we're starting with our impressions after seeing the film in theaters for a second time, analyzing the paradoxical urgency and breadth of the film's 81 minute runtime, and unpacking the mysteries of its suggestive, restrained creature design. We're also investigating some provocative comparisons with Backrooms, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Dante's Inferno that help to elucidate the lethal ambiguity of the film's final shot. In our final two segments, we're exploring the unique genre fusion of Blair Witch and reflecting on the subtle creative choices that provoked the strongest emotional reaction from us. This week on the podcast, the hosts dive into the unsettling horror release of the year, Backrooms. A film that has sparked huge conversation online for its atmosphere, psychological tension and its take on internet horror culture. The movie follows a group trapped inside a seemingly endless, liminal nightmare of fluorescent-lit hallways and shifting architectural design where reality slowly collapses around them. The hosts discuss the film's use of found footage, which is reminiscent of classic horror movies like Blair Witch and how it taps into the idea of liminal spaces. Which are spaces that aren't quite a room or a place but rather a transitional area that can be unsettling and eerie. They also talk about the film's cinematography, editing and score. Which all contribute to the sense of tension and unease. Ben and Brose praise the performances of the cast, particularly the two leads, who play characters that are both likeable and unlikable at the same time. They also discuss the film's themes of isolation, claustrophobia, and the blurring of reality and fantasy. If you're a fan of horror movies or just looking for a thought-provoking discussion, this episode is a must-listen. The hosts' analysis of the film's themes and techniques is insightful and entertaining and their passion for the subject matter is infectious. Join them as they dive into the world of Backrooms and explore what makes this film so compelling.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We like Sophie Thatcher and have enjoyed the works of Jennifer Kent. The idea of the two of them teaming up has us excited. Especially when it is set in a dystopian world. And it is based on a short story written for the pulp magazines of yesteryear. By a woman posing as a man. Good Boy was one of our favorite movies from last year. There is no arguing the hype surrounding it was based on its gimmick, however. Director Ben Leonberg's next movie is also very gimmicky. (No Indy, unfortunately.) We also talk about the next installment of the Blair Witch franchise and some of our concerns. Our first movie from South Africa may sound familiar. It is about a killer who preys on people's fears and wears black gloves with razor blades. But there is a reason that no one says Wes Craven stole the idea for A Nightmare on Elm Street. Quite simply, there is nothing like 1979's The Demon. This is probably for the best since the movie makes absolutely no sense. There is a soldier with ESP, a love story, an unresolved kidnapping, lots of quiet nudity, and no ending. Naturally, one of us was not impressed. So why did one of us give it the highest recommendation? Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. Morbidly Beautiful is your one stop shop for all your horror needs. One of the most successful independent films of all time, it is a "found footage" pseudo-documentary in which three young students (Heather Donahue, Michael C. One of the more interesting horror films to come along in recent years, largely because it relies on elaborate visuals and constant jump scares, the film builds its dread almost entirely through sound. What makes this movie stand out is how effectively it uses silence and sound design to create tension making it a bold choice and making it work remarkably well and it's the kind of horror that creeps up on you rather than announcing itself loudly and it's being called the new Blair Witch. Join me and Michele as we spoke about her role, what it was like on set with the rest of the cast and crew, and the dynamic she shared with Nina Kiri. The other topics explored were the religious background contrast with Evy's skepticism along with the demonic theme. Additionally, we also spoke about the themes of family guilt, deep faith and super-naturalism.

