If a very handsome and friendly young veteran named David visited your home one afternoon with a warm smile and some very kind words about your son whom he served with overseas....wouldn't YOU invite him over to stay?  That's the main question which kicks off this lean, mean horror thriller directed by aspiring genre master Adam Wingard (You're Next, Godzilla Vs Kong) and starring Dan Stevens (Downton Abbey, Cuckoo) AS David, the titular guest.  It was released ten years ago to much acclaim and minimal box office but has become something of a cult phenomenon via cable, streaming, and physical media since then.  Also co-starring is modern Scream Queen herself, Maika Monroe (It Follows, Longlegs) as Anna the older teenage daughter of the Peterson family which David stays with.  The rest of the family are played by Leland Orser, Sheila Kelly, and Brendan Meyer....and they all start to really like having David around including Anna.  But eventually she starts to suspect that all is NOT as it seems with regards to David....he might be hiding some secrets, some potentially VIOLENT secrets. :o And what results is an unforgettable ride sprinkled with throwback vibes to genre classics from the '70's and '80's including a catchy synth soundtrack!Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

There's a serial killer around New York city going around murdering people in increasingly bizarre ways while also leaving increasingly minute details behind as clues.  Denzel Washington plays the brilliant criminologist Lincoln Rhymes who has been paralyzed from the neck down but can still solve clues while bedridden and Angelina Jolie plays Amelia, a plucky young beat cop-former model with a natural eye for forensics and...yada yada yada...they team up to catch the killer.  Directed by Phillip Noyce (Dead Calm, Clear and Present Danger, Sliver), this would end up be the last of SEVERAL thrillers released throughout the 1990's focusing on the hunt for a serial killer.  And while it might not hold up to the best (The Silence of the Lambs, Se7en) within this subgenre, it IS somewhat elevated by a stacked cast lead by Denzel and Angelina, also including Ed O'Neil, Queen Latifah, Michael Rooker, Luis Guzman, and Leland Orser.Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

What Were They Thinking?

In the second part of our Liam Neeson spectacular, the guys shift their attention to Taken 3 (or Tak3n if you were a part of the stupid marketing team). It's a movie that asks the question... what if we just didn't take anyone? You can blame Liam Neeson for that and his weird-ass contract. But in regards to the movie, they also wonder what is up with Forest Whitaker's hands business? How stupid is Bryan Mills in his everyday life? Should you ever tamper with bagel evidence? In the series we see Julian Kaye (played by Jon Bernthal) being exonerated for a murder he spent fifteen years in prison for. Julian was a male prostitute, or gigolo, from the age of 15 when his mother sent him off to get out of his unfavorable home situation. Once freed, he tries to adjust to life outside and uncover the circumstances of his framing. He takes up somewhat of a reluctant partnership with Det. Joan Sunday (played by Rosie O'Donnell), the detective who put him away. During this process of returning back to a normal life, he hopes to reconnect with his lover Michelle (Gretchen Mol). Michelle's son Colin (played by Gabriel Labelle) is on the lamb after falling in love with his teacher and escaping with her to create a new life. Colin's lover, Elizabeth, is accidentally killed by Richard Stratton's (Leland Orser) lawyer/right hand man, Panish. Detective Sunday hunts for clues to solve both murders and Julian, Michelle, and Richard search for Colin (who we find out is Julian's biological son). Colin is taken for ransom by a man called McGregor who worked for Olga (Julian's former boss) and who now works for Richard. Isabelle (played by Lizzie Brocheré), Olga's successor, contacts McGregor and brings Colin back to Julian and Michelle. In the end of the series, we see Julian and Michelle planning to start back up where they left of, creating a life together, only for Michelle to pull the plug when she sees Colin and Richard start to repair their shattered relationship.

