Today Ellen shares the birth stories of her two daughters, who were both born prematurely. We discuss the benefits of midwifery care and why Ellen chose midwives for both of her births, as well as some of the insurance challenges that we face when attempting to choose midwives. She details how both of her daughters were not only preemies but also how her bag of waters broke as the first sign of labor both times. You'll hear Ellen describe a difficult 2nd pregnancy and how seeing a chiropractor who was expert in this phase of life helped eliminate all of the severe pain she had experienced. She also shares coping strategies for her second (induced) birth that really helped her cope in a way that enabled her to opt out of the epidural. She discusses the various ways that her midwives advocated for her in both births to avoid a cesarean in the first birth and to push the way she wanted to her in her second. Ellen tells how her husband, Lo, almost missed the 2nd birth when he ran out briefly to grab food. She also shares details on having both babies in the NICU for jaundice and ways she advocated for her daughters, along with the nuances of being a pediatric nurse as a new parent and how that dynamic played into the advocacy. Ellen describes specific ways she coped with the challenges of labor and how her training as a prenatal yoga teacher and meditation habits as a couple informed her strategies. Finally, she shares about early breastfeeding challenges and both of her daughters’ diagnoses with and treatment for tongue tie.
China, like the Ukraine, is known for bringing out incredible handbalancers and circus acrobats, some of them very young. Ellen Grow, who I met at the Bali Handstand Retreat spent 18 months training there at the Beijing International Art School. So I asked her if she would be willing to share her experience. Even though she was there about ten years ago, I thought it was worth sharing with you guys. Today Ellen performs with her group One Fell Swoop Circus. Actually they are currently doing shows at the fringe festival! So go watch them if you have a chance! This week’s Poker Divas show about what to do when you are getting bad cards or what happens you do everything right and still lose. Poker is a game of 70% skill and 30% luck so over time the best rise to the top. But as good as you may be sometimes you just can’t get the cards. How you manage that takes thought and very often leads to a big opportunity. We will talk with Carol Perleman the founder of Perlman Communications a Crisis Communications, Management company which specializes in preparing companies to navigate situations that could have serious impact on their image, reputation, productivity and market value. We’ll talk about: • How to get over bad beats and move on • How to manage your emotions after a loss • How to be deliberate in planning (and how to develop a Plan B) • Turning a loss into an opportunity • The 3 phases of crisis management • How mentors help when the cards are not in your favor. Tune in to learn more! Segment 1 Ellen welcomes her listeners. The Poker Diva show isn’t about playing poker, but it’s the strategies that can help you in your life. It’s about to dealing with bullies, getting over people, learning about people, etc. It’s not only for women, but for men. The gender dynamics is very important, especially in today’s world. Today Ellen discusses dealing with a bad hand of cards, and what happens when you do everything right, but still lose. Ellen introduces Carol Perleman the founder of Perlman Communications a Crisis Communications, Management company. Ellen and Carol talks about how to manage different kind of crisis in your life. Segment 2 Ellen and Carol continue to discuss moving on from “playing a bad hand”. Carol shares how she had to change the game when she got a few thumbs-down for a marketing project she was working on. Carol discusses how she fought for promotions with her male co-workers, whereas women were called aggressive while men are called assertive even though they express the same behavior. Carol also mentioned she had “lost the game”, but in the end she “won”. Segment 3 Ellen gives a brief summary of what she and Carol discuss before. Carol talks about how the company she previously worked for did not provide maternity leave when she was pregnant. She had to come back to work in 10 days after she delivered her son. She also talks about how she felt when she was passed over for promotions because she had given birth to her son. Carol gives insights about the importance of knowing your own value. If you don’t know your own value, you are not appreciated where you are, go somewhere where you are appreciated for your value. Segment 4 Ellen talks about how she had met Carol and how Carol gave some really good advice. Carol gave her thoughts about mentorship and how important it is.Mentors can help when the “cards” that are not in your favor. Ellen points out that there are many discussions about the same-gender mentors and different-gender mentors. Carol discusses how she always sets an example to everyone and how she mentors both genders. People underestimate the power of a mentor, especially in a time where either need to fold the bad cards or throw them away altogether.
Sometimes it can feel as if you are completely alone in your healthstyle struggles. While some problems are fairly commonplace (e.g. How can I fit a workout into my busy workday?), others can feel so uniquely your own that it feels nearly impossible to come up with a solution. In today’s episode I help Ellen tackle a very specific problem, demonstrating the systematic approach I use to breakdown a complex issue and find an answer. On the surface Ellen’s healthstyle is dialed in, and she juggles her family and career in tech like a champ. Unfortunately, several factors have conspired to make it so that she has an objectively unfair cooking arrangement with her husband. Because of it she often feels resentment during dinnertime, which triggers overeating and is ruining a part of her life she deserves to enjoy. Ellen has already tried several strategies to resolve this on her own, but a fix has remained elusive. Today Ellen and I explore her remaining options–a method that involves clarifying the different aspects of the issue that she can and can’t control–and come up with a strategy for her to use moving forward. Ellen’s issue is an example of a problem that is very unique to her situation, but the systematic approach we use to land on a realistic solution can be applied broadly. Ellen is a remarkable young woman who spotted a problem in her home country, Malawi; women have fewer opportunities for education which limits their employment opportunities and keeps them homebound for most of their adult lives. Inspired by one of Mohammed Yunus's books, and the example her mother had set as an evolving entrepreneur, Ellen knew she wanted to help Malawian women to start their own businesses. After attending the Global Changemakers Global Youth Summit at just 18 years old, Ellen raised enough money to start Tiwale. Tiwale began as a microloan program and has grown into a center for entrepreneurship for women in Malawi. Today Ellen is finishing her senior year at Mount Holyoke College while managing Tiwale from afar and setting up her team for long term sustainability. Download this week's podcast to hear Ellen's remarkable story and what happened when she presented famous musician, Bono, with an award that he gave right back to her.