MORTUARY ASSISTANT Director | Jeremiah Kipp

Jeremiah Kipp is a New York–based horror filmmaker whose work includes The Sadist, Slapface, and The Geechee Witch: A Boo Hag Story. In this episode, Jeremiah breaks down his expansive career journey and finely tuned process for working with actors, maximizing low budgets, and keeping sets running smoothly. Jeremiah also discusses the importance of mentorship in his career, including his longstanding relationships with genre greats, and former guests of the show, Larry Fessenden and Jim Mickle. And of course, we dive deep into his most recent feature, the adaptation of the viral video game The Mortuary Assistant, coming to Shudder on March 27th. Without further ado, here is Mortuary Assistant Director, Jeremiah Kipp.KEY TAKEAWAYSChoose Material That Speaks to You PersonallyJeremiah initially had little interest in adapting a video game. But when he played The Mortuary Assistant, he connected deeply to the protagonist, Rebecca Owens, a woman who hides inside her work to avoid confronting her personal demons. That personal entry point became his entire pitch: preserve the game's dread and atmosphere while grounding the film in emotional vulnerability. He and game creator Brian Clark bonded over shared anxieties and experiences, and it became the start of an excellent collaboration because Jeremiah was able to relate to the material on a deeply personal level. When directing, it's critical to put a big part of yourself into your projects, otherwise, why should you be the one to direct it?If you can't channel personal experience into a movie, or if the producers don't leave room for that, it might not be the right fit for you, and that's fine. Find the emotional core that connects to your own life or unique sensibility. Otherwise, the movie becomes just a gig. Producers can tell when your heart isn't in it. Audiences can too. Make it personal, or don't do it.Make sure Everyone is Rowing in the Same DirectionThe Mortuary Assistant, a very creatively unified, cohesive production as opposed to an earlier project that Jeremiah passed on where the vision kept shifting. That earlier project had producers that first wanted Blair Witch-style dread, then Herschell Gordon Lewis gore, then something akin to Black Phone. This unfocused behavior is a MASSIVE red flag, and even if you're just starting out, you should run because you're probably being setup to fail. Of course, not everyone is going to agree and get your vision, but if producers don't know what they want, or you're getting massively conflicting feedback from those you're meant to report to, no one will win, and you as the director will get all the blame. As Budgets Increase, Money Feels SmallerJim Mickle warned Kipp: “As you move up the budget ladder, it feels like you have less money.” This is a fascinating paradox but really makes sense when you think about it. More money means more department heads, larger builds, higher actor costs, bigger expectations, more moving parts, and less margin for error. More money means better production value but often less time and less freedom. We all want bigger budgets but, heed this warning going in.De-escalation Is a Crucial Leadership SkillMovie-making is grueling and involves long nights, early mornings, physically punishing days, little sleep, and less-than-adequate nutrition from crafty — all within a high-pressure environment. In other words, it's a recipe for potential volatility among those involved. Things go wrong on sets, tensions run high, and having worked on as many movies as he has, Jeremiah learned that de-escalating situations is a critical skill.A lot of would-be directors expect to take on a domineering presence where they demand full obedience from everyone on set. This attitude will have your cast and crew turning on you by day one, and your movie will suffer for it. Instead, assume a posture of humility. Take your ego out of volatile situations to relieve tension — even when the people you're dealing with are the ones at fault. You gain nothing by arguing or by being “right,” especially if it comes at the expense of someone else. Your goal should never be to win or assert dominance, but to keep the movie on track by stabilizing those working around you. It's massively humbling but absolutely critical. This doesn't mean you tolerate blatant disrespect. But avoiding needless confrontation doesn't make you weak; it makes you smart because you're protecting the steadiness of your production. One bad attitude can poison a set quickly, so it's critical to protect morale at all costs and handle conflict privately and strategically. The real leadership flex is emotional regulation.Show NotesMovies MentionedThe Mortuary AssistantSlapfaceThe Geechee Witch: A Boo Hag StoryThe BabadookHereditaryThe WitchI Sell the DeadFried BarryHalloween (John Carpenter)Dawn of the Dead (George A. Gandbhir reveals that Owens was a personal friend of her family — her sister-in-law's best friend — and that the film was never initially planned as