Awesome. Then making him profess his love.-How 90's to record them waving goodbye.-Pretty formulaic, wedding, bachelor party antics... drinking, smoking, not sure about the drugs though.-That stripper is pretty hot... But I don't get Kyle saying "I can't do this"... Its not implied that he would fuck the stripper, just get a dance. Nothing wrong with that.-That's a way to kill someone-I don't like it when Christian Slater makes a good point about concealing an accidental murder.-That security guy could've made it so much easier on himself... Poor guy. Why would you stab him with a cork screw?-The movie is billed a black comedy, but it's not funny. The situation is mildy humorous, but its mostly just dark.-Can you imagine drinking that much, doing that many drugs, then having to just stop and start cleaning everything up? (Triple Lindy)-The burial and body re-arrangement was... Interesting. I'd like to think we'd be more functional than those guys.-That whole overreaction at the gas station about Whizzers and his paranoia is weird.-Who would break like Adam did at the rehearsal dinner?-Wow... Michael killing Adam.-How many troop rallying speeches does Boyd have in him? This one he has to accentuate with a kiss, though. I think I would punch someone-Michael mounting Adams wife at the funeral is a weird tonal shift, and the whole overreaction during the funeral. It hard waffles from SUPER dark "comedy" to this almost slapstick, over the top, trying to be funny.-Blaming Adam for sleeping with a prostitute is interesting... Could work.-Boyd attacking Lois is unwarranted, but I love her self defense and biting his dick.-Boyd then killing Michael, framing him for Lois' murder is DARK.-Laura being morally superior to Kyle, calling his friends 'jackasses' and only caring about the wedding is just so disconnected. She doesn't care anyone was killed, just that her wedding will happen? Strange. We are jackasses messing around, none of us are murderers... That's a bit more than a jackass.-Boyd attacking Fish for insurance money; then Laura killing him telling him to get to the wedding... Wow.-Of course Moore accidentally kills Boyd... Should've been Fish somehow though.-Jesus... Laura is cold as fuck... Just kill Moore and the dog, too?-Why did they dig up the other bodies?-It's darkly funny they crash thinking about the other guys.-You can see Jon Favreaus feet under the wheelchair-Those kids are little assholes-Laura is just a shitty person, having her break down.   Top Five Trivia of the movie: Top 5 Trivia 1) Adam Sandler was originally cast as Michael Berkow but dropped out at the last minute to make The Waterboy (1998). Jeremy Piven took the role.2) The word " fuck " is said 124 times through the movie.3) Alan Dershowitz, the then-respected Harvard Law School professor, had a column for a few years in the late 1990's with PREMIERE magazine in which he analyzed possible legal issues arising from new movies. In this film's case, Dershowitz said that a strong case could be made that the prostitute's death was an accident or involuntary manslaughter, though the huge amount of drugs in the suite would complicate that (and would leave the guys open to major prison time via the DEA). However, he said that all of the men would be charged with first-degree murder anyway because of the deliberate stabbing death of the hotel security guard.4) While the guys are trying to get rid of the dead body, Christian Slater's character is asked incredulously "Have you ever done this before?" The same thing was asked of him in Heathers (1988) when he is trying to cover up an accidental suicide that he manipulated. In both films, he hears the question, then pointedly does not answer it.5) The weekend of the night in Vegas can be worked out due to the guys watching UFC 10 on pay-per-view: July 12, 1996. The background shows Don Frye vs. Brian Johnston.  **TRIPLE LINDY AWARD** **REVIEW AND RATING** TOP 5Stephen:1 Breakfast club2 T23 Sandlot4 Back to the Future5 Mail order brides Chris:1. sandlots2. The story of the lonely hologram, stranded on a ship by himself, is one of the best Voyager episodes, with Torres and The Doctor forming an away team to help repair both the ship and the holographic matrix. But something is wrong, which leads to a tense and fascinating story. Guest star Leland Orser is one of the best in the Voyager series, with a creepy performance as the “isomorph” Dejaren, who resists The Doctor’s optimistic attitude towards humans. This episode is also known for Seven of Nine’s matter-of-fact rebuff of Harry Kim’s attempts to woo her as they begin work on the new astrometrics lab, and if you are a fan of Tom + B’Elanna, there’s a key moment in their newly-acknowledged attraction for each other. Leland Orser and Joe Pantoliano might be the best things about Daredevil (2003) where nothing really works and Ben Affleck vows never to play another superhero. (SPOILER: He does). "In the end there is a 50% chance you will have your daughter back." It's the last Trailer Rewind of 2017, and this time it's personal. When they decided to watch Andy's trailer pick from our Syriana episode on February 20, 2015, Steve and JJ had no idea of the impact it would have on them. Writer/director Riley Stearns has crafted a dark tale exploring loss, free will, and the decisions people make that give others power over them. This film checks all the boxes of a small independent film: character-driven story, few