a documentary; she and her partner went to Florida to support the family and keep the story in the news, fearing Lorincz would walk free under Florida's stand your ground laws. The Sundance Directing Award winner explains how the production team obtained the bodycam footage through the family's attorneys, Benjamin Crump and Anthony Thomas, and describes the rare experience of having not just the aftermath but years of "before" footage — creating a slow-building tension she compares to Blair Witch and Paranormal Activity. Gandbhir emphasizes that the film doesn't preach; it simply presents the chronology and lets the audience decide. The conversation goes deeper into the systemic failures the footage revealed: Lorincz was the only person in the neighborhood who repeatedly called police, yet officers saw her as a nuisance rather than a threat — her whiteness, Gandbhir argues, shielding her from scrutiny. Police never checked whether Lorincz owned a gun, and in other states, her pattern of behavior would have resulted in harassment charges long before the shooting. Gandbhir explains why the case resulted in a manslaughter conviction rather than a more serious charge, advocates for the eradication of stand your ground laws that exist in 38 states, and makes a compelling case that some police funding would be better directed toward social workers and mental health professionals. She also reflects on what the film has meant to Owens' four children and their family, the power of bodycam footage as both a tool for truth and a potential instrument of surveillance, and what a potential Academy Award would mean — not for herself, but as a platform to drive real change. Chuck Todd argues that the United States is in an especially precarious moment of Trump's presidency — but that the guardrails of American democracy are proving they still exist. Todd breaks down the ruling's implications, noting that without tariff revenue the already ballooning U.S. budget deficit will accelerate, and that the coming chaos over refunds for billions in illegally collected duties will be a mess for businesses, consumers, and the trade deals that were negotiated under a now-invalidated framework. He highlights the emerging three distinct wings of the Supreme Court — with Gorsuch writing a pointed concurrence calling out his colleagues, Kavanaugh dissenting on foreign policy grounds, and the liberal justices joining Roberts on textual grounds — and argues the ruling reflects the public's own disapproval of Trump, which a new poll now places at 60% disapproval. He reserves his sharpest commentary for Trump's reaction: rather than pivot, the president attacked his own Supreme Court appointees for disloyalty and accused the Court of "foreign influence," a response Chuck calls a gift to Democrats and a sign that Trump is terrified dissent will become contagious among Republicans. Chuck also cautions that Democrats shouldn't celebrate too much — their brand remains damaged despite Trump's cratering numbers — and offers a counterintuitive observation: that Trump's greatest weakness isn't his authoritarian instincts but his laziness, arguing that his reliance on emergency powers is a shortcut to avoid the hard work of legislating. Then, Emmy Award-winning director and Academy Award nominee Geeta Gandbhir joins the Chuck Toddcast to discuss her critically acclaimed Netflix documentary The Perfect Neighbor, which uses years of police bodycam footage to reconstruct the events leading to the 2023 fatal shooting of Ajike Owens by her neighbor Susan Lorincz in Ocala, Florida. Finally, Chuck hops into the ToddCast Time Machine to revisit the Reichstag fire & how Hitler was able to turn Germany’s democracy into a dictatorship through the use of emergency powers he was granted. He also answers listeners’ questions in the “Ask Chuck” segment. The folklore, the symbols, the creatures, the journal entries… everything feels like it's pointing to something older, sadder, and more human than a typical horror story. And when you reach the researcher's notes at the end, the whole narrative reframes itself in a way that's genuinely tragic, shocking, and leads you into a rabbit-hole of wonder. Kevin kicks things off with a review of One Battle After Another, a character-driven drama with sharp performances and a slow-burn emotional core. Andrew throws in director deep cuts, trivia, and a few wild personal stories to round out the discussion. We shift gears into true-crime meets Hollywood with a breakdown of Allison Mack's vulnerable, complicated interview on Michael Rosenbaum's podcast. The group looks at her time in the Nxivm cult, her prison experience, the contradictions in her public story, and the surprising relationship she formed after her release. Lauren brings the energy back up with her trip to see the Broadway musical Two Strangers Carry a Cake Across New York—a quirky, heartfelt rom-com on stage that sparks a full-scale debate on why musical adaptations either soar (Wicked, Hamilton) or crash spectacularly (Cats, West Side Story). Kevin then reviews the indie horror film Shelby Oaks, breaking down what works (atmosphere) and what really doesn't (genre chaos, FX overload). The crew compares it to classics like Blair Witch and Paranormal Activity while debating whether it's worth a rental or a “wait until streaming” kind of watch. We wrap with a deep dive into HBO's IT: Welcome to Derry, exploring its historical layers, lore, Pennywise reveals, character arcs, and how it all ties back to Stephen King's universe. Synopsis This film follows Jane, a lonely librarian who finds a note at her desk with her name on it and a $50 bill, instructing her to play the game. She is helped by Brace, a new friend, in solving the puzzles and getting double the money every time she finds a new envelope. Jane and Brace quickly find out that she is playing a very dangerous game. Her strength, fortitude, and sanity are strained as she finds out just how far she'll go for the cash, and the thrill. Review I found this movie because of some tweet that had a few hundred likes saying it was some sort of hidden gem. I looked it up and could not find much about it, save a couple articles and Letterboxd reviews. I found a rip of it on Youtube through a Reddit post and told the guys, hey this is the movie we're gonna do this week. It was shot on video, never had a wide release or any sort of release at all. It was made by writer-director Clifton Holmes, along with his brother Dwayne producing, and co-written by Richard Laymon, the author of the book this film is based on. From an article on steemit.com, user modernzorker states that the film is incomplete, not in editing or shooting but in ADR and sound mixing, apparently all the sound we hear was the live recordings of each scene.  With all that said, I loved this film. I love finding horror that is so underground that even though this movie was posted for free on Youtube eight years ago, it only has 12k views. It has 1.6k watches on Letterboxd. It basically doesn't exist. While you're watching it, you feel like it shouldn't exist. I don't say that to mean it is a so-called ‘cursed' film, like the movie Antrum claims to be. I mean that it probably shouldn't exist, and it almost doesn't. The only way to watch it is in 240p on Youtube or buy a DVD rip of it from some dude on eBay claiming he's the only one who sells them (and yes, listener, I did buy it for nine Great British pounds). It basically isn't real.  It's hard to watch in 240p, I was begging for at least 480 but you get what you get when you wanna watch something like this. The low quality adds to the uneasiness and uncertainty of the film's vibe, but at some points it just sucks not being able to discern what is happening, mostly when they are shooting at night. All the lore aside, this film is excellent. It reminds me of Blair Witch and Clerks in the way it is shot. With a limited budget, we only see the aftermath of gore instead of the action happening, which I think works in its favor. You feel the dread alongside Jane, but she also is a very unflinching, dedicated protagonist. She is brave, and you know that she is from the start. There's almost no music in this movie, save for a few moments of characters listening to music, and every time we see our antagonist a crescendo of guitars rises to the front. The only other time we hear sound other than voices is when Jane is playing Silent Hill on her PlayStation, we hear the footsteps of Harry Mason running through the endless fog. This film is creepy, wacky, captivating, and so much more fun knowing that you're probably one of the only people in your generation to ever have watched this. It was such a treat and tonally great for spooky season. It's slow at first, but as the tension builds it just goes off the rails in the best possible ways. It's a crazy movie. Look up (aka click here) Richard Laymon's In The Dark on Youtube to watch it, you will not regret it. Score 10/10 Website: http://horrormovietalk.com Linktree: https://linktr.ee/horrormovietalk

On Day 9 of our 31 Days of Halloween, I'm flying solo again with Adam Wingard's Blair Witch (2016). I know it's considered blasphemous in the horror community, but honestly—I kind of like this one. There's something strangely satisfying about finally seeing something in the woods, and seeing it in full color. While it doesn't capture the raw, groundbreaking energy of the 1999 original, it expands the mythos with new technology, eerie set pieces, and a fresh sense of dread that kept me hooked.Support The Conner & Smith Show on Patreon here:https://www.patreon.com/ConnerandSmith?utm_campaign=creatorshare_fan