locations, and an important message to share. Faults is one of those rare exceptions that has found the perfect cast. Leland Orser is one of “those guys”, a familiar face often in a small supporting role. However, here he is one of the leads carrying this film. It is his portrayal of Ansel Roth, a burned out, down on his luck, and weary cult expert that holds this film together. He is joined by Mary Elizabeth Winstead, as Claire, the subject of his deprogramming efforts. It's challenging to find an accurate adjective to describe the journey that we take with Ansel and Claire. At times Steve found some humor in it, while JJ found himself filled with anxiety. What they both agree on is that this is a film worth watching and discussing. After almost a month Stevil and Matty return with a new Convicted Cinephiles. This week we explore that fun time in everyone's development as a human being, teen angst! With the help of guests Jstebz and our friend, a guest from our comic show Booked, Noah Dorsey, the panel breaks down four very different films. With stories ranging from Saturday detention to the outright murder of the popular clique in school, we have all bases covered. So alright, alright, alright, let's dig in! These are our Staff Picks of the week! Noah comes equipped with two picks for us this week. Proving it gets better and better with each viewing, it's really a no brainer why Big Hero 6 was the Academy Award winner for Best Animated. It's got a big heart, lovable characters and some really great action. Will this be the kick in the pants Matty needs to see it? Time will tell. For Noah's second pick he suggests a horror film from writer/director Eric England, Contracted, about a woman who thinks she's caught an STI but in actuality is some much worse. Noah features in the sequel, which will be released later this year. Matty's pick this week digs into one of his favorite genres, westerns, and features one of his favorite actors, Mads Mikkelsen, in The Salvation, a brutal tale of vengeance. A story that takes place in America, directed by a Danish director and filmed in South Africa, this is definitely an international collaboration that moves like a living painting. One of the best films of 2015 so far. When Stevil's away Jstebz will play...... with Netflix. Making the informed decision to watch Blackfish, Jen quickly put herself in a weeping, humanity hating stupor by watching this heartbreaking documentary about killer whales in captivity. How did she combat the tears and horrible feelings that washes over her from this eye opening film? By heading to the Valley with Alicia Silverstone and a young and handsome Paul Rudd in Amy Heckerling's Clueless. It has to be stated how Heckerling had a finger on the pulse of high school comedy in two separate decades, the 80s and 90s. Stevil's pick was a really surprise hit for him. From writer/director Riley Stearns and starring his wife, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and Leland Orser, Faults is a movie that will leave your brain twisted. Following a disgraced cult deprogrammer who is hired by a couple who wants him to save their daughter from a cult called Faults. When he starts to try to get in her head and make sense of everything she starts to push back into his psyche. A very cool movie with an incredible twist.   For the main subject of teen angst films, our panel explains why they made their choices: "I chose Heathers because, like me, it tries to be witty, dark, and funny at the same time. But, unlike me, the movie succeeds on all levels. Christian Slater and Winona Ryder are at the top of their game, the dialogue is smart, catchy, and repeatable, and the movie itself holds up as one of the best teenage angst movie ever to exist." - @noahalexanderd "Dazed and Confused is definitely in my top ten, and that's saying something because I hate lists. It's not the angstiest movie of the bunch but it did reminded me the most of my childhood. Getting stoned, drinking, finding something to do and listening to damn good music will doing it." - @mattydub604 "I chose Thirteen because it was a movie that hit close to home for me. The time in which the story unfolds is around my highschool days and I watched as all of my friends and I adapted to what we thought we were supposed to be. Some of my friends ended up like Evie and Tracy. I related to this movie because I had seen it all happen before. Watching it now as a parent changed the viewing experience, but it still hits me so hard. Now, understanding Holly Hunter's point of view a little more, it just makes the movie all the more difficult to watch. Although some people feel like it's an exaggeration of the transformation from girl to woman, I feel like Thirteen is very spot on and truthful." - @jstebz_ "The quintessential high school movie and arguably the best movie of the 80s, The Breakfast Club is the crown jewel of John Hughes' fantastic career. A movie following a brain, an athlete, a basket case, a princess and a criminal, this film feels completely timeless as we are always ready and willing to spend a Saturday detention with each of these characters, completely angsty in their own individual ways. Plus, John Bender (and for that matter, Judd Nelson) is one of the most likable anti-hero characters ever. And don't get me started on that Simple Minds track. *Fist Pump*" - @thestevildead   What is your favourite teen angst film? Do you or did you enjoy our picks?