What is up Bros?! RHOSCL HATH RETURNED and not a day too soon. This episode kicks off with and RV trip for the ladies. Noticeably missing is Lisa Barlow as she has an "important business thing" but the real tea is that she wont sleep in an RV with Bronwyn. Bold move to miss the premiere and it seems to have hit the group in a bad way. Heather gives us the low down on where everyone stands. Brittany cant help herself and makes not one but TWO Jared Osmond announcements. It seems that the group is split on reactions regarding Lisa. Britany apparently is now BFF's with Lisa and immediately jumps to her defense. Whitney Angie and Mary all have questions about Lisa's behavior and the double standard when it comes to LB. Meredith want's to wait until Lisa can defend herself and we end up learning about 5 lawsuits surrounding both Lisa and Vida Tequila. While Lisa was absent from the premiere, these ladies have returned to form immediately with some Blair Witch camera work and some A grade shade being thrown. Buckle up Bros, we are so back. We mention our friend Tim Pool and dive into the setup for the Wheel of Doom, which is loaded with 60 videos today—potentially a record! We're aiming to beat our all-time high score of 9,300 points. Social Media and Livestream Prep: Discussing the platforms we're streaming on and the excitement of going live. Tim Pool and Comedy Connections: Mentioning a conversation with Tim Pool about Stephen Colbert and how Sam stepped in when Dave Smith wasn't available. Wheel of Doom Setup: Hyping up the wheel with 60 videos and our goal to hit a high score. 0:15:00 - 0:30:00 - The Blair Witch Project: A Psychological Experiment? The first spin lands on a video about The Blair Witch Project, revealing its production as a real-life psychological experiment. We dive into how the filmmakers pushed actors to their limits with minimal scripting, GPS coordinates, and intentional deprivation to capture genuine fear. This sparks a discussion about the ethics of such filmmaking and its impact on the found footage genre. Blair Witch's Unconventional Filming: Actors were left in the woods, sleep-deprived, and scared by directors to elicit real reactions. Ethical Debate: Was this genius or borderline torture? We ponder if we'd sign up for such a project. Cultural Impact: The film's viral marketing and low-budget success (made for $60,000, grossed $250 million) redefined horror. 0:30:00 - 0:45:00 - Flat Earth Theories and the Amazon River The wheel spins to a video claiming the Amazon River's flow challenges the globe Earth model, suggesting a flat plane of existence. We react with a mix of intrigue and skepticism, noting the video's disclaimer that it's for “entertainment purposes only.” This leads to a broader discussion about conspiracy theories and their presentation online. Amazon River and Flat Earth: The video argues the river's unidirectional flow defies a globe's curvature, implying a flat Earth. Skepticism and Cop-Outs: We criticize the “entertainment only” disclaimer as a way to dodge accountability. Conspiracy Culture: Reflecting on how platforms like TikTok shape the spread of such theories. 0:45:00 - 1:00:00 - The Matrix and Brain Symbolism Another spin brings us to a video linking The Matrix to brain science, suggesting Neo's journey represents moving from the reptilian brain to the neocortex. We explore this metaphor for consciousness and control, touching on Freemasonry and the film's deeper meanings. We also briefly discuss movie recommendations for Alistair Crowley, favoring Fantastic Four over the new Superman. Matrix Symbolism: Neo's plug-in at the neck symbolizes the reptilian brain, while his awakening reflects the neocortex and higher consciousness. Freemasonry Connection: The video ties brain regions to Masonic degrees, sparking curiosity about hidden meanings. Movie Talk: We debate Superman's slapstick tone versus Fantastic Four's stronger reception. 1:00:00 - 1:15:00 - Sam's Corner: Funny and Emotional Clips In Sam's Corner, we share handpicked videos, starting with a hilarious clip of a kid caught with a hooker, claiming he's going to marry her to dodge trouble. We then get emotional watching a tribute to Hulk Hogan, reflecting on his legacy despite past controversies, including a fake voiceover clip of him making offensive remarks. Hooker Mishap: A kid's desperate excuse that he's marrying a hooker cracks us up. Hulk Hogan Tribute: A heartfelt video from The Rock about Hogan's wrestling legacy, contrasted with a fake clip highlighting his controversial past. Nostalgia and Wrestling: We reminisce about our love for pro wrestling and Hogan's iconic moves. 1:15:00 - 1:34:52 - Conspiracy Deep Dive and Bizarre News The final segment is a whirlwind of conspiracy and oddities. We discuss a video linking Sabrina Carpenter to occult symbolism in Rosemary's Baby and Eyes Wide Shut, a creepy ad for glowing smart implants, and a disturbing story about a serial butt sniffer arrested in California. We wrap up with plugs for our projects and a nod to the Doomers. Sabrina Carpenter Conspiracy: Connections to Lucifer quotes, Rosemary's Baby fonts, and Eyes Wide Shut suggest Hollywood occult ties. Smart Implants: A futuristic ad for glowing implants raises cyborg concerns, with a humorous take on glowing body parts. Serial Butt Sniffer: A repeat offender's arrests at Walmart and Nordstrom spark a mix of humor and unease about bizarre crimes.
